“The Taliban are coming”, sings this young boy from a Deobandi madrassa

The Taliban are Coming , Sings this young boy from a Deobandi Madrassa in Punjab – by Riaz Malik Hajjaji

Between the Army and the Pro Taliban politicians (Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan) to the media (mostly everyone), Judiciary (nearly every one especially Rana Iftikhar Chaudhary PCO), this post about an Deobandi gathering literally welcoming the Taliban should not come as a surprise. Flags of Deobandi organisations like ASWJ-LeJ and JUI are being waved in this gathering.

There are no Hindus at this Taliban love fest, no Jews, No Christians, No Sunni (Barelvis), No Shias. No Sufis, No Sikhs. Just Deobandis rocking to the beat of a brainwashed child singing the Taliban anthem.

This post was published in Febuary 2014 – nearly a year before the devastating massacre of over 130 school children in Peshawar.
For highlighting these facts, LUBP was labelled a “sectarian hate blog”.

At that time, some of Pakistan’s “Liberals” were deeply enamoured (probably still are) with a powerful Deobandi cleric with ties to the ISIS affiliated ASWJ-LeJ whose flags are dominantly being waved in this rally.

The establishment in Pakistan has fully supported the Deobandi lobby for the ruinous “Strategic Depth” policy and the Deobandi madrassa network has clearly allowed itself to be used for a policy that has engulfed the region in darkness.

Whenever this connection was highlighted and whenever LUBP was critical of those who provided ASWJ-LeJ and their apologists with media space – we were labelled an “Ahmadi-Sunni Barelvi-Shia” conspiracy acting on the interests of India, Iran and Israel. Sadly, some of Pakistan’s “liberals” were no different. When we critiqued them for their dishonest binaries of lumping the victims of Deobandi terrorism with the perpetrators in the same category, we were accused for the bizarre and nonsensical crime of running a “hate campaign” against such “liberals”.

Similarly when LUBP was critical of the same liberals congregated under the (in)famous Jinnah Institute which subtly regurgitated the same Good Taliban vs Bad Taliban nonsense, we were again accused of running a “slander” campaign against the liberal Infallibles.

Our criticism of the Army, Judiciary, media and every political party on their failure to tackle the menace of extremism and its dominance by an increasingly radicalized Deobandi clergy did not win us any friends- which was never our purpose in the first place.

Hopefully, the Peshawar tragedy has awakened everyone to this threat. Hopefully, now they will be able to distinguish between Tahir ul Qadri who was one of the first clerics to come out openly against the Taliban vs another cleric whose dubious role was in negotiating with the former COAS Gen. Kayani to free ISIS Malik Ishaq.

LUBP has also been threatened for being critical of key establishment figures such as the Pro-Taliban judiciary and its current paymaster, the so-called “anti-establishment” Nawaz Sharif.

On the key issue of supporting Takfeeri Kharjis for gaining “Stratagic Depth” in India and Afghanistan, Nawaz Sharif, the Judiciary, Imran Khan and most of the media have been on board with the establishment.

In what clearly amounts to a cruel joke just two days after the Peshawar massacre of school children, Pakistan’s corrupt, compromised and spineless Judiciary freed the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai terrorist attacks. Many of Pakistan’s “liberals” blindly supported this judiciary even as it freed other terrorists masterminds like Malik Ishaq, Maulvi Abdul Aziz and Hafiz Saeed.

At LUBP, we have striven to counter the selective narrative of Pakistan’s (pseudo) Liberal “iintelligentsia where some Generals like Kayani are kosher because they restricted themselves to soft coups vs other Generals who launched open coups like Musharaf. Even Najam Sethi acknowledged our role in calling out Imran Khan’s Taliban apologist attitude but unlike some liberals, we did not spare Nawaz Sharif and his cronies on this issue.

On the issue of condemning Taliban mouthpieces, we did not distinguish between journalists and did not engage in sycophancy for long term Taliban apologists like Hamid Mir.

We always appreciated the Unequivocal stance of Maulana Tahir ul Qadri against the Taliban and their indiscriminate savagery against innocent civilians – just as we opposed those grinning fraudsters who stood with ISIS-ASWJ Malik Ishaq, engaged in hate speech against Ahmadis, Sunni Barelvis and Shias and were still promoted as “progressives” by some Pakistani liberals!

It is very easy to slam Sunni Barelvi, Shia and Ahmadis in Pakistan who are NOT part of the militant Strategic Death project. Just as it is not so easy to expose the bigotry of the powerful Deobandi lobby supported by the establishment. And some of Pakistan’s “Liberals” clearly took the easy way out on this crucial issue.
After the current massacre, we hope and pray that there is a greater realization of these issues. Otherwise, we are doomed for worse.
