Machiavellian stalemate in Syria and more death: the best strategic option for the West and Israel

syriaEditor’s Note: we are cross posting an article by The NewYork Times which validates positions taken by LUBP writers several months ago, indeed it benefits Isreal and the West for the civil war in Syria to never end. So if Asad is winning he will be degraded and if the rebels are winning they will be degraded.

JERUSALEM — President Obama’s position on Syria — punish President Bashar al-Assad for using chemical weapons without seeking to force him from power — has been called “half-pregnant” by critics at home and abroad who prefer a more decisive American intervention to end Syria’s civil war.

But Mr. Obama’s limited strike proposal has one crucial foreign ally: Israel.

Israeli officials have consistently made the case that enforcing Mr. Obama’s narrow “red line” on Syria is essential to halting the nuclear ambitions of Israel’s archenemy, Iran. More quietly, Israelis have increasingly argued that the best outcome for Syria’s two-and-a-half-year-old civil war, at least for the moment, is no outcome

For Jerusalem, the status quo, horrific as it may be from a humanitarian perspective, seems preferable to either a victory by Mr. Assad’s government and his Iranian backers or a strengthening of rebel groups, increasingly dominated by Sunni jihadis.

LUBP writers have consistently pointed to this harsh reality many months earlier, we are posting some excerpts:

Syria’s War, Another Tragedy on Euphrates: Who is Looking for What?

Unfortunately for Syrians, in the real world we live in, humanitarian concerns never trump nations’ blatant state and geopolitical interests. The American historian and polemicist Daniel Pipes is just being brutally candid when he writes: “Western powers should guide the conflict to stalemate by helping whichever side is losing. The danger of evil forces lessens when they make war on each other. – See more at: https://lubpak.com/archives/267831#sthash.M2n1RPFv.dpuf

The Jihadi Hydra in Syria under West’ Patronage

Western origin soldiers beheading an opponent in Syria, reveals nothing new. This is the same story from the blood-spattered tableau vivant being painted by Boko Haram in Nigeria to the slaughter of another human being of another human being in broad daylight on a London street to poor polio lady health-workers being brutally murdered in Pakistan. But the old news of Jihadist savagery it relays is worth dusting off and shouting from the rooftops with every new incident of savagery – See more at: https://lubpak.com/archives/269041#sthash.9O3TPTnC.dpuf

Is the Obama-led West being any better than Assad?

When it comes to the emerging world the US led western countries often act as a bunch of hypocritical bully boys and Syria is not allowed to be an exception. Qatar has been very forthcoming about their arms shipments to Syria, through the ‘coordination’ of the CIA. The US using the trite “line has been crossed” mantra and then wanting to further arm the Al Qaeda led opposition again exposes Obama’s hypocrisy. – See more at: https://lubpak.com/archives/270461#sthash.2LpvkgiE.dpuf

Who is Using Chemical Weapons in Syria?

The reality is Syrian conflict is ‘bad guys’ against ‘bad guys’. There are no good guys in this battlefield.

Assad’s regime is unscrupulously murderous to Stalinesque proportions, but it would make no sense for them to use chemical weapons. Why on earth would Assad pointlessly attack civilians in a city he controls rather than targeting militants in Aleppo?

Bizzare policies by Western governments and their new alliance with Al Qaeda

Al-Qaeda is now the West’s darling in Syria. So anybody who resists al-Qaeda – as Hezbollah recently decided to do – is a “terrorist.” – See more at: https://lubpak.com/archives/277427#sthash.yNkHYXHx.dpuf

West’s Apathy to Jihadists’ Oppression of the Christians

Yesterday’s killing of Custos of the Holy Land: Fr Franҫois Mourad by Islamist insurgents in al-Ghassaniyah is just the latest incident of Christians’ persecution at the hands of Obama-backed rebels in Syria. During the past 18 months well over a thousand Christians have been killed by the FSA goons and other rebel groups. Many of them have fallen prey to organized massacres in Christian neighbourhoods. The loss of property and belongings for the Christians in Syria has also been phenomenal, proportionately more than for any other community – See more at: https://lubpak.com/archives/271791#sthash.M4uQGDnH.dpuf

On U.S. approach to Syria: Enemies of your enemies are not necessarily your friends

The myopic policy we have followed of expediency has been shown to have failed results from funding the Mujahadeen in 1979, supporting Saddam Hussein in the 1980 Iran-Iraq war, to invading Iraq over non-existent WMD (before our young American troops are deployed into harm’s way, we must have transparent reasons, clear strategies and goals, and reasonable exit plans), and a decade of hopeless counterinsurgency in Afghanistan, ending in misreading the Arab Spring, and siding with Muslim Brotherhood against our former ally, the brutal dictator Mubarak. As an American patriot I find these inconsistencies difficult to reconcile. – See more at: https://lubpak.com/archives/264349#sthash.PIgtFQhx.dpuf
