Shia genocide, complicity of judiciary and the attempts to stifle dissent – by Haider Karrar

Today Pakistan is in the midst of a low grade war against its minority Shia Muslim population. This is the same Pakistan whose founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah had said:

“Minorities, to whichever community they may belong, will be safeguarded. Their religion, faith or belief will be secure. There will be no interference of any kind with their freedom of worship. They will have their protection with regard to their religion, faith, their life and their culture. They will be, in all respects, the citizens of Pakistan without any distinction of caste and creed”

But today’s Pakistan is contrary to that visioned by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Pakistan was founded for all the Indian Muslims, as well as non-Muslims, not for a particular group with a particular caste or creed. Today instead of giving rights to the minorities they are deprived of it. Shia genocide is spreading in Pakistan as a rapid fire and it is completely neglected by the higher authorities which include Pakistan Government, Supreme Court, Security Agencies, Human Right Organizations and the Law Enforcing Agencies. Shia Muslims are facing relentless violence and profound discrimination.

A car bomb outside a Shia mosque in Quetta during Ramadan, a suicide bombing of a Shia procession in Lahore, Shia doctors systematically shot in Karachi, killing of the Hazara Shias in Mustang near Quetta and the massacre of Shias in Parachinar etc. This all shows the negligence of our higher authorities. Who is behind the Shia genocide? The Government whose President is himself a Shia Muslim has turned its back as if there are no Shia rights in the country, Courts release terrorists declaring them as innocent, Media avoids to give coverage to the Shias & suppress their voices, and the agencies who are responsible in making the organizations like Lashkar-e-Jhangvi & Sipah-e-Sahaba.

If we see our history, Shia Muslims have played a major part not only during independence but also after the independence of Pakistan. The country’s founding father, Mohammed Ali Jinnah, belonged to Shia sect, the Khoja community. Many of Jinnah’s top lieutenants in the Pakistan movement were Shia. Not only that in the early decades of independence, Pakistan had two Shia presidents and at least one Shia prime minister. The list of prominent generals, businessmen, ambassadors and newspaper editors from the community is too long to recount.

Presently Government is of PPP whose founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, who ruled from 1971 to 1977, is described by Vali Nasr of Tufts University as marking “the pinnacle of Shia power in Pakistan.” When her daughter Benazir Bhutto became the Prime Minister started calling herself Sunni. Her husband and the current President maintains a studied silence on the subject, an apparent attempt to attract Shia support without tempting fundamentalist Sunni ire.

Why so much silence on the Shia Genocide? Why it is necessary to change the caste to acquire the higher office? The answer is still unanswered.

In July of this year after prosecutors failed to find evidence of his alleged involvement in the murders of scores of Shia, the Supreme Court released Malik Ishaq, leader of the banned Sunni sectarian group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. He promptly received a hero’s welcome from his followers. Who is behind his release? Why our courts are unable to punish those who are involved in Shia Massacre despite having all the evidence? Why the banned organization Sipah-e-Sahaba takes out a rally near the ISI headquarter in Islamabad? Why Chief Justice of Pakistan is silent on all this?

Recently CJP have taken suo moto action on Ateeqa Odho liquor case but why is he silent on the killing of the Hazara Shias in Balochistan? Why is CJP not taking the suo moto action on the rally of the banned organization SSP? Why CJP is silent on the Mumtaz Qadri case who murdered Governor of Punjab Salman Taseer? What force is stopping CJP from all this? or CJP himself don’t take interest in Shia’s at all?Our judiciary is equally involved in the Shia Massacre as those terrorist. People of Parachinar protest almost every single day in front of the National Assembly of Pakistan but CJP don’t care to take the suo moto action and provide them with their rights.

Not only the CJP but also the voices of the people are suppressed who stand against the Shia genocide. One of the examples of this is Laibaah (currently @Laibaah1 on Twitter) who raised her voice for the minorities and against those human right organizations who declared this Shia Genocide as ethnic violence. Her voice was suppressed and was muted by the urban-centric fake liberals. Her social network account was blocked.

How can we expect Pakistan to provide equal rights and freedom of speech all of its citizens if officials of reputable human rights organizations in Pakistan are involved in active suppression of free speech?
