Book Review: Punjabi Taliban
In the following article, Hamid Akhtar offers a review of Mujahid Hussain’s book “Punjabi Taliban”. The book reveals the linkages between the ISI, Sipah-e-Sahaba and certain pro-PML-N politicians and religious leaders in Punjab. The book also reveals how jihadi and sectarian elements present in different forms (e.g. Sipah-e-Sahaba, Lashkar-e-Jhangavi, Taliban etc) were able to kill religious minorities, e.g. Shias, Ahmadis and Christians, without any fear of the force of law because of the powerful support available to these groups by the ISI. Hamid Akhtar suggests that reading this book may help refute the pro-ISI and pro-Taliban propaganda by agents such as Khalid Khwaja and his cohorts in Pakistani media, politics and establishment.
Remembring Sohail Qalandar
Hashmat Sahar (singer: Pekhawar ke Parhar ma Jorrawa) once told me that a Peace Walk was Organised by peshawar based Journalsits and civil society activist after the People Mandi Blast in Peshawar. Sohail Qalandar invite me to participate in the peace walk and sing the song “Pekhawar ke Parhar ma Jorrawa”.
Hashmat said i was scared of everyday bomb blasts in Peshawar,so i informed Sohail Qalandar that i will not be vailabe at that day……But On the PeaceWalk Day sohail Qalandar came to my house with his Two sons and said during walk my one son will be at your Right side and other will be at your left side don’t worry…

We not lost only a Journalist but a very brave Pashtun,Who stood against the taliban Thugs and criminals and thier supportes.
Sohail was my best friend, and now he is no more with us.
I met with him for first time, when I was news editor in daily Kasoti. Then he arrested in Mardan and we all journalists came very hard on govt. Time passed and he joined me in Surkhab as chief reporter. Those were our struggle days. Then the Peshawar Press Club elections, he defeated our whole panel with a bang. He belonged to Dustoor group and most of our Barna group members voted for him.
I moved to US by the end of 2000 and he joined Express as resident editor. Whenever I visited Pakistan, we met and talked about past when we used to work together. Now he is gone in the age of 44 just like me.
Lets pray for him and his family. Can someone convoy my condolence to his younger brother Nosharwane Qalandar? Or provide his cell phone so that I can call and talk with him about my friend Sohail?
