Congratulations, Asma Jahangir won the SCBA elections – by pejamistri
Asma Jahangir becomes first female SCBA president; success of democracy in Pakistan
I was in my class teaching a very dry subject when I saw an email message that simply stated what I had longed to hear: “Asma Jahangir wins”. I didn’t need to know any further details as a wish had been accomplished to see an honest and principled woman become the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association. But why did I wish for her to win? Here are some reasons:
- She calls a spade, a spade. Never minces words about matters which have been left for the bigots to decide and comprehend
- She had become vocal against what she saw as “playing to the galleries” by the supreme court judges
- She questioned verdicts based on the “playing to the galleries” and openly denouncing them
- She questioned mindless laws like Article 62-F of the constitution that calls for a member of Parliament to be “sagacious, righteous and non-profligate and honest and ameen”, something which is extremely subjective and not provable. Her views on laws related to Zina ordinance and Blasphemy are something which the right winged media and pseudo-liberals have never liked
- She has leaning towards the left and has for sure without an iota of doubt always been against military dictatorship.
- Ever since she openly criticized the judgment on NRO, she has been a target for Ansar Abbasi-Ahmed Noorani duo at Jang and The News. In a matter when Ansar Abbasi was apparently threatened by SMS, she condemned the act and fully supported Ansar Abbasi as this was “assumed” to be against freedom of press. The same reporter, Ahmed Noorani only in January was to record her conversation against her knowledge and print the words “ulloo kay pathay” which she said. Though she said something which was her opinion, the same were given undue headlines by Jang and The News.
- It seemed that Jang and The News always considered her to be a strong candidate for the position of SCBA President. A vilification campaign was launched against her that continued till 27th of October. A story titled “Lawyers worried over Asma’s stand” was made by none other than Ahmed Noorani on the polling day. Maybe Jang and The News thought that they replicate what they did against Sheikh Rasheed in Rawalpindi bye-elections. (We will be doing a detailed post on the stories done by Ansar-Noorani duo against her)
- Upon winning the election, she gave two important statements which will hopefully guide her tenure:
-
- Mayn News aur Jang kee ghalat campaign kay bawajood jeeti hoon aur mayn unn propagandists ko batana chahti hoon, News aur Jang mayn bethayn hayn kay mayn unhayn sahafi nahee samajhti. Hum zard sahafat ko hamesha criticise karayn gay
After the disaster in the shape of Qazi Anwar who played in the hands of Ansar Abbasi/Ahmed Noorani and Shahid Masood, we can only hope for sanity to return to the SCBA. It also shows that after a very long time, a proper division between people leaning towards the left and those stuck in the right was visible and the left won! It is a good omen for all of us who have wanted sanity at the top and hopefully Asma Jahangir will be able to provide that.
At the end I hope that Geo now plays “Hum Dekhayn Gey” which they ran endlessly during the restore CJ movement. Faiz must have been tossing and turning in his grave seeing his ghazal being (mis)used by the rightists. Well, why would Geo play it now. It’s group has now been openly attacked by Asma Jahangir. As they wont play it, you can read it below:
I will emphasise that “Goonjay ga anal haq ka naara, jo mayn bhee hoon aur tum bhee ho”.
Another important aspect is that leftists or liberals have traditionally had issues with each other on petty matters which is why we never see the real liberals coming up as winners in our country. The rightist forces always huddle together to achieve their desired results. We have seen IJI being formed with a view of stopping PPP from winning the 1988 elections; we saw all the mullas joining hands to win significant number of seats as MMA in 2002 and in 2007 we saw the rightist nexus of PML-N/Media/Judges join together to make life miserable.
And for our friends in Jang, The News and Geo. It was your second loss in a week. First was the non-judgement on 18th Amendment allowing there to be no dama-dam mast qalandar and second was today in the form of Asma Jahangir’s win. Remember, once is a fluke, twice is a streak!!
Well money can buy anything…like zardai buyed asma…but those million of people who participated in long march are still ready to kick zardari out of office!
democrat, if money can buy anything, zardari will also buy hamid gul and imran khan, but he does not buy trash. who does?
you are talking about those million of people who live in mansoora? i thought they were a few hundred not millions; ever counted the JI and PTI votes?
its a great great day for Pakistan
Well done Asma. Tu jeeay hazarun saal!
Asma, congratulations on your landmark success- you really deserve it, your success is a victory of liberal and democratic forces.

The Prime Minister wished the newly elected President of SCBA all success in her future endeavours.
Women of Pakistan-Asma Jahangir
by Laila Kazmi
In his inaugural address to the nation in 1947, the founding father and first Governor General of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, advised people of the newly created nation, “[If you] work together in a spirit that everyone of you no matter what is his colour, caste or creed, is first, second and last a citizen of this state with equal rights, privileges and obligations, there will be no end to the progress you will make.”
With the loss of the guiding spirit of Muhammad Ali Jinnah shortly after independence and with passing of time the hope of freedom and opportunities which gave birth to a new independent nation diminished into hopelessness brought on by poverty, rampant corruption, and illiteracy. It is an environment ripe for fundamentalists who wish to sway the public with emotional religious rhetoric. Rather than aiming to subside illiteracy and corruption, most often it is the women and minorities who get subdued and repressed by these religious fundamentalists. In such circumstances, human rights activists dedicated to the cause of obtaining equal rights and justice represent hope for those being persecuted. Asma Jahangir is one such human rights activist and lawyer.
She has spent most of her career defending the rights of women, religious minorities, and children of Pakistan. Aided in her mission by fellow activists and colleagues from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, she has continued her battle for justice amidst constant threats to her safety. Her willingness to relentlessly defend victims of rape, women seeking divorce from abusive husbands, people accused of blasphemy, her work on the issues of child labor, and her continuous criticism of political parties has made her one of the most controversial figures in Pakistan. She has served as the chairperson of the Pakistan Human Rights Commission. In 1998, she was appointed Special Rapporteur of the UN Commission on Human Rights.
Asma learned the business of law and politics at an early age. Her father spent much of his life in and out of prison for his political views which included open criticism of actions of Pakistani military in Bangladesh. Asma was eighteen when she filed her first petition to have her father released from jail and started working with lawyers on his defense.
In 1980, Asma Jahangir and her sister, Hina Jilani, got together with few fellow activists and lawyers and formed the first law firm established by women in Pakistan. They also helped form the Women’s Action Forum (WAF) in the same year. The first WAF demonstration was in 1983 when some 25-50 women took to the streets protesting the famous Safia Bibi case. Safia, a young blind girl, had been raped yet had ended up in jail on the charge of zina. “We (their law firm) had been given a lot of cases by the advocate general and the moment this demonstration came to light, the cases were taken away from us.” Asma recalls. (Dawn-The Reviewer, April 2, 1998, “A ray of hope”)
Asma has been a staunch critic of the Hudood ordinance and blasphemy laws of Pakistan. These laws were introduced in the Pakistani constitution during the 10-year dictatorship of General Zia-ul-Haq. According to the of the Hudood ordinance, a person accused of adultery or zina can be sentenced to death and according to the blasphemy law, a person accused of speaking or acting against Islam can also be sentenced to death. Whatever the initial intents of these laws might have been, the result has been false imprisonment of hundreds of innocent men and women. Women who dare to report a rape are often accused of zina and locked up in prison while their offenders walk free and are never questioned or brought to justice. The blasphemy law has also resulted in false imprisonment and even death of many Pakistani Christians, Hindus, and even some Muslims.
In her article for Dawn, published October 2, 2000, titled “Whither are We!” Asma demands that the government of General Musharraf work to improve the record of human rights domestically. Citing examples of human rights abuses, she wrote, “A Hindu income tax inspector gets lynched in the presence of the army personnel for allegedly having made a remark on the beard of a trader. Promptly, the unfortunate Hindu government servant is booked for having committed blasphemy, while the traders and the Lashkar-e-Tayaba activists were offered tea over parleys. A seventy-year-old Mukhtaran Bibi and her pregnant daughter Samina are languishing in Sheikhupura jail on trumped-up charges of blasphemy.”
In 1995, Asma Jahangir received numerous death threats for her defense of Salamat Masih, a fourteen-year old Christian boy sentenced to death for allegedly writing blasphemous words against Islam on the wall of a mosque. In 1999, Asma and her sister, Hina Jilani, a fellow lawyer and activist, were again subject to death threats after representing Samia Sawar, a 32 year old women who was seeking divorce from her abusive husband. Samia had turned to her family for help but they had refused to help her attain a divorce. When Samia continued to seek a divorce, Samia’s family had her murdered in broad daylight in the very law offices of Asma and Hina. Apparently, the family believed that Samia’s actions were dishonorable to the family.
“Eventually things will have to get better. However, the way they will improve is not going to be because of the government or the elite leadership, or the political leadership, or the institutions of our country, most of which have actually crumbled. It will be the people of the country themselves who will bring about the change in society because they have had to struggle to fend for themselves at every level.” – Asma Jahangir, Interview by Farahnaz Junejo, Zameen, Dec 1997.
“Democracy is Survival for Women”
An Interview with Asma Jehangir
In 1980, Asma Jehangir founded Pakistan’s first all-women law office. Later, she established the Women’s Action Forum to advance the concerns of women who suffered under Zia ul-Haq’s Islamization decrees. A recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, Asia’s most prestigious human rights honor, she declined an offered post as the first woman judge on the Pakistan Supreme Court, stating she thought she could effect more change as an activist- and she was Chairwoman of Pakistan’s Human Rights Commission.

Asma Jahangir’s victory is not the loss of Jang or GEO. In my opinion it is the loss of democracy, nobility and justice.
She is an anti Islam, very ultra liberal and US aided women, working for capitalist and jew agenda in Pakistan in the shadow of human right and progressive though.
She has many time proved that she has no interest with the freedom of Judiciary, Parliament and media, she always have double Standard and just cares about her own capitalist and hidden interest.
Lowers those have no gumption like Ali Ahmed Kurd who even don’t know to speech in a civilized manner have supported this US aided woman
انصاف کا جنازہ ہے زرا دھوم سے نکلے
@Kashif, why is it that a person who has an approach different to what the “general public” has is termed as Anti-Islam, working for Jew and Capitalist agenda? This is extremely unfair of you!
There are so many issues that have been ingrained into our minds. e.g. tell me one textbook that you may have read which says that Pakistan was the aggressor in the 1965 war? Off course, I didnt know this till I was an adult!
I also do not believe in the man made interpretation of Hudood Ordinance, I believe in Azadi of women, I believe in laws to be fair and balanced and not subject to subjective interpretation. Does that make me Anti-Islam? Does that mean that my 5 times prayers are wasted? does that mean the Hajj I have performed is of no use?
I take serious exception to your comment related to Anti-Islam.
Tell me what is the difference between GW Bush and Our self-righteous right winged forces? GW Bush said “You are either with us or against us”. We lambasted the American approach. But over here you are doing the same thing. “If you agree with what we say, you are a Muslim, else you are Anti-Islam”!!!
@Ahmed,
Great article. Abdul, Sarah, Junaid, Arqam and others at the LUBP team is being appreciated by those who value democracy and are moderate and opposed to extremists. Thanks for stating so eloquently what many of us are feeling.
I actually like seeing loony comments like the one by Kashif as it clearly highlights what moderate, tolerant and progressive Pakistanis are up against in this country.
Munnawer Hasan ,Sufi muhammad ,Baitulah Mehsoud ,Mulla Umer ,Osama in LAdin ,Hameed Gul and other terrorists are actually anti Islam
طالبان کا جنازہ ہے ذرا دھوم سے نکلے
well Done Asma you thoroughly deserve it.
I have never said that LUBP is anti Islamic,
LUBP guys including Abdul, Ahmed and Aamir are my net friends and I really respect for there contribution. May be I have some minor differences with young and energetic LUBP and its team but I always been appreciate for there lot of work.
I have given my opinion about Asma, I have number of times experienced her and came to know that she is an anti Islam old lady and with old thoughts
@Kashif, it is not for us to judge who is a good muslim and who is not. Allah kay haan kon maqbool hay, uss ka sirf Allah hee ko maloom hay. LUBP is for sure not Anti-Islamic and you can also not say the same about Asma Jahangir. We support her for her being very clear headed about what she wants.
Like you, I had a personal experience with her for which I disliked her, but only a few days later she experienced the same thing … blackmail from those whom she had supported!
She is against the so called Sharia law implemented by Zia Ul Haq ,opposing Zia ul Haq Sharia cannot be called anti Islam .
“In my opinion it is the loss of democracy, nobility and justice.”
@Kashif Naseer: Do you even know the meanings of these words? Which of your Taliban friends follow any of these?
“I have given my opinion about Asma, I have number of times experienced her and came to know that she is an anti Islam old lady and with old thoughts”
@Kashif Naseer: Her problem is she can’t have Mullahs like you dictate what Islam should be which is invariably defined by you as what is in your own interests. This action of Asma ends your chaudrahat and there is the reason you and people like you hate her. Basically religious jageerdari is what she is against. And if we are going to prosper then we need to end all jageerdari s including and foremost religious jageerdari.

The PPP has three points agenda :
1.Take revenge from Pakitsan for the deaths of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto,Benazeer Bhutto,Murtaza Bhuttoa and Shahnawaz Bhutto.
2. Recover all their money which they were deprived to loot from Pakistan for the previous 15 years or so by the Generals.
3.Recover all their money, they spent for this period to run the party with interest and further profit etc.
Getting Asma Jahangir elected as President of SCBA is like

Why be silent when you can speak?
ISSUE BY MUHAMMAD YOUSUF NAQASH
Asma Jehangir, Chairperson of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, claims to champion the cause of humanity all over the world but observes criminal silence about gross Human Rights Violations at the hands of Indian uniformed forces in Jammu and Kashmir. Even publicly denying to talk about it. Why is she silent and what does she want to convey. During an interaction with media persons in both winter and summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir she makes her intentions clear by announcing that she is on a special limited mandate to India given by United Nations Organization to observe and report on freedom of religion and belief and is not mandated to talk about human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.
Now let’s understand her visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Nothing is hidden about it. She is a state guest enjoying the protocol and security arrangements of the state. She talks about limited mandate. Then how come she comments on elections in Jammu Kashmir and stresses for people’s involvement and participation in the forthcoming State Assembly elections and also goes a step ahead by declaring boycott of elections as Human Rights Violation. She even claims that the situation in Jammu Kashmir is normalizing. Such comments are puzzling, rubbing salt to the deep bleeding and festering wounds of people of Jammu and Kashmir who are under forced subjugation, striving hard, sacrificing and suffering perpetually for emancipation. The elections won’t emancipate them, rather further the subjugation. These are aimed at providing Kursi (chair) and material benefits to the opportunist class of politicians at the cost of supreme sacrifices and movement of freedom.
What made her to claim that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir is normalizing? Is this assessment based on any fact finding report by any impartial, international organization or agency. If it is so, please apprise the people about it, so that the illusion and confusion created is removed. If not then what made you to manipulate things and why? Why then are you toying with sentiments of people of Jammu and Kashmir by posing as a humanist? What you are stating is not a realistic comment. It is beyond your sight and reach to have on the spot factual assessment of the situation, given the state protocol you are enjoying as a state guest.
The Human Rights situation on which she chooses to seal her lips is a burning issue in Jammu Kashmir, inviting world media, and international and south Asian observers’ attention daily. Given the gravity of this issue, it occupies the front pages of print media and covered in electronic media as this issue is related to the gross Human Rights Violations of masses including men, women, elderly and the ailing. Jammu and Kashmir is recognized as a beautiful prison and the largest concentration camp in the world which caged under the siege of more than 8 lakh Indian occupation forces that carry on anti human acts, unabated and with impunity. These forces of occupation have been empowered by Draconian black laws like Disturbed Area Act and Armed Forces special powers Act. These black laws have made the local system of justice and International human laws including universal declaration of Human Rights and International bill of rights redundant.
No one can deny that Asma Jehangir of Pakistan origin is recognized as a renowned human rights activist and has been assigned United Nations responsibility in acknowledgement to such activity. Whatever she has done in the rest of the world in this regard is best known to her. It is difficult to comment on this. When it comes to Jammu and Kashmir related Human Rights abuses issue, her track record has always been discouraging. She has never ever pinpointed how people of Kashmir are suffering at the hands of Indian forces. She had not felt concerned about the sufferings of people. She has never lent a helping hand in this regard. And how she behaved on her visit to Jammu and Kashmir is on the expected lines. She may be feeling hurt at the sufferings of others but as far as the people of J&K are concerned she, seems unconcerned. And what type of human mission is she promoting?
My assessment of her visit and past experience about her work is that she is obviously on an India Mission to Jammu and Kashmir, advocating democracy of India, making suggesting rather stressing people here to participate in elections. In the garb of International observer and Human Rights activist she is here to certify to the world that the situation in Jammu Kashmir has altogether changed towards normalcy, and there is nothing like what the whole world concerns and cries about. She has been asked by India to pose as a real Pakistani in order to deceive the people of Jammu and Kashmir and make them believe that her words carry Pakistan sanctity. People are the best judges.

We have very narrow mental approach as comments by some people are really disgusting. They blamed Asma Jhangir as supporter of PPP. Irrespective of the fact either she is supporter of PPP or not? She deserved this win as every one knows that she is more competent than his rival. If Asma is supporter of PPP, one must not forget that opposition candidate was supported by Ex-ISI head, PML-N, JI and Judiciary. Asma’s victory show that people really hate PML-N, JI and so called Cheap Justice for their anti-democratic policies and vested interests. I know that both PML-N and Judiciary is fix by the overwhelming victory of Asma Jhangir because she can not work according to aspirations of Judiciary and PML-N like Qazi Anwar.

Aitzaz Ahsan ,a ‘Pakistani’ politician in the garb of a lawyer has started making mockery of the system. By demanding restoration of Judiciary by an executive order, he has started showing signs of desperation. His Indian friend Ashok Chaturvedi Indian Intelligence Chief is in hot water and Aitzaz has been tasked to show some results as soon as possible so that Ashok can continue as RAW Chief.
After spending over 500 million dollars since March 2007, when lawyer movement started, Democracy could not be derailed in Pakistan. Aitzaz who enjoys aged long relations with Indian Establishment since the time he was founding V Chairman of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. He has retained that relationship and as Interior Minister he had handed over list of Sikhs separatists to Indian government.
In March,2007 when Justice Iftikar Chaudhry was ousted as Chief Justice, he was tasked with an initial tranche of eighty millions which was handed to Asma Jehangir another Human Rights activists in London by RAW officer Sushil Trevidi in London in Indian High Commission.
Aitzaz Ahsan and Asma Jehangir were tasked to create anarchy in Pakistan and derail democratic process and at the same time undermine the respect and honour of Pakistan’s armed forces. . At the same time create differences between Musharraf and Bush administration. The amount which was spent for separatist movements in Baluchistan were also guaranteed for Aitzaz Ahsan.
The objectives were partially achieved. Musharrf’s move to remove his unform and imposition of emergency foiled the designs and holding of elections further strengthened Musharraf’s position. These developments unnerved Indian Intelligence and Ashok Chutervedi came under fire. Aitzaza has to make another desperate attempt otherwise his Indian connection will stop nourishing him. Lets wait and watch, who wins in this intelligence war.
Excellent post Ahmed . I don’t why Asma Jahangir is labeled as Zardari’s candidate. People lawyer forum supported the candidate which has to supported .
@humza, how easily and conveniently you forgot the Rs.90 Crore distributed by the 21st century Chanakya “Dr.” Barbar Awan to get the “namaskaram” lady lawyer Asma Jahangir elected to SCBA.Another achievement with the same bribery is the nomination of Khalid Ranjha “the sacked Judge” in the Judicial Commission.
Long live Jiyala culture and “damn-u-cracy”, jeay Bhutto!!!!!!!!!!!!
@S Khilji
Did you forget this slap by jiyalas on your face and your mentor Zia-ul-Haq’s face?

This is the reality of your leader Zia-ul-Batil.

Ponies of Imran Khan, Munawar Hassan such as yourself are not worthy of pity.
@Sarah Khan, Well done Sarah but you are barking at the wrong tree as usual. Do you know the fitting title of Ziaul
Haq, “RAEES UL MUNAFIQEEN AMIR USH SHAYATEEN” Imran Khan and the whole Jamaat Islami, JUI etc also come in the same category.
But unfortunately the jiyalas has also proved to be equal to these hypocrites.
Please open your eyes and minds and try to see the real picture and think about the country first which is being systematically looted and destroyed by the Generals for past five decades, as well as politicians like MNS, ZAB, BB and AZ etc. Though all other politicians do get their share but these two parties PPP & PML (A to Z all) are the other two in the looters and plunderers triangle which has eaten Pakistan like a cancer.
@Sara Khan, if you wanna see the true face of Asma Jahangir,
see the namaskar lady in this thread:

@S Khilji
Thanks to your insights, I am almost converted.
Given that all politicians are bad, what should the ‘jahil awaam’ including myself do now? Please show us light.

@S Khilji,
Please do not give us figures of Rs 90 crores created by none other than Ansar Abbasi. The amounts distributable were Rs. 39 crores and that is something which is declared in the Federal Budget. It is not a secret fund that is distributed.
On the matter of buying the lawyers, can you kindly tell me who is more renowned: Ahmed Awais or Asma Jahangir? Her struggle, whether right or wrong, is well known!!! Do you think lawyers who are voting in thr SCBA elections are those lawyers whose bars got the money? Can you please tell me how many members of Hafizabad Bar or TT Singh Bar or Phalia Bar are Supreme Court Advocates and hence members of SCBA.
Kindly check your facts and logic before making an allegation!
Lawyers to continue soft accountability of judiciary: Asma
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Newly-elected and outgoing members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) called on Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Thursday.
Speaking to the SCBA members, the chief justice said that the newly-elected SCBA body under the guidance of its president Asma Jahangir would work for the rule of law and strengthening of the country’s democratic system. He appreciated the efforts of Asma both within the country and abroad for restoration of judiciary after March 9, 2007.
He appreciating the role of SCBA’s outgoing president Qazi Muhammad Anwar and said Anwar had performed his job well and had cooperated with the bench in a professional manner.
Stressing the need of effective cooperation between the bench and bar, he said he was conscious of his duties and believed that there will be no difference between the bench and the bar and all the matters would be amicably solved with mutual consent of both sides.
Separately, Asma said the SCBA as a representative body of the lawyers community will continue soft accountability of the judiciary through a decent manner and would make its constructive voice heard. Asma said the body would no doubt resort to constitutional accountability of judges, but “only in extreme conditions and no one would be allowed to politicise the issue”. She announced that cooperation between bench and bar would continue, but at the same time a “required distance would also be maintained”.
Addressing the members of her team and former office bearers of the SCBA, she said that they would promote democratic norms.

Asma Jahangir’s election as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association is a success for liberal democratic forces in the country-and is a loss for yellow journalists, judicial dictatorship loyalists and especially all those saints, who were availing the perks and benefits after taking oath twice under PCO in 1999 and 2002 and now have become saints and champion of judiciary, were allotted plots in Islamabad worth millions of rupees by during the last two years. Asma Jahangir represents modern, progressive and forward-looking sections of Pakistani society across the globe. .Asma’s victory is a good omen for the democratic forces. It also indicates that the lawyers do not approve of an “over-reaching” judiciary and its actions to transgress on the powers of the parliament.
It is a nice gesture and right decision by the SBC members as well as is a good sign for democracy. I shall not say, it is victory of enlightened democratic wisdom over yellow pages, blackmailing, dictatorship particularly over siblings of dictators or over rigid, ignorant extremism……..
But for the friends who are feeling bad by victory of Asma I must say; do you think all who have given a damn—to the nasty propaganda against Asma and have voted for her…they all anti-islam,anti-pakistan????
Few have tried to prove that PPP is an anti-pakistan and anti-islam party!!!!
Have you ever though how many Pakistani are voting for PPP(beyond???? you mean they all are anti-islam and pakistan??? what a childish approach is……
she is still president of SCBA???
