Saudi-sponsored ISI using Takfiri Deobandi militants to hijack Pakistan elections: PPP, ANP and MQM’s press conference

KARACHI (30 April 2013): The political parties, which are being targeted by the Pakistani Taliban for having ‘secular views,’ late on Tuesday (30 April) said the coming May 11 polls are being hijacked by “local and international establishment,” DawnNews reported.

It is believed that Pakistan army’s intelligence agencies (local establishment) and Saudi Arabia (international establishment) are providing moral, ideological and logistic support to Takfiri Deobandi militants of Taliban and Sipah-e-Sahaba (aka Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat or Lashkar-e-Jhangvi).

Speaking during a joint-press conference held at the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) headquarters Nine-Zero in Karachi, Dr Farooq Sattar (MQM), Senator Rehman Malik (PPP) and Senator Shahi Syed (ANP) reiterated their stance to carry on with their respective electoral campaigns despite the terrorist threats.

At least 60 people have been killed in Deobandi militants’ attacks targeting politicians and political parties across Pakistan since April 11.

The three main parties of the outgoing coalition government – Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Awami National Party (ANP) and MQM – had earlier in the day also rejected the call to bring in the Army in Sindh.

All three leaders, during the press conference, vowed to foil the conspiracy of bringing an extremist, pro-Taliban, pro-Lashkar-pe-Jhangvi and right-wing government in the country.

“Militants want to divide Pakistan by bringing a pro-Taliban prime minister in the coming elections,” said former interior minister and PPP leader Rehman Malik.

He blamed the outgoing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government in Punjab of providing cover to banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ). Lashkar-e-Jhangvi is currently contesting elections in the name of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ aka Sipah-e-Sahaba) that is part of a Deobandi-Wahhabi political alliance led by Maulana Sami-ul-Haq Deobandi, known to have close links with Pakistan army and Saudi Arabia. The prevailing sectarian (mostly anti-Shia and anti-Sunni Barelvi) violence by Deobandi militants in Karachi and elsewhere in the country is due to that patronage, he added.

“Pakistani and international establishment are behind keeping the three liberal political parties of the country away from coming into power,” said MQM’s Farooq Sattar. He said there was no level playing field being provided to all parties on parity.

The MQM leader urged the interim government and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to fulfil their constitutional responsibility of ensuring free, fair and transparent elections.

ANP’s president of its Sindh chapter, Shahi Syed said that a conspiracy is being hatched against spirit of Islam and the survival of Pakistan. “Terrorists cannot frighten us……..its about time we stand together against the militants,” said Syed. “Taliban were assassins, are and will remain that,” he added.

The three leaders, prior to the press conference, held a consultative session to device a joint-electoral strategy for the coming polls.

“Terrorists have given a clear message to liberal political parties: they should either boycott elections or be ready to face terrorist attacks,” he said. Dr Sattar said that right-wing parties were being given undue advantage by extremist forces, adding other political parties were not being given opportunities to run election campaigns.

He urged the Election Commission of Pakistan and caretaker governments to ensure secure environment to all parties for running their election campaigns. “Liberal and enlightened parties are being made scapegoat to benefit some right-wing parties,” Dr Sattar said. He warned that if the country’s establishment did not play its due role for holding free and fair elections, liberal political forces will hold them equally responsible for terrorist attacks.

Rehman Malik of PPP termed terrorist attacks a conspiracy against the country’s integrity, adding that pro-Taliban parties were behind all such anti-state activities. The countrymen needed to know about the accord between right-wing parties and militants, he said. Malik said that Karachi would not have been burning if terrorists of Laskar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) were not provided safe heavens in Southern Punjab.

“Who is supporting LeJ terrorists in Punjab,” Rehman Malik questioned. He demanded of the ECP to take action against Sharif brothers in Pak Land and other scams. Malik said that the Sharif brothers were patronising Taliban just to protect their political future. He alleged that the PML-N and PTI were acting as sub-organisations of Taliban. ANP leader Shahi Syed said that ANP, MQM and PPP would not allow terrorists to make decision in Parliament.
