Here is a tribute to our Ahmadi brothers (and their families) who were mercilessly martyred yesterday (by the Punjabi Taliban / Sipah-e-Sahaba) while offering the Friday prayers in two mosques in Lahore.
This poem was written by renowned Urdu poet Obaidullah Aleem in 1971, and is still relevant today.

Bhutto’s grave mistake
Shaheed Zufliqar Ali Bhutto, founder of the Pakistan People’s Party, committed a grave mistake in 1974 by bowing to the Jamaat-e-(Ghair)Islami and other mullah’s pressure when Ahmadis were declared as non-Muslims by Pakistan’s parliament. We demand that the parliament must reverse that tyrannical piece of legislation as well as all other laws resulting in discrimination against Ahmadis and other minorities in Pakistan.
Jinnah’s ideals
We believe that a state must have no jurisdiction in deciding or confirming the faith of any individual or group. Faith is a matter of personal belief between one and one’s creator. Consistent with Jinnah’s speech in Pakistan’s first constituent assembly (11 August 1947), it is not state’s business to decide upon or interfere with any one’s faith.
General Zia-ul-Haq’s legacy
Pakistan today has an estimated 4 million Ahmadi population as its peaceful, law abiding citizens. Unfortunately, it is the only state to have officially declared the Ahmadis to be non-Muslims (1974). In 1984, military dictator General Zia-ul-Haq (a disciple of Maududi, founder of Jamaat-e-Islami), issued a series of laws forbidding Ahmadis to call themselves Muslim or to “pose as Muslims.” As a result, Ahmadis were disallowed to profess the Islamic creed publicly or call their places of worship mosques.
Ahmadis in Pakistan are also barred by law from worshipping in non-Ahmadi mosques or public prayer rooms, performing the Muslim call to prayer, using the traditional Islamic greeting in public, publicly quoting from the Quran, preaching in public, seeking converts, or producing, publishing, and disseminating their religious materials. These acts are punishable by imprisonment of up to three years.
Intolerant nation
What we witnessed yesterday (i.e., the Ahmadi massacre in two mosques) in Lahore is only a tiny tip of an iceberg. Deep inside several segments of Pakistani society, including its semi-educated urban class, bureaucracy, media, army, judiciary, politicians, schools, colleges and universities, is a deep hatred for ‘the other’, particularly for the others belonging to religious and ethnic minorities.
Once again, we are condemned to recite:

جماعت احمدیہ کے اراکین پاکستان میں متعصبانہ اور پرتشدد رویے کی شکایت تو اکثر کرتے رہتے ہیں لیکن اتنا بڑا حملہ ان پر اس سے پہلےکبھی نہیں کیا گیا۔
جماعت احمدیہ کےترجمان سلیم الدین کا کہنا ہے کہ اس کے علاوہ اس سے پہلے کسی حملے میں طالبان کا نام نہیں آیا تھا لیکن اب ٹی وی چینلز پر طالبان کی جانب سے ذمہ داری قبول کرنے کی بات کی جارہی ہے۔
جماعت احمدیہ کے اراکین سنہ انیس سو چوہتر سے پہلے مسلمانوں کا ہی ایک فرقہ گردانے جاتے تھے لیکن ذوالفقار علی بھٹو کے دور میں پارلیمان نے انہیں غیر مسلم بلکہ کافر قرار دیدیا۔
سنہ انیس سو چوہتر میں یہ معاملہ پارلیمان میں پہنچنے سے پہلے پاکستان کے مختلف شہروں میں جماعت احمدیہ کے اراکین کے خلاف باقاعدہ تحریک چلائی گئی، جلسے جلوس ہوئے اور پرتشدد واقعات میں چند ہلاکتیں بھی ہوئیں۔
اس ہی دور میں مذہبی سیاسی جماعتیں اس معاملے کو پارلیمان میں لے گئیں جہاں باون گھنٹے تک جماعت احمدیہ کے خلفیہ مرزا ناصر احمد اراکین پارلیمان اور علماء کرام کے سوالات کے جوابات دینے کےباوجود خود کو کافر قرار دیئے جانے سے نہ بچا سکے۔
جماعت احمدیہ کے ترجمان کا کہنا ہے کہ یہیں سے ان کے برے دنوں کا آغاز ہوا اور جب سنہ انیس سو چوراسی میں ان کے خلاف ایک نیا قانون آنے کے بعد ان کے خلاف پرتشدد کارروائیوں میں تیزی آگئی۔
یہ امتناع قادیانیت آرڈیننس صدر جنرل ضیاءالحق کےدور میں جاری ہوا تعزیرات پاکستان کی دفعہ دو سواٹھانوے سی اور دوسواٹھانوے بی کے تحت اب جماعت احمدیہ کا کوئی رکن خود کو مسلمان ظاہرکرے، اپنی عبادت گاہوں کے لیے کوئی اسلامی اصطلاح استعمال کرے، اسلام وعلیکم کہے یا بسم اللہ پڑھ لے، اپنی عبادت گاہ کو مسجد کہے یا اذان دے تو اسے تین برس قید کا سامنا کرنا پڑے گا۔
جماعت احمدیہ کے ترجمان کا کہنا ہے کہ فرقہ وارانہ کشیدگی تو ہمیشہ رہتی ہے لیکن جب ریاست ہی ایسے قوانین بنائے جن کی بنیاد منافرت پر ہو تو پھر نفرت انگیزی میں اضافہ ہی ہوتا ہے۔
انھوں نے بتایا کہ اس قانون کے نافذ ہونے کے بعد جمعہ والے حملے سے پہلے تک ایک سو نو افراد کو محض احمدی ہونے کی وجہ سے ہلاک کردیا گیا۔زیادہ تر افرادکو ٹارگٹ کلنگ میں مارا گیا تھا۔
جمعہ کے واقعہ سے قبل ایک بڑا واقعہ سنہ دوہزار پانچ میں سیالکوٹ میں پیش آیا تھا جہاں ان کی عبادت گاہ میں فائرنگ کرکے آٹھ احمدیوں کو ہلاک کیا گیا تھا۔
پاکستان میں مسلمانوں کی اکثریت سے جماعت احمدیہ کے ٹکراؤ کی بنیادی وجہ یہ ہے کہ احمدیہ فرقے کے لوگ مرزا غلام احمد کو ایک نبی تصور کرتے ہیں لیکن وہ ساتھ ہی یہ بھی کہتے ہیں کہ وہ کوئی نیا پیغام نہیں لائے تھے بلکہ ان کا مقصد پیغمبر اسلام حضرت محمد کے پیغام کو ہی آگے بڑھانا تھا۔ مسلمانوں کی ایک بڑی تعداد نہ صرف اس بات کو ماننے کوتیار نہیں بلکہ اس معاملے پر بہت سے لوگ مرنے مارنے پر اتر آتے ہیں۔
پاکستان میں احمدیوں کی مخالفت میں شدت کا آغاز قیام پاکستان کے بعد ہی اس وقت شروع ہوگیا تھا جب جماعت احمدیہ نے اپنا مرکز انڈیا کے شہر قادیان سے تبدیل کرکے پنجاب کے علاقے ربوہ میں منتقل کیا تھا۔ چھ برس بعد پرتشدد واقعات ہوئے متعدد احمدی ہلاک و زخمی ہوئے۔ لاہور سمیت پنجاب کے مخلتف شہروں میں کرفیو لگانا پڑا تھا۔
ضیاالحق کے دور میں اگرچہ مرکز پاکستان سے انگلینڈ منتقل ہوگیا لیکن ربوہ آج بھی پاکستان میں جماعت احمدیہ کی سرگرمیوں کا مرکز ہے اور وہاں آئے روز تحریک تحفظ ختم نبوت کے اراکین اور جماعت احمدیہ کے درمیان کسی نہ کسی مسئلے پر کشیدگی نظر آہی جاتی ہے۔
جماعت احمدیہ کے اراکین کا کہنا ہے کہ انہیں ہر شعبہ زندگی میں تعصب کا سامنا کرنا پڑتا ہے۔ ملازمتوں کامعاملہ ہویا آپس میں شادی بیاہ ہو۔ حتی کہ تجارت اور کاروبار میں بھی جماعت احمدیہ کے ارکان ہونے کی وجہ سے نقصان اٹھانا پڑتا ہے۔ جماعت احمدیہ کے کئی اراکین طلبہ اپنی تعلیم جاری نہیں رکھ سکے۔
جماعت احمدیہ کے ترجمان کا کہنا ہے کہ پاکستان میں قومی شناختی کارڈ کے حصول کے لیے یہ حلف نامہ دینا پڑتا ہے کہ درخواست دہندہ مرزاعلام احمد کو نبی نہیں مانتے اور پاسپورٹ پر مذہب کے خانے میں خصوصی اضافے کا مقصد احمدیوں کو قومی دھارے سے الگ کرنے کی کوشش ہے۔
پاکستان میں جماعت احمدیہ کے اراکین کے خلاف مختلف مذہبی جماعتیں تحریکیں چلاتی رہی ہیں لیکن مختلف چھوٹی بڑی اسلامی جماعتوں کے عہدیداروں نے ملکر ایک تنظیم تحفظ ختم نبوت بنا رکھی ہے۔
تحفظ ختم نبوت کے عہدیداروں کا الزام ہے کہ جماعت احمدیہ کے اراکین دراصل ملک دشمن اور اسلام دشمن عناصر ہیں جنہیں ان کے بقول ایک سازش کے تحت پاکستان میں پنپنے کی اجازت دی گئی ہے۔
جمعہ کو گڑھی شاہوکی مسجد میں موجود ایک احمدی سلیم الحق خان نے بتایاکہ حملہ آور جو نعرے لگا رہے تھے ان میں ختم نبوت زندہ باد، قادیانیت مردہ باد اور یارسول اللہ کے نعرے شامل ہیں

انھوں نے کہا کہ ’حملہ آوروں نے ان کی دوعبادت گاہوں پر اس وقت حملہ کیا جب ہزاروں لوگ عبادت میں مصروف تھے‘۔
ان کا کہنا ہے کہ ’حملہ آوروں کو اتنا موقع ملا کہ وہ آرام سے ان عبادت گاہوں کے بڑے ہالوں میں داخل ہوئے اور وہاں لوگوں کو نشانہ بنایا۔‘
ان کا کہنا ہے کہ ’ابھی نقصان کی مکمل تفصیلات نہیں ہیں لیکن ایک اندازے کے مطابق ان حملوں میں ساٹھ سے ستر افراد ہلاک ہوگئے ہیں۔‘
جماعت احمدیہ کے ترجمان کا کہنا ہے کہا ان کو نہیں معلوم اس حملے میں کون لوگ ملوث ہیں البتہ ان کے مطابق اس کا مقصد ’احمدیوں کو نقصان پہنچانا اور ان کو ڈرانا اور دھمکانا ہے‘۔
سلیم الدین نے کہا کہ’ پاکستان میں کئی برسوں سے پاکستان میں احمدیوں پر حملوں کے واقعات پیش آرہے ہیں اور ہم نے حکومت سے بارہا کہا کہ ہمیں تحفظ فراہم کیا جائے لیکن حکومت نے اس کی طرف کوئی توجہ نہیں دی۔‘
ان کو یہ بھی شکایت ہے کہ آج کے حملوں کے بعد بھی حکومت کے کسی اہلکار نے ان کے ساتھ کوئی رابط نہیں کیا۔
ان کا کہنا ہے کہ آج کے حملوں کے بعد یہ اندازہ لگایا جاسکتا ہے کہ ہم محفوظ ہیں یا نہیں۔
ترجمان نے مزید کہا کہ ہم پرامن لوگ ہیں ہم سڑکوں پر آکر احتجاج نہیں کرتے ہیں اور ہم اپنا معاملہ اللہ پر چھوڑا ہے اور وہیں ہمارا بدلہ لیں گے۔

THE ORIGINAL SIN
I have to admit that all I really wanted to say or post today was vile swearing. At the pea-brained ‘jihadis’ with their pubic hair beards, at their bastard ‘teachers’ and Wahabbi funders, at the ass-wipe Pakistani establishment nee military that nurtured both of them, at the narrow-minded fat-assed bigoted mullahs who protect them and the moronic and blind politicians and bureaucrats that continue to mollycoddle them. There are really no civilized words to react to what has happened today in Lahore. 80+ innocent people, children included, gunned down while praying in their ‘places of worship’, places we are not even allowed to call mosques! And for what? Because ‘they’ don’t fit in with ‘our’ puritannical idea of ‘our’ religion.
I keep coming back to the ‘original sin’ that did not begin this whole process of demonizing other sects and religions, but certainly sanctified it: the 1974 act of a democratic parliament, led by the secular and socialist Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, that declared Ahmedis as non-Muslims. Of course there had been anti-Ahmedi rabble rousing from much earlier – remember that the anti-Ahmedi Khatm-e-Nabuwat movement began in the early 1950s – but never before had the state officially sided with the mob. This act laid the basis, in my opinion, for the officially sanctified bigotry, persecution and oppression that followed under Mardood-e-Momin Ziaul Haq and continued under others, including the pointless declaration we must all append our names to, to get ID cards or passports. This original sin was not by the mullahs who had been braying for such a declaration for long and rioting in support of it, but by Pakistan’s democrats, secularists, intelligentsia, leftists, liberals and other minorities such as the Shia who acquiesced to it. Truly, if ever there was short-sightedness among Pakistan’s establishment (and there are plenty of examples of it) this was it. Hereafter, a seed had been sown in the collective psyche, that not only was it okay to declare as heretics others who did not adhere to one’s version of religion, but that violence and mob rule could be used to achieve your goals. The nurturing of extremist thought during Ziaul Haq’s (mis)rule and its repercussions in the shape of today’s barbaric attacks (and earlier targeting of Shias, Hindus and Christians) are a logical continuation of the original sin.
I know what the critical reaction to my statement is going to be. From the right, it will almost surely consist of theological arguments against the Ahmedis. From the left, some may argue about whether the original sin may, in fact, be the 1949 Objectives Resolution – which brought Islam into the constitution contrary to everything Jinnah stood for and would have thought proper – or even the concept of a state founded in the name of religion. I really have no desire to enter into a pointless theological debate with the right, other than to question whether they consider themselves bigger arbiters than Allah Himself. As far as I am concerned, heresy is between the Creator and the subject, who am I to make judgements about others’ religious convictions? The argument on the left as far as the Objectives Resolution is concerned may have merit. (I don’t subscribe to the negation of the idea of Pakistan as a whole simply because even states not founded on the basis of religion, such as India e.g. have seen horrific episodes of violence based on religion.) However, in my humble opinion, whereas the misguided Objectives Resolution did not actively profess prejudice and discrimination (in fact, believed it was standing against it), the anti-Ahmedi act of 1974 actively enshrined prejudice and discrimination.
Oh, but look at what some of our moronic opinion-makers say in response to today’s carnage. There’s Brigadier Imtiaz Billa on Business Plus suggesting an American conspiracy to force the Pakistan army to conduct an operation in North Waziristan and Southern Punjab and to malign Islam and Pakistan. Here’s Lahore Commissioner Khusro Pervaiz immediately pointing to Indian involvement because “the operation was conducted on the anniversary of Pakistan’s nuclear tests.” There’s some other maulvi on Geo’s Pachas Minute claiming that Ahmedis have never been targeted “like this” before in Pakistan and that this shows that this is “not sectarian violence but just terrorism.” And of course there is the usual chorus, of “these are not Muslims since Muslims could never do something so heinous.” Will Pakistanis ever learn to look inward? Or understand cause and effect?
Thankfully, here’s the moronic Punjab law minister Rana Sanaullah (half-heartedly) admitting the linkage between the attackers and some madrassahs and even the Tableeghi Jamaat at Raiwind. And here’s a shaken Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif finally realizing that these extremists are not potential voters that deserve covert support, but barbarians who need to be eliminated. Ah, but isn’t he saying the same thing as his arch-nemesis Musharraf now? And does he have the balls to do what really needs to be done: a repeal of all discriminatory laws and practices that promote the mentality he finds so abhorrent now?

گھر سے قریب ہونے کے باعث امام بارگاہ کے بیشترانتظامی امور اسی محلے کے نوجوان انجام دیتے تھے۔ صفائی ستھرائی، پانی کی سبیلیں، حفاظتی انتظامات وغیرہ۔ اور اتوار کی دوپہر ہونے والے خودکش حملے کے بعد سب سے زیادہ لاشیں بھی اس محلے میں لائی گئیں۔
ساتھ ہی ایک دیوار پر لگے نوٹس بورڈ پر یہ تحریر ہاتھ سے لکھ کر چسپاں کی گئی ہے۔’لواحقین اپنی لاشیں وصول کرنے کے بعد چیک کر لیں اگر ان کے اعضاء پورے نہ ہوں تو ہسپتال انتظامیہ سے رابطہ کیا جائے‘۔
یہ تحریر بتا رہی تھی کہ اس ہسپتال میں لاشیں کس حالت میں لائی گئی ہوں گی۔ اسی ضمن میں مزید معلوم کرنے پر بتایا گیا کہ جو لاشیں درست حالت میں تھیں انہیں چارپائیاں مہیا کی گئی ہیں جبکہ ٹکڑوں کی شکل میں ہسپتال آنے والی لاشوں کے لیے لکڑی کے تابوت کا بندوبست کیا جا رہا ہے۔
Ironically, Jamat Ahmadiya fully supported Bhutto in 1970 elections, Mirza Tahir ( who was not Khalifa at that time) personally distributing PPP’s pamphlets on his bicycle. But Bhutto chose to stand by his worst enemies i.e., Jamat-e-Islami, instead of Jamat Ahmadiya. This was his gravest mistake as he failed to understand that Mullahs will never be happy with him , no matter what he gives them.

Ahmadis demand protection after attacks

LAHORE: Leaders of the Ahmadi community demanded better government protection Saturday as they buried many of the at least 80 members killed by militants at two of the group’s worship places.
The request could test the government’s willingness to take on hard-line militants whose influence is behind decades of discrimination against the Ahmadis in the Sunni Muslim-majority country.
The attacks occurred minutes apart Friday in two neighbourhoods in Lahore. Two teams of gunmen, including some in suicide vests, stormed the worship places and sprayed bullets at worshippers while holding off police.
Thirteen people died overnight at hospitals, raising the death toll to 93, said Raja Ghalab Ahmad, a local Ahmadi leader. Dozens were hurt.
Waseem Sayed, a US-based Ahmadi spokesman, said it was the worst attack in the group’s 121-year history.
Local TV channels reported that the Punjabi Taliban had claimed responsibility.
Ahmad called on the government to take action against the militant group, which also has attacked security, government and foreign targets throughout the country in recent years.
”Are we not the citizens of Pakistan?” he asked at the site of the attacks in the Garhi Shahu section of Lahore. ”We do have the right to be protected, but unfortunately we were not given this protection.”
Ahmadis are reviled as heretics by mainstream Muslims for their belief that their sect’s founder was a saviour foretold by the Quran. Many Muslims say Ahmadis are defying the basic tenet of Islam that says Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is the final prophet, but Ahmadis argue their leader was the saviour rather than a prophet.
Pakistan in the 1970s declared Ahmadis a non-Muslim minority. Ahmadis are prohibited from calling themselves Muslims or engaging in practices such as reciting Islamic prayers.
Mourners on Saturday began burying the victims of the attacks at a sprawling graveyard in Rabwa, a headquarters of the Ahmadis 90 miles northwest of Lahore. Hundreds of men, women and children wept near bodies covered with white sheets and lined up in an open area for the funeral.
In a sign of the sensitivity surrounding the group, several Pakistani leaders who condemned the attacks did not refer specifically to the Ahmadis in their statements. TV channels and newspapers avoided the word ”mosque” in describing the attacked sites, preferring ”places of worship.”
Interior Minister Rehman Malik said the federal government had alerted Punjab province’s administration about threats to the Ahmadi community, and that the latest warning was sent Wednesday.
Officials in Lahore said they were investigating Friday’s assaults.

ادھر پنجاب کے وزیر قانون رانا ثناء اللہ خان نے ایک نجی ٹی وی چینل کے پروگرام میں کہا ہے کہ لاہور میں ہونے والے حملے سکیورٹی اداروں کی کوتاہی کا نتیجہ ہیں۔ ان کا کہنا تھا کہ ابتدائی تفتیش سے پتہ چلا ہے کہ حملہ آوروں کی تعداد چھ کے قریب تھی اور وہ جنوبی اور شمالی وزیرستان سے دس زور قبل لاہور آئے تھے۔

The killers remained at the hospital until the doctor was declared dead, then they walked out of the building’s front entrance. Police registered the killers as unknown.
On September 9, 48 hours after the broadcast, Mr. Yousaf, a 75 year-old rice trader and district chief of the Ahmadi sect was killed on his way to prayer in Nawab Shah, Sindh province. Yousaf was fired on from people on motor bikes, and sustained three bullet wounds. He died on the way to the hospital. The assailants had taken a route past a police station. No one was arrested.

پنجاب پولیس کا کہنا ہے کہ لاہور میں احمدیوں کی عبادت گاہوں پر حملہ کرنے والوں کا تعلق کالعدم تنظیم تحریک طالبان پاکستان سے ہے اور ان کے نیٹ ورک کا سراغ لگا لیا گیا ہے۔
پولیس کےمطابق چاروں حملہ آور آٹھ روز پہلے قبائلی علاقے میران شاہ سے لاہور آئے تھے اور عبادت گاہوں پر حملہ کے دوران ان میں سے دو ہلاک ہوگئے، ایک زخمی ہے جبکہ ایک کو زندہ گرفتار کرلیاگیا۔
پریس کانفرنس میں پولیس نے حملہ آور سے ملنے والا اسلحہ بھی ذرائع ابلاغ کے نمائندوں کو دکھایا۔ ادھر پولیس نے ماڈل ٹاؤن سےگرفتار کیےگئے ایک حملہ آور عبداللہ عرف محمد کو عدالت میں پیش کرکے اس سے تفتیش کےلیے اس کا جسمانی ریمانڈ لےلیا ہے
لاہور سے نامہ نگار عبادالحق کا کہنا ہے کہ پولیس کے ڈی آئی جی اور ترحمان پنجاب پولیس نعیم اکرم نے پریس کانفرنس میں بتایا کہ ابتدائی تحقیقات میں یہ معلوم ہوا ہے کہ جمعہ کو احمدیوں کی عبادت گاہوں پر حملہ کرنےوالوں کی تعداد چار تھی اور ان میں سے گڑھی شاہو میں عبادت گاہ پر حملہ کرنے والے دونوں حملہ آور پولیس مقابلے میں ہلاک ہوگئے۔ ان کے نام منصور اور درویش ہیں۔
پولیس کے مطابق ماڈل ٹاون میں جو حملہ ہوا اس میں دونوں حملہ آوروں کو حراست میں لے لیا گیا اور ان میں معاذ نامی حملہ آور شدید زخمی ہے جبکہ عبداللہ عرف محمد کو زندہ پکڑا گیا ہے۔
نعیم اکرم نے بتایا کہ چاروں اکیس مئی کو بنوں کے راستے میران شاہ سے لاہور پہنچے اور لاہور میں بتی چوک اترے اور قریب ہی واقع مسجد سبز شیڈ والے میں اکھٹے ہوئے۔ پولیس ترجمان کے مطابق چاروں حملہ آوروں نے اکیس مئی کو لاہور میں ماڈل ٹاؤن اور گڑھی شاہوں میں اپنے اپنے ساتھیوں کے ساتھ دونوں عبادت گاہوں کا جائزہ لیا جس کے بعد چاروں حملہ آور رائے وانڈ مرکز میں چلےگئے اور وہاں بقول پولیس، جھوٹ بول کر مختلف جگہوں پر چھپتے رہے۔
پولیس کا کہنا ہے کہ عبداللہ عرف محمد نے ماڈل ٹاؤن اور معاذ اور درویشن نےگڑھی شاہو میں احمدیوں کی عبادت گاہوں پر حملہ کیے ۔پولیس کے بقول تحقیقات میں معلوم ہوا کہ اٹھائیس مئی کو یہ چار حملہ آور لاہور میں بتی چوک پر اکٹھے ہوئے جہاں سے ان کا عبداللہ عرف محمد اور معاذ کو موٹر سائیکل پر ماڈل ٹاؤن لےگیا جبکہ دوریش اور منصور دوسرے ساتھی کے ساتھ گڑھی شاہو میں حملہ کے لیے چلےگئے۔
ترجمان پنجاب پولیس نے بتایا عبداللہ عرف محمد کی عمر سترہ برس ہے اور اس کا تعلق رحیم یار خان کے خانپور کٹورہ سے ہے اور اب اس کے گھر والے کوئٹہ ٹاؤن کراچی میں رہتے ہیں جبکہ عبداللہ کا چھوٹا بھائی بدر بھی طالبان کے لیے کام کرتا ہے۔ پولیس کا یہ بھی کہنا ہے کہ عبداللہ عرف محمد کو منیب نامی شدت پسند نے میران میں ترتیب دی ہے۔
ڈی آئی جی نعیم اکرم نے دعویْ کیا کہ انہیں حملہ آور سے تحقیقات میں مفید معلومات ملی ہیں جس سےتحقیقات میں پیش رفت ہوگی۔ ڈی آئی جی کے بقول جمعہ کو ہونے والے حملوں میں دس پولیس اہلکار زخمی ہوئے ہیں جن میں نوگڑھی شاہو میں جبکہ ایک پولیس انسپکٹر ماڈل ٹاوں میں زخمی ہوا۔ انہوں نے بتایا گڑھی شاہو میں زخمی ہونے والوں میں ایس پی اور اے ایس پی کے عہدے کے دو افسر بھی شامل تھے۔
پولیس نے سنیچر کے روز عبداللہ عرف محمد کو کڑے حفاظتی انتظامات میں انسداد دہشت گردی کی خصوصی عدالت میں پیش کیا اور ملزم سے تفتیش کے لیے اس کا تیس دنوں کا ریمانڈ دینے کی استدعا کی ۔ عدالت نے ملزم کا بیس دنوں کا ریمانڈ دیتے ہوئے پولیس کو ہدایت کی کہ ملزم کو دوبارہ اٹھارہ جون کو عدالت میں پیش کیا جائے۔

Brutal assault on the Ahmedis
May 28th, 2010, will be etched in history as ‘Black Friday’ for Pakistan. On the day that the country was celebrating ‘Yaum-e-Takbeer’ to commemorate the 12th anniversary of Pakistan going nuclear, Lahore witnessed two deadly terror attacks against the Ahmediyya community. Terrorists carried out simultaneous attacks on the Ahmedis’ places of worship — Baitul Noor in Model Town and Darul Zikr in Garhi Shahu — during Friday prayers when thousands of Ahmedis had gathered there. It was surreal to see the images unfolding on our television screens when the terrorists went inside the two houses of prayer and unleashed their terror on the innocent worshippers. More than 90 people died while more than a hundred others were injured. The Punjab wing of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Wielding guns, wearing suicide vests and with hand grenades at their disposal, the terrorists launched well coordinated attacks subsequently leading to a standoff for hours at Garhi Shahu while the Model Town assault was relatively brief. The effort of the security volunteers of the Ahmediyya community during the operations must be lauded.
The dead were buried separately on Saturday after the Ahmediyya community cancelled a mass funeral because they were not “satisfied with the security arrangements”. This is the height of injustice since the Ahmedis are the most persecuted community in Pakistan but every government, past or present, has failed to provide adequate security to them. In an act of supreme opportunism under pressure from the religious extremists, the Ahmedis were declared non-Muslims by Zulfikar Bhutto in 1974. This opened the door for religious zealots to wreak further havoc when it came to the Ahmedis. General Ziaul Haq, a bigot, persecuted the Ahmedi sect by promulgating discriminatory laws specific to this community. Since then we have seen a constant rise in intolerance towards the Ahmedis. Instead of giving protection to our minorities as per the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we have castigated them.
Another worrying aspect of Friday’s brutal massacre was that apparently the Punjab government had been forewarned of possible terrorist attacks against the minorities. Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that two security alerts were sent to the provincial government on May 13 and May 26 warning them of such an attack. It is shocking to know that instead of doing anything about it, the Punjab government adopted a ‘devil may care’ attitude. We are already in a life and death struggle with terrorism, thus the Punjab government’s apathetic treatment of an intelligence report of such sensitivity is nothing short of criminal negligence. On top of that we have seen the provincial government’s top minister hobnobbing with the leaders of banned terrorist groups, case in point being Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah mollycoddling a Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) leader in Jhang for electoral purposes. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif begging mercy from the Taliban to spare Punjab is another grim reminder that our leaders are playing a very dangerous game. It seems the PML-N is playing the role of a fifth column in this war against terrorism. Instead of owning up to the fact that there are terrorists in Punjab, the provincial government has shifted the blame to an obscure ‘foreign hand’. The government should not try to fool the public with red herrings. The people of this country want answers and not flimsy excuses. The Friday attacks were not just an assault on the Ahmedis but an assault on every citizen of Pakistan.

It is difficult to find words to express my sadness, anger, and horror over the mayhem in Lahore which resulted in the deaths of scores of innocent Pakistanis and human beings. The bigoted barbarians – nurtured, fed, trained, and financed for years by the security establishment – are destroying the society and the response of the powers that be – in this case – Army and the Punjab government – seems to be no more than the usual; “we will investigate and punish the culprits.” We as a Nation have not just lost it but are unable to comprehend why this is happening? It is not just extremists.
Where are Imran Khans and Munawar Hassans of the world who can condemn anyone and everyone except the military establishment and the terrorists? Let me make it abundantly clear that while I am a liberal, I have no illusions about the long term repercussions of US military involvement in the affairs of any country given the history of Latin America, South-East Asia, and the Middle East. But what killings of innocent citizens of Pakistan have to do with the resistance to the Americans. If any of these militants (by the way, they should be called terrorists. period.) want to drive out American troops from Afghanistan, they should fight the US troops. Why are the killing Pakistani men, women, and children? What kind of convoluted logic is this?
To get drawn into a discussion about Ahmedis would be to play the game of the perpetrators of this massacre. They probably want us to get involved into a debate about the Ahmedis and minority rights and thus us create more confusion and division whereas the real and crux of the issue is the complete failure of the security establishment to protect the lives of its citizens. This mayhem highlights the failure of a security state that is imploding from within. It reflects the disastrous consequences of what happens when the defenders of the country outsource its defense to rag tag brigades of hired criminals and indoctrinated fanatics and when the security establishment compromises on national interests – specially the economic and energy security – because it needs money from Saudi Arabia and America and stretches its resources and capabilities to conduct stupid adventures like Cargill – because it thrives on conflicts to perpetuate its hold over the country’s polity.
Why Hafiz Saeed has been let go when his top aides were clearly involved in Mumbai attacks? Where is Qari Saifullah Akhtar? Why he was let go in 2008? How Mullah Radio was able to escape? Why was Abdullah Mehsud allowed to build his forces after his return from Guantanamo bay in 2004?
Why is it so that the Supreme Court can appoint a person of its own choice to investigate the Bank of Punjab loans case but does not have the time to take suo moto notices of the killings of hundreds of innocent Pakistanis? Because the life is cheap in Pakistan? Or the pursuit of millions of rupees is more important than human lives and the security of the citizens?
The fight against militants would take more than stereotype condemnation of extremism and militancy. The people would have to confront the establishment of this country including the Generals and the Chief Justices and demand that they do their primary job and fulfill the most basic function of the government. Establish law and order and protect the lives of ordinary citizens.

You are absolutely mistaken. The real issue is about the Ahmadiyya issue and minority rights – the hatred machine started in 1953 against Ahmadiyya sect and now rules the country. The first step would be to abolish the second amendment and let not the state decide the religion of its citizens.
Thank you for a very informative writeup. yet in my experience things are slighly more complicated than you make them seem. time will tell, but the problem is I do not have enough time. anyway, it is good to know we are not alone in the struggle. but you might want to reconsider some fragments in your post. after all, if it can do all that, why do we even need the rest anylonger? just a bit.
