6 Shia professionals target killed in Karachi and Quetta by Deobandi ASWJ militants

Six Shia Muslims were killed in Karachi and Quetta on Wednesday 25 January 2012 in the latest incidents of target killing of Shia Muslims in Pakistan. The six Shia professionals killed today included: 3 lawyers (in Karachi), 1 TV artist, 1 poet and accountant, 1 FIA officer (in Quetta). Genocide continues!
According to the World Shia Forum and Shaheed Foundation, more than 700 Shia Muslims were target killed in 2011 by Pakistan army backed Jihadi-sectarian organizations (e.g., Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat ASWJ (also known as Sipah-e-Sahaba or Lashkar-e-Jhangvi etc). Pakistan army is currently supporting terrorist anti-Shia organization Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan under the banner of the so called Difa-e-Pakistan (Defence of Pakistan) rallies and conferences. Sipah-e-Sahaba (a radial Doebandi organization) and Jamaat-ud-Dawa (a radical Wahhabi organization) are two main parties in the Difa-e-Pakistan Conference. The Difa-e-Pakistan Council is also supported by Imran Khan’s political party PTI; Khan sent a special message to the Difa-e-Pakistan Conference in December 2011 in Lahore.
In the first 26 days of 2012, at least 40 Shia Muslims have been target killed, which averages out to one to two Shia target killing per day across Pakistan. In the most deadly attack this year, at least 27 Shia Muslims were killed in Khanpur (Punjab) on 14 January 2012 during a mourning procession for Imam Hussain (Chehlum).
In the latest incidents today, 3 Shia lawyers were killed in Karachi when Jihadi-sectarian militants opened fire on their car near then Aram Bagh area of Karachi.
In Quetta, another three Shiite Muslims were killed at Makengi Road, including FIA Police Inspector Wilayat Hussain, a TV artist Abid Ali Nazish and Muhammad Anwar.
KARACHI: Advocate Kafil Jaffery, his father Baidar Jaffery and brother Shakeel Jafery were killed when four gunmen, riding two motorcycles, opened fire on Lawyers’ car when they were going back home from the City Court Karachi. A fourth lawyers is in critical condition and is undergoing surgery at the Civil Hospital.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has announced a nation wide boycott of courts on Thursday.
Eyewitness accounts state that the police failed to act and only opened aerial firing after the attack had already taken place. The police were also late in cordoning off the crime scene. Pakistan’s police is usually under instructions from Pakistan army / ISI to refrain from intervening when ISI’s assets (proxies) are conducting their operations against Shias, Ahmadis, Christians, Barelvis etc.
QUETTA: Police said the three victims were travelling in a car on Ibrahim Street on Mekangi Raod when the attackers, riding a motorcycle, opened fire at them, killing them on the spot. The assailants managed to escape from the scene. The bodies were taken to Provincial Sandeman Hospital for an autopsy where they were identified as FIA Inspector Vilayat Hussain, actor Abid Nazish and Mohammad Anwar, an employee of the accountant-general of Balochistan’s office.
The target killing of Shia Muslims is ongoing while the political government has completely failed to arrest the terrorists and their patrons. Pakistan’s Supreme Court remains sympathetic towards terrorists, and routinely releases Jihadi-sectarian militants thus enabling further Shia genocide. In the recent past, Supreme Court has released Malik Ishaq of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Hafiz Saeed of the Lashkar-e-Taiba. Both of them are currently active in the ISI-backed Difa-e-Pakistan rallies.Media and human rights organizations silence:
Pakistani media, both English and Urdu language media, and both right wing and so called liberal journalists continue to either ignore or misrepresent the news of Shia killings. For example, Express Tribune, which is usually presented as a liberal progressive voice in Pakistan by urban elites, refused to identify the motive and identity of the three professionals killed in Quetta, and wrote this line: “The motive behind the murders could not be known immediately.”
On Twitter, where only two days ago, hundreds of bloggers and activists, who were busy in condemning TV anchor Maya Khan’s violation of liberal space and progressive norms, kept complete mum on the genocide of Shias. No activism, petition or pressure on Pakistani media, government or army was evident in order to highlight, condemn and stop the ongoing Shia genocide.
However, Baloch, Pashtun and Ahmadi activists were most vocal on Twitter against the ongoing Shia genocide; they also criticised Pakistani media’s and urban elites’ hypocrisy and silence on Shia killings.
In the meanwhile, the Wolrd Shia Forum has appealed to all Shia scholars and youths to refrain from participating in any political or religious meeting in which there is likelihood of hate speech against other sects or religions including Ahmadi Muslims, Christians, Jews etc.
It is high time that Pakistan’s oppressed communities including Shia Muslims, Ahmadi Muslims, Christians, Balochs, Pashtuns and others unite and support each other against the ongoing persecution and target killing by Jihadi-sectarian assets of the Deep State.

I am not a Shia but I wonder why don’t Shia Muslims apply for licensed weapons, spend money on their training in self defence and use of arms.
If someone attacks them or stops their car, why don’t they return the fire? Why do they die so helplessly? Kill the killers before they kill you. I am sure there is legal provision to protect you!

Kullo Yomin Ashura, Kulla Arzin Karb-o-Bala
The lawyers, identified as Badar Munir, 45, his 25-year-old son Gohar Shakil Jaffery, Kafil Jaffery, 28, and Babar Ali, 45, were returning home in a car (R-7162) after attending court proceedings, when four unidentified assailants riding on two motorcycles intercepted their vehicle at Din Muhammad Wafai Road and sprayed the car with bullets, killing three of the lawyers on the spot while Ali was injured.
The bodies of the deceased and the injured lawyer were shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi. The situation in Jaffar Tayyar Society in Malir also became tense as unidentified miscreants set ablaze tyres and closed the roads for vehicular traffic. Aerial firing was reported in Abbas Town, Buffer Zone, Gurumandir and Kala Board and an Edhi ambulance was set ablaze at Malir 15.
A strong reaction was also reported from other Shia-dominated areas of Ancholi, Abul Hassan Isphahani Road and Rizvia Society in Nazimabad, where a large number of residents came out of their houses and blocked the roads in protest of the killings of lawyers.
Today, Shaheryar Mirza (Mirza9) a pro-MQM and pro-Sipha-e-Sahaba journalist was spitting his bias against Shia Muslims on Twitter by equating Shia genocide with Sunni genocide:

KARACHI: Three lawyers were shot dead and a fourth was wounded here on Wednesday in what appeared to be a targeted sectarian attack. Gunmen sprayed the lawyers’ car with bullets on Maulana Din Mohammad Wafai Road near Pakistan Chowk when they were going home from City Courts. One of the deceased was a senior lawyer and the others his son and nephew. Four men on two motorcycles carried out the attack at around 3:06 pm, according to SDPO Preedy Subdivision ASP Ali Asif. They intercepted the car and two pillion-riders got down and opened fire. Although the lawyer who was driving the car suffered bullet wounds, he drove the vehicle to Civil Hospital, SSP South Naeem Ahmed Shaikh said. “They fired five to six shots, we have found four spent bullet casings of a 9mm pistol and one casing of a 30-bore pistol,” he said. The windscreen of the car was smashed. The assailants managed to flee despite the presence of a police van outside the nearby office of a daily newspaper. Three policemen, who were in the van but did not act to arrest or kill the assailants, were detained by police on the orders of the SSP South pending a departmental inquiry. The policemen were part of the security escort of the editor of the newspaper. Badar Munir Jafri, 65, his son Gohar Shakil Jafri, 34, and nephew Kafil Ahmed Jafri were pronounced dead at the hospital, while the injured, Babar Ali Jafri, was taken to the operation theatre and after surgery shifted to the Surgical ICU. Kafil Ahmed Jafri was to get married on 17 Rabiul Awwal. According to police and some lawyers, the four advocates were members of the legal aid committee of the Shia Lawyers Forum, but at present they were not handling any high-profile case. The bodies were shifted to Husaini Jamia Masjid in Malir, Saudabad. The incident sparked protests in the localities of Malir, Saudabad and Jafar Tayyar Society. Protesters started firing in the air and forced businesses to close. Reports of tension were also received from other areas, including Rizvia Society, Abbas Town and Ancholi in Federal B. Area. A portion of the National Highway was closed to traffic after enraged people erected barricades and burned tyres. An Edhi ambulance was set on fire in Malir. The Shia Ulema Council has announced three days of mourning. The funeral prayers will be offered at Sharea Faisal (National Highway) after Zohr prayers on Thursday. On the call of the Karachi Bar Association, legal fraternity will observe a complete boycott of courts on Thursday. KBA President Mahmoodul Hasan condemned the murders and said the lawyers would stay away from courts and hold a condolence reference. He called upon the government to take immediate steps to stop the killing of lawyers. Sindh Bar Council’s Vice Chairman Iftikhar Javed Qazi also condemned the killings and said the SBC had endorsed the call given by the Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association for a countrywide strike. On Jan 11, Advocate Maqboolur Rehman was killed on New M.A. Jinnah Road in the Jamshed Quarters area. Last year, 20 lawyers were killed in Sindh, 15 of them in Karachi, according to the Karachi Bar Council.

Shias are themselves stupid and deviants. If Shias are truly concerned about it then they must wage an open war against Deobandis/Wahabbis, not Sunnis. Instead of speaking bad about Ghazi Mumtaz Qadri that killed a wastrel, faithless governor, they should raise their voice against Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat(formerly a banned terror outfit), they are not the real Jamaat-e-Ahl-e-Sunnah. Learn the difference and be against Wahabbi/Deobandi Taliban-minded terror groups operating in the country and sad to say with the help of ISI.

Widespread malaise
The gruesome murder of three lawyers in Karachi is yet another reminder of the worsening situation of law and order in the country. Though it is never useful to jump to conclusions immediately, the fact that the three belonged to the Shia sect makes it easy to place the motive of the incident in the larger context of sectarian killings in the country. All across the country, the Shia community has been targeted, be they from the Hazara community in Balochistan, the Turi tribe in the tribal areas or simply, prominent professionals in central and southern Punjab.
The legal fraternity staged a protest across the country in solidarity with their fallen brethren. The courts were boycotted in many towns in the country, from Sindh to KP. At a time when the legal community has come under much criticism regarding their conservative religio-political orientation, it is heartening to note that there are some good things, at least, that have emerged from the rather charged profession-wide activism that the legal fraternity has been given to in the aftermath of the lawyers’ movement.
Whereas the inadequate response of the deep state to the tumult in the north-west can be attributed, to a large extent, on its particular security paradigm regarding Afghanistan, the policy towards sectarian groups in the rest of the country cannot be placed squarely on the policy of strategic depth. Here, it is also a result of the twofold scourges of a state with a limited capacity to respond to challenges and the immense, immense clout that these outfits enjoy in vast swathes of the Punjab. Their rather large presence in urban Sindh has also been the source of much discontent.
Also cognisant should we be of the various fault lines that cut across Karachi and, indeed, the whole country as well. Killings are attributed according to the lens the analyst wears. Several months ago, a killing like this could be attributed to ethno-linguistic rifts. Even killings emanating from personal, professional and trade rivalries have been known, in the past, to have been brushed up under the carpet of the background of hate crimes. A number of innocent religious minority members, for instance, have been implicated in blasphemy cases because of the property they owned or the thriving professional practice they ran.
The increasing inability of the state to keep its monopoly on the use of violence is the backdrop of our national descent into chaos.

Acts of terror

Hundreds of Shias died in targeted attacks across the country last year and most tragically, this year seems to be no different. The deadly process continues. Three Shia lawyers were gunned down in Karachi on January 26. On the same day, three other professionals — including an FIA official, an accountant and a poet — all from the Shia community, were killed in Quetta. Extremist groups are believed to be responsible and may well be deliberately targeting Shia professionals as means to spread terror amongst the community. The tactic has worked, with hundreds of professionals — notably doctors — who have fled the country after being targeted in this manner. This is a loss that is hard to sustain in a nation where professionals are badly needed. To add to the targeted shooting, there have been attacks on Shia processions such as the one taken out earlier this month in the town of Khanpur in Rahimyar Khan district, where Shias were mourning the 40th day of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain.
We all know who is behind the attacks; the rise of sectarian organisations in the Punjab in the late 1980s and 1990s is well-documented. Through the years these groups have split up, and re-grouped under different names again and again. The question is: why can’t more be done to go after them, both in their base in the southern Punjab and in other centres where they have spread like a virus against which we have no antidote. We need to tackle the issue head on. The fact that we have waited so long only makes matters more difficult. On a short-term basis, our intelligence networks need to determine how these groups operate, where they are based and devise a strategy to marginalise them. The increasing hatred and intolerance in society needs to be tackled and we need to end the targeting of those from the Shia community which is destroying so many aspects of life in our society, effectively tearing it apart. In the short-term, this means hitting those involved in such sectarian attacks with an iron fist. As for the longer term, this will have to involve a comprehensive overhaul of the national curriculum and regulation/monitoring of madrassas.

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has made a civil judge an OSD (officer on special duty) for being on hit-list of militant groups, Dawn learnt on Monday.
Ali Ashtar Naqvi Syed has been posted at Ferozewala since 2012 as civil judge-cum-judicial magistrate.
Sources said eight members of various banned outfits arrested by police in May last revealed to their interrogators that Mr Syed was on the list of their potential targets, besides many others, including some judges, lawyers and journalists.
Many lawyers, judges and other professionals, especially those belonging to Shia sect have been killed, harassed and terrorised by militant groups in past. In a recent happening, Justice Ali Baqar Najafi of the LHC also received a threatening letter from a banned outfit when he was holding a judicial inquiry into June 17 Model Town killings.
Sources in the LHC revealed that Mr Syed had been receiving life threats for the last one year after he ordered sealing of a mosque owing to a dispute over its possession between two rival sects – “deobandi” and “barevli”.
They said the civil judge, on the advice of law enforcement agencies, went underground to avoid any possible attack and obtained one-month leave from the high court. Acting Chief Justice Manzoor Ahmad Malik also posted Mr Syed as an OSD on his representation.
