We condemn closure of Matiullah Jan’s Apna Gareban. Why no accountability of journalists?

TV Anchors and journalists of Pakistan’s media corporate industry always give lectures on “accountability” and ethics, moreover, miss no opportunity to malign civilian elected representatives of pakistani people. Talk shows and their howling and yelling anchors talk about accountability for government officials, politicians and especially about head of the state, but when question comes of eliminating black sheeps from the media industry, they usually turn their back and run away.
Some couragous voice for self accountability from Journalist’s community did come about few months ago, when Matiullah Jan of Dawn News has started program called “Apna Gareban” the program was mainly exposing corruption of journalists. But corrupt media mafia ganged up against him and now this show has been shut down.

How difficult is peek into our own collar who can tell you better than Mattiullah Jan, these are the comments of Matiullah Jan, the host of Apna Gareban on Dawn News. While talking to Asif Farooqi, the correspondent of BBC Urdu, he said “He had started a program with the name of “Apna Gareban” which is about to exposed the black sheep those are practicing yellow journalism in Pakistan, through his program he tried his best to introduce accountability culture into the journalism community but as expected the program could not completed its first season and closed by the channel management suddenly as the result of community pressure.
While interview Mattiullah revealed: “Initially, it was decided by Dawn News that “Apna Gareban” in first season may consist of 13 episodes but unfortunately the management closed my program just after 10 on-aired episodes.
When the reporter approached to Dawn news editor Mubashir Zaidi, he replied the program will continue after while and Matiullah will surely continue his job with the same channel, he admits that there is a certain pressure on us but they will not going to give up and will continue this trend through our TV and publications. (Jawad)
How come people are quiet when it comes to the closure of the Apna Gareban programme?
I am not hearing a peep out of our esteemed journalists? Must be a touchy subject it seems! (Yousaf)
Apna Garbaan show was closed because of reporter Irfan Raza who is brother of same Shahzad Raza, having CDA beat in Dawn newspaper and Matiullah Jan was showing how CDA allotted KHOKHA (shops) to some blue-eyed yellow journalists.
The clarification by Editor of Dawn TV and extreme anger shown by his sect people on his direction have proven that they believe in cronyism and can go to any length to deceive the people. What’s the credibility of Dawn if its Editor publicly disgraces his TV Channel by saying “we believe every one has the right to explore options as we are not running slave organizations where one has to work for life.” Amber Saigol and Haroon should take notice for such non-responsible statements being issued from the office of Editor Dawn.
If Shahzad is such a good journalist as claimed by Mubashir Zaidi, why he is not working with Dawn TV even after coming back from the US? Why Shahzad has to explore other options if he was not involved in corruption in Dawn TV? How editor knows Shahzad got his Vitz purchased much before the interview? Editor Dawn News just wants to give a cover to misdeed of so called senior journalists by not writing what is truth?
The bitter truth is the dawn management has concrete evidences and thus fired Shahzad. If Editor Dawn News and his supporters have even a bit of morality they should prefer to resign from “low-standard” Dawn TV channel and join Shahzad to start exploring more options together. (Shahbaz)
I will repeat time and again that corruption in Pakistan media is not a issue which has just come up. It has a long history. They were underpaid and the owners of the news establishments encouraged them to collect the booties from outside to compensate their poor wages.
Now in recent years when there is a mushroom growth of private television channels which has recruited the people with no academic and professional background has provided a field day to all those to loot and plunder left and right.
Tell me how is it possible for Kamran Khan of GEO to drive BMW and built a house in Karachi on 2000 square yards.Similarly Azhar Abbas of Geo who was living in shabby apartment till few years in Gulshan Eqbal of Karachi has built a modern bungalow in DHA Karachi and driving SUV with a fleet of guards around him.. Azhar and his other fellow are those who were colleagues who were so called leftist in recent past. Same is the story of many who have proved the idiom of ” rags to riches”.
Journalism had never been a profession of comforts and luxuries of life. The overnight affluence, prosperity and comfortable living to many jourbnalist is not through hard earned money but behind all this there is a massive corruption.
My request is please do not play with my patience as I know all the skeltons which are concealed in every television channels. For Heaven sake Mr Mubashir Zaidi, Matiullah Jan, Irfan Raza and Mateen Haider and Arshad Sharif to carry on your mission without making any bones about the universal idealism of honesty and integrity. That is not your cup of tea. (Alamgir)
. I am still interested in listening something from Mubashir Zaidi. Matin Haider and Matiullah Jan in defense of their colleague who was equally corrupt like his defenders.
My sources have also revealed some inside stories about the gang of Arshad Sharif and Matiualh Jan along with Shehzad Raza as how he managed the training program for the US on which his Editor DAWN is glorifying him.
I know there is no point in exposing the corrupt journalist as they enjoy majority and those speaking truth are in minority. My only request is that if you are corrupt please go ahead but please do not put a mask of honesty, self pride, integrity and similar other words which many DAWN TV staffers had used for their corrupt colleague. (Alamgir)
The facts remains there is a group of newly born television journalist in the country are involved in rampant corruption. Shehzad Raza is no exception. Some senior journalist both in Islamabad, Karachi and also in Lahore will bear me out about the rampant corruption among the television reporters. The prime reason of this massive scale of corruption is very simple. These newly born television reporters have landed in a profession which provide them too much exposure and also opportunity to mingle around with important people and decision makers while their professional knowledge is almost zero.
Television channels and their owners are just giving a blind eye mainly because they know it is not hurting them.Stories of Matiulah Jan, Mateen Haider, Mubashir Zaidi are available in the market.Ask about Mateen Haider, Matiulah Jan and many of those who have worked in PTV before the boom of private channels as what was their performance and what is their track record of honesty and professional integrity.
I know many people in newspaper industry and also in television channels who can come out and give first hand evidence about the corrupt practices of Shehzad, Mateen, Mati and Zaidi. To keep the record straight I must place on record that there are many anchors including of DAWN TV who were on the pay rolls of some important diplomatic missions. Ask the famous Talat Husain that why he left AAJ TV and blackmailed owners of that channel.
My request is very simple that please do not give passport of honesty and integrity to all the tv reports. No amount of explanation on the part of Mubashir Zaidi will change the realities. (Alamgir)

How one TV reporter tried to reveal the underbelly of the Pakistani media
May 26, 2011 — koolblue

The Ombudsman

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—Last November, 30 of Pakistan’s most influential journalists boarded a plane bound for Saudi Arabia. The occasion was the hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims are expected to perform at least once in their lifetimes, if they can afford it. On this trip, however, money wasn’t a problem: The Pakistani government picked up the tab.
For months, the story of the government-sponsored hajj went unreported. The fact that reporters were accepting gifts from the government hardly qualified as news. Plus, reporters in Pakistan have an unspoken rule, a kind of omerta: You don’t write about other reporters.
Unless you’re Matiullah Jan. Jan, an anchor for Dawn News in Islamabad, launched a new show in January called Apna Gareban—the name means “under our collar,” an Urdu idiom that translates as “our own underbelly”—in which Jan investigates the conduct of his fellow journalists. On the show, he acts as a kind of one-man ombudsman for all of Pakistan, badgering reporters, ambushing them Bill O’Reilly-style, and guilt-tripping them on air for their alleged misdeeds—behavior unheard of in the Pakistani media. “This is a very revolutionary thing,” says Mehmal Sarfraz, op-ed editor at the Daily Times in Lahore. “Somebody had to do it.”
In February, Jan aired an hour long report outing the journalists who visited Mecca on the government’s dime. Many of the reporters defended themselves. One said God had called him to Mecca, and he had to obey, despite having gone on hajj twice before. “God called you three times?” Jan asked, incredulous. Others said they didn’t know where the funds had come from, and they never bothered to ask. Pakistan’s supreme court soon ordered the reporters to pay back the money, though some have appealed the decision.
The issue wasn’t necessarily that journalists had taken a trip that was paid for by the government; journalists, Pakistani and otherwise, do that all the time. (This article, in fact, was made possible by the East-West Center, which organized a trip to Pakistan funded by the U.S. State Department.) The trip to Mecca wasn’t a reporting trip—some journalists even brought their families—nor was it acknowledged publicly until Jan brought the issue to light.
The growth of the Pakistani media over the last decade has exacerbated journalistic corruption. Newspapers flourished in the 1980s and ’90s, but there was only one cable TV channel, the state-run Pakistani Television. That changed in 2003, when Gen. Pervez Musharraf, frustrated that Pakistanis were getting much of their news from India, relaxed the ban on cable channels, or “electronic media.” The medium boomed, as Pakistan went from one cable TV station to dozens in 2011.
As the sector has grown, so has its power. “The media is more unrestrained now than ever,” says Najam Sethi, a columnist and the editor of the Friday Times in Lahore. “We can get away with murder.” Sensationalism abounds, fact-checking is a foreign concept for many outlets, and TV reporters who have rushed in to fill the media vacuum often have no journalistic background. The agency that regulates cable channels, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, prohibits content that is “defamatory or knowingly false,” but it rarely takes action.
Many Pakistani journalists accept gifts from politicians, presumably in exchange for favorable coverage. Less blatant forms of corruption—caving to threats from militant groups after a suicide attack by replacing the word “died” with “was martyred,” for example—are common. In the most egregious cases, “reporters” aren’t reporters at all but simply businessmen with press cards who use their access to the press to help friends, punish enemies, and blackmail law enforcement. If you’re pulled over by a traffic cop and you have a press card, says Jan, you don’t have to pay.
Yet the media rarely critiques itself. Only one Pakistani newspaper, the Express Tribune, has hired an ombudsman, and his mandate is limited to that paper. He doesn’t write a column, either—he just handles reader complaints in-house. Media “navel-gazing” may have a bad name in the United States, but the Pakistani media’s belly could use some inspection.
That was Jan’s thinking when he created Apna Gareban. The purpose was to turn the same critical eye on journalists that they turn on politicians. Jan has worked for several years as a court reporter for Dawn News in Islamabad. “In court, we talk about right and wrong, black and white, accountability, justice, equality of treatment before the law,” he says. But those terms are almost never used in conversations about the press. “All of the sickness of society is being scrutinized by the media, but the media is not being held accountable itself.” Apna Gareban became the first major TV program to dig into the backgrounds of influential journalists, essentially making Jan the ombudsman for all of Pakistan.
In the first episode, Jan visits the federal government’s Press Information Department, where publishers—and often reporters themselves—go to solicit government ads. (A big chunk of the ads that appear in Pakistani newspapers and on TV are paid for by the government, usually to promote new projects or to congratulate officials for their achievements.) There, he interrogates a reporter who’s asking for ads. “If they don’t give you ads, do you publish stories against them?” says Jan. “Well, they do give us ads,” says the reporter, “so why should we say anything against them?”
The transactional relationship between the government and the press is a recurring theme. In one episode, Jan examines the 290 million rupee ($3.4 million) “secret fund” set aside by the Information Ministry for journalists. The fund covers everything from buying ads in newspapers to providing medical care for reporters to paying for their daughters’ weddings. All this is to the good, former Information Secretary Ashfaq Gondal tells Jan: “There is no one to look out for the welfare of these journalists.” Jan plays along. “These are great deeds,” he says. “So why would you keep this a secret?” Gondal responds that the purpose of the information ministry is “to establish a sort of goodwill within the populace so that the populace tilts toward progress and keeps up with the times.” What better way to “establish goodwill” than to buy off the press?
Another episode focuses on the awarding of lavish government housing to top-tier Pakistani journalists at cheap rates. Jan kicks off the program by reading the names of the 24 journalists, displaying their pictures, and describing their homes and how much they pay in rent. When confronted, one reporter insists it’s his “right” to get preferential treatment. Another compares his situation to that of a BBC reporter, whose salary is subsidized by the government. “Do BBC’s journalists get premium apartments from their rulers?” asks Jan. “I don’t have that information,” says the reporter. “Forget information,” says Jan, “they don’t get any, you know this.”
Jan’s interview technique, a one-two combo of logic and shame, drives his subjects into contortions. At first, the well-known anchor Asma Shirazi defends her decision to go on the government-funded hajj by saying she was misled about its funding. Then she says that even if she knew it was publicly funded, she would have gone anyway. Then she accuses Jan of failing to go after the “real big criminals,” like journalists who take land as bribes. Finally she agrees to pay back the money.
Jan is more than happy to play populist demagogue, despite being the son of a retired Army colonel and living in a relatively comfortable neighborhood of Islamabad. “The taxpayers are hungry for food and thirsting for water,” he tells Shirazi, “scrounging for every cent they can get, and instead you spent hundreds of thousands of rupees to go on a free ride to the pilgrimage.”
His crusade hasn’t exactly endeared him to his colleagues. “Watching fellow journalists squirm” is “painful,” writes Steve Manuel, who worked at Pakistani newspapers for 25 years and founded the website Journalism Pakistan. “There are other ways to expose such people … tattling on fellow journalists is not one of them.” Manuel also argues that Jan could be more critical of his bosses. “Why not also highlight the corruption practiced and encouraged by big media houses including Dawn?”
Jan says he’s been careful to investigate his friends, too. And he’s paid a price. For one episode, Jan invited prominent columnist and longtime friend Rauf Klasra onto the show to explain why he lives in a high-end government residence. “I told him at the start of the show, we’re not friends in the studio—I’m a journalist and you’re a journalist,” says Jan. During the interview, Klasra turned the tables on Jan by producing documents that accused the CEO of Dawn Media Group, Hameed Haroon, of corruption. Jan invited Haroon onto the show on the spot, but he never came. Jan and Klasra’s friendship hasn’t recovered.
The most profound moments of Jan’s program are not his attacks on the media, but what they reveal about broader systemic problems in Pakistan. When Jan asks a judge why he doesn’t punish media organizations that fail to pay their journalists—not uncommon in Pakistan—the judge blames the system. “I really want to prosecute them,” the judge says, and salary issues fall squarely within his jurisdiction. But “there’s always a reason or a loophole that the defendant exploits to circumvent penalization.” Even when the judge orders someone to appear in court, they often don’t show up. “I tell the police to summon the person to court, and they come and tell me the person is unavailable. What am I to do?”
In April, Apna Gareban was shut down after 12 episodes. The final straw was an investigation into the conduct of a reporter at Dawn News, Jan’s employer, who was making money on the side by selling goods from a kiosk provided by the government—a clear conflict of interest. “We knew [Apna Gareban] was going to be an experiment,” says Jan, who has returned to reporting on the courts full time. “I’m reconciled to the fact that there were pressures on the organization from the highest levels of the media industry.” The journalists who’d been exposed were angry, and media owners were worried they’d be next. “They looked in the mirror and saw what they looked like,” says Jan. “Then they decided to break the mirrors instead of washing their own faces.”

Dear all,
I just came to know through multiple sources that today Dawn News TV has reportedly fired Matiullah Jan, host of Apna Gareban show. Sources within Dawn News further informed that Haroon Hameed, owner of Dawn News TV did not like his latest episode in which he let Rauf Klasra to put serious allegations against Haroon Hameed as owner of Dawn News TV and President of APNS.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVvn1lFrBVY
All those journalists who were exposed in his program are congratulating to each other on this big victory against Matiullah Jan. “No doubt, the credit goes to Rauf Klasra who availed the opportunity to create the problem for the man who was creating problems for whole media community.” A journalist expressed.
Anyone to confirm or share more details?

Social Responsibility Theory states that being a social institution Media must be self regulatory. Matiullah Jan’s was doing an excellent program in this connection. His much discussed last program regarding govt sponsored Haj by some renowned journalists was excellent. It opened a new debates in the journalistic circles.
if this news is credible, i condemn his dismissal from the Dawn News and also condemn such an attitude by an organisation which was originally founded by Founder of The Nation, Quaid i Azam Muhammad Jinnah

Dear All,
It is really a good news that Matiullah Jan is still there in Dawn News
but at the same time it is shocking that we all participated in the rumor
gossip. This is a forum of journalsits and its my humble request to all
participants that do confirm before throwing any information on this
platform. Plz dont try to make it a rumors hub instead of an information
rich and socialization forum of media persons. I think it we all must
confirm from more than one sources before pasting such a topic for
discussion. If somehow such an itme, which is yet to be confirmed, came on
this platform for certain resons, then it is the duty of the participant
journalsits of the concerned city to immegiately confirm or reject such an
information. In this way, I think, we can make this forum really a source of
credible information for all of us.
Waiting for your response/coomments very positively
Best Regards

Mr. Jaan must expose the Media Lords one by one and also expose the Drug Money being invested by the Drug Lords in the Media Industry. Soon the Media of Pakistan will become like Bollywood of India. M/s. ARY, Hashwani, Lakhani etc.
It is high time that Media workers must unite and demand their rightful share in the Industry…how? Talk to a Lawyer and chartered accountant plus Newsprint and ABC departments. Must understand the mathematics of net paid copies, how many actually printed, circulation billing, advertising rates, billing, recovery, write off , depreciations etc. Unfortunately our trade unionist are not aware about the secrets of the Media Industry. Must learn. Allow membership to all workers of the media industry i.e Circulation, Advertising, Accounts, Printing, Production etc. Do good thinking……Tariq Khan.

If this is true then I am feeling sorry for objective reporting in this country.
Like other institutions in the country, the journalists, who are supposed to be torch bearers of accountability, are not willing to hold themselves accountable.
I know Mati very well & believe that he can be fired but he will not compromise on principles.
Best wishes for Matiullah

What rubbish! You have no idea about what group you are talking about! He is employed by Dawn!
From what I know Mr Matiullah Jan is very much active. He is reporting and working on the next episode of his programme.

Hi, I just talked with a friend working in Dawn News. More rumors are speculating that Matiullah is not fired but he is moved to Reporting section, means he is fired or not but his show Apna Gareban will not be braodcasted any more on Dawn News. Lets see anyone can give authentic information. _Sahir

Exposing journalists’ wrongdoings
by Ghulam Haider | | |
When I contacted Khushnood Ali Khan, a so-called leading journalist, regarding benefiting of Evacuee Property Trust Board flat, he misbehaved and threatened me of dire consequences
During last years of his military rule, the then President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf allowed private television channels to operate and then started a mad race among ‘media tycoons’ and other ‘businessmen’ to launch television channels. This act of the Musharraf regime not only opened up job opportunities for journalists with hefty salaries but also provided the media tycoons and businessmen to whiten their black money and hide their black deeds.
All and sundry jumped into the fray and launched television channels, following the style of official PTV but with a little bit variety of open debate shows. In the television talk shows, anchors always took pride in exposing the wrongdoings of politicians, traders, sportsmen, etc. but hardly any soul searching.
Off late, Dawn News has taken the lead and started a programme captioned “Apna Gareban” focused on pinpointing wrongdoings by the privileged class of journalists and their masters. First of its kind in the media history of Pakistan, the programme is being hosted by Matiullah Jan, which has drawn mixed reaction from the journalists community across Pakistan.
Here are excerpts of the interview.
How did you conceive the idea of “Apna Gareban”?
Matiullah Jan: Around two years ago I came across an Australian TV journalist who was in Islamabad for an official assignment. He told me that he was hosting a television talk show aimed at exposing journalists and it was a marvelous success. I started working on the idea and the Dawn News Editor Mubashir Zaidi gave a go ahead.
Before launching the programme, some of my well-wishers advised me against this venture saying; “Dogs don’t eat dog’s meat”. But I was adamant on some soul searching.
The programme may be controversial for media persons but it is like any other programme. It was my dream to start this programme. When you have passion, desire and you want to do for the society then you can do something special.
How do you convince the privileged journalists to face the camera?
Matiullah Jan: I am of the view that like any other human being, journalists should be transparent in their daily life dealings. I pursue the journalists, who benefited from government or any other schemes, to come forward and talk about their conscious. Journalists response has been mixed; some collecting courage while others ‘shying away’.
Everybody knew the faults with journalists but never discussed openly. It is really difficult to convince them but we persuade them. Some of them were caught on camera requesting not to air their footage while they running and hiding from us. We stop them at public places as the journalists question other in the same manner. I realize that I am a bit tough with journalists during questioning but they should realize the pain when they treat others in a harsh manner. Journalists are the eyes and the ears of the society. In other words, if journalists take privileges and sell their pen/soul what and how they will contribute for the betterment of the society. The damage to the society would be monumental.
How does journalists’ community perceive you now?
Matiullah Jan: “Apna Gareban” has exposed a lot of people and untied several myths of friendship upon me. A lot of colleagues who befriended with me 20 years ago now see me as a persona non grata after the airing of programme about them. Majority of the journalists perceive me as an enemy of the community but in the same vein, there is no dearth of conscientious people who have backed me a lot. When you point out ills, you are isolated and same is happening to me.
Did you receive any threats from the journalists’ community?
Matiullah Jan: Yes! I have been receiving threats from journalists’ community through varied resources. But I am trying make journalists realize that we should have courage to listen to criticism. When we talk of politicians and other public office holders’ accountability, we should also present ourselves in the same manner. Our society is divided into haves and have-nots and we journalists can contribute a lot towards the betterment of the poor.
When I contacted Khushnood Ali Khan, a so-called leading journalist, regarding benefiting of Evacuee Property Trust Board flat, he misbehaved and threatened me of dire consequences.
What is your achievement through “Apna Gareban”?
Matiullah Jan: To me the crux of journalism is that if you are successful in making a powerful person realized his/her mistake then it is your big achievement. I am satisfied that so far I am successful in making journalists, who have benefited from governments, realized their mistakes. I think I am going into a rabbit hole and annoying owners and journalists while taking risks at the same time. But I am enjoying my work a lot. I am sure I won’t be able to get job in media industry if fired from Dawn News due to obvious reasons.
Do you think journalists are performing their duties?
Matiullah Jan: We never ascertain our duties. We never come to know what we need to do. It is tip of an iceberg. Journalists know their duties but sometimes they are reluctant or afraid or unable or don’t want to perform. Various factors like bribery/incentives/politics/religion, etc. all are hampering their job. Government and media owners bribe/blackmail each other and journalism and business have been mixed, which is also badly impacting the role of journalists. No accountability of journalists.
Do you think it is fair for journalists to take benefits like plot, accommodation, foreign visits, etc.?
Matiullah Jan: The plot policy should be reviewed for journalists, army, government and other segments of the society. But I am sure that such offers in any form have direct impact on the judgment of journalists and they can never do justice with their pens once they get any benefit from any quarter(s).
Do you think journalists follow ethics?
Matiullah Jan: To me journalistic ethics cannot be changed. Rules are not any justification and ethics are far more superior then laws. Law becomes an excuse for bad journaslists to misuse their authority. Moral standards should be so high for journalists.
How did you come to journalism?
Matiullah Jan: I have Army background. Joined Kakool Academy as a cadet in 1986 and underwent training there for three and a half years. Then left the academy and took admission in a college in Islamabad. Remained politically active and formed Students Union Association and led demonstrations against the administration.
My friend Sabih Shah in Customs Department requested his father, who was a producer in Radio Pakistan, for audition of news broadcaster for both of us. Sabih Shah was rejected while I was selected for news broadcasting. Then I took admission in Defence and Strategic Studies (DSS) at Quaid-e-Azam University in 1990-1991 and passed the examination with distinction. Later I was selected as a fellow at the DSS on a one year contract.
Then I joined The Frontier Post as a reporter in 1995 and later worked in NNI in 1997 and PTV in 1999. In PTV, I won the PTV National Award for Best News Reporter. I later joined the Internews as Media Law Advisor and formed media law clinics in FM radio stations across Pakistan and educated people about the media laws. There I also set up emergency FM radio stations in earthquake-hit areas in 2005 tragedy. We trained broadcasters about reporting in calamity-hit areas. Then I worked for Reuters in 2007-2008. Since 2008 I am working in Dawn News.
Ghulam Haider is Pakistani journalist and development practiotner. He has worked for ten years in Pakistan’s leading newspers (Daily The News and Daily The Nation). Currently he is associated with development sector.

Why Did Dawn News Stop Apna Gareban Show?
Posted on July 4, 2011 by alaiwah
Matiullah Jan’s program to expose the media, its hypocrisy and the corruption within the media was bound one time or the other to face bottle-neck and an eventual shut down. Matiullah must have been mentally prepared for it.
He exposed several journalists and must be feeling satisfied. One can only wish that he had been able to access the list of journalists paid through the Information Ministry Secret Fund.
Matiullah’s program was finally shut down at Dawn’s editor Zafar Abbas’ intervention when he remarked that `Dogs Do Not Eat Dog’s Meat.’
Mati had interviewed the News editor Malik and exposed his holding a lucrative contract at Lake View Park. He then exposed Irfan Raza of Dawn holding a contract in Islamabad’s Melody’s Food Market for a restaurant.
Mati asked both these journalists as to how were they able to get these attractive contracts; where did the money come from; and what these business dealings have to do with journalism?
He also inquired News’ Malik about his frequently meeting certain army functionaries. Mati said in the program that obviously these meetings had nothing to do with reporting because Malik never reported about them.
Both Irfan Raza and Malik were furious after the recordings and pleaded with Mati not to aire the program. When he refused, they contacted Dawn’s higher management which intervened and did not permit Dawn News and Mati to telecast this program.
The program was discontinued permanently and Mati was transferred to reporting.
All are happy now. Who are the losers? The people of Pakistan of course. But does anyone care?

Earlier on Connery today during a “tech Planet” alert, i was playing my NC, they were locked out of all tech plants. Controlled none, zero, zilch. TR had 4, VS had 3. I played NC till the last 20 mins or so trying to do what I could, then bailed, picked up my TR character, played 20 mins on the “winning” side and got the top xp for the alert when we took a 5th tech plant. The NC were so uncoordinated and aloof that they were completly shut out.
