Burying the hatchet: Imran calls up Altaf, agrees to work together
Source: Express Tribune
After years of political animosity, Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Altaf Hussain’s Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) appear to be coming closer as the two leaders held their first telephonic conversation and exchanged good will with each other.
In a rare move, Imran Khan called Altaf Hussain on Saturday and appreciated the ‘bold’ stance taken by the latter on national issues, separate but identical statements issued by media offices of both the parties said.
The two leaders agreed to bury their past differences and vowed to work together for the betterment of the country, the statements added.
PTI and MQM have been considered staunch rivals in the past, at times holding public rallies and resorting to personal attacks against each other’s leadership.
Recently, however, the two parties have come closer, mainly due to back-channel efforts by some common friends and political leaders in Pakistan, observers say.
The second-tier leadership of the two parties prepared the ground that culminated in direct interaction between their leaders.
During their conversation, both sides discussed common agenda points and vowed to work together to achieve their goals.
Altaf Hussain has recently started taking a tough stance in public, on issues like unabated US predator attacks inside Pakistani territory, release of CIA contractor Raymond Davis and Dr Aafia Siddiqui.
The same issues take centre-stage in Imran Khan, and several right-wing parties’, political agendas.
Published in The Express Tribune, March 20th, 2011.
And now, the MQM – for ages not a word about the Aafia case until the Imran Farooq murder. Two pieces of information inconclusively suggested the murder may have been an intra-party affair, the first being a report in The Guardian and the second a vague statement by Scotland Yard. This was followed by a flurry of activity by the MQM for Dr Aafia.
Quite possibly the motive, entirely circumstantial at this stage, is to put the party on an anti-western front, especially with regard to their system of justice. And should things turn ugly in London, the championing of Dr Aafia’s ‘cause’ will serve as the pretext for pursuit of a criminal case – in a western court of law – against the party. After holding a rally for Dr Aafia, Dr Fauzia wryly remarked that it would have been better had it been held years earlier.
To get Dr Aafia back and to help commute her sentence will only be done by a more rational approach. That, however is unlikely to happen given the ways of the Aafia mafia.

Drone attacks: Altaf demands blood money for victims
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Thursday condemned in strongest terms the drone attack in Data Khel area of North Waziristan and asked the US to also pay blood money for those who lost their lives in the assault.
Speaking at an event held in Karachi in connection with the party’s foundation day via telephone, Altaf expressed his sense of outrage at the way innocent people of South Waziristan were targeted.
The US must pay blood money for the victims, he demanded.
He said if the US so desires, “we are ready to pay diyat for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui”.
He said the MQM would issue its official stance on the matter of Raymond Davis’ release today.
He said the drone strikes are tantamount to attacking Pakistan’s independence and sovereignty which could adversely affect the ongoing war on terrorism.

Slamming as a violation of human rights the CIA drone strike in North Waziristan that targeted civilians a day after Davis left the country, Gen Kayani said: “The Pakistan Army has already lodged a protest in the strongest possible terms.” Of course, there have been countless rumours that the security and intelligence apparatus’ biggest crib with the drone programme is its reconnaissance dimension. They fear the Yanks are spying on them. So this is possibly just a reminder to Washington to play ball and not forget the debt it owes.
This, however, appears a point lost on MQM leader Altaf Hussain. Jumping on the blood money bandwagon, he has now declared: “We are willing to pay diyat for the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui” if the US agrees. How that would apply to an American court of law is not something he has clearly thought through. Ditto his demands that the US pay blood money for civilian lives lost through drone operations. He has evidently forgotten that his coalition partner okayed this form of remote-controlled warfare.

In what appears to be a major policy shift, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has invited the Taliban to join hands with their fellow countrymen, instead of disassociating themselves from Pakistan.
“I ask the Taliban leaders that this country came into being as a result of great sacrifices. Come and join Pakistanis…do not disassociate yourselves from Pakistan,” he said in a telephonic address at the 27th foundation day of the MQM on Friday.
The day was celebrated across Pakistan and Mr Hussain’s address was simultaneously relayed to 34 places in the country. Carrying MQM’s tri-coloured flags and portraits of Mr Hussain, a large number of people attended the main rally at Karachi’s Jinnah Ground.
Condemning the United States for drone attacks in tribal areas, Mr Hussain said that the US was violating Pakistan’s sovereignty and killing innocent people, adding that drone attacks were being carried out in clear violation of the UN charter.
He assured the government and the armed forces that every Pakistani would support them if they took ‘meaningful steps’ with courage and bravery to stop drone strikes and part ways with the carrot-and-stick game of superpowers.

Altaf invited the Taliban to “join Pakistan” as the country came into existence after great sacrifices. He urged the people to extend support to the MQM as the party followed the last sermon of Holy Prophet (PBUH) as its manifesto and pledged equal rights to all the citizens in Pakistan. He claimed that the MQM would bring a revolution in the country if the people extended their support to the party.
Altaf also supported the demand of Seraiki and Hazara provinces and demanded of the government to resolve the Balochistan issue through negotiation. A large number of people, including women and children, attended the gathering at the Jinnah Ground under tight security.

ALTAF HUSSAIN CALLS SAHIBZADA FAZAL KARIM
LONDON: 23RD DECEMBER 2010:
The Founder and Leader of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Mr Altaf Hussain called head of Sunni Ittehad Council Sahibzada Fazal Karim and discussed with him the political situation in the country, internal and external threats to Pakistan, RGST, price-hike, menace of corruption and other issues being faced by the people. Mr Altaf Hussain said that the country was passing through difficult times and we had look up to IMF and World Bank for running the business of the state which had put a big question mark over the national honour and self-esteem. He said that those who were already paying taxes were being burdened through RGST while those who evaded taxes through unfair means were being given free hand. He regretted that the situation has come to pass where poor people were being forced to sell their children because of extreme poverty and were committing suicides because of hunger and want.
Mr Altaf Hussain said that it was time for all political and religious parties to show a sense of unity by setting aside their political differences. “We must all rise to the occasion by working for national security and for freeing the country from the abyss of foreign debts in order to prove to the world that Pakistan is an honourable nation.” Sahibzada Fazal Karim agreed with Mr Altaf Hussain and said that some forces were trying to weaken the country hence we should defeat the conspiracies by making united efforts. He thanked Mr Altaf Hussain for his bold stance on police brutalities towards the participants of long march of Sunni Ittehad Council and asked for continuing the mutual contacts for national security.

” Diyat for Aafia”: One minor detail again which Bhai missed as usual. Dr. Siddiqui committed the crime supposedly by attacking US servicemen at Bagram Air Base. Even though it may be in Afghanistan, but the Base itself is US territory, for the purpose of determining “venue”, where a crime was committed.
So in US venue, the “Diyat” is not applicable. Even for the sake of argument, if we were able to apply it somehow, no one was killed, so “Diyat” will not be applicable.
Lastly, Bhai should advise all the sector in charges to collect extra “chanda” so an appeal can be filed for the reversal of Afia’s verdict in US Supreme Court. Let’s see if Bhai can put his money, where his mouth is.

The Poor, Sensitive, Hot and Bothered Revolutionaries!
OMG. I don’t think anyone could have done a better parody even if they had tried. I laughed so hard I almost cried. A Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) supporter / activist presents his case to an Aaj TV cameraman. See this clip to understand why, as the title of the clip says, Imran Khan is doomed. (Thanks to Syed Ali Raza Abidi for the link.)
For those who do not understand the revolutionary Urdu slogans, here is a word-for-word translation of what Islamabad’s Che Guevara says:
“See what is happening with our sisters and mothers in this demonstration. We are all from good families. We have come out on to the streets to raise slogans for Imran Khan. We are being beaten by our own police. They’re pushing us. We have come for a revolution, for your country. Every person here has come out of his house for this. Who would do such demonstrations in such heat [otherwise]? The police is shoving us, for what? For a foreigner? For Raymond Davis? He caused such bloodshed in Lahore and ran away to his home. See what is happening with Afiya Siddiqui. Nobody has such justice. We have all come out on the streets. Our homes have curtains too. Our women also do purdah. But when revolution requires it, every person in the home comes out on the streets. [To off camera supporter] Am I lying? I’m saying the correct thing, right? Everyone comes out. Sir, look our own police is beating us, how can we bring about a revolution? You tell me, you’re from the media. If you’re with us, only then will the revolution come about. If the police don’t beat us up, only then will the revolution come about. Now look at Imran Khan. What need does he have for this, he’s a very rich man. He’s standing up there on the stage and addressing people and even he is getting pushed around. Everyone’s getting pushed left, right and centre. This brother here, he’s totally sapped by the heat. Do we have any need of coming here?”
Or as they say, ‘Agar ammi mana na karteen, tau inquilaab zaroor aata!’*

DAWN WIRE SERVICE http://www.lib.virginia.edu/area-studies/SouthAsia/SAserials/Dawn/1995/29Je95.html
ISLAMABAD, June 27: Hashimuz Zafar for whose release MQM had given a 48-hour ultimatum to the government at a press conference, held at the PID press centre on Tuesday, claimed that the MQM wanted to create a general desperation where the people of Karachi would be left with no other option but to support the demand of a separate province.”The present spate of terrorism will continue till March 1996 when the MQM has planned to put forth the demand of holding a referendum on the issue of a separate province,” he alleges.
“If the government does not accept the demand for a referendum, the MQM would raise the issue at the international level and project it as a denial of the right of self-determination for creating a parity- between Karachi and Kashmir,” he said. Hashimuz Zafar in this regard referred to an open letter of Altaf Hussain of 1994 in which he had reportedly hinted that “agencies” wanted to create Sindhu Desh and greater Punjab and make Karachi a satellite state of a greater Punjab.
Obviously such a situation would not be acceptable to the people of Karachi and they would prefer independence rather than becoming a satellite state of a greater Punjab, he said. Given the geographic importance of Karachi, Western and regional powers would willingly throw their weight behind the demand and force a solution of both the Kashmir and Karachi issues, he added. Zafar accused a former minister and brother of a serving general Chaudhry Nisar Ali, for leaking details of the army operation in Sindh to Altaf Hussain.
He also alleged that leaders of the ANP in Karachi had been supplying arms to the MQM. He also named some PML MNAs from Karachi as the financiers of the MQM. Zafar seemed well prepared for the press conference. He had notes with him and in a very systematic way he not only gave details of his crimes but also briefed a hostile press about the MQM’s operational mechanism, its alleged Indian connections, strategy and ultimate goals. He was very confident and conducted the press conference like a seasoned media manager. He also gave full details about eight terrorist groups and their area of operation at present active in Karachi.
Hashimuz Zafar, 25, and resident of house No C-17 Sir Syed Town, North Karachi, said he had joined the All Pakistan Muhajir Students Organisation at the age of 17 when he was studying in Government College of Technology.
He confessed to involvement in numerous crimes, Including the murder of MQM Chairman Azim Ahmed Tariq.
The organisational set-up of the MQM, which comprised units, sectors, zones and main centre at Nine-Zero, he said, was disbanded before the military operation. Now an underground information centre was maintaining a link with 22 different sectors. Some time Altaf Hussain, through Nadeem Nusrat, issues orders to the sectors-in-charge for carrying out different operations on mobile phones. Pagers were also being used to maintain a link and convey messages, he said. The sector in charge of Landhi, Amir Siddique, and the sector in charge of Malir, Qamar Ghalib, are currently manning the information centre,” he claimed.
Giving details of various groups active at the sector level, he said the Khalid Taqi Butt group was active in the old city area, Liaquatabad, Lines Area, Society, Clifton, Defence and PIB Colony. The Farooq Dada group was operating in Pak Colony, Baldia Town, Nazimabad, and Gulbahar. The Faheem Commando group is active in Federal B. Area, North Karachi and Nazimabad.
Tahir Rafi, Arif Qureshi, Khuram and 10 other boys were the members of the Mubeen Thunta group controlling the Malir and Model Town areas. Then there were other groups, like those headed by Javed Khan, Javed Michael, Asfar, Khaliq Anjum, Kamal Ansari alias Par, and Muhammad Shahid. The MQM, he said, was regularly maintaining a hit list which was update from time to time. Names of the members of MQM Haqiqi political rivals, defectors and known police officers were on this list. Altaf Hussain, he said, personally checked this but list and gave approval. However, a source disclosed that the programme of press conferences would continue for quite some time as a number of MQM “activists” had been arrested in Islamabad during the last one month. One by one all of these would be presented before the press and electronic media.

Altaf warns of launching armed struggle Correspondent DAWN WIRE SERVICE Week Ending : 29 January 2000 Issue : 06/05 http://www.lib.virginia.edu/area-studies/SouthAsia/SAserials/Dawn/2000/29jan00.html#alta
LONDON, Jan 27: Muttahida Qaumi Movement appears close to declaring unilateral declaration of independence as its chief Altaf Hussain on Thursday sounded, what he termed, “bugle” of war by warning the establishment that if killings of Mohajirs are not stopped he will have no other option but to launch an armed struggle and seek
support from a neighbouring country. Talking to Pakistani reporters at MQM’s international secretariat
at Colindale area of London after its formal inauguration, the MQM chief said that he had tried every method while remaining within the four walls of the Constitution but the “Punjabi establishment” has refused to accept Mohajirs and the mandate given to the MQM by
the people.
“We are termed anti-Pakistani, agents of (Indian intelligence agency) RAW, and anti-state,” he said while referring to the oft-repeated charges levelled by the intelligence agencies against his organization. A few years ago the ISI had claimed to have unearthed MQM’s plan of creating “Jinnahpur” but the MQM had denied the plan and said it was a conspiracy to defame Mohajirs.
Mr Hussain said the ISI from the very beginning had been accusing him as an agent of RAW, a charge he denied vehemently. The MQM chief regretted that despite all his assurances to the army and other authorities that neither he nor the MQM, nor Mohajirs were anti-Pakistani, they were being persistently pushed against the wall.
Asked whether he was close to declaring unilateral declaration of independence, the MQM Chief said “Khuda Karey” (may God help in doing so). The MQM chief, who told the Pakistani establishment to take his today’s statement as a “bugle” of war, said he was not anti-Pakistani and wanted to remain in Pakistan.
SINDHI-MOHAJIR UNITY: Meanwhile the MQM chief in an open letter, said Sindh had virtually become a colony of Punjab, and that the Sindhis had been denied their rights. Addressing the people of Sindh, he asked them to give serious consideration to his letter, in which he posed the question: “Have the common Sindhis of the province of Sindh got freedom after the creation of Pakistan? “
Altaf Hussain granted permanent residency by British government? DAWN WIRE SERVICE Week Ending:23 January 1999 Issue : 05/04 http://www.lib.virginia.edu/area-studies/SouthAsia/SAserials/Dawn/1999/23Jan99.html#alta
The British government has granted permanent residency to Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain, claim MQM sources. Reports reaching here from London suggest that the British government has permitted Mr Hussain to live in UK for an indefinite period. This decision was apparently conveyed in a letter sent by the British Home Department. Mr Nadeem Nusrat, political secretary to Altaf Hussain, has also been given the same concession. Mr. Altaf Hussain had submitted his application for political asylum to the British Government immediately after the Operation Clean-up started in Sindh in June 1992. It may be mentioned that the governments of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif had approached the British government to repatriate Mr Altaf Hussain who is wanted in several cases of heinous crimes in Pakistan.

http://www.nawaiwaqt.com.pk/E-Paper/Lahore/2010-10-24/page-12/detail-28

Altaf Hussain’s father-in-law placed under house arrest?

By Mansoor Khan
KARACHI: Former Sindh advisor and father-in-law of Mutthaida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain, Faisal Gabol, claimed Friday that he has been placed under house arrest by the provincial government.
Gabol, while speaking to Daily Times on the phone from his residence, said he was being detained but failed to give any reasons why. He said he did not know why he was not being allowed to leave his house. Gabol also said that he did not have any faith in his party, which is in power in Sindh.
“Gizri SHO Irfan Kobra came to my house this afternoon around 3:00 p.m. and told me that he had orders to detain me in my house. This is sheer harassment, and this is not the first time that the government has proceeded against me. I was also stopped from travelling to London on May 28,” Gabol said. He said that the SHO told him that he was simply following orders, which were issued by SSP Amin Yousfzai.
“I have been under pressure since my daughter developed some domestic issues in London,” Gabol said.
Gabol said three police mobile units were stationed outside his house along with 25 police personnel, some of which included officials of the CID.
Clifton TPO Imran Yaqoob played down the matter. “I was at his [Gabol’s] place this evening and had tea with him. The police mobile units are a routine matter. We have given him a new one, besides the one that was already stationed outside his house. This is because the old one was quite old. There is no issue of any house arrest,” he said.
Advisor to the Chief Minister on Information Salahuddin Haider had a similar reaction. “We have provided him (Gabol) security ever since his portfolio was taken away from him on September 30,” he said.
Haider also claimed that he would issue a statement soon that would explain the matter clearly.
Late Friday night, the Sindh government issued a clarification stating that “the news about the house arrest of former Advisor is totally incorrect. No arrest has been made and he was provided with security even after his quitting of office that security still continues”.
When Daily Times contacted the London MQM’s secretariat, it was told by Anis Advocate that the Sindh government was the relevant authority to speak to regarding the matter.
