Change.org Petition: Dawn.com’s provocative story on ‘Why Shias Mourn’
Editor’s note: The Salafi Wahhabi and Deobandi enemies of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUHP) family want to antagonize the peaceful Sunni and Shia mourners of Imam Hussain a.s. by inserting their hypocritical narrative in the midst of Aushra of Muharram. Are we to logically believe that millions of Hussainis are gathering worldwide in the face of Salafi Wahhabi and Deobandi terrorism, sacrificing their children in the name of Imam Hussain, for any other reason than the love of the Prophet PUBHP and his progeny?
If the problematic allegation that the Shi’as were responsible for killing Imam Hussain (as) were true then it begs an even more troubling question, why did the majority Ahlul’Sunnah (Sunnis) not come to his aid? After all they were in the majority, there were millions of such individuals, what was their position at that time?
Dawn News (AFP) published a strory on Iraq Ashura which contained misleading content about ‘Why Shi’ite observe Muharram Rituals’. The following lines are based on a particular Wahabi Ideology which is intended to mislead the readers and defame Shia Islam and mutilate its image.
“To mark the occasion, modern-day Shia devotees flood Hussein’s mausoleum, demonstrating their ritual guilt and remorse for not defending him by beating their heads and chests and, in some cases, making incisions on their scalps with swords in ritual acts of self-flagellation.”

Correction: “Why Shias Mourn”
The commemoration of Ashura is observed to propagate and keep alive the message of Imam Hussain, of remaining steadfast against the the evil of the time and raise voice against injustice and oppression.
Matam (self-flagellation) is a way of demonstrating the reverence for Imam a.s and his household. Thus honoring their memories and informing people about them in accordance with the advice of the Prophet (pbuhp), and provide Muslims with what they need for guidance.
All of you are requested to record your protest against this irresponsible act of a reputed newspaper of Pakistan
Such mindless pontification about a major school of thought should be avoided by a reputed paper like Dawn. If it was a mistake, it says a lot for the flaw of their policy; if it was deliberate then they should come out if they have this anti Shia policy or not.
Matam is a way of demonstrating the reverence for Imam a.s and his household. Thus honoring their memories and informing people about them in accordance with the advice of the Messenger (S), and provide the Muslims with what they need for Guidance.

So clearly this matam, zanjeer-zani, qama-zani, taziya,etc. is nothing but bidah.

The truth is that a large part of the Population of Kufa was in a state of imprisonment at that time and also on the other hand the Majority of people who came to the side of the Imam were from Kufa so it is not really that simple. Also Kufa at that time was not a Shia Majority City and the Majority of its inhabitants considered Ali to be another caliph just like his 3 predecessors i.e. the 4th. As far as Matam is concerned at the Battle of Mautah where the Prophets beloved uncle was killed the Prophet of Islam said that prior to observing the mourning of the dead of others they would observe his uncles loss and that there has been some form of Matam since time immemorial even during the eras of previous prophets and this is a natural expression of grief. It has always been the custom among Arabs since the Battle of Mautah to observe the Matam of Hamza prior to mourning their own dead so Matam is nothing new but something transcending time and space.
Dear Captain Clematis! The Prophet SAW, had permitted the ladies of his household to mourn the death of Hazrat Hamza after the battle of Uhud, not after the battle of Mautah. As far the discussion generated, on the above mentioned article , Dawn should not have carried such controversial story , in which the Editor had to add an explanatory note. There are already enough controversies among the Ummah and we should avoid hurting the sentiments of our Shia brothers when they are busy in mourning during Muharram.

As for those who support the idea of “Shia Guilt” than they will have to put the same guilt on Bibi Ayesha (Prophet [pbuh & hp] wife and daughter of Hazrat Abu Bakr as she also did matam and ran out of the house and into the mosque full of Prophet’s companions when she heard the false news of Prophet’s (pbuh & hp) martyrdom.
