Khalid Khwaja’s murder: Is Hamid Mir and Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman’s arrest likely?
Is Hamid Mir about to be arrested for his alleged role in Khalid Khwaja’s murder through his friends in Punjabi Taliban?
Is Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman too about to be arrested in his capacity as Hamid Mir’s employer. Jang Group / Geo TV is notorious for its links with the Taliban, and has in its lust for more sensational stories always traded Pakistan’s national interests with its advertising revenue. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman was not aware of Hamid Mir’s sinister links with the Punjabi Taliban which ultimately led to the tragic murder of Khalid Khwaja.
However, any such arrest is unlikely before Colonel Imam and the British journalist are safely recovered from Hamid Mir and Mir Shakil’s friends’ custody:
According to several news reports (not reported in Jang/The News/ Geo TV), three intelligence agencies have confirmed the authenticity of the recorded conversation between Hamid Mir and Usman Punjabi (a lieutenant of Hakimullah Mehsud) after a detailed investigation.
The sources said the intelligence agencies, including the ISI, had submitted a report on the matter to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
“The conversation between Hamid Mir and the Taliban militant is original and has been proved by the audiotape,” the TV channels quoted the report as saying.
The Daily Times newspaper, which first reported on the tape, has said that information passed on by Mir to the Taliban “could have led to the execution” of former ISI official Khalid Khwaja.
Osama Khalid, the son of Khwaja, has said that he will take legal action and register an FIR against Mir for “playing an instigative role in his father’s murder.”
Talking to BBC Urdu, Khalid said the unidentified Taliban operative in the recording was Usman Punjabi who used the alias of Muhammad Omar while talking to journalists.
Khalid rejected Mir’s claims that the recording was doctored, saying the tape was original and he would prove it in court.
He demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter and asked journalists to kick “black sheep” out of the profession.
Meanwhile, Daily Times editor Rashed Rahman said legal action must be initiated against Mir after the ISI and government confirmed the authenticity of the taped conversation between the talk show host and a Taliban militant.
“The Daily Times initiated self-accountability in the media by publishing a transcript of the taped conversation between Mir and an unidentified Taliban militant,” he said, adding several people had contacted his media group with evidence against Mir.

the appearance of an allegedly doctored recording of famous journalist Hamid Mir speaking to an alleged Punjabi Taliban commander. Yet no one in our superior judiciary seems to have noticed, being much preoccupied.
….my friend Hamid Mir. He is a journalist of note who has endeared himself to many in the country. He is accused of saying very ugly things about the now-murdered Khalid Khawaja as well as for an already much persecuted minority, the Ahmadis. Mir insists the recording is a forgery, made by piecing together scraps of various conversations into one whole using new technology. May one crave the Supreme Court’s indulgence once more? Only it has the power to order an independent and high-powered judicial commission to get experts in the field of speech patterns and doctoring conversations so that this most serious matter is cleared.
As to what was said on the recording, let me condemn with all the strength at my command the part about Ahmadis being worse than kafirs. In any case, who is or is not a kafir is a matter best left to the Almighty to judge.

Terrorist hit puts Pakistani reporter under fireTaliban tape raises doubts
By Eli Lake (The Washington Times)
Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir, regarded as Osama bin Laden’s official biographer, is facing a backlash after a recording surfaced of his reported conversation with Taliban terrorists revealing a discussion of a kidnapped intelligence officer who was later killed by Punjabi terrorists.
Mr. Mir is best known for his access to the senior leadership of the Taliban and al Qaeda and also as a television anchor for Pakistan’s GEO-TV. He is one of the only journalists to interview Osama bin Laden after Sept. 11, 2001, and he also had several interviews with the terrorist leader in the late 1990s.
Over the weekend, Jang Media, which owns GEO-TV, announced that it is investigating published claims that Mr. Mir offered advice to an unidentified Pakistani Taliban operative regarding Khalid Khwaja, a former Pakistani intelligence officer who was kidnapped on March 26 by the Asian Tigers, or Punjabi Taliban. On April 30, Mr. Khwaja’s captors killed him.
Mr. Mir is suing a media company for libel for printing a story based on the tape. Mr. Mir has told other Pakistan media outlets that his voice is not on the 13-minute audiotape posted last week to several Pakistani websites. He has said he is being set up. Mr. Mir did not respond to e-mails requesting comment.
Mary Habeck, a professor and researcher on political Islam at Johns Hopkins University, said of Mr. Mir: “Hamid Mir has crossed over from being an observer and journalist to an actor who is now taking part in things he is supposedly just reporting on.”
A U.S. official who is informed about the matter said Mr. Mir has been known for voicing anti-American sentiments for a long time.
“It’s an open question as to whether he’s crossed the line from someone with very good access to terrorists to someone who’s involved in their activities,” the official said. “This audio recording is the most serious indication to date that Mir may be more than just an extremist sympathizer.”
The audiotape posted on Pakistani websites features a conversation between Mr. Mir and an unidentified Taliban officer. The conversation centers around Mr. Khwaja, a former major in the Pakistani army and a retired officer for Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s security and intelligence agency.
Mr. Khwaja, according to Bill Roggio, the editor of the Long War Journal, fought alongside bin Laden during the campaign against the Soviets in Afghanistan.
In the conversation, the Taliban operative asks for Mr. Mir’s opinion of Mr. Khwaja and the journalist seals his fate by claiming the captured ex-intelligence officer is connected to the CIA and an Islamic sect known as the Qadianis, a group considered infidels and traitors by al Qaeda and the Taliban.
“I think that Khalid Khwaja not only has links with the CIA but also works as an agent of the Qadianis,” a U.S. government translation of the phone transcript said. “And I am very sorry that he visits the tribal areas and meets the people here and there.”
Mr. Mir then goes on to say that Mr. Khwaja had contact in the 1980s with William Casey, President Reagan’s first CIA director.
Mr. Mir also says Mr. Khwaja double-crossed jihadists in 2007 during the siege of the Red Mosque in Islamabad.
Mr. Khwaja’s son, Osama Khalid, has said he will be suing Mr. Mir in Pakistani court, claiming the conversation led to the slaying of his father.
In a statement to the Pakistani press, the grieving son said: “We are going to the police and the Supreme Court in a few days to get a case registered against Mir as he was instrumental in the murder of my father by the Punjabi Taliban.”
Mr. Roggio said on Monday, “Hamid Mir’s discussion with the Taliban commander proves what many of us have known for years: He is more than just a jihadist sympathizer. He serves at times as an active participant by providing advice to the terror groups.”
This latest episode is not Mr. Mir’s first brush with controversy. In 2007, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf said Mr. Mir was a Taliban sympathizer and banned his television show on GEO-TV for four months during a period of emergency law.

A controversy is raging in Pakistan these days over the events that led to the execution on April 30, 2010 of a former ISI agent, Khalid Khawaja by a hitherto unknown group called the Asian Tigers. He was found dead in Miranshah, North Waziristan on April 30, 2010 — a month after being kidnapped by the Asian Tigers. He had gone there along with the legendary Colonel Imam (Sultan Amir Tarar) and a Pakistani-origin UK journalist Saad Qureshi who was making a documentary on the life of Colonel Imam. Khalid Khawaja’s body was found riddled with bullets. A written note left by the executioners stated that such was the fate of all agents of the US. Khalid Khawaja was a squadron leader in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) before he changed career to become an ISI officer. He was very close to Osama bin Laden. Apparently he was dismissed from the ISI for his outspoken views on jihad and in support of al Qaeda.
Some years ago, I saw him on an international television network, telling the interviewer something like this: ‘You value life, we consider worldly existence a transition so how can you fight with us?’ These were probably not the exact words he used but the message he wanted to convey was precisely what I have said: to deride the secularised western world’s emphasis on the importance of life on this earth while Khalid Khawaja claimed that he subscribed to a weltanschauung that valued life after death. He was of course presenting the jihadist point of view, which has in recent years produced hundreds of suicide bombers who while destroying thousands of lives have themselves put an end to theirs in the hope of milk and honey and doe-eyed damsels awaiting them.
On that occasion I could not help noticing the irony in Khalid Khawaja’s derision of life on earth: he had himself succeeded in growing middle-aged and some white hair in his beard could also be seen. He had not volunteered to become a suicide bomber, but had probably been very successful and satisfied in snuffing out the lives of many others. Now of course he has been executed by some group who found him to have been a CIA agent, a Qadiyani and all that. His wife, however, claims that he is a shaheed (martyr) and therefore already in paradise. I find all such arguments arbitrary and meaningless.
What is at stake is the fundamental question: should one not value life on this earth and give every person an opportunity to live his life in as fulfilling a manner as possible? It is possible that there is some existence even after death but I do not know of any culture where taking life is celebrated. So, the comparison between those who value life and those who value an existence after death is fundamentally a flawed one because of the ‘two states of being’, only one is confirmed and in all cultures when someone dies those who love or care for that person are struck with grief. Khalid Khawaja’s son Osama Khalid has decided to go to court to find out who was responsible for the execution of his father. That is a perfectly understandable response of a son devastated by the death of his father. Nobody would give him the love and affection that his father could. That is why I believe Khalid Khawaja was incontrovertibly in error for making fun of those who value life.
The second question is: who released the tape that shows Hamid Mir allegedly telling a Taliban — most certainly a Punjabi because of the accent — that Khalid Khawaja was an American agent and a Qadiyani? There is little doubt in my mind that the tape is genuine. Hamid Mir is known for his links with the Taliban and al Qaeda. His attempts to deny that he had said all that the people hear him say, makes him appear pathetic.
However, there must be someone willing to betray Hamid Mir, and the question is why? Is it because recently Hamid Mir made some very uncharacteristic statements condemning the genocide in Bangladesh, and that may have earned him the ire of those who think what we did in Bangladesh was justified and therefore Hamid Mir should have kept his mouth shut? Perhaps like Khalid Khawaja even Hamid Mir has become a liability and is therefore expendable.
It would be good if Hamid Mir’s alleged complicity in the murder of Khalid Khawaja is properly investigated. It must be an embarrassment for SAARC that recently conferred an award on Hamid Mir for conscientious journalism. That the same individual networks with two of the most bloodthirsty terrorist organisations in the world — al Qaeda and the Taliban — is an interesting case of duplicity.

Janab Hameed gul sahab kiyon chup hain ? apnay sachay dost Khalid khuwja kay qatal per jo in kay baqol indian agenton nay kerwaya hay . ab woh Hamid mir kay baray main kia kehtay hain?
I do believe that Hamid Mir’s saga is not just that he could have contributed to the killing of former Squadron Leader and ISI official Khalid Khawaja by telling that unknown person (who sounded like he was somewhere in the tribal areas and involved with a terrorist group) by alleging that Khalid worked for the CIA among other allegations but the fact people like Hamid Mir with known links with Al Qaeda are also alleged to be the intelligence agencies men and work for the biggest media group in the country. No wonder, no newspaper or TV channel took even notice of the story till one of the Pakistan daily broke it on its first page. And yet the media has the audacity to make claims about its independence, integrity, objectivity..etc. The reality is that while politicians have been made to account for their deeds (even though motives related more to revenge and witch-hunting), the Army, the Media, and the Judiciary are not accountable at all. Pakistani people must be freed from the tyranny of these anchors many of whom are no more than hired spokesmen of the intelligence agencies. Not only media men but also judges are working on the behest of some fifth coloumns. The question is why judges, media and establishmet is above from accountability and law. They are the very must part of system and involved in all type of crimes from corruption to violation of Pakistan penal code. Why these factions are treated as supernatural and democratic Governments and elected representatives face the music for even their good intentions. I am sure true accountabiliy is only possilbe when all these segements would not be spared for their deeds.
Is there a CIA connection?
When the ISI nabbed Baradar on the pointing of CIA, Pakistan was asked to immediately hand him over to US authorities or to Afghan regime. Such a move besides triggering anti-army/ISI sentiments in Pakistan and among Afghan Pashtuns would have lowered high image of the two premier institutions. Angered by the immoral action, it would have given a genuine cause to Afghan-Pak Taliban to join hands to fight the deceiver. When Pakistan refused to hand him over, it defeated the sinister plan.
Kidnapping of two former ISI officers and a British journalist in March from North Waziristan (NW) had a connection with Baradar since his release was to be bartered. Reportedly Khalid Khwaja was killed by Asian Tigers (Punjabi Taliban) on 25 March at the instigation of famous Geo TV anchor Hamid Mir whose conversation was tape recorded. However, he had cooked his goose when he filed a petition in law court to prevent Baradar’s extradition, which annoyed CIA and he was marked as a target. The other two captives have since been released by the captors on the persuasion of Taliban leaders.

TV anchor questioned in Khwaja murder case
By Munawer Azeem
Friday, 28 May, 2010
ISLAMABAD: Investigators looking into a complaint lodged by Osama Khalid, the son of former ISI official Khalid Khwaja who was found murdered last month, approached television anchor Hamid Mir on Thursday and questioned him about allegations levelled against him by the victim’s son, sources told Dawn.
On May 25, Osama Khalid had lodged a complaint against Mr Mir, Usman Punjabi and a militant group called Asian Tigers, alleging that they were involved in the murder of his father.
During the interrogation, the sources said, Mr Mir denied any acquaintance with a man named Usman Punjabi. He also denied having ever talked to the man by phone, the sources said, adding that the voice in the audio-tape had been forged.
The sources quoted the investigators as saying that they would now quiz the complainant, Osama Khalid, on Friday to clear some ‘doubtful queries’. The investigators said that Osama Khalid had not approached the police since lodging his complaint and that a request made to him to furnish evidences, including the audio-tape, of the allegation mentioned in the complaint, had yet to be fulfilled.
The sources said that in his complaint, Osama Khalid had said his father had gone to tribal areas at the urging of Mr Mir and after the release of audio-tape in which the TV anchor had allegedly talked with Usman Punjabi, the matter should be investigated.
Ayaz Ahmad Sayal, Osama Khalid’s lawyer, said that Shalimar police had given them a number registered in the police daily diary after the submission of the complaint.
But, he said, the complainant wanted the registration of a case and action against TV anchor, Usman Punjabi and the Asian Tigers.
He claimed that the Shalimar police had approached the legal branch for advice as to under which section the case would be registered. The fate of the complaint would be clear within a couple of days, he said.
In his complaint lodged on May 25, the complainant had called for a proper inquiry into the killing of his father and a legal action against those behind the murder.

Hamid Mir appears to be very anxious. That’s why he is forcing The News to publish the following kind of laughable items:
Five political parties condemn ‘conspiracy against Hamid Mir’
Sunday, May 30, 2010
By By our correspondent
ISLAMABAD: Leaders of five different political parties have condemned a baseless propaganda campaign against senior journalist Hamid Mir and demanded of the government to expose the secret hands trying to silence the voice of free media through blackmailing tactics.
According to a joint statement, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan of PML-N, chief whip of the PML-Q in the NA Riaz Pirzada, parliamentary leader of PPP (S) Aftab Sherpao, parliamentary leader of Fata group Munir Khan Orakzai and Senator Zahid Khan of ANP expressed solidarity with Hamid Mir and said that some secret hands had tried to involve Hamid Mir in the murder of a former ISI official on the basis of a mysterious audiotape. They said that Hamid Mir had always stood by democracy and he had received lot of threats from extremist groups in the past and no one can believe that he can have any unprofessional contacts with any militant group. Four leaders — Sherpao, Pirzada, Munir Orakzai and Zahid Khan have been attacked and threatened by the Taliban many times in the past.
Police sources are of the view that the murder of Khalid Khawaja took place in North Waziristan on April 30 and Osama filed an application against Hamid Mir on May 25. Shalimar police have sent the application of Osama to the legal branch for advice. Information Minister Kaira has already condemned this ‘conspiracy against Hamid Mir’ many times.

Any reasonably person can work out that Hamid Mir has blood on his hands. Not just of KK but of many Ahmadies killed in Lahore Mosque attacks by PTT. It is surprising that after many months, US has still not picked him up and shaken him down.
Let’s see what the Pakistani Judicial System does with this. I expect not much, since the media is corrupt and judiciary is full of sinister people and most likely swayed by the rulers.
Mr Nawaz Sharif was accused by KK of meetings with OBL. I guess he may be directing the outcome.
It is also interesting to note why some people call Geo the Jew TV channel.
Good luck Khalid with your father’s murder case. You will need it.
