Fauzia Wahab’s defamation notice to Ansar Abbasi – Well Done Madam! – By Ahmed Iqbalabadi

PPP’s Central Information Secretary and MNA, Fauzia Wahab has sent a defamation notice to our favorite, Ansar Abbasi for views expressed by him in a Private TV Talk Show. The notice has been sent with reference to Section 3 (1) of Defamation Ordinance, 2002. The matter has been reported in The News earlier on 16th May, 2010.  (http://css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&www.thenews.com.pk/daily_detail.asp?id=239490)

Fauzia Wahab, Roedad Khan and Ansar Abbasi

A program called “Dunya Today” hosted by Dr. Moied Pirzada was aired on Dunya News on 10th May, 2010. Participants of the program were Fauzia Wahab, Roedad Khan and Ansar Abbasi. The program can be viewed on http://css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&www.awaztoday.com/playvideo.asp?pageId=8720. Around 7 minutes into the show, when Ansar Abbasi was going on with his rants of “corruption, good governance, media par pa bandiyan” against the PPP government, Fauzia Wahab asked “Agar mulk mayn aazaadi-e-sahafat ya media kee azadi na hoti to kya Ansar Abbasi 2 saal say iss tarah kee reports likh saktay thay?”. It was here that Ansar Abbasi pointed towards Fauzia Wahab and said ‘in ka bus chale to humari gardan utaar dein’, (if it was up to her (Ms Fauzia Wahab), she would slit our throats). As per my understanding of the Defamation Ordinance, what Ansar Abbasi says, falls under “Slander”.

Well done Ms. Fauzia Wahab. You have the courage to at least stand up to these prophets of doom who can write whenever and whatever they want. It would be interesting to see what he responds to in his reply, which is required to be submitted in 14 days time. I am sure, his friends in media i.e. Tariq Butt, Shahid Masood, Kamran Khan and his colleagues in The News Umar Cheema, Ahmad Noorani etc will turn more aggressive against Fauzia Wahab and the PPP in the upcoming days.

It was also interesting to read Ansar Abbasi’s innocent response which has been published in his newspaper. “I was making a general and sarcastic statement about the attitude of the government/PPP towards certain journalists, who have been receiving threats and death messages from certain members of the PPP and its government. I was in no way implying that Ms Wahab had a criminal record or any personal vendetta against me or intended to harm me personally.

Well Mr. Abbasi you should have been careful. Hopefully the aazad judiciary will act as per the law which has not been tested as yet.
