Intellectual dishonesty in misrepresenting Shia massacres in Pakistan

In the last 36 hours, 8 people were killed in a bomb blast in Karachi including a single mother and her child, 5 Pashtuns were killed in a bomb blast in a CD market in Peshawar, and just hours ago, 30 Shia Muslims (most of them Hazara Shias) were executed in Mastung, Balochistan. In all the three cases, it were the Taliban and their Takfiri Deobandi partners, the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ, also known as Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, SSP) that proudly took credit for these horrific deeds.
More than the grief of this continual bloodshed by these monsters is the intellectual dishonesty of misrepresenting these incidents and shifting and diverting the focus away from those responsible. In the case of the Shias, social networks are already evidence of the typical obfuscatory rubbish that is used to casually describe away these mass murders; the real outrage for Pakistan’s “civil society” is reserved for Americans like Aafia!
The outrage of our urban elites is limited to the drone attacks that kill Baitullah Mehsud and Al Qaeda’s multinational mercenaries and, tragically, Pashtun civilian hostages who are used as human shields by the Taliban and Al Qaeda. It rarely extends to the daily persecution, massacres and oppression of Pakistan’s Shia Muslims in this specific case.
The same Lashkar-e-Jhangvi that has killed 30 Shia Muslims today are also the ones who are also killing Ahmadi muslims and Barelvi Muslims as well as those Deobandi Muslims who oppose the misuse of their beliefs to bolster the Jihad Enterprise of Pakistan’s military establishment. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi is part of the Jihad factory of the ISI that has also developed similar units like Sipah-e-Sahaba, Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and the main militant outfit with its network of commanders, the Taliban. Allied with the Al Qaeda, they all share the same bigoted, misogynist and supremacist views and are an essential part of the foreign and domestic policy of the Deep State (i.e., Pakistan army) for the attainment of “Strategic Depth” in Afghanistan.
Journalists and commentators are already dismissing this incident as “sectarian violence” “sectarianism”, “sectarian conflict”. Whether they are being ignorant, indifferently or wilfully obtuse is left to the observer. The media has played a horrible role in misinforming the public and increasing bigotry has done the rest. Today, few if any are pointing out the obvious contradictions when such massacres are falsely being described as “routine sectarian violence” between Sunnis and Shias.
Case in point. Prominet Barelvi Sunni Muslim scholar, Maulana Sarfaraz Naeemi was killed in a suicide blast in Lahore after he publically opposed the Takfiri Deobandis (Taliban, LeJ) and thier tactics of suicide bombing. Maulana Hasan Jan, a moderate Deobandi Sunni Muslim was killed for, you guessed it, opposing the Taliban. Dr. Muhammad Farooq (a friend of Allama Javed Ghamidi) was killed in Swat by the same beasts. These are not isolated cases and are part of the scores of attacks that have killed Sunnis at Sufi shrines since the attacks on Bari Imam (2005) and Jhal Magsi (2005), where scores of Sunni devotees were killed along with Shias by the Takfiri Deobandis of the Sipah-e-Sahaba. This same nexus of Jihadi groups and Taliban has also killed, persecuted and oppressed the Ahmadi Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs and Christains of Pakistan.
However, terming it as “sectarian violence” is a dishonest tactic of shifting the blame away from the real culprits:
Those who created these militias (army-ISI) , those who protect them (the Supreme Court) and those politicians, like Imran Khan and Munawar Hasan, who continue to apologize for them with blatant lies to shift the focus away the Jihad Enterprise.
Imran Khan mantains with a straight face that there was no extremism in Pakistan and no suicide attacks either before 9/11 and none of the pliant interviewers (including Elliot Spitzer of CNN) bothers to contradict this with the facts that such attacks took place as early as 1995; a full 6 years before 9/11! Imran Khan is symbolic of the moral decripitude and mendacity of educated Pakistanis whose ignorance, bigotry and identity crisis has made them accept the most outlandish rubbish that protects the dark ambitions of Pakistan’s military establishment. For these soulless elites, the massacres of Shia Muslims can be explained away with half-truths and outright lies.
The inculcation of Jihadi laboratories in Southern Punjab by the military dictator General Zia ul Haq to create the Sipah-e-Sahaba/Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (they are the same) is dishonestly explained away as a anti-feudal uprising against Shia landlords in that area. Well today, the landlords of Jhang are still alive but not the thousands of Shia Muslims who have been killed by the “anti-feudal” Sipah-e-Sahaba all over Pakistan (who have also spared the feudals from other sects). The category of those Shias killed by the Sipah includes Pakistanis from all ethnic groups and professions except feudals while the Sipah-e-Sahaba and similar Jihadi groups are awash with funding from the rich urban trader classes of Pakistan as well as their sponsors from Saudi Arabia, UAE and other Arab countries.
The massacre of Shia Muslims in Pakistan is also often misrepresented and justified (yes, justified) as part of an ongoing sectarian battle between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Completely missing from this dishonest narrative is the role of the Pakistan State and the fact that since Shia Muslims opposed the forced Islamization policies of military dictator Zia ul Haq, they were made the targets of the State.
The Pashtun Shia Muslims of Parachinar and the Gilgiti Shia muslims opposed the the use of their territory for the purpose of “Strategic Depth” in Afghanistan and Kashmir and they have been massacred regularly since the 1980’s.
In 1980, hundreds of thousands of Shia Muslims launched a peaceful sit-in protest in the capital city of Islamabad to oppose the enforcement of the “Saudi Islamic” Zakat and Ushar Ordinance and since then, they have paid the price.
If the continuing massacres of Shia Muslims in Pakistan is justified via these dishonest narratives (how can killing of anyone be justified boggles the mind), then why are the Sunni Muslims (Barelvi, Deobandi, Ahmadi) and religious minorities (Hindu, Christain, Sikhs) being killed by the same perpetrators who are also killing Shia Muslims? The answer is in the question.
However, an increasing number of Pakistan’s urban educated elite prefer to remain ostriches and dismiss the killings of Shia Muslims as punishment for being Iranian fifth-columnists – for them, the Hazaras Shias undergoing genocide at the hands of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi are not worthy of sympathy.
On Twitter and Facebook, Ahmadi Muslim activists are prominent among those who are blunty condemning the Mastung massacre along with many other Sunni Muslims. This massacre is not about sectarianism; it is about the continued support to Jihadi monsters who are not sparing anyone. The time for denial has long gone.

Thank you for exposing Pakistani AS WELL AS international media’s dishonesty. They misrepresent the incessant Shia massacres as routine Sunni vs Shia sectarianism. Nothing could be further from truth.
LeJ terrorist don’t represent Sunnis. They only represent the powers that created them and still support them i.e. army/ISI. It is not Sunni vs Shia. It is ISI-SSP-LeJ vs Pakistan!
The bus driver, Khushal Khan, recounted harrowing details of the attack to reporters for two Pakistani TV channels who quickly reached the scene.
“There was no security on our bus. Eight to 10 attackers armed with Kalashnikovs and rocket launchers stopped the bus and forced all the passengers to get off,” he recalled while speaking to the media.
“45 passengers were travelling. Some of them managed to escape. I also managed to escape,” he said.
“The attackers then fled in their vehicle,” he said.
According to Express 24/7 correspondent Muhammad Kazim, another car was also attacked by gunmen in Quetta, killing two men. The car was reportedly enroute to Mastung to rescue survivors of the attacked bus.
Meanwhile the Shia Ulema Council has announced a seven-day mourning in the wake of the incident.
http://tribune.com.pk/story/256419/gunmen-attack-bus-in-balochistan-20-killed/
It was the deadliest attack against Shias in Pakistan since a suicide bomber killed at least 57 people at a Shia rally in Quetta in September 2010.
Shia Muslims are a minority in Pakistan. They are mostly ethnic Hazaras and say that nearly 600 of their community have been killed in sectarian attacks since 2002.
At least 13 people were killed when a suicide bomber struck in the car park of a Shia mosque in Quetta – capital of Balochistan province – during the Eid festival at the end of last month.
The BBC’s M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says that responsibility for most attacks has been claimed by the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) sectarian outfit, a predominantly Punjabi group with links to al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
Police in Balochistan have over the years arrested a number of LJ activists in connection with these attacks. Some of them have been sentenced to death or imprisonment by the courts.
Our correspondent says both police and the Shia community believe the mastermind behind most of the recent attacks was an LJ commander, Osman Saifullah, who was arrested in 2006 but escaped from a maximum security anti-terrorism prison in the cantonment area of Quetta in 2008.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-14992220
The banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the attack on the bus in calls made to newspapers in Quetta.
Mastung is considered a hub of the LeJ, a notorious sectarian group that has carried out numerous attacks on Shias across Pakistan.

I agree. It is not Sunni vs Shia. It is LeJ vs Pakistan.
See their hit list:
Security sources said some TTP-linked elements had distributed a leaflet in various outskirts of Karachi in the first week of July, carrying a “hit list” of anti-jihadi personalities, threatening that they would be killed along with family members. The pamphlet justified jihad and urged “pure Muslims” to rise up against elements creating problems for jihadis who were described as the defenders of Islam and Pakistan.
According to the leaflet, the definition of a criminal had been changed in recent times. “Previously, it was used for robbers and dacoits, but after 9/11 the term is being used for those who are sincere with the religion of Islam and want to wage jihad against the forces of the infidel.”
Those declared “liable to be killed” in the TTP pamphlet, along with the CID’s Aslam Khan, included: Capital City Police Officer Karachi Saud Mirza; CID superintendent Fayyaz Khan; Anti-Violent Crime Unit Chief Farooq Awam; Special Investigation Unit chief Raja Omar Khattab; former Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Wasim Ahmed; Sunni Deobandi scholar Mufti Mohammad Naeem, Shia scholar Mirza Yousuf Baig; and Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader Haider Abbas Rizvi. Television artists and anchors and some Karachi-based journalists were also on the list.

We must commend Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry for releasing Malik Ishaq. Their man has delivered. 28 Shia Muslims massacred in one day!
Where is Chief Justice? Is he not from Balochistan?
Why are human rights champions silent? They must highlight the ongoing massacres of Shia Muslims in the international media.
Yet another deadly attack on hazara shia community living in Quetta. and i have no doubts in my mind that taliban ally group behind this iam very sure that there is no American,Indian or Israeli hand is behind this massacre. i wonder why the flamboyant truth teller like zulfiqar mirza is still silent on this issue. like always the revolutionist Imran Khan has no plan to stage sitting strike against this gruesome act of his beloved taliban ? when would the Jamat-e Islami set out rallies to condemn the brutality of their so called heros of faith.? May Allah Crush These Talibans along with every one who supports them. dont worry hazara community these guys often become the victim of u.s led drone attacks so some how Allah is taking your revenge from these beasts.

A big misrepresentation that you have used is linking ISI to terrorist orgs such asSSP or LEJ. This is complete and utter rubbish. Both of Ssp and LEJ have been target by Pakistab agencies even before western public had heard of Afghanistan. Taliban is the creation of both CIA and ISI but remember when USA officials were coming to praide them in 80s.
@ Anjum:
Please know the difference in the tenses:
‘USA officials were coming to parade them in 80’s’
‘Pakistani establishment and media IS supporting them right now’
If USA did something wrong once upon a time, does not mean you can do it as well! Never saw you arguing secularism, removal of Islamic laws and other things for the reason that US did it too!

Great service to ISI by urban fake liberals!
Who killed the innocent Shia Muslims in Balochistan, investigative report: http://theterrorland.blogspot.com/2011/07/poor-shias-three-types-of-killings-in.html
Agree that establishgment is behind this massacre of innocent people whether shias, sunni, barelvi, wahhabbi etc,but you cant absolve your own government, they are letting innocent people get killed for nothing from Karachi to Khyber,PPP government is allied with USA and this is how they are protecting their interests by causing violence and riots in Pakistan,This PPP government has failed so miserably yet they are clinging to their seats shame on them, this is the worst government ever,no one is safe today ,there is no sucha thing as Law and Order in Pakistan, what abput 6000 innocent people killed in karachi?were they all shias?there is no MQm and PPP?
To all the people commenting who are trying to turn a blind eye to the fact that Shias are being persecuted and killed because of their religious beliefs, please refer to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qutbism The link is about Qutbism, which branched out from the Wahabi sect and is followed by the Taliban, extremist religious clerics and religious groups. This ideology is spreading in the muslim world. Apart from that, this is where intolerance starts: In 1801 and 1802, the Saudi Wahhabis under Abdul Aziz ibn Muhammad ibn Saud attacked and captured the holy Shi’a muslim cities of Karbala and Najaf in Iraq, massacred parts of the Shi’a muslim population and destroyed the tombs of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, and son of Ali (Ali bin Abu Talib), the son-in-law of Muhammad. (see: Saudi sponsorship mentioned previously) In 1803 and 1804 the Saudis captured Mecca and Medina and destroyed historical monuments and various holy Muslim sites and shrines, such as the shrine built over the tomb of Fatimah, the daughter of Muhammad, and even intended to destroy the grave of Muhammad himself as idolatrous. In 1998 the Saudis bulldozed and poured gasoline over the grave of Aminah bint Wahb, the mother of Prophet Muhammad, causing resentment throughout the Muslim world.–http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahabi
“A study conducted by the NGO Freedom House found Wahhabi publications in mosques in the United States. These publications included statements that Muslims should not only “always oppose” infidels “in every way”, but “hate them for their religion … for Allah’s sake”, that democracy “is responsible for all the horrible wars of the 20th century”, and that Shia and certain Sunni Muslims were infidels”—-My question is what are we as Pakistanis doing to stop this extremism and poisonous ideology?
These are historical facts, not some fairy tales spun by shias. Let’s look at current events. Saudi Arabia is clearly funding and supporting movements and clerics that spread extremist ideology claiming that shias and non-wahabi sunnis are sinners, that they are not “true” muslims, that they have strayed from islam. Shias, being heretics, in their opinion, do not have the right to practice their religion and are not “equal”. Proof: Shia muslims are not allowed to practice their religion in Saudi Arabia i.e. majlis etc is banned. If they do, they are punished and persecuted. Shias are discriminated against, even though there are some provinces in Saudi Arabia where they are in majority. Some much for “equality” amongst muslims. Recently Saudi Arabia sent it’s troops to Bahrain to support the Sunni non-democratic government there to crush the peaceful protests of the majority Shia population–The majority of citizens in Bahrain are Shia. Similarly, the majority Sunni Arab world turned a blind eye when Saddam Hussain persecuted and killed the shias in Iraq–again, Iraq has a majority Shia population. The Arab world also did not intervene or try and stop Saddam’s almost decade long war with Iran–why? Because Iran is a Shia state. This ideology that people do not have the right to practice their faith if they do not agree with you, this disrespect6 for religious differences, this idea that is is ok to kill someone just because you do not agree with them is a poisonous idealogy–it is spreading in the muslim world, it has taken root in Pakistan and it is being funded.
It’s so easy to sway the already conservative and many times uneducated and poor population to accept this idealogy and actually make them believe they are heros and protectors of Islam if they kills and persecute the “heretics” i.e. anyone who does not agree with their version of Islam. How can any civilized, decent and just human being turn a blind eye to this? Yes, shias and Sunnis are brothers–all muslims are supposed to be brothers and brothers DO NOT KILL brothers, they do not discrimate against their brothers or persecute them. So I request our muslim brothers and sisters, Sunni and others, to take a stand against this cruelty and inhumanity against the minority Muslim shia population in Pakistan and in other parts of the world. Turning a blind eye to this will not make this problem go away.
Help Ya Imam e Zamana, the evil yazadei wahabi lahabi devbandi Talibani Alqeada Lashakarey jangvey. All these evil people with the support of saudi’s king and his money to kill shia in Pakistan. May they go to hell.
Stop innocent Shia Muslim killing in Pakistan
This is indeed a tragic incident in a series of tragic incidents perpetuated against the Shia Hazara Community.
All Jihadi organizations tend to belong to Deobandi/Wahabi mind set, and in turn are sectarian in nature. Left idle for a while from their ‘handlers’, they start looking for local kills. Unfortunately our peaceful Shia brothers tend to be their prime target, but their activities are not limited to them alone, Gojra (Christian) and Ahmedis Mosque in Lahore are other examples of their handiwork.
Where ever the state has used them as assets, they have left behind a trail of bloody sectarian carnage. This seems to have happened after the Kargil Episode in Gilgit, in the siege of Parachenar for four years, and now with the disappearance of Baloch nationalist. In all these cases, mass murder of Shia’s has coincided with the presence and activities of banned militant organizations.
The only solution is to catch every single member of these organizations with a vengeance, which cannot be that hard to do, given their highly publicized sermons, publications and gatherings. Yet our establishment and Police seem unwilling to do this, and the bloodshed continues..
Another dishonest editorial in Dawn (Long live Abbas brothers):
http://www.dawn.com/2011/09/22/sectarian-killings.htm
Sectarian killings? My foot!
Some more info: “Beginning with the militant Salafis – fundamentalist conservatives – of Al-Qaeda, they are by and large of Qutbist – a fundamentalist and pan-Islamic political ideology – and Wahhabi – a sub-school of the Hanbali ‘fiqh’ or jurisprudence branch – tradition. Qutbists in particular believe Muslims who suffer from ‘jahiliyyah’ – unconscious corruption by western values and modernism – are valid targets of ‘Jihad’.”..”The militant salafis are also radically anti-shia and anti-republican. Their doctrine clearly states that the shia are not Muslims, that no government is legitimate except for the one anointed by God.
They uphold that to interpret the Quran is anathema and that the meaning of words and expressions can only be literal. Hence, the Jihad concept is reduced to its militant component and the centuries old theology that divides it into greater and lesser Jihad (the former translating into the effort to comply with Islamic Law, or inner struggle) is disregarded. Both qutbists and wahhabis clash with the Maaturidi and Ashari ‘aqidah’ – or theological schools – traditions for instance, precisely because of their contempt for the metaphysic the eclectic and the esoteric, and their obsession in claiming to know the absolute truth by studying the Qoran.
The Taliban on the other hand are a neo-Deobandi – a sub-school of the Hanafi fiqh – movement which derives from Islamic revivalist traditions dating back to the anti-colonialist struggle against the British Empire in India but many of the Taliban conscripts originate in Pakistani madrassas financed by international Muslim organisations from Gulf states which inculcated extremist Arab sunni principles.”…”Thus, there is a mix of ideologies but suspicion of al-Qaeda though, seems to be consensual. The more elder deobandis come out of sufi traditions and look down on the militant salafis literal interpretation of the Qoran – namely the controversy of Allah’s physical or metaphysical manifestation, militant salafis being accused of being ‘mujassimah’ i.e. anthropomorphists. A source of veiled uneasiness between deobandis and wahhabis for instance, is the level of attention given to the graves of the “great fallen” such as the Rashiddun (the Caliphs). The deobandi jurisprudence approves of pilgrimages to the graves, the wahhabi does not…both wahhabis and deobandis reject ‘shirk’ (polytheism) ’bidah’ (innovation) in Islam, namely they reject hadiths (extra-qoranic compilations of the words of the Prophet), other than the Hanbali and that of Wahhab. Both accuse shias of aposthasy, both tend to promote religious governments and denounce republican and secular ones and both promote primitive interpretations of sharia and are against the rights of women. All this of course explains why Al-Qaeda was able to so easily establish a partnership with the Taliban’s ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’.”
I hate this country.. I hate the idealogy of these peoples
Zehra Zaidi – I appriciate your comments. You told the history and pinpointed the cause of this sin – the Saudies Rulers. May ALLAH (Subhan u Tala) correct them and if they are not able to correct themselves, then I pray for their destruction in this world and hell in the after world. Aameen
It should be a wake up call for all those religious leaders in particular and other muslim sects in general who have been either supportng the persecution of Christian, Ahmadis and Sikhs or were silent when such terrorist activities were taking place. It can reach your homes and your places of worship. Your children and your families can be victims of such terrorism.
Here is a brief timeline of attacks on Shia Hazara community in year 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b_A0_PEcXA
Assalamu ‘alaykum, Intellectual honesty demands that the genuine issues should be truthfully addressed by all citizens. The illegalization of using abusive language against the Holiest of Companions-Abubakr,may Allah be pleased with Him,among other Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all, and its effective implementation can foil the attempts to play Iraq card in Pakistan, even if ignorant and illiterate Pakistani citizens are supposedly goaded into unconsciously acting on foreign agenda. Being a Sunni or Ahl-us-Sunnah or People of Sunnah means to follow original Islam of The Companions, may Allah be pleased with them all. Shah Waliullah rahimahullah was one of the greatest Ahl-us-Sunnah saints-scholars in the history of subcontinent. Modern educated Muslims should follow his footsteps.
Intellectual honesty also demands that we should be open-minded to alternate explanations. Dr Stuart Jeanne Bramhall
I’m really hoping CIA agent Raymond Davis’ arrest and trial is going to blow the lid off CIA covert operations in Pakistan. I find the Mar 1 speech Pakistani prime minister Gilani made to the Assembly – accusing “hostile external elements” of supporting the insurgency in the province of Balochistan – highly significant. http://tribune.com.pk/story/125602/baloch-insurgency-funded-from-abroad-pm/
Owing to their heavy dependence on the US for political and economic aid, the government has always tiptoed around the CIA “freedom fighters” in the Baloch separatist movement. The reality is that there’s really no way to ascertain whether random acts of terror in the tribal areas on the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan are caused by the Taliban, Al Qaeda or the Balochistan Liberation Army. However it’s obvious that the CIA’s role in training and financing Baloch separatists (they get paid $200 a month, $300 for section chiefs) is a major factor in the climate of violence and extreme political and economic instability. Clearly the government of Pakistan is under major pressure to make it stop. Gilani’s public warning suggests that Davis’ arrest has emboldened them to take a firmer stand.http://changinguppakistan.wordpress.com/2011/03/02/another-islamabad-assassination/

Saad Mansoor!! the real Sunni. yes you are right they all must be killed…… as this is what Sunnism is all about, kill christains, ahmadis, shias in short all, and let the world be left only with Sunnis, kudos to your thoughts Pakis……patha nahi kon si QURAN tum logo nay pari hogay jo yeh sab baatein bata thi sain…
Here is an example of how some well-wishers of persecuted communities might fall into the trap of false neutrality. The comments in bold offer one such example.
