ISLAMABAD, Oct 29: An apparent move to free an alleged land grabber, Taji Khokhar, from police custody during his appearance in court was foiled by the law enforcement agency here on Tuesday, police sources said.
Senior police officers on condition of anonymity told Dawn that 20 armed people arrived at the District and Session Court Islamabad at F-8 in five vehicles.
The men were armed with modern sophisticated weapons such as Kalashnikovs, 9mm pistols and submachine guns.
According to the police officials, the group had come to set Taji Khokhar free and also meant to kill Maulana Ishtiaq Al-Salakin, who was a complainant against Khokhar in a land grabbing case.
On March 6, 2011, Taji Khokhar along with 23 armed men had allegedly raided and occupied land measuring 136 kanals at Tarli Khurd.
A case was then registered in this regard with the Kural police on September 15 this year.
One of the police sources said, “We had a Special Brach report which maintained that Taji Khokhar’s henchmen will attack the lower court to set him free and assassinate the complainant.”
Taji Khokhar was scheduled to appear in the court in connection with the land grabbing case on Tuesday.
In light of the report, vigilance in and around the court was enhanced and the five vehicles were spotted near the court premises.
On suspicion, the police then approached the vehicles and asked the men to identify themselves, the sources said.
According to the police sources, they also spotted weapons inside the vehicle and seniors were informed immediately.
The area was cordoned off while the men were asked to surrender, but they put up resistance and started beating policemen with weapon butts and batons.
They also tore the uniforms of some policemen during the brawl. Subsequently, a contingent of police including the anti-terrorist squad reached the spot and succeeded to overpower the resisting men.
According to the sources, the police recovered 14 Kalashnikovs, 9mm pistols and sub-machine guns (SMGs) along with the batons, and all 20 men were shifted to the Margalla police station.
However, the police took hours to register a case and when it was finally registered, only 14 people were nominated in the FIR.
Furthermore, the police only mentioned the recovery of an SMG, six magazines and 94 rounds.
The case was registered on charges of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) 148 (rioting), 49 (unlawful assembly), 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 224 (resistance to lawful apprehension), 353 (Criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 511 (attempting to commit offences) along with the Arms Ordinance.
The police sources said the Margalla police had allowed four main people to leave the police station along with their ammunition.
They maintained that in the FIR, it was mentioned that six people had managed to escape from the scene when police tried to arrest them.

ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: Imtiaz Ahmed, alias Taji Khokhar, has been booked in a two-year-old land grabbing case after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) directed the Koral police to register an FIR against him.
Mr Khokhar is currently confined in the Adiala Jail in a case related to the murder of a woman in August last year.
The joint investigation team of the Punjab police, which is investigating the said case, stated in its report that Taji Khokhar led land grabbers and had employed a number of people in this regard.
The team also pointed out that Mr Khokhar was facing nine cases of murder, kidnapping of government officials, land grabbing and other crimes in different police stations of Rawalpindi.
On Monday, the IHC ordered for another case against Mr Khokhar while hearing a complaint lodged by Mohammad Ishtiaq, a resident of Islamabad’s suburb Tarlai.
According to Mr Ishtiaq, Taji Khokar, along with 20 others, had occupied his 135-kanal land near Ghauri Town in March 2011.
The accused had also threatened the complainant of dire consequences when the latter tried to resist the attempt.
He said the land grabbers demolished his house and also removed all building material from the site.
Later, he approached the Station House Officer (SHO) Koral who refused to register an FIR against Taji Khokhar. However, on March 31, 2011, a civil court directed the same SHO to record Mr Ishtiaq’s statement.
On the other hand, the alleged land grabbers had challenged the civil court’s decision before the session judge and the matter subsequently arrived in the IHC.
The high court, after hearing the counsels, ordered the police to register a case against the alleged land grabbers and disposed off the matter.

ISLAMABAD, July 24: A day after letting the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi off the hook, police on Wednesday declared Imtiaz alias Taji Khokhar innocent in a woman murder case.
After getting a clean chit from the police, Taji Khokhar filed an application with special judge of Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Rana Masood Akhtar seeking withdrawal of bail application.
The Airport Police SHO Ahsan Aziz Niazi appeared before the court and declared that Taji Khokhar was not present on the occasion when Sabra bibi was murdered on August 17, 2012 by the gunmen at Dhoke Gangal near the Islamabad Expressway.
Taji and other accused in the case were initially booked under Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) and they were tried in the ATC.
The same judge on November 26, 2012 deleted the terrorism related offence of 7 ATA against Taji Khokhar and others and referred the woman murder case to the court of sessions judge of Rawalpindi.
Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi bench, however, returned the case again to the ATC after the Punjab prosecution department in December challenged the ATC order.
Taji Khokhar, the brother of former deputy speaker Nawaz Khokhar, had a land dispute with the deceased woman who was summoned by a one-man commission, headed by Raja Saimul Haq Satti advocate, to appear at the disputed land, at Dhoke Gangal, near the Expressway.
After the incident, her husband got an FIR registered with the Airport Police, alleging that in the middle of the commission’s proceedings Taji Khokhar and his sons opened fire on his wife killing her on the spot.
Taji’s sons, Umer Khokhar and Farrukh Khokhar, also withdrew their bail applications after the police inspector gave a statement in their favour.
Initially, the airport police prepared a weak case against Taji Khokhar. When the Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif in December last year took notice of the matter and ordered Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to investigate the murder, the prosecution made a comparatively tough case against the alleged murderer.
The JIT in his report released in December alleged that Taji Khokhar led land grabbers and he had employed a number of persons in his squad. He also enjoyed clout with the local police.
The JIT also pointed out that Taji was facing nine cases of murder, kidnapping of government officials, land grabbing and other crimes in different police stations of Rawalpindi.
According to JIT, Taji’s son Farrukh Khokhar was also nominated in two murder cases.
Umer Khokhar was involved in intentional murder and kidnapping cases, the report added.
It said that other 11 accomplices of Taji nominated in Sabra Bibi murder case were facing a number of cases in different police stations of Rawalpindi.
The JIT report also pointed out that local police including Airport Police SHO were getting monetary benefits from him and recommended action against the police officers.
The JIT comprising senior police officers in its report stated that Sabra had an old dispute (2 kanals and 9 marlas) with Taji Khokhar and on March 2012, both the parties had agreed to settle the issue mutually.
However, Taji Khokhar ended up constructing on the disputed land without giving Sabra compensation.
On her application a local court issued a stay order and on August 13, 2012, appointed a one-man commission headed by lawyer Raja Saimul Haq Satti to record statements of both the parties at the site.
Satti in his report mentioned that at the time of the incident Taji was not present at the site.
It may be mentioned that JIT in its report also alleged that Raja Saimul Haq Satti abetted the accused in committing the crime.
After the JIT prepared the report Taji, in order to avoid arrest, left the country, but returned last month and applied for the pre-arrest bail.
The Supreme Court earlier this year also took suo motu notice of the murder case.
The apex court on April 9 had directed the inspector general of Punjab to arrest the alleged murderer of Sabra bibi and start process for the confiscation of the property of the accused who were absconders in the murder case.
Ghufran Khursheed Imtiazi, counsel for the spouse of the deceased woman, when contacted, said that the police had cleared Taji after receiving hefty bribe.
He said that the he would challenge the police act of giving clean chit to the murderer of unarmed aged woman in the high court.
Prosecutor general Punjab Sadaqat Ali Khan when contacted said that it was the highhandedness of the police inspector as he declared an alleged murderer of a woman innocent.
He said that the JIT, who found Taji guilty, comprised senior police officials and was headed by DIG investigations of Punjab.
“This was a misconduct of the SHO and I will recommend serious action against him for spoiling the prosecution’s case,” he said.
“I have already conveyed my concerns to the relevant quarters and to my information the officer who gave a favorable statement for Taji Khokhar has been suspended,” he added.

He said the SIC would support the move for stopping Nato supplies.
PST: Pakistan Sunni Tehreek’s Ulema Board has termed the incident a bid of the banned militant outfit to disrupt peace in the country by using the name of Ahle Sunnat.
In a statement the PST clerics said some countries were backing the banned organisation for their vested interests through creating a wave of sectarian killing in Pakistan. “There is no fight between Ahle Tasheeh and Ahle Sunnat, as it is the fight against Pakistan that was sparked by the banned organisation in the name of sectarianism,” a joint statement of the clerics reads.
They demanded of the government to impose a ban on a religious group using name of Ahle Sunnat.
