Dr. Shakeel Afridi is a benefactor, not a traitor
The Pashtun land on both sides of the Durand Line has been devastated by Jihadi-sectarian militants including foreign terrorists like Osama Bin Laden, in collusion with Pakistani military establishment.
Dr. Shakeel Afridi did a great service to the world in general, and the Pashtun people in particular, by helping the US eliminate the Saudi Jihadi-sectarian terrorist Osama Bin Laden.
By ridding Pakistan of the most dangerous Jihadi-sectarian beast, Dr. Afridi has in fact served, not hurt the interests of the people of Pakistan. He deserves to be awarded with a civil gallantry award in recognition of his services in locating world’s most dangerous terrorist who killed thousands of Sunni and Shia Muslims, Christians, Pashtoons, Hazaras, Tajiks and other peoples of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds.
Despite pressure by Pakistan’s military establishment, Government of Pakistan must never try Dr. Afridi for treason. He did a great service to people of Pakistan by eliminating a top leader of the terrorists who have committed crimes of terrorism against people of Pakistan from all religions and ethnicities.
All peace loving around the world who disagree with Al-Qaida ideology must do whatever they can to support the doctor and have him released by the custody of the Pakistani (military) authorities.
We support the following petition for release of the doctor and request our readers to sign it.
After disclosing Afridi’s role in the operation, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in an interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes program that he was concerned over the Pakistani medic’s criminal charge.
“I’m very concerned about what the Pakistanis did with this individual … who in fact helped provide intelligence that was very helpful with regards to this operation,” Panetta said, according to excerpts of the interview.
“He was not in any way treasonous towards Pakistan,” the defense secretary said. “Pakistan and the United States have a common cause here against terrorism … and for them to take this kind of action against somebody who was helping to go after terrorism, I just think is a real mistake on their part.”
Canadian political activist and author on Islamist attitudes, Tarek Fatah, discussed on Twitter “how [the] U.S. abandoned the Pakistani Doc who helped them locate bin Laden.”
“So what exactly is the Pakistani national interest that has been harmed by Dr. Afridi in helping locate the world’s most wanted terrorist on Pakistani soil?” the Pakistan-based Dawn newspaper wrote in an editorial in October 2011.

Dr Shakil Afridi was arrested by Pakistan’s powerful Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency after it discovered he had been recruited by the CIA to run a fake vaccination programme in Abbottabad to try to get DNA samples from the al-Qaida leader’s suspected hideout.
American authorities are trying to rescue the Pakistani doctor, his wife and children, and take them to the United States, according to Pakistani and US officials.
The revelation that Bin Laden was living comfortably in northern Pakistan – and the clandestine operation by US special forces to kill him on 2 May – have pushed ties between Washington and Islamabad to breaking point
The recruitment of Afridi has added to the tensions. The doctor, in his late 40s, is thought to have been detained in late May or early June, and is not thought to have been charged. He is being held for working for a foreign intelligence agency, which can be punishable by the death penalty.
Friends say they last saw him attend the funeral of a distant family member in Peshawar, the provincial capital of the north-west, on 18 May. Afridi worked as the doctor in charge of Khyber, part of the tribal area, on the edge of Peshawar. It is believed that he was snatched by the ISI at Karkhano bazaar, a market for smuggled goods, on his way back home to Peshawar from work in Khyber, that lies between Peshawar and Khyber. He was initially held in custody in Peshawar, but may have been transferred to custody in Islamabad.
From a humble family, Afridi graduated in 1990 from Khyber Medical College, the top medical academy in the north-west of the country. He had been accused of corruption in the past but was cleared of misdoings, according to one person who knows him.
The CIA was never sure that Bin Laden was hiding inside the house in Abbottabad, northern Pakistan. It recruited Afridi, who set up a fake vaccination programme in Abbottabad. It was hoped that this would produce a DNA sample from one of the Bin Laden children. A nurse working for the doctor managed to get inside the compound, though it is not thought that the right DNA was obtained.
The Guardian revelations about the fake CIA vaccine programme made headline news in Pakistan on Tuesday, but government officials offered no comment.

Dr. Shakeel joined health department of North Western Frontier Province-now known as Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa- after getting his medicine degree from Khyber medical college in 1990s. His grandfather had served in British Army and got lands in reward for his services in Multan region of Punjab province, where he moved his family from the tribal area. Shakeel was brought up in Punjab and passed his matriculation exam from Multan but he got himself enrolled in Khyber medical college on quota reserved for students from Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA).
Having secured a job in the North West Dr. Shakeel chose to serve in Khyber agency but he would only prescribe medicines from companies that showered him with gifts, says a medical company representative, who worked in the area from 2000 to 2003.
The doctor also run a private clinic in Jamrood town and conducted several surgeries, though he was not a surgeon and the practice led to departmental action against him, sources said. A nurse in his clinic died in “suspicious and unexplained circumstances” in 2006 and the doctor was investigated for the death, they said.
In 2007 the doctor came in contact with the U.S embassy and would often boast before his friends whenever he was invited to the embassy or U.S. consulate in Peshawar, where he got special welcome, a relative of Shakeel Afridi told Ummat.
Dr. Afridi visited the United States in 2009 along with his wife and three children. On his return he was suddenly promoted to the post of Agency Surgeon in 2010 and the decision shook many as he had earned a bad name in health department, say the sources.
“The appointed was also made by superseding many senior and deserving medical officers.”
It is immediately unclear whether or to what extent the U.S officials used their influence to get Dr. Afridi on that job, but the surprise move is now being viewed with suspicions, the sources add.

Shame on ISI-backed Supreme Court:
A Pakistani government commission investigating the raid on bin Laden said in a statement that it was of the view that: ‘a case of conspiracy against the state of Pakistan and high treason’ should be registered against Dr Afridi on the basis of the evidence it had gathered.
It did not elaborate.
The commission, which interviewed Dr Afridi and the head of the ISI, Lieutenant General Ahmed Shuja Pasha this week, has been tasked with investigating how bin Laden managed to hide in the army town of Abbottabad for up to five years, and the circumstances surrounding the U.S. operation.

what did the doctor do. He only helped the PAK in finding OBL, which their military claimed they did not have any clue.
Did the doctor violate any PAK law? -NO. Is there any law against sending patients samples to outsiders. No. PAK doctors send samples all the time.
Did the doctor commit treason? No. Treason is offense against “legal” state secrets. Is OBL a PAK state secret? Pak says no, hence the doc did not commit treason.
Did the doctor know he was working for CIA ? If yes, then he committed an offense. Most likely, he did not know. Hard to prove.
At the most what the doctor did is unethical and unprofessional conduct in collecting blood samples (it was reported elsewhere as buccal samples) without informed consent. Then again, such things do not exist in PAK , so he did not violate any law either.
The good doctor asks the question: How did OBL come to live in this compound, bring an Yemeni wife(doctor, I might add) and no one in PAK establishment know about it?
That is the question the PAK should be asking every day.
By the way, Panetta’s Interview was recorded weeks earlier and has no connection with recent rocket attack.
John B
One has to ask who the good committed treason against? Is he being hounded because he lead to the death of an asset of PAK – not the elected civilan government but an asset of the military and more to the point the ISI.
Harry
Dr Afridi should be hailed as a Pakistani hero! What he did a super power could not for the last ten years! Yet we treat him like a traitor? Honorable Doctor rid us of a liability, we should be grateful not vengeful.
Arifq
There is no legal charge to bring Dr Afridi to book. He committed no crime and broke no law. In fact he should be given the $ 25 million reward.
A citizen giving information on an illegal immigrant cannot be a crime under any law. The question is why he gave the information on OBL presense to the CIA and not ISI – he obviously knew who were protecting OBL.

A very brave man who should be a national hero, which means he’ll probably be executed. A country that drives away its sole Nobel Prize laureate while glorifying A.Q. Khan and
Aafia Siddiqui is unlikely to appreciate Dr. Afridi.
It is only the issue of $ 25 million between ISI and Dr.Afridi ISI generals want him to withdraw from 25 million and they are ready to release him with full honor…jamat Islami also demanding its share…let us see who gets what…
Generals had held Osama in a safehouse to earn dollars. Dr Afridi robbed them of all that wealth; thats why they hate him.
@ Waris Jatoi….”ummatenglish dot com” is credible news website (or same as rupeenews dot com)??
Where is Haqqani ‘my super hero brigade ‘ when another innocent is facing a treason charges?
As a Pashtun i m ashamed of this Afridi. if he wanted money there could have been other ways ….u can stretch ur imagination.
US citizenship for Dr Shakil Afridi, says congressman

WASHINGTON: A United States (US) Congressman has submitted a bill to the House of Representatives asking to grant US citizenship to Dr Shakil Afridi, the doctor who provided vital help to the US in finding Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad.
The bill submitted by Congressman Dana Rohrabacher on Friday, called for Dr Afridi to be deemed “a naturalized citizen of the United States.”
In his speech in Congress, Rohrabacher, who is also the Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight, said, “Pakistan’s Inquiry Commission on the Abbottabad Operation, the US mission which killed bin Laden, has recommended that Dr Afridi be tried for treason for helping the US. If convicted, he could be executed. My bill would grant him US citizenship and send a direct and powerful message to those in the Pakistani government and military who protected the mastermind of 9/11 for all those years and who are now seeking retribution on those who helped to execute bin Laden.”
Rohrabacher cited media reports that Dr Afridi’s wife, an American citizen of Pakistani origin was also missing. “This bill shows the world that America does not abandon its friends,” adding that 21 members of Congress had endorsed the bill as well.
The bill, which was referred to the Committee on Judiciary, comes after US Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said in an interview last week that Dr Afridi had provided key intelligence that led to the raid in Abbottabad.
Media reports had earlier said that Dr Afridi had organized a polio vaccination campaign in the city for the Central Intelligence Agency, in order to collect DNA sample to prove that the al Qaeda leader was present in the Abbottabad compound.

Dr Shakil Afridi —Farhat Taj
Dr Afridi’s act could not be hidden from the world because the US is directly involved in it. Therefore, a smear campaign has been launched. It depicts the doctor as a dishonest person and a traitor. The aim, it seems, is to absolve the military of any responsibility for bin Laden’s presence in Pakistan for years
A native of Khyber Agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Dr Shakil Afridi has been arrested by the military authorities in Pakistan. He faces charges of treason for his role in locating and killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. Reportedly, he ran a vaccination campaign for the US intelligence agency the CIA in Abbottabad to collect blood samples of the children of Osama bin Laden. The DNA test from the blood samples established the presence of bin Laden in a military area in Abbottabad and subsequently he was killed in the US commando raid in the house where the al Qaeda leader had lived with his family for many years.
Capturing or killing of al Qaeda terrorists is the aim of the UN-mandated US-led war on terror. Pakistan is supposedly a partner in this war. The Pakistani military authorities have not only been killing, capturing and handing al Qaeda militants based in Pakistan to the US but have also been taking pride in doing so. Former dictator Musharraf admits in his book (In the Line of Fire, pg 237) that his government captured and handed over 369 al Qaeda militants to the US. He also writes that Pakistanis received ‘millions of dollars’ as prize money from the CIA for capturing those militants. But none of those Pakistanis ever faced the treason charges that Dr Afridi does today. The reason is not what some people are underscoring in internet blogs and newspapers in Pakistan — that because Dr Afridi’s cooperation with the US led to, what they call, an ‘invasion’ of Pakistan, so he must be tried for treason.
The reason is that his act has torn apart the strategic depth narrative internalised by many in Pakistan due to a constant state-backed propaganda based on outright lies or at best distortion of facts. According to this narrative, the people of FATA are fanatically religious. They have given refuge to al Qaeda militants following their escape from the US bombing in Afghanistan. They have given their daughters and sisters in marriage to foreign al Qaeda militants, who enjoy comfortable hospitality in the area not only under the code of tribal Pashtunwali but also as sons-in-law and brothers-in-law. According to this narrative, Osama bin Laden was never supposed to be discovered in a military area in Pakistan, but in FATA. The tribes in the area were supposed to rise in rage in the event of any harm to Osama bin Laden by the US. Dr Afridi, himself a tribesman from the area, proved exactly the opposite.
Dr Afridi, however, is not the first person from FATA who has exposed the Pakistani military’s control over the Taliban or al Qaeda terrorists, whereby they are used for terrorism in Afghanistan and the ‘unwanted’ among them handed over to the US to prove Pakistan’s ‘performance’ in the war on terror as well as to win the head money placed by the US on terrorists. There are countless more people in the area who have done so before him. But their contributions have never made it to the wider world because there is a strict state control over the flow of information from FATA coupled with a systemic state-sponsored propaganda that distorts facts as well as attributes outright lies to the area, its culture and people. More importantly, many of those who exposed the military control over the militants were eliminated through targeted killings, which had scared the others into silence.
Dr Afridi’s act could not be hidden from the world because the US is directly involved in it. Therefore, a smear campaign has been launched. It depicts the doctor as a dishonest person and a traitor. The aim, it seems, is to absolve the military of any responsibility for bin Laden’s presence in Pakistan for years in the military area and to assassinate Dr Afridi’s character so that the people in Pakistan can never acknowledge his contribution for peace and honour him as a Pashtun hero of Pakistan.
Now there are two important issues at hand. One, Dr Afridi and his family must be saved from the Pakistani military establishment, and two, steps must be taken to ensure he is hailed as he deserves to be: a saviour of peace in the world and son of the Pashtun soil who exposed those who have devastated the Pashtun land with terrorism. Something seems to be happening to ensure the former. US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta has publicly expressed concern about Pakistan’s treatment of Dr Afridi. US Congressman Dana Rohrabacher has announced that he will introduce legislation in the US Congress seeking US citizenship and a Congressional Gold Medal for Dr Shakil Afridi for his contribution in eliminating bin Laden. The US should not abandon Dr Afridi and his family. One would like to hope that the US would manage to save his life and freedom.
Most probably, the latter cannot be ensured by the US because appropriate measures in this regard must be taken indigenously. The PPP-led coalition government of Pakistan would not acknowledge Dr Afridi’s role at the state level because it has no control over Pakistan’s Afghan policy, which remains the exclusive domain of the military establishment. The Pashtun nationalist ANP government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would also not honour him with a gallantry award. The ANP government works under strict constraints imposed on it by the military establishment’s strategic depth policy vis-à-vis Afghanistan. The ANP as a political party has sacrificed hundreds of its leaders, workers as well as their family members for the sake of its Afghan policy. Decorating Afridi with a public honour at this point of time might be politically as well as physically damaging for the ANP and its leaders and workers. As long as the military dominates politics in Pakistan, there is no hope Afridi can be honoured by any government in Pakistan. What is more likely is that he might lose his life and go down in history as a traitor by means of sheer distortion of facts.
The only state authority that should and probably can ensure that Dr Afridi’s contribution to peace in the world in general and the Pashtun land in particular is not lost at the hands of the Pakistani military authorities is the government of Afghanistan. The government and the people of Afghanistan know more than anyone in the world how their country have been devastated by al Qaeda and the proxies of the Pakistani military establishment, the Taliban. This is the reason why Pashtun as well as non-Pashtun public opinion in Afghanistan is anti-Pakistan. By facilitating the killing of Osama bin Laden, Dr Afridi has also done a service to the people of Afghanistan. Moreover, he is a Pashtun — the ethnic group that forms the majority of the Afghan population. The Karzai government should honour this fellow Pashtun with the highest civil award of Afghanistan and take other appropriate means to ensure his contribution to peace in the world in general and cleansing Afghanistan of al Qaeda terrorists in particular, is appreciated in Afghanistan and through Afghan channels in the whole world.

Bin Laden informer: 11 accomplices of Dr Afridi suspended from duties

At least 11 accomplices of Dr Shakil Afridi, who was accused of helping the US track down former al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, were suspended from their duties on Sunday, reported Express News.
The suspended people include a medical officer and some lady health workers. Details of the names’ list is being kept secret, according to the Express News correspondent.
Last year, British newspaper The Guardian reported that the CIA launched a fake vaccination drive in Abbottabad to gather the DNA information of Bin Laden’s family. It said that Khyber Agency Surgeon Dr Afridi, under the pretext of a private polio vaccination campaign, launched a CIA programme to trace the al Qaeda leader in Abbottabad.
Action was initiated against him and some other provincial health department officials for running a fake polio vaccine campaign.

It really doesn’t matter to be honest, the Americans put him in that position of power to lend legitimacy to “Operation Neptune Spear”, images of which they are yet to release, even though Obama was watching them live lol?
If it was really that easy, rest assured it would have been accomplished within the first few weeks of toppling the Taliban, but as more time passes, more people begin to catch on. It’s a never ending game with the fearsome OBL managing to squirm past all the agents on the lookout in every nook and cranny of South Asia and the Middle East (now replaced by yours faithfully Joseph Kony doing the same all over Africa, thus establishing AFRICOM much faster than the Amreekis hoped)
How could one man do what a superpower couldn’t? He didn’t lol, that explains it all. The atlanticist version of events always tries to do this and ends up falling flat on its face. Their stories of heroic struggles are so twisted in fantasy that even their editors have a hard time not making it sound ridiculous to even the most casual of readers. From Venezuela to Libya to Syria to Iran to Pakistan, anything and everything will be done to spin the course of reality to fit the narrative of rogue nations being brought down from within by “heroes” such as Dr. Shakeel Afridi who are willing to take the easy way out in exchange for a life of comfort, fame and money. Too bad he was betrayed by his masters after pledging allegiance to them, they could have whisked him out like Raymond Davis, he’s not a DoD “contractor” or even an American citizen for that matter (surely they could have given him one foreseeing an extradition, no?)
On a parting note, this has nothing to do with being Pro establishment or anti – establishment. Point is, don’t let your hate of the establishment (whoever you think it is, because you offer some fairly contradicting views) translate into love for all forms of American imperialism. Until and unless they don’t offer some conclusive evidence of an OBL being gunned down in that very same precise location, it’s pointless to delve into other aspects of the “OBL” death. I find it astonishing how many people accept many fundamental flaws in the OBL story and yet argue over all the tiny details. So please, for the sake of humanity, stop peddling your pro America bullcrap, this is the age of the internet reformation. People have access to all sides of the story, no amount of fancy words can mask the truth.
Peace.
