We beg you to open the Pandora Box, Mr. CJP – by Imran Qadir Butt

We don't mind this punch anymore

I kept reading and kept on laughing. No, I was not reading any comedy, surprisingly I was merely reading a very serious story quoting one of the most important personality in present day Pakistan.  Yes it was about Mr Chief Justice commenting on case, that he himself termed a day earlier as an important case that had and will continue to have far reaching consequences on Pakistani politics and  governance. But now he is warning us about the serious implications opening up this case could have on Pakistan. I read him observing opening up ZAB’s miss trial would open up Pandora Box of unimaginable consequences. I am surprised what might have happened in those twenty four hours that changed Mr Justice’s outlook on ZAB’s murder trial.
Taking only a cursory look into political history of Pakistan,  one can find on every important juncture of our political history this Pandora Box always denied us an opportunity to change our direction towards open and truly democratic society. Same Pandora Box stopped us investigating day light murder of first Prime Minister Mr. Liaquat Ali Khan. After 1965 defeat at the hands of India we were warned not to analyze failures because it could open up a Pandora Box. West Pakistan forces attacked East Pakistan and butchered hundreds and thousands of Bengalis but we were unable to investigate this mass murder because of same old Pandora Box. We lost to India once again and won Bangladesh in the process but to date no substantive study has been done to investigate dismemberment of Easy Pakistan. Kargil fiasco is the most recent example where same Pandora Box helped us absorbed our anguish and unanswered questions within ourselves. The list is endless and at every crucial turning point we have been denied taking rightful path by people warning us about Pandora Box.
I think now is the time we open this Pandora Box once to see whether its threat is real or it is just a scarecrow. I beg Mr Chief Justice to please let open this Pandora Box as we have lost East Pakistan, two prime ministers and thousands of soldiers and civilians in foolish wars with India and many other imaginary enemies in spite of it. Open it Sir, so that we might be able to save whatever left in Baluchistan. We sacrificed way too much to keep a tight lid on Pandora Box, but it did not stop us making same fatal mistakes again and again. Dear Sirs if you want this society to become truly democratic you have to help us expose those behind the scene ‘holier than thou’ characters who kept on committing same crimes under the false protection of Pandora Box. Perhaps once opened we might be able to learn from our mistakes. You will also agree with me Mr Justice that facing truth makes nations strong. So be brave Mr Justice and let us all face the truth and let those who committed crimes face the masses.
