Can’t wait for Muharram? – by Imran Khan

The Taliban strike again, while Peshawar and other cities in Pakhtunkhwa had been targeted frequently, this time they decided to hit the big cities, i.e. Karachi and Lahore. 11 people have died so far with more than 50 wounded.
An interesting thing to note is the statement of claim from the Taliban, here is how it has been reported by Express Tribune
The statement by Mr. Azam Tariq is something that would make the likes of Imran Khan (PTI) et al say; we told you so.
But a few points to ponder; why is it that for these two coordinated strikes, that were supposedly aimed at “security forces and government property”, the TTP chose the Chehlum of Imam Hussain? If they “regret” the loss of civilian lives then why didnt they just barge into one of the hundreds of police stations or army camps that dot Pakistan. Why a Shia procession specifically?
It is obvious that Mr. Tariq is lying, he by no means will ever “regret” the death of a Shia, so why do the drama then? Why not put an Alhumdulilah about killing Shia Kafirs?
In my opinion, statements such as these are to leverage the efforts of all of those who are presenting the Taliban as freedom fighters. This “regret” would probably be enough for many to declare this as a legitimate reaction to someone else’s war.
But, these attacks signify the inability of the Taliban to coexist with anyone who is theologically different from them. With Shias constituting around 20% of Pakistan’s population, this expression of hate should be enough to convince many about the necessity of containing the Taliban ideology.
But the hindrance to this obvious consensus is provided by baseless explanations that declare these actions as mere reactions. The scary thing is that the Taliban has evolved to leverage these ridiculous explanations. An evolution which is exhibited by this new found “concern” about civilian causalities.
Its also not the case that sectarian violence is a post 9/11 phenomenon, which would magically vanish once the war in Afghanistan is over. In the period between 1989 to 2000, around 1000 Pakistanis died and around 2500 were injured due to sectarian violence. A report by the International Crisis Group, claims that 70% of the deaths related to sectarian violence since 1985, were of Shias.
This expression of “regret” by the Taliban shouldn’t mean anything, but the way the whole debate around the Taliban issue is being carried out, to many out there this is yet another incident to blame on outsiders.

Twin suicide attacks in Pakistan
Shortly after a suicide attack by a teenage boy yesterday in Lahore targeted a procession of Shia Muslims observing the end of the holy month of Muharram, killing up to 13, a second bomber on a motorcycle struck a police van protecting Shia marchers in Karachi, killing up to four (NYT, AP, ET, Geo, AFP, Reuters, AJE, CNN, Daily Times, ABC). A branch of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, Fidayeen-e-Islam run by Qari Hussain Mehsud, claimed responsibility for the Lahore attack, which wounded nearly 80, and a militant spokesman said it was in retaliation for U.S. drone strikes and Pakistani military operations in the tribal areas.

زخم پھر سے ہرے ہوگئے
لاہور بم دھماکہ میں نو سے زیادہ ہلاک اور پچاس کے لگ بھگ زخمی ہوئے
دہشت گردی کے مختلف واقعات میں ہلاک ہونے والے افراد کے رشتہ داروں کا کہنا ہے کہ اردو بازار لاہور میں ہونے والے خودکش حملے نے ان زخموں کو پھر سے ہرا کردیا ہے اور وہ تمام منظر ان کی آنکھوں کے سامنے آگیا جب ان کے اپنے عزیزدہشت گردی کا شکار ہوئے۔
خودکش حلموں کا نشانہ بننے والے افراد کے لواحقین کے بقول دہشت گردی کے کسی بھی نئے واقعہ کے بعد انہیں یوں لگتا ہے کہ ان پر دوبارہ قیامت ٹوٹ پڑی ہے اور ان کا غم تازہ ہوجاتا ہے ۔
لاہور کے علاقے اردو بازار میں خودکش حملے میں گیارہ افراد ہلاک اور ساٹھ سے زائد افراد زخمی ہوئے تھے ۔ ہلاک ہونے والوں میں پولیس اہلکار بھی شامل تھے۔
لاہور میں ون فائیو کی عمارت پر خودکش حملے میں ہلاک ہونے والے بیس سالہ کانسٹبیل عمیر نذیر کے بڑے بھائی ندیم کا کہنا ہے کہ منگل کی رات ہونے والے خودکش حملہ کے بعد انہیں ایسا لگا کہ جیسے ان کا اپنا بھائی اس واقعہ میں ہلاک ہوگیا ہے ۔
میرا چھ سالہ بیٹا اردو بازار میں ہونے والے خودکش حملے کے ٹی وی پر مناظر دیکھ کر جذباتی ہوگیا اور بچے کی آنکھوں میں آنسو آگئے ، بچے کا کہنا تھا کہ وہ دہشت گردوں کو جان سے مار دے گا ۔
ندیم، ایک شہری
بی بی سی کے نامہ نگار عبادالحق سے بات کرتے ہوئے ندیم نے بتایا کہ اردو بازار میں ہونے والے خودکش حملے نے ان کے زخم ہرے کردیئے ہیں کیونکہ دہشت گردی کے ہر واقعہ کے بعد وہی منظر آنکھوں کے سامنے آجاتا ہے جب ان کا بھائی خودکش حملے میں ہلاک ہوا تھا اور انہوں یوں لگتا ہے کہ ان کا بھائی مرگیا ہے ۔
ان کا کہنا ہے کہ لاہور میں ہونے والے دہشت گردی کے واقعہ کے بعد ان کے گھر کا ماحول سوگوار ہوگیا تھا اور یوں لگا کہ جیسے قیامت آگئی ہو۔
ندیم نے بتایا کہ ان کا چھ سالہ بیٹا اردو بازار میں ہونے والے خودکش حملے کے ٹی وی پر مناظر دیکھ کر جذباتی ہوگیا اور بچے کی آنکھوں میں آنسو آگئے ۔ ان کے بقول ان کے بچے کا کہنا تھا کہ وہ دہشت گردوں کو جان سے مار دے گا ۔
دہشت گردی کے واقعہ میں ہلاک ہونے والے محمد بشیر کی بیوہ نازیہ کا کہنا ہے کہ وہ اس لمحے کو کبھی نہیں بھول سکتیں جب انہیں اپنے شوہر کی ہلاکت کی اطلاع ملی تھی اور اسی لیے جب انہیں کسی خودکش حملہ کے بارے میں معلوم ہوتا ہے تو دل سے یہ ہی بات نکلتی ہے کہ پتا نہیں آج کتنے بچے یتم ہونگے اور کتنی عورتیں بیواؤں ۔
دہشت گردی کا نشانہ بننے والے محمد بشیر کی بیوہ کا کہنا ہے کہ ان کےبچے جب بھی دہشت گردی کے واقعہ کی خبر سنتے ہیں تو اپنے باپ کو یاد کرتے ہیں ۔انہوں نے بتایا کہ ٹی وی پر خودکش حملہ میں مرنے والوں کو دیکھ ان کے بچے یہ پوچھتے ہیں کہ ْ ْ مما ہمارے ساتھ بھی ایسا ہوا تھا ، ہمارے ابو بھی گھر سے گئے تھے اور پھر واپس نہیں آئے ۔
نازیہ بشیر کا کہناہے کہ ان کے بچے جب ٹی وی پر دہشت گردی کےواقعہ میں مرنے والے افراد کے بچوں کو روتا دیکھتے ہیں تو وہ اپنے بچوں کی آنکھوں میں وہ سب دیکھتی ہیں جو سانحہ سے گزرنے والی کوئی خاتون اپنے بچوں کی آنکھوں میں دیکھتی ہے ۔
کانسٹیبل عیمر کے بھائی ندیم کا کہنا ہے کہ دہشت گردوں کو کڑی سے کڑی سزا دی جائے تاکہ کسی کو دہشت گردی کرنے کی جرات نہ ہو ۔
