(CNN) — A suicide bomb car bomb killed at least nine (update: 15) people in northwest Pakistan on Friday, police said, also leaving 28 others injured.
The bomb hit the main gate of the Al-Zuhra hospital and maternity center in Pass Kalay, a town in the district of Hangu, said Abdul Rashid Khan, the police chief in Hangu. The hospital and mosque cater to Shia patients and worshippers.
The blast damaged the mosque, two houses and two vehicles, he said.
At least two children were killed.
Hangu sits next to Pakistan’s tribal region and is part of a region plagued by sectarian violence by extremist Deobandis and Wahhabis (Taliban / Sipah-e-Sahaba) against Shia Muslims.
The attack happened on the second day of Muhharam, one of the holiest days on the Islamic calendar, when violence and fighting is prohibited.
At least 15 people were killed and over 20 others were injured on Friday when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into an under-construction building of a hospital in northwest Pakistan, a media report said.
The commissioner of Kohat, Khalid Khan Umarzai confirmed “the suicide vehicle blast”, adding that “the authorities had received threats”.
On Wednesday, a suicide blast at a bus stand in Kohat city, a few kilometers away from Hangu, killed 16 people and injured more than 20.
Investigators said the blast, which damaged the hospital building, was a sectarian attack.
It comes after the start of the Islamic holy month of Muharram, which is especially important for Shias.
English-language TV channel Express 24/7 reported that a suicide attacker had rammed an explosive-laden vehicle into the hospital.
“The bomber blew up his car at the hospital gate,” local police chief Abdul Rashid told news agency AFP.
These people were killed because of their faith.
According to extremist Deobandis and Wahhabis, Shias are a deviant version of Islam and are in fact infidels (kafir) hence worthy to be attacked and killed.

Suicide attack at Shia hospital in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province kills at least 15 and wounds several dozen.
A suicide bomber has blown up a trailer packed with explosives outside a hospital in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 15 people and wounding several dozen, police said.
The bombing on Friday partially damaged a Shia hospital that was under construction in the Pass Kili area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province’s Hangu district.
“It was a tractor with a trailer a carrying 250 kilograms of explosives hidden underneath materials for construction work at the hospital,” Fazal Naeem, Hangu police spokesman, told AFP news agency.
The bomber detonated the explosives at the gate of the hospital, punching a large crater in the ground and partially damaging a nearby mosque run by the same private Shia Muslim trust that operates the hospital, local officials said.
The attack comes just a day after the start of the holy month of Muharram, which is especially important for Shias.
The attack came just two days after a teenage suicide bomber killed 17 people at a busy market in the garrison town of Kohat, which neighbours Hangu.

A Taliban suicide bomber killed 15 people in an attack today at a hospital in Pakistan’s insurgency-infested northwest.
The suicide bomber detonated his car packed with explosives at a hospital in the district of Hangu in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The target of the attack is not yet clear, but the Taliban and the allied Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which serves as street muscle for al Qaeda in Pakistan, have stepped up suicide attacks against government officials, anti-Taliban tribes, and Shia Muslims over the past week. The district of Hangu has a sizable Shia population.
The Taliban and Lashkar-e-JhangvI have carried out three other suicide attacks since Dec. 6. On Dec. 8, a Taliban suicide bomber struck a bus carrying Shia refugees attempting to return to their homes in the tribal agency of Arakzai. The attack killed 18 civilians.
On Dec. 7, a suicide bomber attacked the chief minister of the southwestern province of Baluchistan, wounding 10 people. The al Qaeda-linked Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed credit for the attack.
On Dec. 6, a pair of Taliban suicide bombers killed 50 people, including government officials, tribal leaders, security personnel, and two journalists, in an attack on a meeting of anti-Taliban tribal leaders in Mohmand. Omar Khalid, the leader of the Taliban in Mohmand, claimed the attack and said such strikes would continue as long as tribal leaders work with the government.

Peshawar: At least 17 people were killed and 20 others injured on Friday when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden vehicle into a hospital being built by the minority Shia community in Pakistan’s restive northwest Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
The Hazara Hospital in Hangu town collapsed following the blast and several persons were buried under the rubble, witnesses said.
Rescue workers and local residents pulled bodies and the injured out of debris.
Seventeen people were killed and 20 others injured in the attack, officials said. Several nearby buildings were damaged by the powerful blast.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the lack of heavy machinery and a power outage caused by the explosion.
Kohat Commissioner Khalid Khan said the bomber had targeted the hospital.
Hangu is located near Kohat, where a suicide bomber struck a crowded bus terminal on Wednesday, killing 19 people and injuring over 30 others.
Sources said the minority Shia community was also the target of Wednesdays attack.

15 killed in Hangu hospital suicide attack

HANGU: Fifteen people, including three women and two policemen, were killed and 16 others sustained injuries when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-packed tractor-trolley into the walls of the Al-Zohra Trust Hospital here at Paas Killay on Friday evening, official sources said.
Commissioner Kohat Division Khalid Khan Umarzai said that 15 people had been killed in the attack. However, subsequent unofficial reports put the death toll at 17. Earlier, sources in the office of the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Kohat Range, Masood Khan Afridi, said 11 people had been killed in the blast. They said the blast was caused by an explosive-laden vehicle parked near the main entrance of the hospital.
According to sources, a portion of the hospital, meant for treatment of poor people from the Shia community in the area, was under construction. Eyewitnesses said a young man, who from his appearance seemed to be around 18-year-old, drove the tractor-trolley into the wall of the hospital, triggering a deafening explosion at around 4:30 pm. The blast was so huge that it destroyed 10 houses and demolished half portion of the hospital. Six nearby houses and eight shops were also badly damaged along with the hospital building.
Some of the dead were identified as Khalid, Muhammad Ali, Waqar Hussain, Hikmat Ali, Zohra Bibi, Bibi Maryam and Saleem Bibi. The injured included Faizan Ali, Khalique Raza, Wajid Ali, Jaffar, Samin, Asghar, Tufail Muhammad, Ikhtiar Ali, Arsalan, Wahabul Hassan, Mohib Ali, Asghar Hussain, Gulfam Hussain, Ali Asghar and police constable Dildar Hussain.
The injured were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Hangu. The bomb disposal squad officials said that 400 kilogram explosives were used in the attack. They explained that the explosion caused a crater that was 15 feet wide and 12 feet deep. The police sources said the headless body of the bomber had been retrieved and shifted to hospital for investigations.
Meanwhile, the Shia community leader in Hangu, Syed Jawad Hussain, condemned the attack on the hospital and termed it an abominable act. He claimed only nine persons had been killed in the blast. He said such tactics could not prevent them from taking out their proposed mourning rallies during Muharram in Hangu district.
Another Shia community leader Shireen Ali Shah said they had informed the local administration about the likely terror attacks on their Imambargahs and hospitals but no security measures were taken to protect them. He alleged the blast took place due to the negligence on the part of the administration.
After the incident, the district administration enforced an unannounced curfew in Hangu and no one was allowed to enter the District Headquarters Hospital where most of the wounded were hospitalised and the surrounding areas to prevent further harm. The authorities erected barbed wires outside important government installations.
Muharram is often a precarious time in Hangu and the adjoining Kohat district and Kurram and Orakzai tribal agencies as sectarian tensions flare up.
Meanwhile, Lashkar-i-Jhangvi Al Alami spokesperson Abu Mansoor claimed responsibility for the suicide attack on the Al-Zohra Trust Hospital, saying that they would continue attacking the Shia community in Hangu district and would not let them take out their processions during Muharram.

DAWN EDITORIAL: Hangu Attack
WITH Ashura less than a week away, it is alarming that two sectarian attacks in Muharram have already taken place in the country. At least 10 people were killed when a suspected suicide bomber rammed a tractor-trolley full of hundreds of kilograms of explosives into the boundary wall of a hospital in Hangu on Friday. The blast followed close on the heels of an attack on a bus in Kohat`s Tirah bazaar on Wednesday. A number of people were killed in that incident. That sectarian motives were behind the attacks is apparent as the Hangu hospital is run by a Shia trust, while many of the passengers killed in the Kohat attack also belonged to the Shia community. The Hangu attack has been claimed by the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi Al Almi while the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the Kohat blast. It is evident that militant groups are not resting easy during Muharram and security forces need to swing into overdrive.
Firstly, the nature of the beast must be clear. Lashkar-i-Jhangvi Al Almi has recently raised its profile, being one of the claimants to the attack on the Balochistan chief minister. Is this entity a mutated form of the Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, or a new outfit altogether? The intelligence apparatus needs to identify and dismantle this emerging threat to public safety before it turns into an uncontrollable ogre like so many before it. Kohat, Hangu and the surrounding regions have long suffered from the twin plague of militancy and sectarianism. Concrete action is required here before the nexus between jihadi and sectarian militants becomes too unwieldy to handle. The Kohat division commissioner has pointed towards Orakzai Agency — where the army is currently engaged with militants — saying it has consistently been the source of attacks on mourning processions. Hence there needs to be extra vigilance in the days to come. Increased troop deployment and better intelligence-gathering are required to secure the aforementioned areas as well as large cities, which have been hit hard in the past.
Concerning the ulema`s promises about maintaining harmony during Muharram, clearly militants don`t care about what traditional scholars have to say. Therefore the security forces need to deal with the militants as terrorists — not misguided religious foot soldiers. The ulema also need to unambiguously condemn suicide bombings. The mainstream religious parties have been very disappointing on this count, with some remaining conspicuously silent and others hiding behind the bogey that `no Muslim can do this`. Indeed, it is a tough task to secure large Muharram gatherings. But complacency is not an option. All efforts need to be made to safeguard lives.
