Police to question Gul, Elahi and Ijaz Shah
KARACHI: Police will question two former intelligence chiefs and a former Punjab chief minister over suicide blasts at a rally held in Karachi’s Karsaz area last year to welcome Benazir Bhutto back to Pakistan, said CCPO Waseem Ahmed on Friday.
Former Intelligence Bureau director general Ijaz Shah, former Inter-Services Intelligence director general Hameed Gul and then Punjab chief minister Pervaiz Elahi are the three men who will be questioned, the CCPO said.
The investigation is taking place following a new first information report (FIR) registered with the Buhadarabad Police Station on the basis of a statement by Benazir Bhutto in which she had named the three men as a danger to her life, he added.
Benazir Butto had survived the suicide attack on October 18 that had killed around 140 people and injured hundreds more, but was assassinated in another suicide attack in Rawalpindi on December 27 after addressing an election rally.
Police had initially refused to entertain Bhutto’s allegations but are now doing so after a court order, said Sohail Chattha, a senior police official. agencies (Daily Times)
…….
Brigadier (retd) Ijaz Shah is the former Director of Intelligence Bureau, and a long-term close associate of Pervez Musharraf, and a former Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) official. He resigned as the IB chief on 17 March 2008. Appointed in 2004, the IB chief became a controversial personality and he was accused of using his department for political victimisation and for undermining the judiciary. In 2004, Musharraf’s attempt to appoint Ijaz Shah as High Commissioner to Australia was rejected in a highly unusual move by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs department.
Role in Benazir’s Assassination Attempt
Days after the 2007 Karachi bombings, Benazir Bhutto in a letter to President Musharaf written on 16 October 2007 named Ijaz Shah as one of the four persons including the then chief minister of Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, the then chief minister of Sindh Arbab Ghulam Rahim, and the former ISI chief Hamid Gul she suspected were behind the attacks.

…….
Lieutenant General Hamid Gul is a retired Pakistani general notorious for heading the Inter-Services Intelligence, Pakistani intelligence agency, after the Soviet-Afghan War, and for instigating the Kashmir insurgency in 1989 with the support of mujahideen that fought in the Soviet-Afghan war.
Hamid Gul served as the director general of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence during 1987-89, mainly in the time when Benazir Bhutto was Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was instrumental in the anti-Soviet support of the mujahideen in the Afghanistan War of 1979–89, a pivotal time during the Cold War. He also was a vehement supporter of the Kashmir insurgency against India.
During his tenure as ISI chief in 1988, General Gul successfully gathered right-wing politicians and helped them create Islami Jamhoori Ittehad, a religio-political conservative coalition (led by Nawaz Sharif) against the left-leaning liberal Pakistan Peoples Party. He has recently acknowledged this fact in various interviews and for this he was harshly rebuked in one of editorials of a major Pakistani newspaper, which asked the general to apologize first to the PPP for having done the sordid deed and after that, apologizing for lack of wits because the IJI could not maintain its two-thirds majority for long.
According to Zahid Hussain, in his book Frontline Pakistan, Lt. Gen. Hamid Gul and former Army chief General Mirza Aslam Beg were part of the 9 January 2001 Darul Uloom Haqqania Islamic conference held near Peshawar, which was also attended by 300 leaders representing various radical Islamic groups. The meeting declared it a religious duty of Muslims all over the world to protect the Taliban government, and the Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden it was hosting, whom they considered as a ‘great Muslim warrior. [Frontline Pakistan: The Struggle with Militant Islam by Zahid Hussain, Columbia University Press, 2007, page 81-82.]
Days after the 2007 Karachi bombings, Benazir Bhutto in a letter to President Musharaf written on 16 October 2007 named Hamid Gul as one of the four persons including the current Intelligence Bureau (IB) Chief Ijaz Shah, the then chief minister of Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, then then chief minister of Sindh Arbab Ghulam Rahim, she suspected were behind the attacks. Gul responded furiously to these claims. He was arrested on November 4 in Islamabad during President Pervez Musharraf’s declared state of emergency.

Hameed Gul to be declared a terrorist soon by the United Nations
The News Reports:
A US secret document has declared ISI former chief, General Hameed Gul maintaining links with the Taliban and Al Qaeda network besides being involved in arranging financial assistance to them.
The two-page unsigned document had already been provided to the government. Sources on the condition of anonymity told that Hameed Gul has been blamed for arranging financial assistance to the criminal groups operating in Kabul beside he has been involved in recruiting the youths from seminaries and giving them training in subversion, who allegedly launch assaults on the Allied Forces with high-tech weapons.
Hameed Gul is one of the five former ISI officials, whose names Washington has recommended to the UN Security Council for their inclusion in the list of international terrorists. Earlier, US government Deputy spokesperson had denied sending any such list to the UN, while Hameed Gul has termed this report ridiculous.

if there is substantial evidence against Gul for his involvement in terrorist activities, he should be handed over to international agency and also should ensure that he gets a fair trial by putting up conditions. We can negotiate conditions and we should.
At the same time, I think the idea that Gul is a Saint is absurd. He was nominated by BB before her return to Pakistan as someone who wanted to kill her. And now once she is not around, he can attribute any lies to her. More so, in an interview to Herald, she mentioned that Gul was the mastermind behind the ouster of her government and also dropped hint that it was people in that nexus who planned murder of her brother.

Hand over Hameed Gull or any other, These generals have served USA in 1980’s like nobody else.
The Afghan Jihad was not for Pakistan it was for USA and Regan’s Administration.
What ever we are going through is the result of our own deeds. Our interference in Afghanistan since 1979 till date has finally back fired in 2003/04 and still going on.
ISI is not involved in Mumbai incidents but because of past and because American know too much about us are the reasons of new campaign against ISI.
Pakistan has every right to defend its land and people and thus we need professional and committed intelligence agency who should do it’s job to defend not to interfere in local politics.

How could we deny USA now? when we have accepted that there are some elements in ISI who support terrorists publicly non other then Mr. Musharaf then in uniform on his visit to UN in 2006.
We either should hand over Hameed Gull or ask US to return all other Pakistanis we handed over.

Hamid Gul wants to fulfill the dream of his master Zia. I disagree to hand hime over to any other country but for sure he deserve to be tried in side the country. His crime list is very long.
He deserve to be sent into jail for the crime of using Mehran Bank money for making anti-PPP alliance IJI. He shamelessly admitted that crime and it is on record that he presided over the the firts IJI meeting as head of ISI. He is a shameless hypocrite and responsible for Pakistan to come to this stage.
Pakistan has very limited choices left. Either we have o control these fanatics or else we r doomed as a nation.
I disagree that Mush is gorbachev of Pakistan. He was in fact continuing the policy of Zia. It was Zia who divided this nation beyond repair and it was he who made Pakistan army a ‘fee for service’ agency for USA. So the real gorbachev is Zia. I hope the democratically elected government can do some damage control but hopes are very dim.

It’s funny to see the complete disregard of hamid gul’s crimes, especially against pukhtuns by people here. Doesn’t surprise me that due to ego and power issues, some want to continue the perpetual war in pakhtunkhwa while being paid money by US to fight this same war. Soon US and India will have had enough and will strike at the real masterminds of talibans.
The theykedaars of pakistan care more about money than innocent lives of people.

Gen (R) Hamid Gul has categorically stated that he and his family were willing to appear before any independent investigator, and I for one, will accept his word. So what is the fuss about? The man has the right to defend himself.
Benazir was assassinated because she was too close to the US and not because she was a Democrat. Democrat she was not, demagogue she was. Corrupt certainly she was. After all, it was not general Hamid Gul but the UN had stated that Benazir had bribed Saddam Hussain in the oil for food scandal.
please remember, that everything that glitters is not gold.

It is not wise to accuse Gen (R) Hamid Gul for Ms. Benazir’s murder as former President Musharaf was accused by Ms. Benazir for her murder just two days berfore her assassination in a suicide attack. Further, Gen Hamid Gul would not have benefited from Benazir’s murder and he was long ago retired from army and we all know that a retired army officer has no powers for executing such attacks

instead of wasting time on this FIR, the PPP government must restore CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry and request him to investigate the political abuse of ISI by morons Hameed Gul and Aslam Beg.

If you wish to hide your identity, post with a pseudonym but don’t select the ‘anonymous’ option.
Moreover, instead of sloganeering you should come up with some logical arguments in support of Gen. Hameed Gul (the god father of Talibans)!
