Do not make IK your scapegoat -by Zain Gardezi
“Shame on you, Mr. Khan”, read the title of an article of a popular English daily.
“TALIBAN Khan is back”, was the starting line of a piece by a member of editorial staff of another English daily. Yes with caps.
“So Imran Khan wants to negotiate with the people who kill little girls for their desire for education”, screamed (read: tweeted) some of Malala’s well wishers after the attack on her.
Of course they were not using the incident to vent their anger and frustration for personal reasons. It is very reasonable to blame Imran Khan because obviously he has been advocating a ban on women education and ordering Taliban to attack little girls for years. Isn’t he? Never mind that he is the founder of one of the internationally recognized colleges of our country, located in a relatively small city.
Seriously!
You would think Imran Khan had personally shot the girl and put the picture of himself holding on his twitter account if you read some of the ‘opinions’ expressed.
Everyone loves to have a scapegoat i.e that one person who can be blamed for all the wrongs that happen to us because it helps us avoid figuring out the actual problem or to help avoid the real culprits.
‘Bomb attack in Pakistan?’ Blame India. ‘Bomb attack in India?’ Blame ISI.
‘Increase in sectarian violence?’ Blame Jews for spreading the hatred among the Muslim Ummah, which was living very happily otherwise.
‘Your children don’t listen to you?’ Blame Amreeka and maghribi rivayaat (whatever that is).
Even Taliban use this ploy effectively and blame all of their motivations on operation of Lal Masjid. Similarly, the elites have found Khan as an easy scapegoat for
all the wrongs that have plagued this country even though the guy has yet to hold any actual power. Khan is an easy prey because the only thing one has to worry about afterwards is the amount of hate mail one receives.
And considering that many pseudo intellectuals think that amount of hate mail is directly proportional to their own IQ, it actually is a bonus.
He is easy because blaming him will excuse them from speaking openly about the real culprits.
Or is it because Imran Khan openly speaks what he believes in instead of playing the game like PML-N which covertly makes alliances with extremist organizations for a couple of petty NA seats? Whose law minister has even participated in rallies of these organizations despite their links to Lashkar e Jhangvi which is responsible for sectarian violence from Punjab to Baluchistan? And yet ‘opinion makers’ of editorial pages only seem to find Imran Khan as a hypocrite. I must sue Oxford dictionary publishers and all my English teachers for feeding me the wrong definition of hypocrite all these years.
If a leader of a popular party can be called TALIBAN KHAN by a member of editorial staff in opinion pages may we also write ‘Shahbaz Sharif Jhangvi’?
To put it on record let me say I do not agree with Khan’s idea of negotiations with the Taliban. But is he the only one doing it? PPP information minister Mr. Kaira even went on to say government would support if Khan negotiates with Taliban. Apparently he also suggested Nawaz Sharif should negotiate with Baluch leaders.
One wonders why have people voted for PPP then if every one else is supposed to do their job? So, why no article with the title ‘Shame on you Mr. Kaira’?
If it is about Imran Khan saying that there are different types of Taliban groups who need to be identified and separated, than one only needs to be looking at what Rehman Malik has been smoking for the last few days because that is exactly what he has been saying.
Lot of issue has been made (and rightly so) about Imran Khan’s statement in Talat Hussain’s interview where he showed reservation over big statements against Taliban over the safety of his workers in FATA. But one must ask whether any other politician even has made this little statement even? Even the parliament resolution did not mention Taliban by name. Why not write a piece ‘Shame on our whole Parliament’?
I would double dare any opinion maker to write an article titled ‘Shame-on-He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named’ over the killings of mere bystanders by political goons just because their leader was insulted by a member of another party?
Or is it because authors of elitist mindset feel guilty over keeping on voting for same parties again and again and their parties producing zero results?
Guilt is a very undesirable feeling to have. We do not wish to take any blame for ourselves or for those whom we helped in any sort of way. For that we tend to deflect our guilt on a scapegoat.
Stop using Imran Khan’s name for personal fame or because you want to subdue your own guilt. Perhaps ‘Shame on us all’ should be the next appropriate
title.
Awesome! Well said! I hate all these hypocrites attacking IK. Probably because thye are on PPP-PMLN and American payroll. Btw, thats not a conspiracy theory but a fact that the Obama Admin invested 50 million dollars in Pak Media and we all know PPP-PMLN have lots of money for our media as well.
What a piece of crap. Taliban Khan is perhaps the most pernicious thing to have happened to this country since the rise of that paragon of hypocrisy and duplicity known as Hazrat Zia-ul-Haq. He is patently naïve; is intellectually bankrupt; sees the world in black and white; over-simplifies issues that are highly complex with a gusto that is sickening; has no sense of the history of the world and the history of the region he lives in; and, to cap it all, is an intransigent, foolish, irrational, dyed-in-the-wool reactionary. He is Mulla Hameed Gul, Mulla Munawar, Hazrat Zaid Hamid, Shaikhani Samia Raheel Qazi all rolled into one. What really makes my stomach churn is the fact that this nincompoop actually believes in the stinking, shitty drivel that comes out of his mouth every day.
There is no doubt that like Hameed Gul, Zaid Hamid and Mullah Munawar Hassan, Taliban Khan is also a certifiable lunatic. But make no mistake: he is way more dangerous. These morons, who are also Taliban Khan’s mentors, have their own narrow constituencies and their influence on the majority of Pakistanis is minimal. But what Taliban Khan says means a lot to the common Pakistanis who listen to him without realizing that he is basically a representative of the bloody right wing and is vigorously pushing their agenda. He is forcing the Pakistani upper middle and middle classes to shoot themselves in the foot. He is making it easy for the mullahs to take over and decimate Pakistan or whatever is left of it. It is because of these facts that we need to condemn him in the strongest possible terms. No one is making him a scapegoat; more and more people are becoming aware of his real motives. We don’t need another Zia in our midst. Shame on you Taliban Khan and shame on us for not saying shame on you. Yes, seriously.
@saqib: LOL , your ranting shows just how confused IK’s critics are. They dont even know who he is, and they dont even know what he does or actually says. 99% of IK critics are just lunatics trying to impose themselves on public opinion.
IK should learn from Altaf Hussain,Asfander Yar and Hamid Karzia how to take a clear stand and name TALIBAN in capital letter. If these brave Leaders are not afraid about safety of themselves and their supporters why is IK so worried. It proves that as the only brother od several sister he is a SISSY appeasing the biggest Gunda of the Region Taliban. ANP and MQM has lost hundred of workers at the hand of TALIBAN but yet not only their Top Leadership but its Rank and File and speaking and demonstrating against a force which wants to shut our 52% population at home and deny us Workforce. Which will never allow us to come out of poverty trap.IK must read my articles on the Pakhtun and Regional peace on my website http://www.tariquekj.com.One link is

@Tarique Khan Javed your ignorance truly manifests itself in your post..People like you are the reason this country has been lurking in depths of darkness for decades!
Please for the love of God think or do some research before you make a comment..Its people like you who simply lack the ability to formulate a sound opinion which makes you feed on inaccurate information..
So let me start by three BRAVE souls you mention in your post..For your information Mr Wali resides in Dubai, how brave of him to condemn or call Taliban by name oceans away under protection!..Whats even worse is that he is responsible for the deaths his party workers while he enjoys his time in the middle eastern Las Vegas!
Lets not forget Mr Bhai! The bravest of them all! How hard is it to condemn the Taliban from England? That too under the the British security? Name one MQM worker who was killed by Taliban? Please correct you facts! All MQM worker that have been killed over the past decade have been either over political or racial conflicts..MQM itself is a modern day cosmopolitan Taliban if you know what i mean..
Hamid Karzai is protected by the Nato and Afghan Armed Froces and since he is fighting the Taliban why would he hesitate in condemning them by name?
In order to defeat an enemy you need to understand the enemy! That is what Imran has been stating for the past ten years but all you can think of is he is sissy! I wonder why he roams around in Islamabad with only a driver?
@Tarique Khan…lol..ALtaf Hussain may have killed more people in Karachi than TTP in whole Pakistan and you are appreciating him for simple condemnation..
great analysis .Nowadays there is a lot propaganda about IK by fake liberals and yellow journalists
@Saqib…..lovely analysis. I particularly enjoyed these gems:
“He is patently naïve; is intellectually bankrupt; sees the world in black and white; over-simplifies issues that are highly complex with a gusto that is sickening; has no sense of the history of the world and the history of the region he lives in; and, to cap it all, is an intransigent, foolish, irrational, dyed-in-the-wool reactionary. He is Mulla Hameed Gul, Mulla Munawar, Hazrat Zaid Hamid, Shaikhani Samia Raheel Qazi all rolled into one.”
“He is forcing the Pakistani upper middle and middle classes to shoot themselves in the foot. He is making it easy for the mullahs to take over and decimate Pakistan or whatever is left of it.”
Very well written.
@Tarique Khan Javed: Are you so ignorant and naive or pretend to be?
Wasn’t it was Asfandiyar who fled in Halicapter to Islamabad and then to Birmingham after a suicide attack and never been back to his constituency yet?
Or Isn’t it Altaf who is residing in London and giving such statement and his gangsters are killing people in Karachi?
Or Isn’t it Karzai for whom the foolproof security is provided by Americans and who even got toilet after the permission from Americans.
Revise your knowledge before giving such idiotic statement.

IK should read my linked article and correct his vision on FATA and Taliban or he will waste his life.
People of FATA need to be made part of Pakistan after expelling Taliban. They have been begging for this long.
FATA is tamed and must be fully absorbed
By Tarique Khan Javed,
President, Overseas Pakistani Investors Forum
Dated 29th Jan 2012
From 23rd till 27th Jan 2012, I was in and around Waziristan to check what was going on.
HOT MILITARY ZONE:
From Dere Ismail Khan I managed to reach WANA (184 KM away) the capital of SOUTH WAZIRISTAN (SW) after negotiating 20 Check Posts. As we entered the road leading to TANK substantial army movement was visible and checking started. Army, FC, Police, and Local militias were involved in thorough check of any one going in or coming back. NIC was demanded at every point and other questions asked. At three occasion passengers were asked to disembark and walk a distance to individually scan each passenger. This was quite humiliating but Waziries accepted it without any protest. (Wazir tribe which dominates Waziristan, have entered a deal with Government and now accept Government writ without protest) Two of my fellow passengers were denied entry by the South Waziristan Scout as they did not posses proper documents.
PLIGHT OF MAHSOUD TRIBE:
At that point where SW started I noticed a large number of make shift house on a barren plane. I was told that it was meant for MAHSOUDs who were still fighting. Those trying to get out of the completely blocked areas of MAHSODS home land are housed here. Later I heard painful tales of suffering of common MAHSOUD tribesman. They blame Taliban for their miseries and hope that Government will be easing their difficulty by relaxing the blockade. There resistance seems to have died down.
GOMAL ZAM DAM:
As we drove along the river bank we came across a massive barrier in the form of a very high mountain. The road on this steep climb looked like a cone and tested the power of vehicles fully. At top was the pleasant surprise of Chinese built power generating DAM called GOMAL ZAM. The view was fantastic as held water of massive quantity lay way below were we stood. Implying that a very large quantity of Water will be stored at this point and than allowed to fall a great distance turning many tribunes.
WANA under full control and peaceful:
Rest of the drive to TANNIE was normal as we came down from the peak of DAM site. TANNIE is a narrow but extended valley stretching towards BALOCHISTAN. Seventeen kilometer from this point was WANA which is a much larger valley.
The street and Bazaar was full of mud as it had rained and snow was melting. Mountains were covered with thin layer of snow and as sun shone on them they looked magnificent. There were number of Plaza with hotels. I checked in Shaheen for Rs 150. The room had a clean attached bath arrangement for 3 persons to sleep. It had no heating so even with two blankets, sleeping was difficult.
The traditional Restaurant with a heating system served good food. When I protested against no heating system in rooms, I was offered NASWAR (the tobacco based intoxicant) which is widely used by the locals, which not only keeps them HIGH but also very warm like Vodka or Whisky.
A POOR AND BORING PLACE:
The market was quite extended and the business seemed good. However I noticed the absence of Music shops as well as TV shops, while Mobile phone shops were few. Only MOBILINK worked with a weak signal. Some houses had PTV antennas but I did not see any Dish antenna any where. These things are discouraged by the ELDERS ruling the AREA.
At the end of the market lay the massive Military base built by the British in Eighteenth Century, but vacated in 1947, in return of the favour to support formation of Pakistan by the FATA elders. Three other Cantonments which were vacated as part of the deal were TANK, JANDOLA and RAZMAK.
Between the market and Base; a road to the left lead to the main residential Area. There was a very large compound with mud walls some 15 feet high. An impressive Mosque was visible from out side but I could not find any entry point. Houses around the compound were not so big and were all made of MUD indicating the poverty of the Area. Beyond the residential Area there were small farms in a rolling country side. The ice covered mountains beyond the farms was source of water as melted water formed small streams. A cone shaped hill with a watch tower on top formed a unique scene.
A walk beyond the main market on the right side of the road also revealed clusters of even poorer villages all with mud house and Kunda style electricity ( no one pays an bill here) supply. With wires hosted on bamboo poles. Few house had small PTV antennas on top. Over all this was a very poor place.
SCIENTIFIC BORDERS AND EASE OF CONTROL:
Beyond the ring of mountains around WANA, I could see very tall mountains with snow on top. I was told these white mountains formed the border with Afghanistan some 60 KM from WANA. Britishers choose to have scientific borders rather than ethnic. They felt it would be easier to protect. I was told that there were only two openings in these wall like mountains and thus can be easily controlled.
Since independence till 2010, Government of Pakistan had no writ on the seven FEDERALLY ADMINISTERED TRIBAL AREAS (FATA). North and South Waziristan occupies 60pc area of FATA. Other five Agencies namely KHURRAM, ORAKZIA, KHAYBER, MOHMAND and BAJOUR are small in comparison, as they do not have the depth which Waziristan has. This is the reason why TANK, WANA, JANDOLA and RAZMAK were chosen as site for cantonments all within Waziristan.
With the help of these bases supported by large cantonments at Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Peshawar, entire FATA was controlled effectively. After vacating these four bases a huge security gap was created which in my opinion was one of the biggest we committed as a Nation. 9/11 can be seen as a direct result of this blunder.
EPI CENTER OF GLOBAL CRIME:
FATA became a safe heaven of all kind of illegal activities be it ARMS and DRUG trade, Kidnapping and Extortion. It was chosen by Al Qaeda as their base because no such place existed in the World where they could any thing they wanted without coming under scrutiny of a responsible STATE. After 9/11 entire Al Qaeda Leadership and fighters took refuge in FATA and lived happily doing their occasional terrorist activities.
RAH E NIJAT CONCLUDING SOON:
In 2004 ARMY tried to enter the Area but was repulsed; instead deals were made with tribes to evict foreigners but were largely ignored.
Pakistan started RAH E NAJAT operation in 2010, which resulted in ARMY entering by force in all Agencies except North Waziristan, where it harbored HAQQANI Group for use in Afghanistan after International forces leave. This created lot of tension with International forces leading to 26 NOV incident In MAHMOND. This has created a new urgency for concluding the mission.
MIRAN SHAH UNDER CURFEW:
From WANA I travelled to ZHOB (140KM away) along TANNIA valley. I had to pass through 7 check points, one of which was very thorough. From ZHOB I travelled to D.I.Khan and stayed overnight.
On 25th Jan I traveled to BUNNU with a view to visit MIRAN SHAH the Head Quarter of NORTH WAZIRISTAN. Same night there was a major attack by militants in Baran Area of BUNNU, killing one FC personnel and injuring six.
On 26th Jan tension was in the air. I was told that ARMY imposed a curfew on MIRAN SHAH on 23rd Jan and that house to house search was going out. This was compelling the militants to come out of their hiding places and they were launching desperate attacks like the one on Baran FC Check post.
I was advised not to go further now and visit MIRAN SHAH after a month, by when complete control was expected.
With ample time on hand, I decided to walk to the border of N. Waziristan. I reached the TOCHI River about 20 KMs away which formed the border. MIRAN SHAH was just 42 KM away from this point while RAZMAK some 50 KM.
During the walk I noticed lot of support for ANP Pukhtunkhawa and PTI. JUI support was limited although few Madarsas are located on the road.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION:
A) After a period of desperate attacks the militancy is likely to decline substantially; as the last sanctuary of militants i.e. N.W is in the process of being run over and pacified like S.W.
B) The recapturing of FATA along with reactivation of WANA, TANK, JANDOLA and RAMZAK cantonments must be followed by urgent absorption of the entire Region into Pakistan. The over estimated resistance is gone and therefore it is the right time to do away with all liberties this Region enjoyed. Each of the seven agencies be converted into Districts, like ZHOB in BALOCHISTAN. They may become part of KP.
C) Political parties must rush to the REGION to break the current exclusive sway of JUI. With the confirmed support base under threat, Maulana Fazlur Rahman is seeking new support base among masses.
