Contempt of Court Notice issued to Jang, The News, Ansar Abbasi and their lawyer

Contempt of Court hearings against Jang, The News and Ansar Abbasi

In the ongoing Defamation case filed by PPP Information Secretary, Fauzia Wahab against Ansar Abbasi, an interesting development took place on 22nd June, 2010 when the stay on Ansar Abbasi to write any uncorroborated story against Fauzia Wahab was not only continued but contempt of court notices were also issued to Jang, The News, Ansar Abbasi and their lawyer, Jam Asif Mehmood for the reporting in these newspapers on 11th June, 2010 and 18th June, 2010.

The Sindh High Court judge, Mr. Justice Maqbool Baqar (he was reinstated with Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry in March 2009, hence, one cannot say that he favors the PPP) took exception to the contents of the reporting in The News and Jang and stated that if someone feels that he can coerce the courts by their publications, then they are sadly mistaken.

Notices on contempt of court have been issued for 28th June, 2010. It is expected that now Akram Sheikh Advocate will be representing Ansar Abbasi, Jang and The News in the contempt hearings. It may also be noted that the law firm that is representing Ansar Abbasi (Ahmed & Qazi Associates), is one of the plaintiffs in the challenges to the 18th Amendment and they are being represented by none other than Akram Sheikh Advocate. Interesting connection!
