Ban on Shia website: Police violence against peaceful protesters in Karachi
KARACHI: Police officials resorted to using intense teargas and aerial firing to disperse a protest rally by the Shia Action Committee (SAC) near Numaish Chowrangi in Karachi, Express Newsreported on Tuesday.
The protesters wanted to go to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) office on Shahrah-e-Faisal and register their complaint against the ban on a Shia genocide watch website, shiakilling.com.
The law enforcers had told the participants of the rally that they will not be allowed to reach their destination and the protest route was blocked. However the protesters, mostly youngsters, overcame the blockade and moved on.
As noted by Nadir El-Edroos on Twitter: “There is something very very wrong when, DPC, JuD, LeJ etc can rally across the country, while Shia protesters get shelled.”
Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, daughter of late Benazir Bhutto, too condemned the police attack.

In reaction to harsh police action, the protesters threw stones at the police officials present in the area and burnt tyres. Groups of new protesters joined the demonstration later.
At least two protesters have been arrested. Several are injured due to inhaling or direct attack by tear gas.
The block on the Shia killing watchdog site came almost a week after the regulatory body had blocked the official website of the Ahmadiyya community, which was unblocked later.

Nobody supports killing of innocent people anywhere, including the poor being killed by American drones. But we really do not need sectarian websites promoting hatred by blowing minor events out of all proportion. People who are brothers and sisters ought to behave like brothers and sisters.
All I see a secular pro-PPP website supporting ShiaKilling.com

In a first for protests, religious organisation slams website ban
DAWN.COM
KARACHI: In what was possibly the first protest of its kind, a religious organisation was met with aerial firing by the police in Karachi, when they gathered to demonstrate against the shutdown of a Shia watchdog website.
The Shia Action Committee was protesting the alleged ban of the website http://www.shiakilling.com, when they were stopped at downtown Karachi’s Numaish Chowrangi, DawnNews reported on Tuesday.
The protestors, who were reportedly in hundreds, set off from Shah-i-Khurasan area (Jamshed Town), chanting anti-government slogans on their way. When they reached Numaish Chowrangi, police tried to stop them, which led to an altercation between both parties. Police officials then resort to aerial firing. While the crowd dispersed to the nearby alleyways, some still managed to move past Numaish and continued with their agitation.
A website, which monitors and maintains a “death count” of Pakistani Shia Muslims targeted in sectarian violence, has been banned by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, which operates on the directives of the Ministry of Information. Upon attempting to access the website, users are met with a “Access denied” message, a usual occurrence for banned websites.
Pakistan has previously banned social networking websites including Facebook and Twitter for carrying content considered disrespectful towards Islam and the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

Pakistan is unbelievable. On one end it won’t stop laskhar e jhangvi, sipah sahaba from killing innocent shias all across the country yet they have blocked the shiakilling site which basically reports and informs people of every shia killed there. These killers and their sympathiser don’t fear God and obviously no one can do anything to them in Pakistan anyway. What a shame
Violence erupts as police use force to break up rally against Shia killings

Several members of the Shia community were injured at Purani Numiash on Tuesday when police tear-gassed a demonstration against the killing of people from the sect and the blocking of a website that highlighted the murders.
The rally, organised by the Shia Action Committee, also saw a bus getting torched. The participants wanted to stage a demonstration outside the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) office in the area to demand the reopening of the website.
Witnesses said that demonstrators first blocked MA Jinnah and this caused a massive gridlock on both tracks of the major artery. The plan was to protest outside the PTA office and then march towards the Karachi Press Club and Sindh Governor House, but the demonstrators were halted in their tracks due to the tear-gassing of the police. Those injured in the police action were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Later on, the Rangers arrived at the scene and tried to convince the participants of the rally to hold their protest on the inner roads of the area and leave MA Jinnah Road to allow the smooth flow traffic. After negotiations, the protesters reached an agreement with the paramilitary force and moved to the inside lanes.
The rally was led by Maulana Mirza Yousuf Hussaini and started from the Imambargah Shah Khorasan.
A Jaffria Alliance spokesman said that more than 27 members of the Shia community had been killed over the last two months and not a single person involved in their murders was arrested. The demonstrators chanted slogans against adviser to the prime minister on interior, Rehman Malik, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad.

Rally against blocking of website turns violent
By Our Correspondent

KARACHI: At least three passenger vehicles were set on fire on Tuesday evening when a heavy police contingent tried to stop the participants of a rally organised by the Shia Action Committee (SAC) to stop them from going towards the office of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Sharae Faisal. They were protesting against the ban on a Shia website which was blocked recently by the PTA.
The participants gathered at the Numaish Chowrangi but were stopped by the police as they advanced towards the PTA office. When the protesters refused to back down and, according to witnesses, fired in the air, the police retaliated with teargas shells and fired shot in the air. Panic and chaos ensued in the rally and the adjoining areas as three passenger buses were set ablaze in Soldier Bazaar No 3. Four protesters, including a girl and three young men, were wounded in police shelling. MA Jinnah Road was blocked for almost three hours. Four men were also detained for rioting.
The rally participants claim that Shia residents of Soldier Bazaar arrived at Numaish Chowrangi after the teargas shells fell at Imambargah Shah-e-Khurasan at Numaish Chowrangi.
They said that there are several websites which are being run by banned organisations but the PTA only blocked their website. According to them, the police were responsible for the violence in the rally since they were the ones who fired teargas shells.
On the other hand, the police said that rally participants had been notified earlier that they would not be allowed to go to the PTA office. The participants, most of whom were youngsters, removed the blockades and went on to protest. The police claimed that the protesters pelted them with stones and burnt tires. They were later joined by another group.
The rally dispersed after top police officials ensured the protesters of their full cooperation.
The chief of Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, Allama Aftab Jaffery, had to come to Numaish Chowrangi and intervene between the police and the protesters.
Maulana Mirza Yousuf Hussain, who led the rally, said that the protest ended after the police ensured him of their full cooperation and release of the detained protesters and vehicles. He said that the police had also promised to allow a delegation of 15 Shia leaders to go to the PTA office and try to persuade them to unblock the website.
