The powerful Sipah-e-Sihaba: PPP and PML-N rush to shower privileges on Ali Raza’s family

What about thousands of Shia and Ahmedi Muslim families?

By Omar Khattab in Islamabad

Ali Raza was killed during the ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan. The government of Pakistan did well by bringing his body to Pakistan and then taking it to his hometown Shorkot where he was buried. That should have been the end of the matter.

But things changed all of sudden when the funeral prayers of Ali Raza were led by no less than Mullah Ahmed Ludhianvi, the chief of the mother of all terrorism in Pakistan: the banned Sipa-e-Sihaba. Once TV channels showed that the most feared man in Pakistan had led the prayers, Prime Minister Yousuf Gillani sent an MNA to Shorkot with bags of money and an announcement of a host of privileges for the families of the deceased. Not to be left behind, PML-N, which is actually a coalition partner of the Sipa-e-Sihaba in Jang, sent its leaders with a list of privileges to outnumber the ones offered by the prime minister.

Ali Raza was killed in Kyrgyzstan, but his family was accorded bounty as if he was killed as a result of Pakistani government’s negligence. Even in one’s death one is almighty if one belongs to a terrorist organization like the Sipa-e-Sihaba.

Mullah Ahmed Ludhianvi has officially been banned from taking part in any activity where he can incite people’s passions against the communities like the Shia and Ahmedi Muslims and the Christians. But he openly takes part in politics in the company of Punjab’s law Minister Rana Sana. The PML-N is the political face of the Sipa-e-Sihaba. Thus if a Muslim leaguer is openly supportive of the Sipa-e-Sihaba, it is understandable in a highly criminalized society like Pakistan. But what about the PPP, the party of the poor and the progressive?

Only weeks before 94 Ahmedi Muslims were killed by the Sipa-e-Sihaba’s suicide bombers, but no compensation was made to them. Last year the Sipa-e-Sihaba and PML-N joined hands in burning down a Christian village in Gojra and killing dozens of Christians. No compensation was made and no criminals nabbed. The Shia holocaust has been going on over two decades thanks to the Pakistan Army, the PML-N, and a host of Islamofascist parties, but never ever compensation was made to a Shia family which lost a son, a father, a mother, a bread winner, a toddler. No one has ever been indicted for encouraging the Shia holocaust. The Sipa-e-Sihaba leaders, backed by other Wahabi and Deobandi outfits, have given fatwas inciting and justifying the killing of the Shias, but no one, even the PPP, has ever taken action against them. The Wahabi/Deobandi leaders openly quote an infamous fatwa which says: If a dog eats from your plate you can still eat from it. But if a Shia touches your plate it becomes haram.

Has anyone—media, politicians, Supreme Court, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan—ever condemned this fatwa? Backed by Saudi Arabia’s petrodollar and Pakistan Army’s weapons and training plus a supportive judiciary, the Sipa-e-Sihaba is untouchable.

Such is the power of the Sipa-e-Sihaba.
