Shah Mahmood Qureshi Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider – by Hakim Hazik
Source: Justice Denied
Note: This post was written in February long before Raymond Davis’ release after a settlement between CIA and ISI facilitated through Saudi Arabia and PML-N.
Our history if full of martyrs who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the future of the Ummah. It is however rare for someone in the position of privilege and comfort to give up all their worldly belongings and set upon the path to shahadat. Who could have thought that Shah Mahmood would have joined the likes of Aziz Bhatti Shaheed and become a brilliant star, coruscating in the firmament of martyrdom.
The Ummah is beset with all kinds of dangers. We are facing one deadly Zionist conspiracy approximately every thirty seconds. The CIA is bent upon taking over our minimal strategic deterrent and hand it over to Israel. They are bent upon destroying Afghanistan and use it as a launching pad to invade Riko Dik. They are conspiring against the Kalabagh dam. They are weaving a web of conspiracy, so that Ijaz Butt can be removed from the PCB.
Scores of agent provocateurs such as Raymond Davis have infiltrated our society and are trying to undermine it from within. But he will not be easily let off. He will be brought to justice by the ever vigilant Rana Sanaullah, the indefatigable soldier of the Ummah. He will have to be beheaded in the time honoured Ummah fashion or pay diyat for the 5 innocent people whose lives he has taken; (including Shah Mahmood).
Obama should see the writing on the wall, especially the wall chalking by Jamaat ud Dawa in important strategic places such as Chauburji Chowk. The whole nation stands solidly behind the leader that we have come to love and revere. No no; not Shah Mahmood. It is none other than our beloved Hafiz Saeed. He has suggested that our investigation agencies should play their part by applying electric current to various parts of Raymond Davis. This will make him own up to his role in the heinous crimes that he has committed against the citizens of Lahore and against the International Sensitive Agency.
As Shah Mahmood has pointed out, our national honour is at stake. The spirit of 1965 has come alive once again. The nation stands united when the national honour is involved. We will eat grass but defend the national honour. By the grace of God, half of the nation is already eating grass. The other half will soon join them. Classy restaurants will soon be serving grass, a la carte.
If you ask us, the case has already been decided in the court of public opinion. The Ummah has taken great strides in law and jurisprudence. We have the example of Sialkot and Dera Ghazi Khan where public trial by lynch mob has been pioneered. This inspires international confidence in our fair, transparent and equitable justice system. Undue interference in these judicial proceedings would be a breach of our sovereignty and will be resisted with our minimal strategic deterrent.
PS: Abdul Basit has become the sixth victim of Raymond Davis. May his soul rest in peace.

Zardari `heaps scorn` on Shah Mahmood By Zulqernain Tahir
LAHORE, March 16: It appears that former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s political career on the platform of the Pakistan People’s Party is over after President Asif Ali Zardari said on Wednesday that some “rotten eggs” wanted to become Bhutto but their desire would never fulfill.
“Those who quit the party and then return don’t command respect. No body can become Bhutto. Some rotten eggs want to become Bhutto but they won’t,” President Zardari was quoted as having said in his telephonic address to the Punjab PPP MPAs at the Governor’s House here on Wednesday.
Zardari, also the co-chairman of the PPP, did not hide his anger at Qureshi. Without naming him, the president further said: “BB used to pardon those saying good bye to the party. But such people should remember that they do not get respect after returning to the party fold.”
Qureshi had violated the party discipline by refusing water and power ministry. He had time and again stated that he did not compromise on “changing” the diplomatic status of Raymond Davis. He blamed the US for depriving him of foreign ministry.
This is the first time that President Zardari without naming him expressed his annoyance at Qureshi.
Referring to Sajida Mir who earlier was removed from the Lahore women wing president slot for extending support to the disgruntled couple Nahid Khan and Safdar Abbasi, Zardari said she should remain loyal to the party.
In his hour or so address President Zardari also asked the MPAs to follow party’s policy of reconciliation and did not do a thing that destabilise the system, a message to let the Punjab Assembly function. Since the PPP assumed the role of opposition along with the PML-Q the speaker could not be able to run the house smoothly. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had reportedly spoken to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani about it and sought
his intervention.
Zardari told the party legislators that he had asked the prime minister to constitute a committee that would coordinate with them in addressing their problems. “I am aware of your problems. I know you will face tough time being in opposition and the federal government will help you out,” he said.
The co-chairman said the PPP established a Bilawal House in Lahore like that of Karachi and it would also win the next election. He said despite conspiracies the PPP government would complete its term.
Before the start of the address, Governor Latif Khosa briefied over 100 MPAs not to ask questions from the president as he would respond to their queries some other time. All the legislators followed the direction

We don’t need a corrupt leadership: Qureshi
MULTAN: Former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said issue of Pakistani degrees does not only exist in foreign countries but it is there in Pakistani assemblies as well.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi said this while addressing participants of a function here in a local college Wednesday.
He held “we want a pious leadership and not a corrupt leadership in the prevailing situation.
The economic growth is not picking up at the pace the population is increasing, he underlined. No government had ever focused on promotion of education in the country, he charged. Government should patronize private education institutions for the sake of promotion of education so that education sector could fetch more investment, he demanded. Education standard is deteriorating in the country, which needs to be upgraded, he stressed.
During the Matric examination students had to face difficulties, he regretted. Young students are future of the country and the day is not far off when the young generation will bring about revolution, he hoped. “I say change will come in the country through youth”, he hoped.
He refused to give his stance on imposition of 15 percent flood tax through ordinance by the president Asif Ali Zardari.

Former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi is building his own profile by holding public meetings and press conferences, outlining the problems faced by the common man and the issues faced by the country. He is calling the present leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) incompetent and corrupt.
It is strange that Shah Mehmood Qureshi only came to know of this fact when he was refused the foreign ministry post in the new cabinet. There are many similarities between Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, but the question is: how will he be able to replace Zardaris hold on the party or will there be another PPP faction?
I think he has the support of the military establishment, who are the actual architects of Pakistans foreign policy.

Govt should clear mystery around Davis release, says Qureshi
our correspondent
Saturday, March 19, 2011
LAHORE: Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has asked Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to take the nation into confidence on the issue of release of Raymond Davis, besides calling for giving a full and transparent account of the issue to members of the party and its parliamentary allies, before the Presidential address to the joint session of parliament on March 22.
Addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on Friday, Shah Mahmood Qureshi stressed the need for restoration of hope and belief amongst the rank and file of the party before the forthcoming death anniversary of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.
He said the people wanted justice and transparency, adding that the mystery surrounding the release of Davis had raised many questions that were still unanswered. He said his stand stood vindicated on the issue of diplomatic immunity after the events of March 16. “If Davis had the immunity, the US government would not have resorted to Diyat law to secure his release,” he added.
Qureshi said a few rotten fish could not be allowed to pollute the whole pond; they could not determine the fate of the nation. He said it was time for an honest, clean and visionary leadership to come forward. “It is time for political cleansing of the parties; it is time to remove the rotten eggs from the party.” Besides raising many other questions, he also wanted a reply to the question: who paid the Diyat?
He said the people wanted to know the facts since the US secretary of state had categorically denied paying the blood money. He said he was sad that the Diyat law had been used as a political tool. He said the people wanted to know who the real negotiators were, as American officials had denied any direct dealing with the families of the victims.
He said it was unfortunate that the lawyer of the victims’ families had been changed without his knowledge. He was also prevented from meeting his clients for four hours on the trial day. “If Diyat was negotiated without any coercion, and in full conformity with the Sharia law, why there was this silence from the families of the victims,” he asked. “Why are they missing? Why are their houses locked?”
He said the Raymond issue did not just pertain to two or three families; it was an issue involving the whole nation. He asked why the government had forgotten about Ibad-ur Rahman, a Pakistani who was run over by a US Consulate vehicle which had come to rescue Davis on January 27. “Who will give justice to his family? What about Shamaila who committed suicide because she feared she would not find justice.””

Rid Pak govt off ‘rotten fish’: Qureshi
Pakistan’s former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has responded to apparent criticism of his actions by President Asif Ali Zardari by saying that the ruling PPP government should get rid of “rotten fish” within its ranks to improve its image among the people. Qureshi said “a few rotten fish”
in the government were responsible for the problems being faced by Pakistan. “A few rotten fish cannot be allowed to pollute the whole pond and determine the fate of the nation,” he said during an interaction with reporters at the Lahore Press Club yesterday.
His comments came in the wake of Zardari’s remarks that some “rotten eggs” wanted to assume the position of the Bhutto family that has led the PPP since its inception.
“Those who quit the party and then return don’t command respect. Nobody can become Bhutto,” Zardari told party lawmakers earlier this week without naming Qureshi. Qureshi has been criticising the government, especially its handling of the case of arrested CIA contractor Raymond Davis, since the PPP’s top leadership decided not to reallocate the foreign affairs portfolio to him during a recent revamp of the cabinet.
He has also been sidelined within the party for claiming that Davis did not enjoy blanket immunity. The former minister said “honest, clean and visionary leaders” should come forward to rescue Pakistan. “It is now time for political cleansing of the parties.
It is time to remove the real rotten eggs from the parties,” he said. He called on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to take the country into confidence on the release of Davis, who was freed on Wednesday after over two million dollars was paid as “blood money” to the families of two men he shot and killed in January.
“The mystery shrouding the release of Davis has raised more questions than answers,” he claimed. Qureshi said the procedure adopted for Davis’ release vindicated his stand that the American did not have diplomatic immunity.
“If Davis had immunity, the US government would not have paid diyat to secure his release,” he said. He also raised several questions: “Who paid the diyat?
People want to know since the US Secretary of State has categorically denied paying blood money. It is a sad reflection that the law was used as a political tool to free Davis,” he said. Qureshi asked who had negotiated the deal to free Davis.
“Since the American officials have made it clear that they had no direct dealing with the families of the victims, the people of Pakistan demand a transparent and full disclosure of the process and trial,” he said.

Qureshi”s chances of returning to govt may have faded
Lahore, Mar 17 (PTI) Former Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi”s chances of returning to the PPP-led government appears to have faded following party chief and President Asif Ali Zardari”s remarks that some “rotten eggs” wanted to assume the position of the Bhutto family.
“Those who quit the party and then return don”t command respect. Nobody can become Bhutto. Some rotten eggs want to become Bhutto but they won”t,” Zardari said in a telephonic address to PPP legislators who had gathered at the Governor”s House in Lahore late last night.
Zardari, who became head of the PPP after his wife, former premier Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in 2007, did not hide his anger at leaders like Qureshi who had become estranged with the party.
Without naming Qureshi, Zardari said: “Benazir Bhutto used to pardon those saying goodbye to the party. But such people should remember that they do not get respect after returning to the party fold.”
Qureshi had refused to join the cabinet during a recent reshuffle after he learnt the PPP”s top leadership had decided not to reallocate the foreign affairs portfolio to him.
He also criticised the government”s handling of the case of CIA contractor Raymond Davis, who was arrested in January after he gunned down two Pakistani men in Lahore.
The former Foreign Minister said repeatedly that he did not compromise on his stance that Davis did not have blanket diplomatic immunity.
He also blamed the US for depriving him of the foreign ministry for his stand on Davis, who was pardoned and freed by a court yesterday under a “blood money” deal.

Qureshi set to bid adieu to his longtime allegiance to PPP
* Meets Shahbaz Sharif to secure his return to PML-N
By Raja Riaz
LAHORE: In an unusual development, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) stalwart and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had an exclusive one-on-one meting with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) central leader and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif late on Friday night to discuss the possibility of his return to the PML-N folds.
The meeting that continued until 1:05am Saturday from 9:40pm Friday was held at the residence of Tehmina Durrani, wife of Shabaz Sharif.
It may be mentioned here that Qureshi, a former colleague of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, has developed differences with his party (PPP) leadership ever since he was pushed out as foreign minister in February.
Sources privy to the affairs claim that Qureshi was annoyed because was not inducted in the new federal cabinet as minister of foreign affairs, the office that he ran before rightisizing of the cabinet. Qureshi, however, denies this. In his several public addresses, Qureshi has maintained that the Raymond Davis matter has forced him not to continue with those who ‘compromised national interest’ in the case of the American.
On Saturday afternoon, Qureshi held a press conference, demanding resignation of his party leadership from the offices of president and prime minister. This clearly indicates that Qureshi will join the PML-N in recent future.
Pertinent to mention here is that Qureshi’s father was a close aide of dictator Ziaul Haq.
Qureshi was first elected on non-party basis from the constituency of PP-164 Multan in 1985 general elections that were held under the umbrella of Zia’s dictatorial regime. He then joined the Muslim League, a party revitalised by the despot. Qureshi returned to Punjab legislature on a PML-N ticket from PP-166 Multan and served in the cabinet of Nawaz Sharif as the minister for planning and development from November 30, 1988, to August 6, 1990. He was a returned candidate in the 1990 elections from the same constituency but with a changed loyalty as he had parted ways with the PML-N.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, after losing his office in the foreign ministry, has suddenly realised that he is a man of principles. Being a former foreign minister, he should know very well the Pakistani government’s position. Mr Qureshi’s actions are directly harming national interests. His actions remind one of the late elder Bhutto, who had resigned as foreign minister and launched a successful, vigorous movement for the restoration of democracy and basic rights against the first army dictator, General Ayub Khan.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi is trying to get cheap publicity by using these tactics to regain his office in the foreign ministry. He claims that he is a follower of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto but he is perhaps forgetting that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has come into power after many sacrifices and struggles that lasted for a good 12 years.
