Deobandi activists of Ulma-e-Deoband justify attack on Data Darbar Lahore

At least 50 Sunni Barelvis were killed and 200 injured by Deobandi militants of Sipah Sahaba on 1 July 2010 in a suicide attack on Data Darbar Lahore.

In an expression of medieval sectarian hatred and barbarianism, Deobandi activist of the Ulma-e-Deoband (Pakistan’s largest facebook page of Deobandi Muslims) justified the July 2010 attack on Data Darbar Lahore.

The July 2010 Lahore bombings occurred on 1 July 2010 in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Two Deobandi suicide bombers of Sipah Sahaba Taliban (SST) blew themselves up at the Sufi shrine, Data Durbar Complex. At least 50 people died and 200 others were hurt in the blasts.

The Data Durbar shrine is the burial place of the Sufi saint Syed Ali Hajwairi. His book ‘Kashif-ul-Mahjub’ is an important treatise in Sufi literature known as ‘Malfujat’. The shrine was mostly frequented by members of the Sunni Barelvi sect whom the Deobandi militants of Sipah Sahaba Taliban and their Wahhabi patrons consider kafir (heretics), biddati (innovator in religion) and mushrik (polytheists). In March 2009 Taliban militants had bombed the shrine of Sufi poet Rahman Baba and in June 2009 Sarfraz Ahmed Naeemi a moderate cleric belonging to the Sunni Barelvi sect was killed in a suicide bombing claimed by Deobandi militants (Sipah Sahaba Taliban).

After the Data Darbar attack, religious leaders of the Sunni Barelvi sect accused the Punjab government of having connections with the Sipah Sahaba and Taliban. They met with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and demanded the resignation of the Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah Deobandi who had previously campaigned with Ahmed Ludhianvi Deobandi, a leader of the banned militant group Sipah-e-Sahaba (aka ASWJ). After the meeting, Haji Fazl-e-Karim, one of the Sunni Barelvi leaders, told the media “Rana Sanaullah’s contacts with terrorists are most obvious, and he must resign.”

Almost two and a half year after the brutal attack on Data Darbar, the Ulma-e-Deoband (literal meaning Deobandi clerics) web site has formally owned up the attack and justified it by stating that Sunni Barelvis are innovators (Biddati) in Islami faith (hence it is Halal to attack them).
