We condemn threats to Asma Jahangir’s life
Assassination plot against Asma Jahangir exposed
Not unlike millions of peace loving, progressive Pakistanis, LUBP editors and team members are concerned over threat to senior human rights activist Asma Jahangir’s life. In Kashif Abbas’s TV program today (Off the Record – ARY TV), Asma Jahangir detailed a plot by the military to assassinate her. Apparently, in view of Asma’s detailed revelations, Kashif took a break, but the show ended.
However, later on Geo TV’s Aapas Ki Baat, Asma did manage to speak to Najam Sethi about the plan by Pakistan army (ISI in particular) to assassinate her. In that show, she clearly stated that senior level army generals were planning to kill her.
Apparently, those with guns are afraid of an unarmed woman!
In Habib Jalib’s words: dartay hain bandooqan walay aik nihatti larki say (men with guns are afraid of an unarmed woman)
Jalib said these words about Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and even today it rings true for anyone who comes on the wrong side of the military establishment. Which is not to say that anyone or everyone matchs up to Benazir. For her anti-resistance stance, she sacrficed far more than the upper-middle class urbanites – many of whom mocked, jeered and abandoned her during her (Benazir’s) life time.
Today the threats are against prominent lawyer and human rights activist, Asma Jehangir. Benazir Bhutto, Shahbaz Bhatti, Salmaan Taseer, Murtaza Bhutto, and thousands of unnamed Balochs, Shias, Pashtuns and other citizens of Pakistan have been killed by a ruthless Deep State.
They want to kill Asma particularly because of her bold stance against Baloch genocide by Pakistan army and its various agencies and proxies. Apparently, Pakistan army chief and ISI chief are upset due to Asma’s recent speech at the Balochistan Conference in which she exposed and criticized army’s dirty role in extra judicial killings of the Baloch and Shia Muslims in Balochistan.
They also want to eliminate her because they want to rig the future elections and consider Asma as a major impediment to their plans.
According to Asma, Pakistan army generals are planning to kill her via their Jihadi-sectarian proxies (of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat aka Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, which is a sister organization of the Taliban and Al Qaeda).
The only way we can help Asma Jahangir is by raising awareness not only within but also outside Pakistan.
We must expose those who want to eliminate an independent, progressive voice from Pakistan, a true liberal who, unlike pseudo-liberals hiding in the Jinnah Institute and Jang Group etc, is not a toady of the military establishment.
May Asma’s integrity on the Balochistan issue should be an inspiration for all, particularly for those who claim to be progressive and liberal but in fact remain loyal to the pro-Taliban and pro-right-wing agendas and discourses of the Deep State. We urge everyone to protest and highlight the threats to her life.
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) which otherwise remains notoriously silent on genocide of the Shias, Pashtuns etc by Pakistan army and proxies has finally broken its silence and expressed concern at info-leak of threat to Asma’s life.
According to Daily Times:
Different personalities belonging to various civil society organisations and bar associations have expressed serious concern and alarm at the information leak from a responsible and highly credible source that there was a serious threat to the life of the country’s leading human rights activist and one of the most influential leaders of the Bar, Asma Jahangir.
The people who spoke out included Justice (r) Fakhruddin Ebrahim, Dr Mubashir Hassan, IA Rehman, SCBA President Yasin Azad, Pakistan Bar Council President Akhtar Hussain, Ali Ahmad Kurd, Tariq Mahmood, Muneer A Malik, Lt Gen (r) Talat Masood, Air Marshal (r) Zafar Chaudhry, senior journalist Ahmed Rashid, Peshawar High Court Bar President Latif Afridi, Lahore High Court Bar Association President Shahryam Sarwar Chaudhry, Balochistan High Court Bar Association President Zahoor Ahmad Shawani, Malakand High Court Bar Association President Sher Muhammad, Azam Nazir Tarar, Ehsan Bhoon, Justice (r) Malik Saeed Hassan, SM Masood, ANP General Secretary Ehsan Wyne, Prof Salima Hashmi, Hina Jilani, Munir Kakar, Jugnu Mohsin, Kamran Shafi, Kamran Arif, Rashed Rahman, Fareeda Shaheed, Samina Rehman, Dr Mehdi Hassan, Dr Haroon Ahmed, Saleem Asmi, Tahir Hassan, Neelam Hussain, Kishwar Naheed, Khawar Mumtaz, Nazish Ataullah, Shahtaj Qizilbash, Nasreen Azhar, Abbas Rashid, Nighat Saeed, Sajid Bashir, Shahzad Hassan Sheikh and Muhammad Tahseen.
They said, “What makes the reported conspiracy to liquidate Asma Jahangir especially serious is, firstly, the environment of target killings in which dissident persons’ dead bodies are being dumped all over, and, secondly, the fact that the finger of accusation has been pointed at the extraordinarily privileged state actors.” (Source)

Threat to Asma’s life condemned – HRCP Press release
Lahore, 4 June 2012: We the undersigned citizens, belonging to various sections of Pakistan’s civil society, express our serious concern and alarm at the information-leak from a responsible and highly credible source that there is a serious threat to the life of the country’s leading human rights activist and one of the most influential leaders of the bar, Ms Asma Jahangir. What makes the reported conspiracy to liquidate Asma Jahangir especially serious is, firstly, the environment of target-killings, in which dissident persons’ dead bodies are being dumped all over, and, secondly, the fact that the finger of accusation has been pointed at the extraordinarily privileged state actors. We wish to make it clear to all and sundry, especially those who preside over the security apparatus, that they must not under-estimate the consequences of any harm being caused to the life of Asma Jahangir. This is not a conspiracy against one individual alone; it is obviously a plot against Pakistan’s future as a democratic state, of which the threat to Asma Jahangir may be only one, though crucial, part. What the duty of the state in this matter is and how the civil society must face the challenge thrown to it need no elaboration.

On one hand you support killing machines such as Jinnah Institute, on the other, you claim to support Asma Jahangir. Funny? No, Tragic!
On one hand you present Hamid Mir (killer of 95 Ahmadis) as your hero, on the other you are worried about Asma Jahangir’s safety. Khoob!
As long as you are directly or indirectly supporting the military establishment and its proxy media outlets, you are enabling murders!

LAHORE: Former President SCBA Asma Jahangir has vowed to continue her mission of bringing facts to the fore in the interest of the nation no matter what it costs.
Talking to The News late Monday night, she said the establishment had worked on a plan to assassinate her, which, somehow got leaked.
It was learnt the information in this regard was passed on to her by an insider who asked her to remain vigilant to the imminent threat. Asma, however, kept the identity of the insider secret. “I have well-wishers everywhere. I just cannot reveal the identity of the person. All I can say is it was a credible piece of information,’’ Asma said.
The renowned human rights activist simply refused to budge on her cause, saying she would fight for the rights of Pakistanis till the end, and didn’t care much about such threats. It was learnt her address in the recent Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) seminar might have triggered this response from the establishment. Asma, on the other hand, refused to comment on it. She said she had a plan to visit Belfast (N. Ireland) on the coming Wednesday, where she had been invited to attend a seminar of lawyers. Now, she said she would cancel the appointment in view of the emerging scenario back home. She said she would stay in Pakistan so as to convey a clear message to the powers that-be she was not scared of anybody.
She informed The News a contingent of Rangers had been deployed at her residence in the wee hours of Monday, around 2:30am, on the direction of the Ministry of Interior.
She said she was in contact with the government on this count. Asma said she would hold a press conference on Tuesday (today) for making public certain facts on the issue.

We are with Asma Jahangir. Entire Pakistan stands behind her.
Anything else than a cheap publicity stunt?
If her criticism of judiciary is muted i dont know who is criticizing the judiciary. She has been on forefront of criticizing this judiciary from NRO to Memogate. These were really uncalled for criticism esp in present context
asma is a hypocrite….. she is a drama queen…. she has Never stood for missing persons, Dr Aafia and even now for drone attacks… She portrays herself as a human rights activist, she do stand for a rape victim through which she cash the west and liberals…..
shame on her…
Asma Jahangir is a matured , respectable , liberal , experienced slut…
@Sherry, Valid point. The relevant sentence is now edited.

According to a news report the Ministry of Defence spokesman has expressed concern that Ms Asma Jahangir – a senior Supreme Court lawyer and human rights activist – has publicly accused the intelligence agencies of plotting to assassinate her. This is a very serious allegation for which she instead of articulating over the media should lodge a proper complaint in a court of law and provide the necessary evidence so that the matter is properly investigated and appropriate steps taken not only to safeguard her life but also expose the elements who want to eliminate her.
And, if she doesn’t do it so then there will be a big question mark about her own credibility and intentions of maligning the agencies.
Hussain Naqi:
the ministry of defence should first investigate the supreme court assigned tasks and act upon persistent demands of both civil and political society about the few hundred disappeared baloch who returned as dead bodies ,many mutilated ,on the roadside in balochistan. superior judiciary is being blackmailed since it took up the cases of disappeared and expressed its anger over the dead bodies of those whom they had asked to be produced before the court.
asma has done it correct to bring the issue in public domain. it is quite evident that the military establishment is worried over the expansion of space for civilian control due to the foiling of conspiracies against democratic process.
gentlemen like col. jafri are fully aware and should not pretend to be innocent about the mischief of those who should obey the elected.

And she is right. The judiciary, especially the Chief Justice, is as corrupt as the Army and ISI.
Tuis blog has revealed the real threat to Asma Jehangir’s life. She has served the country well aas an advocate of weaker sections of our society . she is an out spoken Social activist. She remained in the fore front of the lawyers movement for the restoration of the justice. She has never made compromises on the principles she firmly believes in. She is a couraageous woman and great exponent of fair justice system and a warrior for the human rights preservation.
She has acted as a counsel for woman’s rights also.
She is not liked by the establishment and rightist , religious groups andterrorist v groups . She faces real threat to her life. these jihadi out fits want to take her out. We can not be naive like so many other critics of her who say this is all aheap publicity stunt.
She infact facesthrets from these organizations. May Allah Protect her.
