Nadeem Afzal Gondal speaks in Pakistan’s parliament against target killing of Shia Muslims

A few months ago, I wrote a post on the distinction between Pakistan’s lifestyle liberals and political liberals. Of late, I have been asked by some friends on Twitter and also via email to provide some examples of Pakistan’s political liberals. Here is one such example: Pakistan MP Afzal Nadeem Chan speaks in bold and clear terms on an urgent human rights crisis, i.e., target killing of Shia Muslims.
It is an empirical fact that in terms of faith group, Shia Muslims are the largest target killed community in Pakistan. Also, it is a fact that Shia massacres remain hugely ignored or misrepresented by both Urdu and English media. According to an estimate, about 1000-1500 Shia Muslims per year are being target killed in Pakistan (average 3 to 4 Shias killed per day) since 1988 when a leading Shia scholar Allama Arif Al Hussaini was killed by Jihado-sectarian terrorists backed by Pakistan army’s General Fazle Haq.
Tens of thousands of Shia Muslims have been killed in the last two decades by Pakistan army-backed Jihado-sectarian groups including but not limited to Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP, renamed as Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal-Jamaat ASWJ, also operates as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi LeJ), Jaish-e-Muhammad, Harkatul Mujahideen, Taliban, Al Qaeda and other similar organizations with overlapping and amorphous boundaries.
Shia killing, not unlike Pashtun and Baloch killing, is an issue where the artificiality of the liberal-conservative or right-wing left-wing binary (or Urdu press-English press binary) becomes most obvious. When it comes to the Deep State’s role in the ongoing massacres of Shia Muslims, Balcohs and Pashtuns, both Urdu and English media and both right-wing and so called liberal journalists and activists either become silent or resort to denial or misrepresentation.
It is in this context that political liberals such as Mian Iftikhar Hussain and Bushra Gohar of ANP, Nasir Ali Shah and Afzal Nadeem Gondal of PPP and other similar leaders offer hope to Pakistan’s oppressed and target killed communities.
In the following clip, Afzal Nadeem Gondal highlights and condemns in clearest terms the ongoing target killings of Shia Muslims in Pakistan and also hints towards the fact that the Jihado-sectarian monsters are able to operate with impunity because of tacit support from Pakistan army and its spy agencies (ISI, MI etc). In other words, while Pakistan’s lifestyle liberals (Sherry Rehman, Ejaz Haider, Najam Sethi, Nasim Zehra and their affiliates and promoters) are busy in enabling further Shia massacres by peddling the pro-military establishment’s Deep State propaganda (e.g., through the Jinnah Institute), it is the political liberals such as Afzal Nadeem Gondal and others who are boldly confronting the Deep State and its Jihado-sectarian children.

Salute to Nadeem Afzal Chan. He is a real Chan, the Moon of Pakistan politics!
His bold and clear stance against security establishment’s conspiracies against democracy:
17 Dec 2011
“During the meeting, MNA Nadeem Afzal Gondal suggested that there was a dire need to take PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and other anti-establishment forces into confidence over the situation and pressures being faced by the government. This proposal was also endorsed by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani,” said the source. The source added that Gondal also called for strongly defending the party’s stance at all forums, which he said was badly lacking as neither the Information Ministry nor the party’s Media Wing was doing it, and all were ducking the media critique giving an impression that the government’s version was weak.
“This triggered a debate which lasted for around an hour with most of the party MPs blasting the information minister and information wing of the PPP for not defending the party,” said the source

Protests on threats to Hamid Mir by security estab:
raising the issue on a point of order, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) MNA Nadeem Afzal Gondal said that despite a democratic set-up in the country, journalists were receiving life threats for speaking the truth. He expressed concern over threats to Mir and demanded an inquiry by parliament into the matter.

Mehmal Sarfraz, a lifestyle liberal, mourns Salmaan Taseer and quotes another lifestyle liberal:
Two days after Mr Taseer’s assassination, Kala Kawa — a blogger — wrote these lines: “The Governor was killed because he voiced his opinion. That’s it. Until now I’d taken it as a given. We’re part of a fairly free country, where we at least have the right to say what we want to say. I’m afraid that no longer holds true; and that’s probably where the suffocation comes from.”

Read again: Kala Kawa says, quotes by Mehmal: “Until now I’d taken it as a given. We’re part of a fairly free country, where we at least have the right to say what we want to say. ”
Free country? Did you ask any Shia Muslim the price of freedom to express and practice their fath? An Ahmadi Muslim?
Shame on lifestyle liberals, they are worse than Malik Ishaq and Riaz Basra.
Isn’t this the assembly that is used to declaring Muslim kafir? What good can we expect from this assembly, barring exceptions like Chan.
In the same op-ed Mehmal misrepresents and hides another fact, the unholy nexus between right wingers and the liberal looking proxies:
“A rally held on December 18, 2011, was a perfect example of this alliance where the Difa-i-Pakistan Council (Pakistan Defence Council) chanted jihadi slogans against India, the US, NATO forces, etc. Banned terrorist groups like the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba (LeT) — now Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) — were out in full force spewing venom against our neighbour, India. The civilian government wants peaceful relations with India but the military wants to circumvent the peace process. Kargil war, the Mumbai attacks and this recent bigoted rally are all examples of how far the military can go, along with its jihadi proxies, to prevent peaceful relations with India.”
http://www.mid-day.com/opinion/2012/jan/060112-opinion-An-ugly-reality.htm
Did you notice what Mehmal omitted from the above description of the Lahore rally by JuD-SSP? Of course, the fact that a liberal looking Imran Khan sent a special message to that rally. (Yes, the same Imran Khan whose candidate for MNA on women’s seat in 2002 was none other than the notorious Zardari-phobe Tammy Haq who happens to be Sana Saleem’s and Mehmal’s best friend.
——-
While Imran Khan could not attend the conference in person, his PTI workers participated in the conference and Imran Khan’s special message was read out on his behalf to the conference participants right before the Sipah-e-Sahaba leader Muhammad Ahmed Ludhianvi’s speech.

In many ways, life-stye liberal proxies of the Deep State are more dangerous than the transparently pro-ISI Javed Chaudhry & Ansar Abbasi.

Looking at Mehmal, Sana Saleem, Tammy Haq, Ejaz Haider and their ilk, the entire liberal-conservative binary seems useless in Pakistan.

PPP MPA seeks action against Mumtaz Qadri’s supporters

LAHORE – Days after religious groups protested in Lahore against the death sentence awarded to the killer of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, a member of the Punjab Assembly (MPA) has asked the chief justice of Pakistan to act against clerics supporting Mumtaz Qadri. Speaking in the Punjab Assembly on Thursday, Malik Pervaiz Rafique of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) said that it was regrettable that Qadri was being provided luxurious facilities in jail, while the life of Christian blasphemy convict Aasia Bibi was in danger in her prison cell. Taseer, who spoke out in support of Aasia, was shot dead by Qadri, a member of the governor’s security squad. Rafique also expressed his concerns over the security of eight million Christians in Punjab. “The Punjab government must provide them security and guard their places of worship,” he said. But Treasury members refused to allow discussion on the topic, asking the opposition members to refrain from commenting on the case until the court gives its final verdict. The opposition parties also strongly protested over the deteriorating law and order situation and blamed the police for all the ills in the province. In their hard hitting speeches, members of the PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) called Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah the “patron in chief of all the banned and terrorist organisations”. PPP Deputy Parliamentary Leader Shaukat Basra said dacoits were ruling in Punjab and police was getting bribes not only from the accused, but also from those coming to file cases. He said that banned extremist and religious organisations were having a free hand and the provincial law minister was still maintaining contacts with them. At this, Speaker Rana Mohammad Iqbal expunged the remarks, saying the member was calling the law minister patron of terrorist organisations.

Budget scrutiny by standing committees
“This is one of the most crucial reforms required in the National Assembly as it allows public representatives to truly discharge their role of control and scrutiny over purse strings,” said PILDAT, thanking and congratulating all the members of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges, under the chairmanship of Nadeem Afzal Gondal, MNA, for this initiative to approve this key reform.

ISI, MI accused of meddling in Balochistan affairs
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party MNA Afzal Nadeem Chan on Friday said that the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Military Intelligence (MI) were active in Balochistan while the civilian government had no say in the provincial affairs. Taking part in the debate on new provinces in the National Assembly, Chan said that everyone knew it well that who was in control of the Balochistan affairs, but no one dare say it in open. “I am saying that ISI and MI are controlling the provinces and I am not afraid of paying a price for it,” Chan said. He held Punjab responsible for the separation of East Pakistan and feared that if the voices of deprived regions were not considered, it would be disastrous for the country. Chan also lashed out at the Supreme Court for connecting the Bhutto reference case with the alleged contempt of court committed by former federal law minister Babar Awan. “Whatever Babar Awan has done is a separate issue. For God sake, don’t associate it with the Bhutto reference case,” Afzal pleaded. staff report
