A few months ago, I wrote a post on the distinction between Pakistan’s lifestyle liberals and political liberals. Of late, I have been asked by some friends on Twitter and also via email to provide some examples of Pakistan’s political liberals. Here is one such example: Pakistan MP Afzal Nadeem Chan speaks in bold and clear terms on an urgent human rights crisis, i.e., target killing of Shia Muslims.
It is an empirical fact that in terms of faith group, Shia Muslims are the largest target killed community in Pakistan. Also, it is a fact that Shia massacres remain hugely ignored or misrepresented by both Urdu and English media. According to an estimate, about 1000-1500 Shia Muslims per year are being target killed in Pakistan (average 3 to 4 Shias killed per day) since 1988 when a leading Shia scholar Allama Arif Al Hussaini was killed by Jihado-sectarian terrorists backed by Pakistan army’s General Fazle Haq.
Tens of thousands of Shia Muslims have been killed in the last two decades by Pakistan army-backed Jihado-sectarian groups including but not limited to Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP, renamed as Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal-Jamaat ASWJ, also operates as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi LeJ), Jaish-e-Muhammad, Harkatul Mujahideen, Taliban, Al Qaeda and other similar organizations with overlapping and amorphous boundaries.
Shia killing, not unlike Pashtun and Baloch killing, is an issue where the artificiality of the liberal-conservative or right-wing left-wing binary (or Urdu press-English press binary) becomes most obvious. When it comes to the Deep State’s role in the ongoing massacres of Shia Muslims, Balcohs and Pashtuns, both Urdu and English media and both right-wing and so called liberal journalists and activists either become silent or resort to denial or misrepresentation.
It is in this context that political liberals such as Mian Iftikhar Hussain and Bushra Gohar of ANP, Nasir Ali Shah and Afzal Nadeem Gondal of PPP and other similar leaders offer hope to Pakistan’s oppressed and target killed communities.
In the following clip, Afzal Nadeem Gondal highlights and condemns in clearest terms the ongoing target killings of Shia Muslims in Pakistan and also hints towards the fact that the Jihado-sectarian monsters are able to operate with impunity because of tacit support from Pakistan army and its spy agencies (ISI, MI etc). In other words, while Pakistan’s lifestyle liberals (Sherry Rehman, Ejaz Haider, Najam Sethi, Nasim Zehra and their affiliates and promoters) are busy in enabling further Shia massacres by peddling the pro-military establishment’s Deep State propaganda (e.g., through the Jinnah Institute), it is the political liberals such as Afzal Nadeem Gondal and others who are boldly confronting the Deep State and its Jihado-sectarian children.
