Death of an Icon: Nusrat Bhutto (1929-2011)
Nusrat Bhutto, former first lady of Pakistan, passed away in Dubai on Oct. 23 at the age of 82.
Bhutto, the widow of former Pakistani president and prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, had been suffering from cancer and Alzheimer’s. She had been living in Dubai since at least 1998 with her daughter Benazir and her grandchildren Bilawal, Bakhtawar and Aseefa, and had largely been kept away from the public.
Bhutto was a style icon, the personification of grace under pressure, and a sharp politician in her own right. She was Bhutto’s second wife, and played a pivotal role in kick-starting his political career using her Iranian heritage to win favor for her husband with then president Iskander Mirza. She took over the Pakistan Peoples Party after her husband’s government was ousted by Gen. Zia-ul-Haq in 1977. During the Zia years, as the second ever chief of the PPP, she braved batons and arrest and worked alongside politicians once inimical to her husband for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan. She was elected to the National Assembly in 1977, in 1988, when Benazir became the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state, and again in 1997.
Bhutto’s lot was a tragic one. Her husband was executed by Zia’s military regime in 1979. Her son Shahnawaz died under mysterious circumstances in Cannes in 1985, her other son, Murtaza—whom she supported over Benazir to lead the PPP after his return from exile in 1993—was gunned down 15 years ago just outside the Bhutto mansion in Karachi, and Benazir was assassinated on Dec. 27, 2007, after concluding a political rally in Rawalpindi.
The news of Bhutto’s death elicited an outpouring of sympathy across the political spectrum with coalition and opposition parties issuing tributes to her, marveling at her courage, and recalling the Greek tragedy-like story of the Bhuttos. Speaking on cable news channels from Karachi, Murtaza’s daughter, Fatima Bhutto, said she learnt of her grandmother’s death through the media. “She was more than just a role model,” she said, weeping. Fatima said Benazir’s family had kept her away from her grandmother for over 15 years.
Bhutto is survived by daughter Sanam, who lives a quiet life in London, and eight grandchildren. She will be buried in Garhi Khuda Bukhsh, alongside her husband and three children.

A great woman. A woman who sacrificed most in her life. There arent many who lose so much in a lifetime. A husband, two sons and a daughter. Traumatised by cancer and then alzheimer’s disease, she gave all that she earned in her life in this lifetime. May Allah rest her soul in peace.
