Headline says it all: Khawaja Sharif to defend Mumtaz Qadri at IHC
I need not write more than this. Former Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Khawaja Sharif will defend murderer of Shaheed Salmaan Taseer, Mumtaz Qadri, in his appeal at the Islamabad High Court. Yet another sad day for Pakistan in 2011!
Former LHC chief justice to defend Mumtaz Qadri

Published: October 10, 2011
ISLAMABAD: Former Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Khawaja Sharif will defend Mumtaz Qadri, the murderer of Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, in court on Tuesday, confirmed Lawyer Raja Shujaur Rehman.
Justice Khawaja was appointed Chief Justice of the LHC on April 12, 2009 and retired on 8 December 2010 on attaining the age of superannuation. He was appointed to the court on May 21, 1998.
The CJ remained deposed from the bench from November 3, 2007 till March 17, 2009 when he was restored.
The Divisional bench (DB) of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), comprising of Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman and Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan will hear the case at 10:30am in the IHC.
Qadri had filed an appeal before the IHC earlier challenging his death sentence. An anti-terrorism court (ATC) sentenced Qadri to death earlier this month on two counts for the murder of Taseer. The self-confessed killer’s defence pleas, which invoked religious sentiments and argued the accused was provoked into the act, were dismissed by the court.
Qadri, a constable in the Punjab Police and a member of its Elite Force, tried to justify his murder of the governor by stating that he had killed him for supporting Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman whom Taseer had believed had been wrongly convicted of committing blasphemy.
Terror in the courts
Qadri’s trial has remained a controversial one, with violent protests being taken out across Pakistan against the verdict.
Additionally, the Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Pervaiz Ali Shah who passed the death sentence for Qadri was transferred to Lahore on Friday amid protest from religious groups.
The ATC judge who had sentenced Malik Mumtaz Qadri, the assassin of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, was transferred to Child Protection Court Bureau in Lahore, merely a month after he was posted to Rawalpindi.
The judge had been unable to perform his duty due to the hostility of a certain group of lawyers and other religious groups who had been asking the authorities to hand Shah over to them.
The lawyers had earlier asked the government to transfer the judge to some other city. The Rawalpindi District Bar had passed a resolution giving a five-day deadline to the government. The decision came after the nationwide strike by religious parties on Friday.
This is the actual face of our free Judiciary…. unfortunately like our NAPAK ARMY our judiciary was also infested by JAMAT ISLAMI and other extremist terrorist groups…like Sipah A Sahaba…Wahabies and others..
The headline indeed says it all. An act, to borrow a phrase, that shall live in infamy. In this case twice or perhaps thrice over. I have wondered since the day the tragedy took place, why did the governors security detail not respond and kill the assassin. Perhaps they were complicit in the murder conspiracy. What administrative actions were initiated against the rest of the security detail. Did the prosecutors investigate charging other members of that detail with murder related charges. Were or should senior police and intelligence officers further up the chain of command not be held responsible for the terrible breakdown in command and control.
This is one of those (now-a-days not very infrequent) moments when one’s faith in ‘the rule of law’ gets shaken.
Even the confessed murderers have a right to be heard and judged in a court of law. This belief differentiates me from Mumtaz Qadri but when I see the different evidences of the judicial system’s indulgence in the social filth that they are supposed to judge independently, I become sad. This man today appearing for this monster was himself the chief of a judicial body. How might he have upheld the principles of justice then? Doesn’t it stupefy you?

My friend hakimullah mehsud ameer TTP wants a former chief justice to file a case against government for not implementing sharia in country, retired Judge must be from LHC and participated in lawyers movement. If judge does not give verdict in favor of TTP, we will pressurize government through lawyers to transfer that judge to North Waziristan.

Is this the judiciary we fought for? What a strange country! I had never thought Pakistan would become such a scary place to live in. If Qadri is released, no one will be safe. Pakistan will not become a more Islamic state if a killer is set free, it will simply become an abode for the terrorists, the intolerant, and the extremists. A free Qadri will become a pir for his followers, and our religious mentor. Is this what we want? Then goodbye to the minorities of Pakistan, goodbye to the white in our flag, and goodbye to Jinnah’s vision of the country. What a way for a dream to end!

What I fail to understand that Qadri, and other supporters of the controversial Blasphemy Law claim that they can take and give lives for the sake of this law and the Honour of the Prophet (peace be upon him). They have taken lives earlier. Qadri has taken Salman Taseer’s life. Now, it’s their turn to give their lives and prove their claim true. So wat’s the hullabaloo about? Why is Qadri appealing? Why all the so-called religious parties and s0-called Muslims are opposing the decision. It’s the golden chance to give your lives for the ‘noble’ cause. Go die! Simple.

It has proved time and againt that the independent judiciary is nothing but a bunch of fundamentalists. Judge Sharif should wait for two years before he starts private practice. All govt servansts are required that. This also proves that Punjab govt and Punjab HC is the most friendly place for the convicted terrorists. This is called good govt by Nawaz Sharif.

I salute the courage of LHC former CJ to accept publicly his imbecility and enmity against PPP as well as slain Salman Taseer. Or I reckon its another popularity stunt of the so called lawyers and Former LHC CJ to come into scene once again. Former LHC CJ was promoting terrorism and providing legal assistance to Lal Masjid people which should be unveiled to show his mindset..

I would also go on to say Khwaja Sharif would also be part of conspiracy against Salmaan Taseer. If one remembers, the the plot to kill Salmaan began in September 2010, when Ansar Abbasi came up with a story that KHwaja Sharif’s assassination was being plotted by a representative of the “federation” which in essence meant Salmaan Taseer. Khwaja Sharif lives. Nothing happened to him. The person who was killed was Salmaan Taseer and now Salmaan Taseer’s murderer will be defended by Khwaja Sharif. Sinister plot?

Naysayers will say that what’s wrong in an ex-judge appearing to defend someone in a court of law? Off course no problem in normal circumstances, but the issue here is that Khwaja Sharif was involved in freeing a number of jihadis and showed his soft corner towards extremists. Would our FCS trusted him then? Will they trust him today?
Former Chief Justice of Lahore High Court decides to defend the murderer, is it not insane?
Has anyone noticed that Jang newspaper has not published this news? Afterall, they were part and parcel of the plan to kill Salmaan Taseer
AOA All,
I appreciated the decision of Former Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Khawaja Sharif to defend the Malik Mumtaz Qadri and keep in mind Salmaan Taseer not Shaheed.
I like Former Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Khawaja Sharif to defend the Malik Mumtaz Qadri.
Is it an strange news?
Majority of Muslims supports Mumtaz Qadri,
@kashif Naseer. It is because of delusional, dumb-headed morons like you that this great country is being bracketed with Congo, Niger and Somalia. Look at your language, you donkey-eared dickhead. Javed Sheikh is “Mian Ji” and you are a 16 year old khilti kali! What a joke you are. It is also a sad commentary on the state of affairs at the Jamia Karachi that schmucks like you were at liberty to set foot in that prestigious institution. This is a specimen of your literary abilities:
“Is it an strange news?
Majority of Muslims supports Mumtaz Qadri.”
What the heck is this? The use of “an” with “strange” is hilarious, to say the least.
The word “majority” is singular, but the sentence “majority of Muslims supports” looks weird because the singular verb precedes the plural noun.
In the English language, a plural verb is invariably used if the real subject of the sentence is the people: “The majority of Muslims agree with the Fatwa.” However, if the subject is “the majority”, a singular verb is used: “The Party’s majority has grown in the Parliament.” A standard test to locate the real subject is to substitute the word “many” for “majority”. Let’s see how your sentence looks in the light of this test:
“Many of Muslims supports Mumtaz Qadri.”
By the way, how the hell do you know that the majority of Muslims supports (sic) Mumtaz Qadri? Can you quote any credible source in this regard? Or is it that your twisted mind just made it up?
Now let’s have a look at your prowess as an Urdu writer:
“Kuch to aqal ke nakhoon lo, Quaid-e-Azam ka naam istimal kar ke bakwas karni koi tum jaise ahmaqon ki dunya mein jeene wale dehrion se seekhe. Bhai sahab Quaid-e-Azam ne to khud Ghazi Ilam Din ka muqadama lar kar aik rivayat qaim ki thi aur Khawaja Sharif is rivayat ki taqlid hi to kar rahe hein. Aql ke nakhun lo Mian Ji.”
There is no “wow” in the word “nakhun”.You have no bloody sense of properly employing oqaf-o-ramooz or Urdu punctuation marks. A fourth grader could write better, sensible Urdu than this gibberish.
It is “bakwas karna”, not bakwas karni.
I contemptuously dedicate the following to you and others of your ilk:
Sitam ki aag ka eendhan bane dil phir se wa dilha
Ye tere sada dil bande kidhar jai’n khudawanda
Bana phirta hai har ik mudai paighambar tera
Har ik butt ko sanam khane mein dawa hai khudai ka
Khuda mehfooz rakhe az khudawandan-e-mazhab ha
Chala phir soo-e-gardoon karawan-e-nala-e-shab ha
In the past, Justice (retd) Sharif has made similar problematic decisions, such as barring President Zardari from pardoning a blasphemy accused Christian woman, an undue judicial intervention that was protested by international human rights organisations, and statements reeking of bigotry, such as his accusation that the Hindu community is behind acts of terrorism across Pakistan. While it is everyone’s right to be defended in a court of law, given the sensitive and high profile nature of Qadri’s case and given the special relations that Justice (retd) Sharif enjoys with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N’s) Sharif brothers, the announcement by Justice (retd) Sharif should be a matter of grave concern to the PML-N in general and its popular leader, Nawaz Sharif, in particular. Justice (retd) Sharif was appointed by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif as Advocate General Punjab in May 1997 and was elevated as a judge in the LHC in May 1998. The close relations between Justice (retd) Sharif and PML-N’s Sharif brothers have been illustrated in detail by none else than Justice (retd) Khawaja Sharif himself in his travelogue titled Shakh-e-Nazuk Kay Ashiyanay.
