I have been a long admirer of Javed Hashmi particularly because of his principled stance against General Musharraf and Pakistan army, and his reconciliatory approach to other political parties including the Pakistan Peoples Party. However, the words that he uttered today in the National Assembly have further increased the respect that I have for this veteran politician in my heart.

Here is a brief profile of Hashmi taken from wikipedia and other websites:

After the overthrow of the PML-N government in 1999 in a coup d’état staged and led by then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army General Pervez Musharraf, Hashmi was thrown in Central Jail Rawalpindi, along with Nawaz Sharif and other members of his party on false accusations made by General Pervez Musharraf. A democracy activist, Hashmi became one of the most vocal and open critic of the General Pervez Musharraf’s military regime where he openly criticized General Musharraf’s policies on War on Terror and his political adventurism.

On 29 October 2003, he was arrested from Parliament Building on charges of inciting mutiny made by General Pervez Musharraf. Earlier, in a press conference on 20 October, 2003, he had read a letter that he received in mail, signed anonymously by some active military officers at Pakistan Army’s Combatant Headquarters, known as The General Headquarters (GHQ), calling for an investigation into the corruption in the armed forces and criticizing the President and Chief of Army Staff General Pervez Musharraf, and his relationship with the American President George W. Bush. His trial was held in the central Adiala Jail instead of a district and sessions court at the Lahore High Court, which raised doubts among human rights groups about its fairness. On 12 April 2004, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for inciting mutiny in the army, forgery, and defamation. The verdict has widely been considered as a willful miscarriage of justice by the General Pervez Musharraf’s Government. All opposition parties in Pakistan, including Pakistan Peoples Party of the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and six party-alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), regarded the verdict to be politically motivated by the ruling junta with malicious intent, declaring him to be a political prisoner.[3] In imprisonment he also wrote two books titled as “Haan, Main Baaghi Hoon!” (Yes, I am a ‘Rebel!’) and “takhta daar ke saaye tale” (Under the Stage’s shadow). His book, “Yes, I am a ‘Rebel’!”, Hashmi clearly stated that he was jailed because he demanded a commission to be formed to investigate the Kargil issue, the restoration of democracy and opposed the Army’s role in politics, and Pakistan’s geo-strategy policy in central Asia and Europe. It was only on 3 August 2007, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan under restored Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry granted him bail after serving approximately three and a half years in prison.

In the 2008 general and parliamentary elections, Javed Hashmi won a record three seats out of the four contested; he won National Assembly seats from Multan, Lahore and Rawalpindi beating PML-Q leader Shaikh Rasheed Ahmad in the latter one. Despite winning 3 seats in 2008 elections, Hashmi refused to take oath from President Musharraf and thus did not get a place in the federal cabinet. Hashmi was one of the few people who decided not to take oath as it was against his principle.

Javed Hashmi offered a very strong reaction to the ISPR press release on Kerry-Luger bill. He commented in Parliament that Army should remain within its limit and not interfere in government issues.

There is a dearth of political activists and parliamentarians in Pakistan today who are honest and brave enough to criticize their own party and leadership on principles. Hashmi is clearly an exception as is evident from the following statement:

The leader of PML(N) Makhdoom Javed Hashmi has said that Mian Nawaz Sharif should tender apology from the nation to support martial law of General Zia-ul-Haq.

Speaking to the National Assembly he expressed his reservations about the future of Pakistan , if new provinces were not made in time by saying that the map of the country could be changed before next general elections in case the decision of making more federating units would be delayed further and the whole nation would be held responsible for it .

He said that it is unfortunate that so far policies could not be formed to run the country even after lapse of six decades. “ We have disintegrated the country but did not offer the rights to Bengalis . The same position prevails in Punjab where only a Chief Secretary and one IG rules over the population of 100 million. The imposing of martial law is easy in presence of big Punjab as army thinks that they have the backing of largest province of the country and in the process the small provinces have to face the dare consequences.

“The time has come to make more provinces as voices from several quarter has been raised and now political parties have accepted this too, but PML(N) has objections on it .We don’t want to give rights to small provinces. The country can not be survived if more provinces were not made”, he added.

He said that India also understood the fact as she is making more provinces . Punjab is not valued so much to us as Pakistan. He said that it is not the fight of gaining powers but it is the endeavor to safe Pakistan.

While commenting on Presidential address to the Parliament , Makhdoom said that to understand the politics of President Zardari, one has to acquire Ph.D degree.

He said that the leadership of the country is not moving towards right direction that is addressing the real issues . The intensity of target killing has been increased to that level that important people are being killed today. The plight of law and order is deteriorating in entire country . No city in Pakistan can be termed the cradle of peace.

The senior leader of PML(N) was of the view the worsening of law and order situation in the country is the ample proof of government’s failure. This is not only the matter of Federal government but Punjab has also same sort of condition. It is very easy that federal government put the blame on Punjab government and PML(N)would throw debris on PPP because the blame game is most simple to play.

He said that Pakistan currently is tangled in global challenges . Admiral Mollen issued order to the country that what she should do. The foreign interventions in state affairs is increasing day by day.

“I beg apology from the whole nation to be the part of Zia-ul-Haq’s government. Nawaz and Shabaz should also do the same. Every one felt sorry on the punishment of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto . The country has not produced other great leader like him so far”, he added .

He said that the those who changed their loyalties in the name of corruption were proven more corrupt than those who did not change their parties. “Was Musharraf government so much pious that even one case could not be registered against them”, he asked .

He said that now the country will has to adopt the system of service to the people but for this the entire leadership should bring their whole money from abroad . He told the house that he did not ask once for the party ticket and if in future his party will not give it to him , he will not contest elections. (Source)

ہاشمی کا مشورہ

پاکستان مسلم لیگ (ن) کے پارلیمانی لیڈر مخدوم جاوید ہاشمی نے کہا ہے کہ پاکستان کو بچانے کے لیے سرائیکی، بہاولپور اور ہزارہ سمیت مزید صوبے بنائیں اور میاں نواز شریف کو ضیاءالحق سے تعاون اور پرویز مشرف سے معافی مانگ کر ملک سے باہر جانے پر قوم سے معافی مانگنی چاہیے۔

یہ بات انہوں نے جمعرات کو قومی اسمبلی میں صدر آصف علی زرداری کے پارلیمان سے خطاب پر بحث کا آغاز کرتے ہوئے اپنی تقریر میں کہیں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ پنجاب کی آبادی دس کروڑ ہوگئی ہے اور انتظامی طور پر ممکن ہی نہیں کہ ایک انسپیکٹر جنرل پولیس اور چیف سیکریٹری عوام کو سہولت دے سکیں۔

مخدوم جاوید ہاشمی نے کہا کہ ‘صوبے بنانا کوئی گناہ نہیں ۔۔ہمیں پنجاب سے زیادہ پاکستان پیارا ہے۔۔ سرائیکی، بہاولپور اور پوٹوہار صوبے بننے چاہیے۔ ’پنجاب کے بڑے صوبے ہونے کی وجہ سے ہی مارشل لا لگتے ہیں کیونکہ فوج میں اکثریت پنجاب کی ہے اور وہ ان کے خلاف نہیں اٹھتے۔ ان کے بقول صوبہ خیبر پختونخواہ کا بھی فوج میں حصہ ہے لیکن بلوچستان اور سندھ بھگتے ہیں۔

’ہم نے ملک توڑ دیا لیکن بنگالیوں کا مطالبہ نہیں مانا۔۔ بلوچستان میں بھی حالات خراب ہیں اور چند برسوں میں وہاں خون کی ندیاں بہیں گی۔‘

انہوں نے کہا کہ ضیاءالحق کی کابینہ میں شمولیت پر وہ آج تک شرمندہ ہیں اور وہ اس غلطی پر پوری قوم سے معافی مانگتے ہیں۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ وہ اپنی جماعت کے قائد میاں نواز شریف اور میاں شہباز شریف سے بھی کہتے ہیں کہ وہ ضیاءالحق سے سیاسی تعاون اور پرویز مشرف سے سزا معاف کرواکر دس برس کے لیے باہر چلے جانے پر قوم سے معافی مانگیں۔

جاوید ہاشمی کے اس مطالبے پر اپوزیشن لیڈر چوہدری نثار علی خان جو اپنے چیمبر میں بیٹھے تھے وہ تیز تیز چلتے ہوئے ایوان میں آئے اور اپنی جماعت کے خواجہ آصف اور سردار مہتاب عباسی سے کھسر پسر کی اور ایوان سے باہر چلے گئے۔ بظاہر ایسا لگا کہ وہ شہباز شریف کو رپورٹ دینے گئے ہیں۔

جاوید ہاشمی نے میاں نواز شریف کی جلاوطنی کے دوران پارٹی کو سنبھالا اور پرویز مشرف پر کڑی تنقید کی وجہ سے بغاوت کے مقدمے میں جیل چلے گئے۔ اس دوران چوہدری نثار علی خان اپنے گھر میں نظر بند رہے۔ جب سنہ دو ہزار آٹھ میں انتخابات ہوئے تو جاوید ہاشمی کے بجائے پارٹی میں چوہدری نثار کی اہمیت بڑھ گئی اور ہاشمی پیچھے چلے گئے۔ ان کے بعض ساتھیوں کے بقول پارٹی میں نظر انداز کیے جانے پر انہیں گزشتہ برس برین ہیمرج ہوگیا۔

جاوید ہاشمی جو آج کل بھی کافی کمزور ہیں انہوں نے اپنی لرزتی آواز میں چوہدری نثار اور خواجہ آصف کی طرف دیکھتے ہوئے کہا کہ ‘مجھے اپنی پارٹی نے کہا کہ مشرف سے حلف لیں اور وزیر بنیں، میں نے انکار کیا اور کہا کہ میں مر جاؤں گا مشرف سے حلف نہیں لوں گا۔‘

انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ سرائیکی علاقے میں لوگ کہتے ہیں کہ جب رائےونڈ (شریف برادران کی رہائش گاہ) کی ایک سڑک پر دس دس ارب روپے خرچ ہوں گے تو دوسرے علاقوں کا کیا بنے گا؟۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ وہ والدین کے بعد اگر کسی کی موت پر زیادہ روئے ہیں تو وہ بینظیر بھٹو کے قتل پر روئے اور آج تک وہ انہیں یاد کرکے رو پڑتے ہیں۔ ’میں بھٹو کو شہید مانتا ہوں اور بینظیر بھٹو بھی شہید ہیں۔‘

انہوں نے کہا کہ انہیں صدر آصف علی زرداری کی سیاست سمجھ نہیں آتی اور اس کے لیے انہیں پی ایچ ڈی کرنی پڑے گی۔ ’میں اپنی جماعت کی قیادت سے بھی یہی کہتا رہا اور آج دیکھیں کون کہاں ہیں۔‘

ملتان کے مخدوم جاوید ہاشمی نے کہا کہ جس بھی سیاسی جماعت کے رہنما کی بیرون ملک ملکیت اور بینک اکاؤنٹ ہیں وہ پاکستان میں لائیں یا پھر پاکستان کی قیادت چھوڑ دیں۔ ان کی تقریر کے دوران ایوان کی دونوں جانب تمام جماعتوں کے ارکان ڈیسک بجاتے رہے۔

اپنی جماعت کی قیادت پر ہلکی پھلکی تنقید کے بعد انہوں نے کہا کہ پہلے کبھی پارٹی کو ٹکٹ کے لیے کہا اور نہ اب کہیں گے۔ ’ بھلا ہوا میری گھگری پھوٹی میں پانیہ بھرن سے چھوٹی۔‘

پارلیمان کے مشترکہ اجلاس سے صدر کے خطاب پر بحث کے دوران جاوید ہاشمی کی تقریر کا جواب دینے کے لیے پیپلز پارٹی کے ندیم افضل چن نے کہا کہ ان کی دعا ہے کہ جاوید ہاشمی کی سوچ ان کی جماعت کی بھی ہوجائے۔ انہوں نے جاوید ہاشمی کو اپنی قیادت پر تنقید کے حوالے سے مشورہ دیتے ہوئے کہا‘ زندگی اتنی غنیمت تو نہیں جس کے لیے۔۔ عہدِ کم ظرف کی ہر بات گوارا کرلیں’۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ میاں نواز شریف کو رائےونڈ میں قید کیا گیا ہے اور انہیں اسمبلی میں آنے نہیں دیا جاتا۔’ہم پر تنقید ہوتی ہے کہ امریکہ سے ڈکٹیشن لیتے ہیں لیکن کوئی سعودی عرب کی معرفت امریکی ڈکٹیشن لیتا ہے۔۔ کاش کوئی سعودی عرب سے کہے کہ پیغام رسانی بند کرو۔‘

انہوں نے پنجاب حکومت پر سستی روٹی کے تندور قائم کرنے پر کافی تنقید کی اور طنز کیا کہ لگتا ہے کہ آئندہ انتخابات میں ان کا انتخابی نشان بھی تندور ہوگا۔ ‘انہوں نے تین سال تندور پر لگادیے، گڈ گورننس، احستاب، پی سی او جج، میثاق جمہوریت سمیت ان کا سب کچھ تندور ہے۔جس پر ایوان میں قہقہہ پڑ گیا اور خود مسلم لیگ (ن) کے ارکان بھی ہنستے رہے۔
