Salute to Javed Hashmi
I have been a long admirer of Javed Hashmi particularly because of his principled stance against General Musharraf and Pakistan army, and his reconciliatory approach to other political parties including the Pakistan Peoples Party. However, the words that he uttered today in the National Assembly have further increased the respect that I have for this veteran politician in my heart.
Here is a brief profile of Hashmi taken from wikipedia and other websites:
After the overthrow of the PML-N government in 1999 in a coup d’état staged and led by then Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army General Pervez Musharraf, Hashmi was thrown in Central Jail Rawalpindi, along with Nawaz Sharif and other members of his party on false accusations made by General Pervez Musharraf. A democracy activist, Hashmi became one of the most vocal and open critic of the General Pervez Musharraf’s military regime where he openly criticized General Musharraf’s policies on War on Terror and his political adventurism.
On 29 October 2003, he was arrested from Parliament Building on charges of inciting mutiny made by General Pervez Musharraf. Earlier, in a press conference on 20 October, 2003, he had read a letter that he received in mail, signed anonymously by some active military officers at Pakistan Army’s Combatant Headquarters, known as The General Headquarters (GHQ), calling for an investigation into the corruption in the armed forces and criticizing the President and Chief of Army Staff General Pervez Musharraf, and his relationship with the American President George W. Bush. His trial was held in the central Adiala Jail instead of a district and sessions court at the Lahore High Court, which raised doubts among human rights groups about its fairness. On 12 April 2004, he was sentenced to 23 years in prison for inciting mutiny in the army, forgery, and defamation. The verdict has widely been considered as a willful miscarriage of justice by the General Pervez Musharraf’s Government. All opposition parties in Pakistan, including Pakistan Peoples Party of the former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and six party-alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), regarded the verdict to be politically motivated by the ruling junta with malicious intent, declaring him to be a political prisoner.[3] In imprisonment he also wrote two books titled as “Haan, Main Baaghi Hoon!” (Yes, I am a ‘Rebel!’) and “takhta daar ke saaye tale” (Under the Stage’s shadow). His book, “Yes, I am a ‘Rebel’!”, Hashmi clearly stated that he was jailed because he demanded a commission to be formed to investigate the Kargil issue, the restoration of democracy and opposed the Army’s role in politics, and Pakistan’s geo-strategy policy in central Asia and Europe. It was only on 3 August 2007, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan under restored Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry granted him bail after serving approximately three and a half years in prison.
In the 2008 general and parliamentary elections, Javed Hashmi won a record three seats out of the four contested; he won National Assembly seats from Multan, Lahore and Rawalpindi beating PML-Q leader Shaikh Rasheed Ahmad in the latter one. Despite winning 3 seats in 2008 elections, Hashmi refused to take oath from President Musharraf and thus did not get a place in the federal cabinet. Hashmi was one of the few people who decided not to take oath as it was against his principle.
Javed Hashmi offered a very strong reaction to the ISPR press release on Kerry-Luger bill. He commented in Parliament that Army should remain within its limit and not interfere in government issues.
There is a dearth of political activists and parliamentarians in Pakistan today who are honest and brave enough to criticize their own party and leadership on principles. Hashmi is clearly an exception as is evident from the following statement:
The leader of PML(N) Makhdoom Javed Hashmi has said that Mian Nawaz Sharif should tender apology from the nation to support martial law of General Zia-ul-Haq.
Speaking to the National Assembly he expressed his reservations about the future of Pakistan , if new provinces were not made in time by saying that the map of the country could be changed before next general elections in case the decision of making more federating units would be delayed further and the whole nation would be held responsible for it .
He said that it is unfortunate that so far policies could not be formed to run the country even after lapse of six decades. “ We have disintegrated the country but did not offer the rights to Bengalis . The same position prevails in Punjab where only a Chief Secretary and one IG rules over the population of 100 million. The imposing of martial law is easy in presence of big Punjab as army thinks that they have the backing of largest province of the country and in the process the small provinces have to face the dare consequences.
“The time has come to make more provinces as voices from several quarter has been raised and now political parties have accepted this too, but PML(N) has objections on it .We don’t want to give rights to small provinces. The country can not be survived if more provinces were not made”, he added.
He said that India also understood the fact as she is making more provinces . Punjab is not valued so much to us as Pakistan. He said that it is not the fight of gaining powers but it is the endeavor to safe Pakistan.
While commenting on Presidential address to the Parliament , Makhdoom said that to understand the politics of President Zardari, one has to acquire Ph.D degree.
He said that the leadership of the country is not moving towards right direction that is addressing the real issues . The intensity of target killing has been increased to that level that important people are being killed today. The plight of law and order is deteriorating in entire country . No city in Pakistan can be termed the cradle of peace.
The senior leader of PML(N) was of the view the worsening of law and order situation in the country is the ample proof of government’s failure. This is not only the matter of Federal government but Punjab has also same sort of condition. It is very easy that federal government put the blame on Punjab government and PML(N)would throw debris on PPP because the blame game is most simple to play.
He said that Pakistan currently is tangled in global challenges . Admiral Mollen issued order to the country that what she should do. The foreign interventions in state affairs is increasing day by day.
“I beg apology from the whole nation to be the part of Zia-ul-Haq’s government. Nawaz and Shabaz should also do the same. Every one felt sorry on the punishment of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto . The country has not produced other great leader like him so far”, he added .
He said that the those who changed their loyalties in the name of corruption were proven more corrupt than those who did not change their parties. “Was Musharraf government so much pious that even one case could not be registered against them”, he asked .
He said that now the country will has to adopt the system of service to the people but for this the entire leadership should bring their whole money from abroad . He told the house that he did not ask once for the party ticket and if in future his party will not give it to him , he will not contest elections. (Source)

Stung by the pang of conscience on siding with General Ziaul Haq in his government, Hashmi said he sought pardon from nation, National Assembly and the future generations, urging all the politicians including Sharif brothers to do the same.
‘I am ashamed of being the part of Ziaul Haq’s cabinet,’ said Hashmi.
He further said, ‘The country will fall apart if we do not seek pardon from the nation.’
Commenting on Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, PML-N leader said, ‘I think the national history has not witnessed a leader greater than Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto.’
Hashmi said he wept at the assassination of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto after the demise of his parents.
Speaking at the NA floor, he urged the provinces to delegate powers to district governments.
Advocating more provinces in the country including Punjab, N-League leader said, ‘Punjab is not dearer (to me) than Pakistan.’
He underscored the need to amend the Constitution to allow senators to take part in contest for premiership.
‘We will have to formulate a national policy instead of holding a sngle policy accountable,’ Hashmi stressed
The killings of vital personalities were starting in Karachi and law and order situation has assumed grave proportion in the country, he maintained.
He informed the House that at least 1400 incidents of robberies took place in the city of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Though he has said the right thing, he is marginalized in his own party especially at the hands of the Central PUnjab walas like Ch. Nisar, Ahsan Iqbal, Khwaja Asif etc. He may have said this as elections are approaching in the next couple of years and with the PPP promising a Siraiki province, he wouldnt want to be sidelined from his province for being part of the PML-N that will be the biggest loser if it opposes the Siraiki province.
In any case, it is a great thing that he has said.
Wow!
My Position: I’m not going to salute Javed Hashmi just because I believe he’s an establishment’s man, and his politics solely depends on towing the establishment line. He should have been advised when Mian Nawaz Sharif was in exile, he is in fact PMl-N’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi, see and read all his Gharat mand messages and his style of internal dissent. He is attempting last effort to become National Gharat mand pro people leader, but i’m not sure about his success.

Roar of a baghi against political dynasties
Saeed Minhas
ISLAMABAD: Finally the roaring of a forgotten lion of Nawaz League rocked the Parliament House on Thursday as an ailing Javed Hashmi showed not only his party but all the all fellow parliamentarians the courage to speak in the face of their political masters that political slavery unleashed by powerful political dynasties can not only be challenged but is bound to make way for more mature and nationalist leadership.
But will it be possible for Sharifs or for that matter many others who have served under Junejo’s Ziaul Haq-controlled set up, including our Premier Gilani or Sharifs whose political birthplace remained General Jilani’s barracks in Lahore to be as open hearted as Javed was when he apologised to the nation for having served under a dictatorial setup in the past.
Will it be possible for Syed Munnawar Hassan (Jamaat-e-Islami), Maulana Fazalur Rehman (JUI), Maulana Sameeul Haq (JUI), Chaudhrys of Gujrat, Saifullahs, Abbassis, Pagaros, many Shahs from Sindh, Magsis, Balochs, Khans to name but the few to stand up and apologise to this nation for siding with successive dictators without any remorse and subjecting them to severe mental, physical, economic and more importantly ideological hardships.
Will this cry of sanity remain a call of a Baghi (rebel, as he wrote in his book Main Baghi Hoon or I am a rebel) or will our political and religious monarchs take some cue from here, remained an open question after Hashmi’s outburst on Thursday begging for an answer from all those who at one or the other time have aided or abetted dictators in this land of the pure?
Since there is hardly any room left to distinguish between the rightist or leftist politicians or politics and because the lines have become so blurred between the two schools that everything these days is seen more from the prism of believer or non-believer angles therefore it’s more a question of morality than ideology. With the fall of first drop of rain, let’s hope that rain will follow, the sooner the better.
If Hashmi was magnanimous towards Bhuttos by showering praises on them—despite the historic fact that he was one of those few Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT) youngsters who had joined Tehrik-e-Istiqlal to be part of the famous Nine-Star-Movement which ultimately caused the downfall of Zulfiqar Bhutto in 1977 at the hands of General Ziaul Haq—then his venom towards his own party Sharifs was so obvious yet shocking to many stalwarts of his own party that Chaudhry Nisar, Khawaja Asif and many others did not even lend him any hand when he started limping out of the House after finishing his blistering speech.
What can we expect from a person who happens to be perhaps one of the very few in the entire outfit of Sharifs and their stalwarts who spent almost four years behind bars for delivering a speech against the then military dictator President General Musharraf and was booked under treason charges at secretariat police station Islamabad in 2003 and was released in 2007 through court orders.
Unlike many leaguers, including his party chief Nawaz Sharif, he neither accepted the plea bargain nor decided to fine-tune his relations with a dictator and resultantly was neither given the luxury of exile in Saudi palaces where he could easily have benefited from something like Azizia Steel Mills or helped his kins become one of the top 10 real estate investors in London nor was granted freedom and an ultimate cabinet slot like many Que Leaguers, Maulanas or turn-coats did soon after the 1999 military coup. Though Hashmi quoted the figures of Sharifs royal style spending on Lahore roads while ignoring the forgotten lands and people of Southern Punjab but he also expressed complete annoyance with the way federation and his own party was dealing with the issue of provincial subjects and creation of new federating units.
Many a things which he did not say on the floor could be heard in the corridors as his followers were exchanging them openly such as spendthrift nature of Sharifs in Punjab and a prime example of which was almost Rs 22 billion loss to the provincial kitty in the name of Sasti Roti (subsidised bread) and sugar and then the exuberant launch of Danish Schools while ignoring thousands of public schools which could have been easily upgraded with much little money but some vision.
Many Nawaz Leaguers, wished not be quoted, admired Hashmi’s courage by revealing that fissures within their party might come to surface now. There have already been mini revolts within the party against the dictatorial policies of Sharifs and Chaudhry Nisar but now parliamentarians are feeling left out by not only the party’s leadership but by their kitchen cabinet members who hardly let even the elected representatives know anything of substance. If we go to their Raiwind palace then either it’s the former Captain or the Dars we have to pass through or if we go to Chakwal then either it’s the Khawajas or some Rajas we have to palm through to meet our party leaders, said an emotionally charged leaguer.
When everyone was expecting Hashmi to be picked up for his heroic struggle for a cabinet slot, chipped in another one, he was ignored by Sharifs but later when commotion within party became visible he was included in the first phase of the cabinet which joined PPP government in 2008.
However, due to his principled stand Hashmi refused to take oath from a military dictator, thus easing the nerves of Sharifs and many others, he added. However, when the party decided after numerous political summersaults and after getting ditched by President Zardari on number of occasions to sit on the opposition benches, Hashmi was again ignored for the slot of leader of opposition.
This political ignorance on the part of party leadership where Hashmi was not even considered worthy enough to join the party’s policy making group is visibly the cause of brain hemorrhage and ultimate paralysis, some of them commented while standing in the corridors to welcome their hero.
Why more than two dozen elected representatives chose to welcome their hero in the shadows and not on the floor of the House pretty much sums up the democratic nature of this party, said another N Leaguer from Southern Punjab. A party where even its own constitution is not adhered to and a title of party Quaid is created without any consultation with the file and rank and where entire party structure stand dissolved without any new setup, leadership is bound to get these kind of reactionary but logical criticism, commented another one standing in the que to honour the man who was barely able to drag his paralyses-hit leg and move on towards exit with pride and satisfaction written large on his shiny face.
If that was not enough to rub the salt in their wounds than continuous thumping of desks by the ruling party must have been felt by Nawaz loyalists, said a Jiyala MP with an obvious broad smile on his face but he too did not realise that Hashmi was not only criticising his party but was lashing equally hard at the underworld style of politics and governance unleashed by the current leadership of Peoples Party.

Hashmi wants Sharifs` apology, calls for up to 16 provinces
By Raja Asghar
ISLAMABAD, April 21: Senior PML-N figure Javed Hashmi seemed mutinous in the National Assembly on Thursday, though differently from when he was once charged in a court, as he asked party leader Nawaz Sharif to apologise for accepting a Saudi exile for a pardoned conviction. He proposed splitting up the country’s four provinces in up to 16 for good administration.
And in a speech that could rattle his colleagues in the country’s main opposition party, the ailing politician also offered a rare tribute to President Asif Ali Zardari’s political shrewdness, a day after they were seen up in arms against him in the house, saying one needed a doctorate to comprehend the moves of the man who also leads the ruling PPP.
Speaking in a debate on last month’s annual presidential address to parliament, Mr Hashmi said he felt ashamed up to now for accepting a ministry for some time in early 1980s under military ruler Gen Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq, adding that for that “I apologise today to all”, and asking other politicians should do the same for their association with dictators.
“I will ask Nawaz Sharif that for 10 years he was made unable … (to play politics), he should apologise to the nation and Shahbaz Sharif should also apologise,” he said in a clear reference to the Dec 2000 deal under which then military president Pervez Musharraf said he had released the PML-N leaders in exchange for a 10-year exile in Saudi Arabia.
The government then said the deal, brokered by the Saudi royal family, had committed both Mr Nawaz Sharif and his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif, to abstain from taking part in politics for 10 years. But both brothers have persistently denied making such a commitment, though critics have attributed the elder Sharif’s refusal to contest for a National Assembly seat until now as a compliance of that deal, which must have run out in December 2010.
Mr Hashmi led the party as acting president in the absence of the Sharif brothers before a court convicted him for mutiny in April 2004 for allegedly seeking to instigate an army mutiny by addressing a news conference in the parliament building the previous year.
In what could be another dig at Sharif brothers for their acceptance of exile in return for release from jail, he said in his speech: “This nation needs leaders who are ready to die for it, who are ready to give their blood.”
Mr Hashmi’s call for the creation of more provinces, especially in the most populous province of Punjab, is also likely to cause unease in the PML-N, which has opposed similar demands from several groups in the past, including one for a Seraiki-speaking southern Punjab and one of the former Bahawalpur princely state.
As he was justifying the creation of more provinces – he said they could be up to 15 or 16 – to facilitate administration, opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was seen escorting young party lawmaker Hamza Sharif, son of the Punjab chief minister, to empty benches on the government side, where the two remained closeted for quite some time, probably discussing the sidelined elderly politician’s move, which was greeted with cheers from many PPP lawmakers from southern Punjab.
Mr Hashmi demanded the framing of an easy mechanism to create new provinces and said the process should not be delayed until the next assembly “lest you find the country’s map changed”.
But Mr Hashmi’s call for Nawaz Sharif’s apology seemed to be more shocking for his party as almost all its members, had left the house, as if for a meeting, when the debate on the presidential address was still in progress.
After referring to the 1979 execution of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and the Dec 2007 assassination of former prime Benazir Bhutto – calling both of them martyrs – Mr Hashmi said he had told “friends” they had to do a doctorate degree to “understand the politics of Asif” (Ali Zardari).
“Friends, you need a PhD degree for this,” he said, and added: “The way he has played the game of politics, no one else can.”
The remarks came only a day after PML-N lawmakers held their noisiest protest in the National Assembly marked by some harsh slogans against the president that were ordered expunged from the record of the proceedings by acting speaker Faisal Karim Kundi.

Hashmi statement regarding Nawaz, Shahbaz his personal opinion: Ahsan
South Asian News Agency (SANA) ⋅ April 22, 2011 ⋅
ISLAMABAD, (SANA: Secretary Information Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Ahsan Iqbal has said that the statement of Makhdoom Javed Hashmi about Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif, that Sharif brothers should apology from the Nation for living in exile during the Musharaf government, is the personal opinion of Javaid Hashmi.
Chaudhry Ahsan Iqbal said that their party is not an autocratic party, in which no one can say anything about the leadership. Only the president of party, secretary general and the spokesman of party enjoy authority for issuing official statement.
He said that in past a lot of party leaders already apologized for their previous acts. Musharaf forcibly exiled the Sharif brothers from the country, and the prove about it that whenever they tried to return Pakistan Mushrraf exiled them again forcibly.
He said that our party leadership already apologized from the Nation that they support the dictators in past, adding that in the Charter of Democracy (CoD) also apologized from the Nation about the mistakes of past. Javed Hashmi also asked the PPP leadership that they would have apologized for supporting the Ayyub government for ten years.
Ahsan Iqbal said that the Javed Hashmi is a senior party leader and every party member have his own opinion, adding that it is the beauty of PML(N) that everyone could express his views about the party and party leadership.
Ahsan Iqbal said that in my point of view that the Musharraf forcibly exiled Sharif brothers and their family and Mushrraf in his own speech accepted that he had exiled Sharif’s due to the anti-state activities of Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif. He said that Shahbaz Sharif once came back but he exiled again and Nawaz Sharif came with the help of Supreme Court but Musharraf government exiled him again.
http://www.sananews.net/english/2011/04/22/hashmi-statement-regarding-nawaz-shahbaz-his-personal-opinion-ahsan/
Javed Hashmi is the most decent man in PML N. But that does not say much as the PML N is the party of Talibani businessmen. He also is said to have executed a PPP activist in his youth as IJT activist.
I agree with Junaid . He should also advised Shahbaz Sharif to apologize for showing his sympathizes towards Taliban & supporting and pampering sectarian organization in punjab .
Apologizing for part of Zia ul Haq cabinet but what about zia ul haq legacy of sectarian hatred ?
So far, I have not seen any PPP leader offer an apology for:
1. ZAB’s participation in General Ayub’s cabinet;
2. ZAB’s support for military operations in East Pakistan and Balochistan;
3. General Nasirullah Babar’s role in manufacturing of the Taliban (during BB’s government).
etc.
In this context, I don’t have anything but good to say about the bold and honest Javed Hashmi.
Any party which has gems such as Hashmi in its ranks must feel extremely proud!
True .
It is easier and has become more than just a trend or a fashion to criticize past political mistakes and discuss former military dictators. Well, it is rather difficult to criticize present critical undemocratic realities, where army is still influencing on foreign to economic policies. It looks Mr Javed Hashmi is not reading these days, so therefore he could not read Wikileaks? and therefore he is not advising to our real masters that they should tender apology from the nation for their conspiracies against civilian government and head of the state. By the way, what’s his position on ISPR Press Release on Kerry Lugar Bill?
I am amazed and surprised to see that our politicians are just behaving like preachers giving sermons on high ethical political values. And acting like historians doing their work the historian’s way, and not doing their work as as legislators. Mr Javed Hashmi has been part of Parliament since 1985, may I ask how many bill he presented in the House for public interests? and what’s their nature? And how people benifited from it?
It’s good to discuss history and and take Lesson for future, but isn’t it dangerous living in the Past ? Surely it’s dangerous.
Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto had signed the Charter of Democracy with the PML-N. Both the parties had also apologised to the nation for their past mistakes. So it is very much closed transaction. Now new found hero of media should suggest to Chief Justice that he should tender apology from the nation for blocking 18th Amendment Bill and other chiefs for their backing to the undemocratic elements and anchors/journalists should also tender apology for spreading conspiracies. I Mean why only politicians?
Why not Bureaucrats, journalists, Army officers and Judges? Why should not all the judges who had taken an oath under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO).
I’m sure Mr Javed Hashmi will not speak full truth because he is artificial gem designed and crafted by establishment.
“Half-truths are very dangerous because something is true, and that something true may keep you hooked and you may never be able to know the lie.” OSHO
One more thing his approach is not reconciliatory towards the PPP, he supported PML-N’s decision to remove PPP ministers from the Punjab and even opposed opinion of his own daughter.
Javed Hashmi should come to forward, and believe me, he is the person, we all are looking for, he can lead this nation……….
i would simply say that javed hashmi has gone absurd

I also want to get the link of the speech javed hashmi delivered yesterday. Please! thanks.
I think he should be applauded for his speech about rangers killing.
for that matter even khwaja saad rafique should be appreciated, although it’s difficult to appreciate a bigot like khwaja saad rafique who takes part in pro blasphemy law rallies. unfortunately a lot of pml-n’s hostility to army is based on their vote base among jihadi right wing who sees army as bad only because it is acting against their beloved jihadis.
