Fake Civil Society (FCS) – by Shahid Khan

1. Civil Society, Real or Fake?

The current phenomenon of ‘civil society’ did exist in Pakistan during 1970s. It comprised of trade unions, lawyers, journalists, students organisations and rights groups. During General Zia’s persecution of the PPP and the left wing, the genuine civil society groups were ruthlessly crushed by the military establishment and puppets installed in the media, NGOs, and the JI and other right-wing activists were promoted to the rank of ‘civil society. The label of ‘civil society’ was thus expropriated by the urban middle class opportunists, for sale consultants and media advisers and the lackeys of the ISI and the JI.

What we have today is overly made-up aunties and Che T-shirt wearing urban middle class on the establishment’s payroll. They are afraid of mullahs because they fear their scotch and fun stuff will be taken away by their co-servants of the right-wing.

2. The PPP and the civil society are natural allies.

A naked lie. The PPP has been slaughtered at the hands of the military establishment. Its struggle is against powers of oppression. While the present, FAKE civil society of aunties, uncles and burgers has always been a partner of the establishment who have always shared the booty with their masters. Their interests are common, their socio-economic class, vocabulary, hobbies and lifestyle are common.

The Fake Civil Society’s (FCS) heroes are judges (Ifiakhar Chaudhry, Ramday) and generals (Hameed Gul, Kayani etc) who protect and promote extremism and are staunch enemies of the PPP and the people. The PPP’s heroes are ZA Bhutto and BB who were killed by judges and generals.

The PPP and the fake civil society do not share heroes and enemies; one’s enemy is other’s hero.

3. Civil Society and PPP can work together.

The present fake civil society is, for all practical purposes, establishment’s extension. Their main target is the PPP. They can back-stab but can never be PPP’s allies.

4. Should the PPP isolate itself from the civil society?

Another wrong premise. The PPP has always maintained strong bonds with the genuine civil society, not the fake civil society chatterers who are only to be found on facebook and Twitter, not in the streets, cities and villages of Pakistan.

i) The PPP Lawyers Wing has won every election from District Bar to Pakistan Bar and Supreme Court Bar against the establishment’s sponsored/Chief Justice /PTI group. The PPP has strong roots and support in the genuine civil society, i..e, society of the people of Pakistan, not fake society comprising a few dozen urban chatterers.

ii) The PPP has won every trade union election from the PIA, Steel Mills to Ittefaq Foundries. The labour, rickshaw, wagon, farmers union make biggest support base of the PPP.

iii) The PPP works closely with genuine Human Rights groups like HRCP, genuine journalists, students and women’s rights groups. As a matter of fact, the PPP has always recognised genuine rights workers and awarded medals/national honours to journalists, teachers, rights activists.

The Alliance?

We are willing to work with all groups, persons and organisations who genuinely believe that oppression cannot end unless the real architects of the oppression and religious extremism are identified, confronted and defeated. The judges and generals alliance, mullahs and extremism are just a creation of the dark forces of Aabpara, who have willing tools and naive fools as their operatives in Pakistan’s fake civil society.

We have a strong bond with genuine Civil Society. However, the establishment’s installed fake Civil Society cannot be our ally. Example are journalists and media groups voicing Taliban and Sipah-e-Sahaba, media persons and bloggers silent on the Baloch genocide and the Shia genocide, lawyers showering rose petals on shaheed Taseer’s murderer, fifth columnists drumming up “the-PPP-good-Zardari-bad” theory. They are on the other side of the divide.

That tiny, noisy crowd is FAKE, not genuine, civil society. They deserve neither alliance nor honour!
