The brainwashed killer of the assassinated Punjab’s Governor Salman Taseer has been turned into a hero, a defender of Islam’s sacredness, by the religious political parties, extremist groups and like-minded people especially in the mainstream media. The Namoos-e-Risalat Lawyers Forum (NRLF) showered flowers on Qadri when he was being brought to court under strict security and announced to fight his case free-of-cost.
Soon after Governor Taseer’s murder, some person in Pakistan created a fan page on Facebook to support Mumtaz Qadri and the page was joined by more than 12 000 people in less than 24 hours of its creation. This was followed by more fan pages for Mumtaz Qadri and the process is said to be continuing to the moment. The Facebook team, however, has removed the popular Qadri Facebook page from its site and more pages supporting Qadri are expected to be removed soon.
The response to Taseer’s murder among ordinary Pakistanis seemed divided. Some praised Qadri for targeting the governor, who in recent weeks had spoken forcefully in favor of clemency for a Christian woman sentenced to die for allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad(PBUH).
What’s frightening is that our mainstream media seems to be entirely confusing these things and it continues to spin different facts. Ms Meher Bokhari, in her popular [but irresponsible]talk show “News Beat” posed this question to nation that wheather he is hero or culprit? With all due respect, most of the media is still not understanding this latest mournful and pathetic event correctly, Salman Taseer’s tragic murder at the hands of his own security guard to avenge his bold stand on the Blasphemy Laws is not a single-day development. There is a history to it and unfortunately, there is a huge direct and indirect contribution by the state, non state forces, civil society, media, and political parties in promoting this monster and ignoring the repercussions of its creation.
