The kind of shameful propaganda that Benazir Bhutto had to fade would have broken most – men and women. She never asked for a single concession and her supporters voted for her because she was simply the best leader to them. IMO, the most courageous Pakistani leader. She made mistakes but never claimed to be flawless. It would be incorrect to compare IK and NS to her as they are nowhere near.

It would be remiss to ignore the vicious slander and the urban myths of elitist gatherings that that were regularly planted against Benazir Bhutto. One of the chief smut manufacturers is #HussainHaqqani and amongst Benazir’s mistakes, IMO, is to have forgiven this feckless scorpion and deserter. Even in 2012, he let then PM YRG take the fall for a controversy that centred around him.

That was Benazir Bhutto. While Pakistan’s elites regularly abuse ZAB and her, she took the high rode on US-backed General Zia’s death.

From tax reforms to tackling extremism to addressing provincial autonomy, Benazir was and is ahead of her times. Sadly it seems that Pakistan’s hopes died with her murder.

Some coincidences are intriguing.

It’s 21st June, Benazir Bhutto’s 65th birthday and today New Zealand Prime Minister Ms Jacinda Arden has given birth to a baby girl; first world leader after a long time to do so while in office. The first in the recorded history was Benazir Bhutto, who did it almost 3 decades earlier on 25 January 1990.

But it brings sad memories of how Pakistan treated her. She was hounded by male chuvinists and women alike on her way to motherhood. It was considered to be a lowly act, in a country where graceful women don’t show off openly their pregnant bump. It was said that she should not have had a child while in office.

Fearing that if she takes normal time away from office, the opposition would hasten their intrigues to topple her, she underwent an unplanned Caesarean section to ensure she continues her duties uninterrupted.

“The next day I was back on the job, reading government papers and signing government files,” she later wrote.

“Only later did I learn that I was the only head of government in recorded history actually to give birth while in office.

“It was a defining moment, especially for young women, proving that a woman could work and have a baby in the highest and most challenging leadership positions.”

But the birth of the daughter named “Bakhtawer” meaning “harbinger of luck” could not help her either. She was out of office on 06.08.1990 before her first birthday.

In comparison, the NZ PM is receiving felicitations from the world over and will have a maternity leave as usuak, not like “the daughter of the East” who could neither enjoy her pregnancy nor motherhood, although being not only the first democratically elected lady PM of a Muslim majority country but also the world’s first elected leader to give birth while in office.
