Pakistan teachers strike over kidnapped vice-chancellor
By M Ilyas Khan
BBC News, Islamabad
Teachers in the north-western Pakistani province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have gone on indefinite strike.
They want to put pressure on the government to negotiate the release of a university lecturer being held by the Pakistani Taliban.
Dr Ajmal Khan, the vice-chancellor of the Islamia College University in Peshawar, was kidnapped from his campus residence on 7 September.
On 7 October a video purportedly of him was released by the Taliban.
It showed Dr Khan appealing to the government to negotiate his release with members of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
He also appealed to the teacher and student community to put pressure on the government over his abduction.
The doctor made a similar appeal in another video released on Sunday.
In that he said that the Taliban had given him until 20 November to persuade the government to negotiate his release.
“If their [the TTP] demands are not accepted by 20 November, then I will not remain in this world,” he said in the video, reading from a written text in the Urdu language.
Senior members of Pakistan’s Teachers’ Association called an emergency meeting hours after the video was aired to declare an indefinite strike in universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – the province which until recently was known as North West Frontier Province.
The association said that if quick action was not forthcoming from the government, the strike may be extended to universities all over the country.
Reacting to the video, provincial information minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that his government would do everything to secure Dr Khan’s release.
“We have always done everything possible to secure the release of kidnapped persons, and we will do our best in this case as well,” he said in a press release issued on Sunday night.
The TTP have not made clear their demands, but it is understood they want the release of some of their detained leaders in return for Dr Khan’s release.

Emmon Khan:
Does the government of Pakistan and particularly the Pakistan army need any more reason to completely wipe out this menance of Talibanisation from the soil of Pakistan? How long are our brave army going to tolerate the brutalities and shamelesness of this bunch of terrorists? Do our valiant generals and army commanders still think of these enemies of the state of Pakistan who are doing nothing but playing havoc with the very roots of this country, as strategic assets in the great game? For God’s sake dear brave generals rescue this country and its hapless people in general and the Pukhtoons in particular of this menace of hate, biggotry and ignorance! You owe it to the state of Pakistan and to its people as the ultimate saviours and protectors of this country! Enough is enough. Wipe this menace out and take Pakistan and Pakistanis into the comity of enlightened, educated, developed and self-confident nations of the world! You owe it to the people of Pakistan, o, our brave and bright generals and soldiers!
Basharat:
How much stress this innocent scholar and his family, friends , the students are passing through , cannot be expressed in words. Imran Khan had been describing the terrorist attacks as a ,natural reaction to the American occupation . Is this Vice Chancellor , an American agent? The persons in authority should admit that something more is required to be done to curb the menace of terrorism .The people in Pakistan are in state of shock and feel themselves unsafe even in their own houses.
There is no rally , no one demanding his rescue and safety, only because he is a teacher and an innocent gentleman ? If he is killed , we all should be held accountable . Very poor show especially on the part of right wing parties who were very active for release of the daughter of pakistan , and for a vice chancellor , their is no activity even in the name sake . May God save this pious person.

Kidnapped vice chancellor appeals for help
The Footage shows Ajmal Khan sitting in front of a white backdrop with two armed militants standing behind him.
PESHAWAR:
Footage showing kidnapped vice-chancellor of the Islamia College University (ICU) Ajmal Khan was released on Thursday. In the video Ajmal Khan appeals to the government to accept the rebels’ demands to secure his release.
Ajmal Khan, a locally-renowned academic and a close ally of the ruling Awami National Party (ANP) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, was kidnapped on September 7.
In the video tape, aired by private TV channels GEO and ARY, Khan is shown wearing a traditional Pakhtun cap with a beard, and with two masked men holding Kalashnikov assault rifles standing behind him. Khan appeals to the government that he has been kidnapped by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) because he is related to ANP chief Asfandyar Wali. He goes on to appeal that the government should negotiate with the TTP and listen to their demands.
“I am a heart patient and cannot live here any longer. The government should do something for me and should negotiate with the Taliban,” Khan said in the video recording.
“The government should solve their problems (with the Taliban), if they have any,” he added.
An intelligence official in Peshawar said the professor was being held hostage in one of the lawless tribal areas where authorities have no access.
SP Campus Peace Corps (CPC) Ijaz Ahmed told The Express Tribune that the incident occurred at the Professors Colony area, near Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Agricultural University at around 9:30 am.
Security officials said Taliban insurgents have been using kidnapping as a ransom tool, and to bargain for the release of their militants being held by the authorities.

Following the release of a new video of kidnapped Vice Chancellor of the Islamia College University Ajmal Khan, the Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) has announced that all public universities will remain shut for an indefinite period.
PUTA President Johar Ali told The Express Tribune that public universities all over Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa will remain closed until the release of the captive professor.
The video, the second in less than a month, shows Khan sitting in front of three masked armed men with a mud wall in its background.
In the video, Khan said that his life was in danger and asked authorities to meet the militants’ demands till November 20 after which he would face death.
The VC said that the government, students and the ANP, should take interest in his release, while stressing that the first video showing that he had been abducted had no impact.
Khan also said the demands of the militants should be accepted by the government; otherwise he will have to face the consequences.
Earlier on October 14, the kidnappers had released another video asking the government to negotiate with the Taliban for Khan’s release.
Khan is one of the most prominent educationists of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and is also a cousin of Awami National Party (ANP) Chief Asfandyar Wali Khan. He was kidnapped from Professor Colony area situated close to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Agriculture University on September 7.
Earlier militants had kidnapped Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) VC Dr Lutfullah Kakakhel.
