Geo’s Priorities – Blast at Pakpattan’s Shrine is much lower in headlines than Babar Awan’s meeting with Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi

Bombs outside the shrine of Baba Gunj Shakar in Pakpattan killed six

When the PPP and the government complains of over focus on personalities by Geo and Jang Group, then these complains are backed by genuine grievance. The attack on Baba Farid Gunj Shakar’s shrine on October 25, 2010 in Pakpattan, 190 km from Lahore is the third attack on a major shrine after Data Ganj Bukhsh and Abdullah Shah Ghazi.

At least six people were killed while twenty others were injured in the explosion after dawn (Fajr) prayers at the at the shrine in Pakpatan. Two men riding a motorbike had left a milk container near the gate of the shrine in Pakpattan which is believed to have exploded in to a huge fireball, a witness had said.

What was surprising was to see the priorities of Geo News in bringing the meeting of Babar Awan with Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi as its headline. In the 9 pm bulletin, the first 18 minutes were kept for discussing the meeting as well as chants like “Sharam magar tum ko nahee aati” “Qatil League say mulaqat” and then in Aaj Kamran Khan Kay Saath, the first 24 minutes were spent on an interview with Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi and then Naheed Khan. Tapes of what Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi had said previously about MBB and Asif Zardari were repeated and what not.

The matter of meeting Chaudhry Pervez Ilahi and Babar Awan will be presented on this blog separately, but we ask again, where do the priorities of Geo lie? In inconsequential matters of a meeting or matters of life and death of many people who were either killed or injured in a blast of an esteemed Sufi?
