The myth of Pakistan’s Shia President Zardari

Asif Zardari and the Bhuttos are moderate Sunni Muslims, not Shia Muslims.

Contrary to the carefully crafted and propagated urban legend (misleading propaganda by the Takfiri Deobandi (Sipah Sahaba Taliban) lobby, their apologists and the PPP-phobes), PPP’s co-chairman President Asif Ali Zardari is not a Shia Muslim. Takfiri Deobandi militants and their apologists in Jamaat-e-Islami, PML-N, PTI etc often allege that Zardari himself is a Shia, therefore, either there can be no Shia genocide or the Shia themselves are responsible for (inaction on) their genocide.

This kind of (ill-intentioned) logic and discourse is deployed by the Sipah Sahaba Taliban apologists to obfuscate and hide Shia genocide in Pakistan. Here is an example in the shape of some comments on an article on Shia genocide in Express Tribune newspaper.

Ahmad: Pakistan is a country where have a shia president [Zardari] and a year back you had prime minister (Gilani]. The countries largest political party has a disproportionate Shia representation. MQM has a disproportionate shia representation. The bureaucracy of Pakistan has a disproportionate shia representation. The countries leading media outlets have a huge shia representation. Its a shame, that the scourge of terrorism which has mostly affected sunnis is misrepresented by shias as a genocide. If shias continue to misrepresent Pakistan then I am afraid that this would affect the sunni majority consensus towards shias. And this would inadvertently affect the sunni-shia relationship which could go horribly wrong for shias living in Pakistan.

TP: I have many shia’s in my family so don’t tell me you know more than anyone else! nor you are aware of the demographics of Pakistan nor you are aware of the fact that there are so many top positions held by shias in Pakistan! In genocide only one segment is targeted & that segment is not given equal opportunity nor they’re given lowest of lowest positions let alone important positions! Either you don’t live in Pakistan or believe in creating divisions just for fun! please get your facts right & get your definition of genocide right. in Syria you see a direct conflict between the alawites & sunnis, what’s that? is Pakistan army killing shia’s, or Hindus or Christians? Pakistan is no Syria, Kashmir, Israel-Palestine, etc where real genocide is going on (read about Bosnia then you’ll know what is genocide)! Pakistan is fighting with foreign funded groups who want to break up this country, if there was any discontent for shia community then why I never had any problem in my family? why shia’s are in Police, Army, Bureaucracy? Why Asif Zardari our president who is a Shia himself & ex-PM Gilani? Stop distorting facts & stoop inciting hatred by impersonating as a true Pakistani. As a matter of fact, President Zardari and former Prime Minister Gilani are Sunni Barelvis, not Shias. However, Takfiri Deobandi lobby treats Sunni Barelvis as polytheists (Mushrik) and Shias as infidels(kafir), hence continues to conflate these two sects as one sect when its comes to hate speech and violence. (It’s, therefore, no surprise that same Sipah Sahaba Taliban militants who kill Shias also kill Sunni Barelvis in Sufi shrines and Eid Milad processions.)

There is nothing wrong if Zardari (or anyone else) is a Shia, Sunni or belongs to whatever faith or sect. However, even if he were a Shia, he would be probably as irrelevant and helpless as any Muslim president in India (who could not save Muslims in Gujarat from violent Hindu mobs nor could bring the influential perpetrators (e.g. Modi) to justice) because Pakistani State continues to be dominated and ruled by Saudi-influenced pro-Deobandi-Salafist military establishment. Modi and likes of Bal Thackeray roam free in India, Ahmed Ludhianvi Deobandi, Orangzeb Farooqi Deobandi and Malik Ishaq Deobandi roam free in Pakistan.

Not unlike his wife (Benazir Bhutto) and father in law (Zulfikar Ali Bhutto), Asif Zardari is a moderate Sunni Sufi (Barelvi) Muslim who holds tolerant views towards all Islamic sects and non-Muslim communities. For example, in the following pictures, he is clearly seen offering prayers according to the Sunni sect, but also pays homage at the shrine of the granddaughter of the Prophett (s.a.w.w.) Hazrat Zainab (s.a.), which is consistent with the traditions of Sunni (not Wahhabi or Deobandi) Muslims and Shia Muslims.

We hope that one day President Zardari will free himself from his current state of spinelessness and apathy and deal with Takfiri Deobandi enemies of Pakistan with iron hands.
