PTI UK’s protest against President’s Visit; Look at the language used

I stumbled upon a press release of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf UK Chapter about a successful protest against President Zardari’s visit to the UK on Aug 03 2010 outside the Churchill Hotel in central London. According to the press release “The protestors chanted anti Zardari slogans and held placards which expressed their feelings of disbelief over the timing of his trip in the wake of floods back home & Prime Minister David Cameron’s comments in India.   The protest was at its peak when the President arrived at the Churchill hotel.” The press release also mentions that “the government is not seen to be providing any relief” which has seen more than 3 million people affected.

Fair enough, you have all the right in the world protest against a personality or if you do not believe in the politics of another person but what about the placards that were there? I for one can’t hear what slogans were chanted but what I can see from the placards are the following:

  • “Zardari na kar Pakistan say ghaddari”
  • “You are sucking the blood of Pakistanis”
  • “Is Pakistan Promoting Terrorism? Zardari do you agree with Cameron?”
  • “King of corruption”
  • “Mr 99%”
  • “King of thieves”
  • “Pakistan ka Mir Jaffer”
  • “Zardari-Part time president”
  • “No to fake degrees”  etc

I personally used to think that Imran Khan has at least attracted some tolerant and educated youth to his party (contrary to “civil society” belief that Imran Khan has all the educated youth is with him). Seeing these placards, I am quite ashamed. What surprised me most were the placards terming the President as “Mir Jaffar”. Also, the protest was not about the flood relief “inaction” but more personality driven.

I wonder what the onlookers would have thought about Pakistanis disgracing their own head of state.
