Shah Mahmood Qureshi – the man for all seasons

Let us look at the positives of Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s decision to resign from his position as a MNA on a PPP ticket and subsequently the party. He has done the honorable thing unlike the proverbial lotas of resigning and then to seek reelection. He has also given hope to a number of those who want the PPP government to be removed at all costs. These include the PML-N and Imran Khan who would love to use this opportunity to bash the PPP.
But in his charge-sheet against his party for the last two decades, he has said all that which the opposition and their media backers have been saying: Corruption and Bad Governance. Off course, there are not many questions to be asked from Shah Mahmood Qureshi as he is a seasoned politician and will have a response for everything. There is just one: Why everything after you were not given the position of Foreign Minister in the cabinet reshuffle on 10th February, 2011? Off course, his ghairat woke up and he has become part of the august company of real PPP walas who have been disgruntled by the “Zardari League”.
Some questions that one can ask but not ever get a response from Shah Mahmood Qureshi about his hypocrisy are:
- He has evoked memories of Shaheed MBB yet he has asked Ghinwa Bhutto to his Sindh rally in Ghotki. How does he reconcile the two?
- He criticizes President Zardari on Raymond Davis Issue but is silent on the NRO given to Davis by his real bosses, the ISI! Why all the silence here?
- He has or they hope that he joins or he is thinking of joining an anti-US party that thinks of itself as being anti-imperialism and then he expect us to forget that this son, Zain Qureishi was a staffer with Senator Kerry!
One last question, Qureshi sahab. You had on 1st March, 2011 in Multan said “I am not Leghari”. Can we know exactly what you are planning to do?
How is SMQ different from Farooq Leghari, Jatoi, Khar, Dr. Mubashir Hasan and Sherry Rehman?
In March 2011: He said he did not believe in conspiracies and only time will prove his loyalty to the PPP, adding he would remain in the party and ministry was not his destination.
Was he wrong then? or now?

Just a Reminder!
Following the removal and hanging of Bhutto, his father Sajjad Hussain supported the presidency of General Zia-ul-Haq and served as the Governor of Punjab from December 1985 to December 1988 under Zia.
Shah Mehmood Quraishi was first elected from PP-164 (Multan) in 1985, the elections held under the umbrella of a dictatorial regime on non-party basis and joined the Muslim League, political party revitalised by General Ziaul Haq having members from the legislators from the Senate, national and provincial assemblies. Pertinent to mention here is that Qureshi’s father was a close aide of dictator Ziaul Haq and was a member of the Senate and was made governor of the Punjab by General Ziaul Haq and remained in the office from December 1985 to December 1988.
The young Qureshi returned to Punjab legislature on a PML-N ticket from PP-166 (Multan) and served in the cabinet of Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif as minister for Planning and Development from November 30, 1988 to August 6, 1990.
He was a returned candidate also in 1990 elections from the same constituency but with changed loyalties as he had parted ways with the PML and served in Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo’s cabinet as the finance minister. He held this office till June 28, 1993. After this period the Qureshi of Multan challenged throughout his career Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, a towering leader of the PML-N, defeated him in the National Assembly elections.
