The militants attacked a convoy of vehicles near Charkhel village on Thall-Parachinar Road in Kurram Agency yesterday. The rebels kidnapped 8 drivers and two students and injured two persons during the attack.

The attackers also set five trucks and another vehicle on fire. Officials said the incident might have been a reaction to an attack on a passenger vehicle near Parachinar, the main town in Kurram Agency, on Saturday.

Militancy becomes big threat to students in Pakistani tribal area

ISLAMABAD, July 23 (Xinhua) — The hopes in the eyes of Syed Hassan, a 24-year-old Pakistani engineer, have almost been over taken by the frustrations as he could not visit his home in the country’s northwestern tribal region of Kurram for last five years due to the closure of the only road to his hometown by Taliban militants.

Hassan and many other students of his area, either it was hot around 40 degree or with heavy rains, have been sitting in a protesting camp in Pakistani capital Islamabad since April 21, to urge the government to take strict action against the militants.

The militants had paralyzed the whole area of Kurram, especially its regional capital Parachinar, by cutting its links with the other parts of the country and occupying the 70-km-long Thall-Parachinar road.

According to official figures, at least 64 students have been slaughtered or shot to death by the militants on the Thall- Parachinar road during last five years.

In the recent incident on July 17, some unknown miscreants abducted 11 people besides torching their five trucks and one passenger vehicle on the road. Three days later they released nine people alive but sent dead bodies of the other two students.

Senior analyst Naseem Anwar considered the killing of students as a special war strategy of the Taliban who have been adopting to spread fear and panic among youth so they may prolong their rule in the area.

If students are not able to return their homes, the career of the hundreds of other students, who wished to study in other big institutes of the country, have been put at stake as they could not move from Parachinar.

In the mid of year 2006, when Hassan left his home town Parachinar to study engineering in the Gomal University of Dera Ismail Khan he did not know that he would not be able to return home again.

Kurram, which is divided into three parts, lower, central and upper Kurram, has always been vital for the militants as it offers them an easy access to and from Afghanistan.

Hassan told Xinhua that after his departure Pakistani Taliban, who fled army actions and U.S. drone strikes in other tribal regions, entered the lower and central Kurram in 2006 and asked for support from locals in the form of cash, food and hideouts.

Taliban succeeded to win silent support from some terrorized locals but majority of them refused.

In early 2007 Taliban tried to penetrate into the upper Kurram, dominated by Shia Muslims, to get the hold of its head city of Parachinar but failed due to the unexpected armed reaction from the local tribes.

On April 6, 2007, in the first ever terrorist attack in the area unknown gunmen killed over 60 attendees of a religious gathering and injured around 200 others which later triggered sectarian violence between local Sunni and Shia Muslims.

After breaking the internal unity of the community Taliban sped up their brutal attacks killing over 2,000 people, injuring about 3,500 and displacing more than 6,000 families.

In October 2010, with efforts of a grand Jirga (tribal meeting), the Murree Peace Accord was inked to reopen the Thall-Parachinar road but unluckily on March 25 this year, miscreants ended the accord by killing 13 passengers and abducting 33 others on the road.

Ten days after militants entered a village and kidnapped 10 female students from their houses. Locals feared that militants might have been sexually assaulting those girls.

After the road once again went into the militants’ control the local tribesmen requested the Pakistani army for an immediate offensive. By accepting the request the army on July 1 launched Operation Clean-up against the Taliban militants in the region in which over 120 militants have been killed and dozens of others injured so far.

Though the army had forced militants to flee from some areas but Thall-Parachinar road is still in the control of miscreants who have been attacking civilians continuously.

Due to the closure of the road supply of daily life needs has been stopped to Parachinar and other areas of the upper Kurram which has multiplied the problems of the locals.

A student leader of the Kurram region, Ali Shah Kazmi, told Xinhua, “Our biggest issue of the time, other than food supply, is the stoppage of the medicine supply due to which at least average 8-10 children and 5-7 women facing child birth are being expired in the Parachinar hospitals.”

Kazmi said that to supply the medicine and other necessary products for the children, they had asked the government many times to restart the air service which has been stopped for the last six years.

The medicines and food, smuggled from Afghanistan, are too costly to be bought by a common man whose income has been disturbed for years.

According to data collected by locals, more than 70 schools and 41 medical dispensaries have been destroyed by militants only in upper Kurram.

Majlis-e Wahdat-e Muslimeen Pakistan, a religious organization, has announced a big convention and a rally in the favor of Parachinar people on July 24 in Islamabad.

According to the schedule, after the convention hundreds of people with score of trucks filled with necessary items will travel to the Parachinar where on the way they might face attacks by the militants.

Whether these trucks reach their destination or not, Hassan and hundreds of other students from Kurram do not hope for any change in their lives in near future.

Homesick looking Hassan did not know when he would meet his family but hoped about the time when he would travel to his hometown freely without any fear of militancy.

Most of the students from Kurram have some demands and conditions about their return; they want the setup of permanent army checkposts alongside the Thall-Parachinar road and the revival of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) medical college and Islamia University.
