Shahbaz Bhatti assassinated: Thank you, Deep State!
Related: LUBP Archive on Shahbaz Bhatti
Federal Minister for minority affairs, Shahbaz Bhatti has been killed in the I-8/3 area of Islamabad by two unidentified gunmen who shot at him and fled the scene on a car.
After Benazir Bhutto and Salmaan Taseer, the Deep State and its Jihadi subsidiaries have been successful in eliminating yet another leader of the PPP trying to bring some sense to the Islamic Republic of Nonsense.
We also consider the right wing and pseudo liberal proxies of the Deep State/establishment as complict in this dastardly act; the former for incitment and the latter for obfuscating the issues surrounding the murder of Shaheed Shahbaz Bhatti. Both are essentially anti-democracy pressure groups that want to settle their scores with the current weakened democratic dispensation. These two groups, really two sides of the same coin, have a strong presence in the media, NGOs, judiciary-bureaucracy, and have provided a platform to the foot soldiers of Jihadi and Sectarian organizations.
Shaheed Bhatti’s only crime was that:
1. He was a leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party and a voice of a religiously and ethnically tolerant and inclusive Pakistan .
2. He was a Christian.
3. He boldly voiced his support for Asiya Bibi and all the other victims of terrorism by the Sipah-e-Sahaba, Lashkar Jhangvi, Lashkar-e-Taiba and other Wahhabi-Deobandi proxies of the Deep state.
4. In stark comparison to the shallow self promoting slogans and tactics by a fake civil society and the pseudo-liberal supportes of the establishment, he was practically active in support of Asiya Bibi and other victims of religious intolerance.
5. He was a loyal and committed supporter of President Asif Zardari, co-chairman of the PPP.
Of course, the above five crimes were sufficient in this land of the pure to activate the purifying operatives of the Deep State .
It may be noted that the murder took place in Islamabad ’s sector I-8 which also ‘happens to be’ the ISI officers’ residential colony.
Here is how the civilian proxies of the Deep State are spinning the story:
The Jamaat-e-Islami connection: Royal News (TV) bureau chief Zaffar Hashmi is speculating live on tv about Shaheed Shahbaz Bhatti’s murder as a plot to distract attention from Raymond Davis. It is however a known fact that Royal News itself is funded by Jamaat-e-Islami and thus ISI.
Blaming the Victim: Pakistan ’s chattering elite (Fake Civil Society) and their Right wing counterparts have already started maligning PPP after the murder of yet another PPP leader. Shame has no limits!
While right wing (Jamaat-e-Islami) proxies are terming the murder as a ploy to distract attention from the Raymond Davis case, the pseudo-“liberal” writers are not any better. This is what Cyril Almeida wrote (via Twitter):
PPP thought surrendering to extremist demands would help. It doesn’t.
Really, Mr. Almeida? You think khakis and their proxies kill those who surrender!!
The Deep State continues to protects Jihadi-sectarian organizations like LeT, SSP, JeM, HuJI and LeJ. While the UN has declared Hafiz Saeed as a terrorist, Pakistan’s Jihadi Judiciary has freed him to hold rallies & give interviews and share the stage with prominent right-wing media don, Majeed Nizami and the senior leadership of PML N and PTI; Imran Khan’s ISI-backed political party.
In spite of dossiers of evidence, especially in the wake of the Mumbai attacks, the Supreme court freed Hafiz Saeed on the basis of “insufficient evidence”; an understanding that does not apply to the lynching of the PPP leadership. This is the same judiciary and its establishment backers like Aitzaz Ahsan, which is considered sacred by many of the pseudo-liberal members of Pakistan ’s Fake Civil Society.
The only segment that Pakistan ’s chattering elites love to crucify is the PPP. They do this because they lack the moral integrity and the courage to every call out the actual perpetrators, backers and supporters of Pakistan ’s Jihadi factories. Furthermore the financial interests of this group are tied in with the Deep State . The PPP-lead government hurts the financial corruption of their NGO businesses, where some NGOs profit financially from highlighting the miseries of the downtrodden without really doing anything of substance for them.
Any decent activists within these civil society groups are quickly co-opted by pro-establishment opportunists, who use the murder of PPP victims of Islamofascism to malign other anti-establishment PPP leaders.
Why is it only the PPP and ANP who are ‘chosen’ to be killed by the right wing proxies of the state and then their own parties are maligned by the liberal proxies of Pakistan’s fake civil society!
The right wing Jamaat-e-Islam spin is that this murder is a CIA/PPP plot to distract from Raymond Davis; the fake civil society line is that he was murdered because PPP surrendered to the mullahs. Both the right wing and pseudo left-liberals are carefully obscuring the role of the Deep State ;
Both dishonest narratives are fatal for Pakistan and its people
As a friend noted (via Twitter): A killer had been put in Salmaan Taseer’s securty detail and Shahbaz Bhatti had no guards. Both these strategies have been conspired by the same mindset.
In his endeavors for the poor and downtrodden, Shaheed Shahbaz Bhatti made 11 August as national minorities day, increased salaries of minority workers, boldy condemned violence against them. Anything that he and his government could achieve, they did.
Shaheed Shahbaz Bhatti knew the threat well, so did Shaheed Taseer and so did Shaheed Mohtarma. Which other party has such brave people except ANP?
All media persons (from right wing and fake liberal wing) seem to be in step with the GHQ and are responsible for the murder of yet another PPP leader. All PPP-phobes will celebrate today as yet another day of victory. This is a loss for Pakistan and its people.
PPP supporters, be careful. Don’t let the right wing and the fake liberal left proxies of the GHQ hijack yet another martyred leader of PPP to promote ‘their’ own agenda.
Today, all those who are still carefully ignoring the role of the establishment in creating and fostering the Jihadi cancer that is consuming Pakistan itself, have declared their agenda. In attacking and blaming the victim while studiously ignoring the actual perpetrators, these apologists have shown their hand yet again!
……..
A sample of what the “Good” Taliban of Generals Kayani and Pasha leave in their trail on the murder site.
Shahbaz Bhatti: A brave man’s interview: I prefer to die for my principles and justice rather than compromising
It is the brutal act by extremists. The extremists made the Pakistan a “hell”. There is no freedom of thought and expression in land. There is no religious liberties. Where is the spirit of tolerance which is the claim of religious scholars and leaders. All in books but world look on the acts of the followers.
Marnay kay liye sirf PPP kay loag bachay hayn! Give the government to Nawaz Sharif and let him handle the affairs
Govt: keep sleeping and give free hand to thses religious janonees.
ohh Pakistan again lost another patriot and best and honest person.
Shahbaz Bhatti, a Catholic, is the new minister for the defense of minorities
The Pakistani member of parliament has focused his political efforts on defending minority rights. He embraced the Catholic religion as a child, and counts on Christ in order to fulfill his new duties.
Islamabad (AsiaNews/ANS) – Shahbaz Bhatti, a Catholic member of parliament and head of the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA) is the new Pakistani minister for the defense of minorities. The appointment came on the night of November 2, and for the first time the position has the same stature as the other cabinet posts. In the past, protection of minorities was entrusted to a lower ranking official, who had to work under one of the government ministers.
Bhatti, together with other members of the new executive, took the oath of office before President Asif Ali Zardari, during a special ceremony held on November 3 in Islamabad. Volunteers, workers, and sympathizers of the APMA celebrated by distributing sweets and dancing to the rhythm of drums. The association has always fought to promote unity, interreligious dialogue, social justice, human rights, and religious freedom for all minorities in the country: from Christians to Hindus, from Sikhs to Parsis, without any distinction.
After taking the oath of office, the minister-elect said that he accepted the post for the sake of the “oppressed, down-trodden and marginalized” of Pakistan, and that he has dedicated his life to “struggle for human equality, social justice, religious freedom, and to uplift and empower the religious minorities’ communities.” He added that he wants to send “a message of hope to the people living a life of disappointment, disillusionment and despair.” “Jesus is the nucleus of my life,” says Bhatti, “and I want to be His true follower through my actions by sharing the love of God with poor, oppressed, victimized, needy and suffering people of Pakistan.”
Shahbaz Bhatti founded the Christian-inspired APMA movement in 1985. One of his first battles was against the law on blasphemy, introduced in 1986 and used to repress religious minorities in the country, with particular focus on the Christian community, the one hardest hit by the new norm.
“I will propose legislative reforms for the promotion and protection of minorities’ rights,” the Catholic member of parliament adds. “I will speed up efforts to promote unity and understanding to tackle the issues of intolerance, hatred, prejudice and violence.” Finally, he thanked president Zardari and prime minister Raza Gilani because they recognize the value of minorities for domestic equilibrium, giving “a sense of equality” in the rights of all components of Pakistani society.
Bhatti embraced the Christian faith as a child, touched by the story of Christ’s sacrifice for his people. As a young man, he organized meetings aimed at the study of the Word of God, before dedicating his life to the defense of minorities. He has received numerous recognitions over the course of the years, including the prize for religious liberty received in Finland in 2003, the peace prize given to him by an American organization in 1998, and a prize for his struggle in favor of human rights given to him in Canada the following year. In his work in parliament, he has never forgotten to make the voice of the marginalized and oppressed heard, whose rights he has promoted in every one of his political struggles.

This guy was “Mufti e Azam Pakistan” and brother of famous Justice Taqi RT @nahaltoosi: Pakistan’s Mufti Rafi Usmani says Bhatti murder “could be an American conspiracy to defame the government of Pakistan, Muslims and Islam.”
After a very short interval (4th Jan to 1st March)another PPP devotee has given an opportunity to candle party or FCS to mourn and super power media to talk about Shaheed Shahbaz Bhatti’s security.
The political wing of PPP should review its tolerance policy and should retaliate politically on killings of PPP leadership. For this PPP have face Pakistan Supreme League PSL (CH) means Pakistan Independent Supreme court (Choudhri wing), PML (N), ISI funded Media and all militant wings in religious parties.
It is not an easy task but let us think over it.

Two PPP leaders killed in the span of a week!
Mir Nawaz Advocate, a PPP stalwart in Gilgit – Baltistan was killed in Gilgit by motorcyclists. And now a federal minister has been killed inside the capital city. Of course, I am not counting the “others” who are being killed, everyday. They are children of a ‘lesser god’, anyway!!

Sad, I ask all my countrymen, now in light of this incident what do they think the world will think of us & our religion?
These Animals (Talibans) have destroyed the image of Islam & the reputation of Pakistan.
Now I ask Mr. Imran Khan & people from Jamaat-E-Islami & ofcourse the insane Qazi Hussain Ahmed to defend this act. Please gentlemen come & justify these animals (snakes) called Talibans.
These people kill innocent men, women, children in the name of Allah & our prophet’s (PBUH) teachings.
Let Haimd Mir, Ansar Abbasi & other like them glorify these animals & defend today’s incident.
This is no more a country for us. Give Nawaz Sharif what he wants. That is only way PPP walas will at least live, if not remain safe.
Pakistan is not a country for sane men.

unknown assailants shot the minister when he was leaving from his house in Sector I-8.
In broad daylight, unknown assailants sprayed bullets on the car of the minister after he came out of his mother’s home in a residential area of Islamabad, police said.
“Three or four armed men riding in a white car intercepted his official vehicle GV-444,” city police chief Wajid Durrani told reporters.
“The attackers were clad in shawls and fired bursts on him, and he died,” Durrani said. The minister’s driver was wounded.
The police chief insisted that Bhatti had been provided with proper security, but said the minister was not accompanied by his security detail when the attack happened.
“The squad officer told me that the minister had directed him to wait for him at his office. We are investigating the matter from different angles,” Durrani said.
Bhatti was dead on arrival at Islamabad’s Shifa hospital, doctor Azmatullah Qureshi confirmed.

They said the same thing after Shaheed Taseer assassination.
Not surprised by the reaction of FCS. They, however, have to answer why only PPP people are killed and not the firebrands of the media and/or the FCS… not that one wants them to be killed but why does this happen that the deep state and its proxies take on the PPP leadership and mention them in their pamphlets? This quesion has to be put to the Declan Walsh’s, alqaidas (oops sorry almeidas) of the press and Dayan Hasans of the human rights community. Rather than make a united front against the deep state they dilute the issue. Is this deliberate or an outcome of stupidity? Perhaps both. But we need to remain rational and pose this question to them.
Agreed with Chandio Sb’s comments. May God bless Shaheed Shahbaz Bhatti paradise and God bless courage to his party leadership to carry on Shaheed’s mission and God bless his family members courage and patient.

Pakistani Taliban militants claimed responsibility for killing Bhatti, with a Taliban spokesman saying the minister was a blasphemer.
Bhatti was shot in broad daylight while travelling in a car near a market in the capital, Islamabad, police said.
“The initial reports are that there were three men who attacked him. He was probably shot using a Kalashnikov, but we are trying to ascertain what exactly happened,” said Islamabad police chief Wajid Durrani.
The windscreen of Bhatti’s car had four or five bullet holes and blood covered the back seat. A hospital spokesman said Bhatti, who had spoken out against the anti-blasphemy law, received several wounds.
The law has been in the spotlight since last November, when a court sentenced a Christian mother of four to death.
On Jan 4 the governor of the most populous province of Punjab, Salman Taseer, who had strongly opposed the law and sought a presidential pardon for the 45-year-old Christian farmhand, was killed by one of his bodyguards who had been angered by the governor’s stand.
Bhatti was travelling without security, having left two escorts provided by police at home, Durrani said.
“There was no protection when he left the house,” the police chief said. “There was just a private driver with him. We don’t know about the minister’s thinking, but we had provided him two escorts because he was under threat.”
Pakistani Taliban militants had called for Bhatti’s death because of his attempts to amend the law and a militant spokesman, Sajjad Mohmand, said they had killed him.
“He was a blasphemer like Salman Taseer,” Mohmand said by telephone from an undisclosed location.
“PROTECTION FROM HEAVEN”
Last month, in an interview with the Christian Post, Bhatti said he had received threats.
“I received a call from the Taliban commander and he said, ‘If you will bring any changes in the blasphemy law and speak on this issue, then you will be killed’,” Bhatti told the newspaper.
“I don’t believe that bodyguards can save me after the assassination (of Salman Taseer). I believe in the protection from heaven.”
The January killing of Taseer was widely praised by hardline Islamist groups such as the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), the country’s largest religious party.
But the party denounced Bhatti’s murder.
“We condemn this killing. This is a conspiracy and it may be an attempt to divert attention from the case of Raymond Davis,” senior JI leader Farid Paracha told Reuters.
Davis is an American CIA contractor on trial for killing two Pakistanis. The case has been taken up by religious parties which have called for Davis to be hanged.
Bhatti’s killing is likely to further deter any attempt to change the blasphemy law that mandates death for anyone who speaks ill of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad.
Sherry Rehman, a former government minister and member of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, which included Bhatti, tried to change the law last year but the party leadership forced her to stop in the face of opposition from religious conservatives.
The law has its roots in 19th Century colonial legislation to protect places of worship, but it was during the military dictatorship of General Mohammad Zia ul-Haq in the 1980s that it acquired teeth as part of a drive to Islamise the state.
Liberal Pakistanis and rights groups believe the law to be dangerously discriminatory against tiny minority groups.
Under the law, anyone who speaks ill of Islam and the Prophet Mohammad commits a crime and faces the death penalty, but activists say the vague terminology has led to its misuse.
Christians who make up about two percent of the population have been especially concerned, saying the law offers them no protection. Convictions hinge on witness testimony and often these are linked to personal vendettas, critics say.
Convictions are common although the death sentence has never been carried out. Most convictions are thrown out on appeal, but angry mobs have killed many people accused of blasphemy.

Zardari’s PPP is the supposed torch-carrier of enlightenment and reform here: a force for change amid a gaggle of parties in thrall to religious zealotry, and a foe of the army’s tendency to play Islamic cards itself when its hegemony is threatened. There’s no possible doubt which side it ought to be on. There isn’t even much doubt which side it took as the case of Aasia Bibi developed. But now frailty leads its leaders by the nose.
Why? Of course you can blame them for personal fear: Bhatti’s death underlines the grim message of Taseer. Speak out and you may not live long. Taliban extremism claims more victims every day. But the real problem is that, across Pakistan, ordinary people taught by ordinary mullahs to reach extraordinary conclusions, have come to side with the blasphemy laws as well. They don’t want repeal. They want matters to rest as they are. Crude democracy, in a way, wants Aasia Bibi punished – and so for Pakistan’s 4% of Christians to live in constant fear. There are thousands of relatively liberal, more educated voices in play; but there are many more millions who see nothing wrong as lawyers queue to plead their sad case. A sentence out of place means death: killing those who find this law grotesque seems to mean instant heroism.
Who’ll draw a line and turn the tide? No president, present or future, you can see. Not a feeble, flailing Zardari. Not his old adversary, Nawaz Sharif and his Muslim League. Not some general waiting in the wings. The difficulty is that there is no one, and no concerted body of opinion, who can join, let alone hope to win, this debate for what may come to symbolise the destiny of Pakistan. For tolerance, for restraint, for the ability to live side by side in a truly free world? If Cairo adds a spoonful of hope, Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad bring only the recipes of despair.

The Vatican condemned the murder of the Catholic politician as an “unspeakable” act of violence.
Shahbaz Bhatti’s car was riddled with bullets
Mr Bhatti, 42, a leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), had just left home in a suburb of the capital when three to four gunmen surrounded his vehicle and sprayed it with bullets.
One witness, Gulam Rahim, told AP news agency that two of the attackers had opened the door and tried to pull Mr Bhatti out, while another man fired a Kalashnikov into the car.
He was taken to the nearby Shifa hospital, but was dead on arrival.
The gunmen, who were wearing shawls, escaped in a white Suzuki car, according to witnesses.
Police chief Wajid Durrani told reporters that the minister was not accompanied by his guards when the attack happened, although he said Mr Bhatti had been provided with a security detail.

Militants have made it clear that they intend to break a ceasefire agreement not to attack Pakistani cities, and security officials fear major terror activity this year, especially as militants have regrouped in many parts of the tribal areas as well as in the cities of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province, from where they were routed last year. Mardan, which is close to Islamabad, has experienced at least three high-profile attacks in the past few weeks, including one on a Punjab regimental center and Tuesday’s attack on a girls’ college.
Bhatti’s murder was carefully planned; the militants had obviously cased the area, knew his schedule, had pamphlets published in advance claiming responsibility, and managed to enter and exit what is supposed to be a secure zone unscathed. This points to the militants’ increasing capacity to hit any target of their choice despite the government’s best security efforts.
The incident also brings into question the ideological underpinning of the militancy in Pakistan. Despite successful military operations in Swat, South Waziristan and other tribal areas, it has not been possible to uproot the militants. Until a coherent ideological discourse is opened that could defeat the arguments of the militants in their own jargon, the concept of complete security in Pakistani society remains a dream.

Before they sped off, the assassins dumped pamphlets at the scene of the crime. “This is a warning from the warriors of Islam to all the world’s infidels, Crusaders, Jews and their operatives within the Muslim brotherhood,” it reads, “especially the head of Pakistan’s infidel system, [President Asif Ali] Zardari, his ministers, and all the institutions of this evil system.” This document from the Punjabi Taliban continues: “In your fight against Allah, you have become so bold that you act in favor of and support those who insult the Prophet. And you put a cursed Christian infidel Shahbaz Bhatti in charge of [the blasphemy laws review] committee. This is the fate of that cursed man. And now, with the grace of Allah, the warriors of Islam will pick you out one by one and send you to hell, God willing.”
Bhatti founded the All-Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA), an advocacy group, in 1985, and joined government in November 2008. According to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), Bhatti used his office “to obtain government assistance for victims of the worst instances of religiously-motivated mob violence, to advocate publicly for reform or repeal of the blasphemy laws, to gain increased public attention to the concerns of the religious minorities, to secure increased employment opportunities in public service for members of religious minority communities, and to promote religious tolerance.”
In 2009, the government introduced affirmative action for minorities—5 percent of all federal employment—and designated Aug. 11 a holiday to celebrate minorities, who comprise 3.7 percent of the country’s population of 180 million. But the government also distanced itself from Taseer over the blasphemy laws controversy. It is for this reason that Bhatti, who never gave up on his position that the laws be reviewed, was a surprise inclusion in the smaller federal cabinet that was announced in early February.
“I want to give witness through my actions and through even my life that I am a follower of Christ,” Bhatti told The Christian Post in Washington, D.C., the same month. “That is why these death threats don’t give me fear, but it gives me more commitment.” His 88-year-old father had a heart attack when he heard of Taseer’s killing on Jan. 4. He died a week later. “He knew that I was very close to Taseer and [that] I am also the target of extremists, so he could not bear that,” said Bhatti. “My father used to encourage me a lot. He said that, ‘I devoted you for this cause, for the Christian rights. And you should stand to give witness.’ ”

PROPHET MUHAMMAD’S
CHARTER OF PRIVILEGES TO CHRISTIANS
LETTER TO THE MONKS OF ST. CATHERINE MONASTERY
Dr. A. Zahoor and Dr. Z. Haq
(Copyright 1990, 1997, All Rights Reserved)
In 628 C.E. Prophet Muhammad (s) granted a Charter of Privileges to the monks of St. Catherine Monastery in Mt. Sinai. It consisted of several clauses covering all aspects of human rights including such topics as the protection of Christians, freedom of worship and movement, freedom to appoint their own judges and to own and maintain their property, exemption from military service, and the right to protection in war.
An English translation of that document is presented below.
This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.
Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah! I hold out against anything that displeases them.
No compulsion is to be on them.
Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries.
No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims’ houses.
Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil God’s covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate.
No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight.
The Muslims are to fight for them.
If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray.
Their churches are to be respected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants.
No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world).

Govt beefs up security of Sherry, Fauzia
ISLAMABAD: Federal Government Wednesday beefed up the security of several other prominent political liberalists including Sherry Rehman and Fauzia Wahab following the brutal killing of Federal Minister for Minority Affairs, Shahbaz Bhatti.
According to media reports, after the assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti, security of former Federal Information Minister, Sherry Rehman and PPP’s former Secretary Information, Fauzia Wahab was a significant question. Federal government, viewing the circumstances and intermittent threats being received from the extremists, tightened the security of both PPP workers.
It is pertinent to note some of the close aides to Shahbaz Bhatti had reported he was continuously receiving threats from fanatic elements and he made a request to government to provide him a bulletproof vehicle. While the assassination was carried out, security guards were not accompanying Shahbaz Bhatti because he refused to take them with him.
Following his statements pertaining to amendments in blasphemy law, fanatic groups had sternly reacted warning government to take notice of such statements, otherwise be ready to face the music.

SHAHBAZ Bhatti was among the 22 lucky ones who had retained their ministries in the `right-sizing` of the federal cabinet last month, but remained unlucky to take advantage of his position to work for the betterment of vulnerable minorities living in the country — the job he had previously been doing for more than two decades from non-political forums.
Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs Bhatti, who became the latest victim of an ongoing terror wave, had been working on many ideas to promote interfaith harmony in the country and was very optimistic that one day he would succeed in convincing even the hard-line religious groups with the help of religio-political parties having representation in parliament.
“Every religion gives message of love and peace and there is no room for violence and bloodshed in any religion,” he recently told this reporter.
“I will prefer to die for the cause to defend the rights of my community rather than to compromise on my principles,” he had told BBC World in an interview a few months ago, adding: “The forces of violence, militants, banned organisations, Taliban and al Qaeda, want to impose their radical philosophy in Pakistan and whosoever stands against it they threaten him.”
It was perhaps after realising the sensitive nature of the issue that Mr Bhatti, 42, had started talking about finding a mechanism to stop the misuse of the country`s controversial blasphemy law, instead of calling for its repeal.
It was because of his commitment to minorities` rights and his connections with international peace and human rights organisations that slain PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto always held Mr Bhatti in high regard, according to Naheed Khan, the former political secretary to Ms Bhutto.
When, as chairman of the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance (APMA), Mr Bhatti announced his support to the PPP just before the 2002 elections, Ms Bhutto authorised him to award three party tickets to people of his choice.
And instead of himself, he nominated three other APMA members, who later became MNAs on the PPP ticket on the reserved seats for the minorities.
When one of his nominees — Mushtaq Victor — defected to join former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf`s government as state minister, Bhatti personally went to Ms Bhutto to apologise for nominating “a wrong person”.
It was in this backdrop that during the 2008 elections, he accepted Ms Bhutto`s offer to become a party representative in parliament.
Bhatti was the first minority member to become a fully-fledged federal minister for minorities affairs as all his predecessors had been offered only a state minister`s position.
After taking oath in 2008, he said he had accepted the post for the sake of “oppressed, downtrodden and marginalised” people and to empower the religious minorities.
“I want to send a message of hope to the people living a life of disappointment, disillusionment and despair. Jesus is the nucleus of my life and I want to be his true follower through my actions by sharing the love of God with the poor, oppressed, victimised, needy and suffering people of Pakistan,” he said then.
In his recent interviews and private conversations, Bhatti had called for removing hate material from the curriculum and even formally proposed to the ministry of education to take steps for this. He had also planned to introduce a legislation seeking a ban on making hate speeches and distributing hate literature. Although, minorities had no representation on the 27-member parliamentary committee for constitution reforms that drafted the landmark Eighteenth Amendment, Bhatti succeeded in getting four Senate seats reserved for minorities. It was because of his initiative, that the Pakistani government declared August 11 as the “Minorities Day”.
He had also established a 24-hour hotline for reporting acts of violence against minorities and was in the forefront in the campaign to protect religious artefacts and sites belonging to minorities.
Bhatti was a strong admirer of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and was one of the founding members of the APMA, which was formed in 1985 with the objective of defending and protecting the rights of minorities living in Pakistan in the light of the Quaid-i-Azam`s famous speech of August 11, 1948.
He has received numerous recognitions for his work, including a 2003 Finnish prize for religious liberty, a peace prize by an American organization in 1998, and a Canadian prize for his struggle for human rights the following year.
Bhatti was born on Sept 9, 1968, in Lahore, but his native town was Chak Khushpur, Faisalabad. After early education in Faisalabad, he did his Master of Business Administration from the Punjab University, Lahore.
He remained a bachelor and left behind a mother, four brothers, and a sister. His father died in January in Faisalabad.

Federal Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti was assassinated on Wednesday during an attack on his vehicle in Islamabad.
Shahbaz Bhatti, son of Jacob Bhatti was born on September 9,1968 in Lahore, Punjab.
Bhatti was the first Christian parliamentarian who was offered and took oath as Federal Minister of Minorities Affairs in Pakistan. His predecessors had been offered only a state minister position
Bhatti was one of the founding members of the organisation ‘All Pakistan Minorities Alliance’ (APMA) in 1985 and was considered a representative of the religious minorities in Pakistan.
Bhatti joined Pakistani People’s Party (PPP) in 2002. As a political leader, he had continuously asked minority groups to fight for their rights through the system instead of using violence. He was considered great admirer of Pakistan’s founder Jinnah and a true patriot.
As federal minister, Bhatti took serious steps to ensure the safety, rights and empower religious minorities while in office:
• In 2002, he banned the sale of properties belonging to minorities while law enforcement authorities took action against them
• Supported the revisions of the Blasphemy Law by the end of 2010
• Supported repeal for discriminatory laws that affected minority groups
• Launched national campaign to promote interfaith and harmony through seminars, awareness groups, and workshop.

Shahbaz Bhatti falls to assassins’ bullets; Tehreek-i-Taliban Punjab claims responsibility for murder; police claim the minister had restricted his security squad. DESIGN: SAMAD SIDDIQUI
ISLAMABAD: The brazen assassination of Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti on Wednesday might have shocked the nation, but in one of his last interactions with the media, he seemed ready, and reconciled with his fate.
“I know I am target number one for them (extremists) now after they succeeded in eliminating Salmaan Taseer (Punjab’s slain governor),” said Shahbaz Bhatti talking to The Express Tribune and a correspondent from a German newspaper on Monday, two days before his assassination in the capital.
“And frankly, let me tell you, I think they will get me one day.”
“But,” added the minister defiantly, “I won’t change my thinking towards a certain issue on the dictates of someone. I’ll continue to pursue my ideals for Pakistan; my dreams for the country.”
‘One day’ turned out to be two days later on an overcast Wednesday morning.
Bhatti was shot dead in broad daylight in the federal capital.
The only Christian minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, 42-year-old Bhatti had been receiving frequent death threats from religious fanatics.
This is the second high-profile killing inside two months, following the murder of Salmaan Taseer, the former governor Punjab, who was gunned down by one of his security guards.
Both leaders had been vocally opposing the blasphemy law, and had been actively supporting the release of Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman accused of blasphemy.
“Four men in a white Suzuki Mehran intercepted the minister’s car near his mother’s house. Two of them disembarked from their vehicle, spared the driver, while one of them sprayed bullets at the minister from the left side of the car,” Islamabad’s police chief Wajid Ali Durrani told reporters after the incident.
Gul Sher, the minister’s driver, told the police he had ducked when the assailant opened fire. According to him, the assailants fired three or four shots before firing a continuous burst.
Bhatti was taken to the nearby Shifa International hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Police said they had collected 25 empty shell casings from the crime scene.
The post-mortem report showed as many as 30 bullet wounds on the minister’s body, including some in his skull, which ruptured it, causing his immediate death.
The report said that his upper torso was “riddled with bullets. His skull, heart, lungs, and other vital organs were all ruptured. However, there were no wounds on his limbs,” said a source in the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) where the post-mortem examination was conducted.
Brazenly, the killers did not even bother to eliminate vital evidence, including the driver, who suffered minor bruises.
Police said they had found a pamphlet left behind by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Punjab, an al Qaeda affiliate, claiming the responsibility for the attack and attributing it to Bhatti’s calls for amending the blasphemy law.
Security escort
Police chief Durrani said that the minister had been provided a security escort. However, the escort was nowhere to be seen in the aftermath of the killing.
Initially, the police said that the minister had left the security escort at his home. “This was his routine,” said Durrani.
Later, the police issued a press statement, claiming that the minister had relieved the security personnel at 11 pm on Tuesday adding that he had asked them to come to his office on Wednesday. The statement also claimed that 15 security personnel, including police commandos and Frontier Constabulary personnel, had been deployed for providing security to Bhatti – but they had been confined to his office.
According to the statement, the minister had personally restricted the security contingent.
It said that the Islamabad IG “has requested all VIPs to keep their guards with them at all times to avoid any untoward incident”. The IG said that sketches of the culprits involved in the murder had been rendered with the help of Bhatti’s driver.
It was not immediately clear if the security officials were bound to follow the minister’s instructions even if he had ordered them not to follow him. “In the case of VVIPs, security escorts were bound to follow the standard operating procedures and not the VVIP’s instructions,” said a police official. However, he did not know if that held true for VIPs, including ministers.
After Taseer’s death, Bhatti had often expressed mistrust in personal security, instead reposing his trust in “heavenly security”.
The IG said an investigation team had been formed to probe into the incident under Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Tahir Alam Khan and Deputy Superintendent of Police (CIA).
Message from the dead
Bhatti, it seemed, already knew of his assassins. In a prerecorded message he had given to the BBC and Al Jazeera, which he had asked to be released in case of his death, Bhatti said that he was being threatened by the Taliban and al Qaeda.
The threats would not deter him from speaking out for persecuted Christians and other minorities, he said in the one-minute message released following his assasination. “I will die to defend their rights.”

How many more have to die by the hands of the deep state and its proxies that target PPP leadership? Sadly, it looks as though the Pakistani Taliban militants are the ones who decide who lives and dies over their charges of blasphemy.
It is not acceptable for a teeming city of such enterprise as Islamabad, that its citizens will now know that their leaders cannot drive through its streets after they speak out a little too clearly about freedom of thought and principles of human rights; a great country with the democratic potential of Pakistan should not stand for cruel religious fanatics who impose their own twisted will in the name of Allah and Prophet (PBUH)-
We must not forget Salman Taseer and we must not forget Shaheed Shahbaz Bhatti- and the memory of what they stood for should galvanize those of us who walk the streets in silence out of fear of fatal reprisal, and think we are powerless- those that have high-jacked Islam are the true cowards that will stone women, slaughter innocents as they throw away their own useless lives, anoint themselves as judge and jury dispensing foul justice as gatekeepers of righteousness who in fact are Satan’s helpers.
Those of us who see unenlightened Mullahs preaching hate, living with modern advances, yet idealizing feudal ignorance; those of us who care for our families, that build instead of tear-down, that stand for plurality and liberties should show a stronger presence against such criminal brute force.
Mullahs of the Ummah that preach love and values must speak out- insist on decisive action against radicals and protection for our leaders. Where are the enlightened Ulema- the educated muftis, qadis, faqih, or muhaddith among us who could articulate truth against the radical interpretation of their own Quranic verses. Until these religious scholars step forward, the products of wayward Madrassas will belch out more converted assassins, and the Imam’s that could make a difference, will instead, through their silence be included in the evils of the deep state.
Pakistani breakup (implosion) not too far (may be)!!!
I dont think this man is an ISI stooge because looking at his arguments, he lacks the basic level of intellect. However, he seems to be a shoe-licker of stooges.
The good thing about proxies is if you find one, you can track the whole network!

PPP Punjab presents tribute to late Bhatti
LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab chapter held a meeting to condole the assassination of Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs, Shahbaz Bhatti, at the party headquarters in Faisal Town on Thursday. Under the chairmanship of provincial secretary Samiullah Khan Durrani, the party paid rich tribute to the minister for his efforts to boost the living standard of the minorities in the country. PPP’s nominated opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly and former senior minister Raja Riaz Ahmad, party’s nominated parliamentary leader in the House Nazar Gondal and other office-bearers attended the meeting. The meeting began with a special prayer for the deceased soul, followed by a series of speeches on the late minister. On the occasion, the party leaders and office-bearers also offered fateha for the founder of the PPP, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and its assassinated leaders Benazir Bhutto and Salmaan Taseer. The PPP office-bearers also shared some of their memories of Shahbaz Bhatti as a true jiyala and a wise political leader who was fighting for the rights of minorities. The party leaders said that Bhatti’s murder was a great loss for the party and the democracy. Addressing the meeting, Raja Riaz condemned the murder of the minister and said that the attack on Bhatti was not an act of killing, but a direct attack on the PPP. However, the party would continue its struggle for uplifting the living standard of the poor masses of the country, following the vision of Benazir Bhutto, he added. Riaz said that the PPP was committed to continue the politics of reconciliation in the near future in the larger interest of the nation. He said that the PPP-led government was not afraid of terrorists and would deal with such cowardly acts bravely. Riaz said that Bhatti’s murder was against the thinking of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah who had given equal rights to the minorities. Riaz warned that efforts were being made to disintegrate Pakistan, but his party would not give the anti-state elements any space to succeed in their aims at any cost. He urged the nation to follow the commitments of Quaid-e-Azam which he had made with the minorities, like giving protection of life and equal rights to them. Strongly condemning the murder of Bhatti, nominated PPP parliamentary leader in Punjab Assembly, Nazar Gondal, said that his party was proud of the assassinated minister’s services who, he added, had sacrificed his life for a patriotic reason.
