Pakistani Taliban militants claimed responsibility for killing Bhatti, with a Taliban spokesman saying the minister was a blasphemer.

Bhatti was shot in broad daylight while travelling in a car near a market in the capital, Islamabad, police said.

“The initial reports are that there were three men who attacked him. He was probably shot using a Kalashnikov, but we are trying to ascertain what exactly happened,” said Islamabad police chief Wajid Durrani.

The windscreen of Bhatti’s car had four or five bullet holes and blood covered the back seat. A hospital spokesman said Bhatti, who had spoken out against the anti-blasphemy law, received several wounds.

The law has been in the spotlight since last November, when a court sentenced a Christian mother of four to death.

On Jan 4 the governor of the most populous province of Punjab, Salman Taseer, who had strongly opposed the law and sought a presidential pardon for the 45-year-old Christian farmhand, was killed by one of his bodyguards who had been angered by the governor’s stand.

Bhatti was travelling without security, having left two escorts provided by police at home, Durrani said.

“There was no protection when he left the house,” the police chief said. “There was just a private driver with him. We don’t know about the minister’s thinking, but we had provided him two escorts because he was under threat.”

Pakistani Taliban militants had called for Bhatti’s death because of his attempts to amend the law and a militant spokesman, Sajjad Mohmand, said they had killed him.

“He was a blasphemer like Salman Taseer,” Mohmand said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

“PROTECTION FROM HEAVEN”

Last month, in an interview with the Christian Post, Bhatti said he had received threats.

“I received a call from the Taliban commander and he said, ‘If you will bring any changes in the blasphemy law and speak on this issue, then you will be killed’,” Bhatti told the newspaper.

“I don’t believe that bodyguards can save me after the assassination (of Salman Taseer). I believe in the protection from heaven.”

The January killing of Taseer was widely praised by hardline Islamist groups such as the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), the country’s largest religious party.

But the party denounced Bhatti’s murder.

“We condemn this killing. This is a conspiracy and it may be an attempt to divert attention from the case of Raymond Davis,” senior JI leader Farid Paracha told Reuters.

Davis is an American CIA contractor on trial for killing two Pakistanis. The case has been taken up by religious parties which have called for Davis to be hanged.

Bhatti’s killing is likely to further deter any attempt to change the blasphemy law that mandates death for anyone who speaks ill of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad.

Sherry Rehman, a former government minister and member of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party, which included Bhatti, tried to change the law last year but the party leadership forced her to stop in the face of opposition from religious conservatives.

The law has its roots in 19th Century colonial legislation to protect places of worship, but it was during the military dictatorship of General Mohammad Zia ul-Haq in the 1980s that it acquired teeth as part of a drive to Islamise the state.

Liberal Pakistanis and rights groups believe the law to be dangerously discriminatory against tiny minority groups.

Under the law, anyone who speaks ill of Islam and the Prophet Mohammad commits a crime and faces the death penalty, but activists say the vague terminology has led to its misuse.

Christians who make up about two percent of the population have been especially concerned, saying the law offers them no protection. Convictions hinge on witness testimony and often these are linked to personal vendettas, critics say.

Convictions are common although the death sentence has never been carried out. Most convictions are thrown out on appeal, but angry mobs have killed many people accused of blasphemy.

Mr Bhatti, 42, a leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), had just left home in a suburb of the capital when three to four gunmen surrounded his vehicle and sprayed it with bullets.

One witness, Gulam Rahim, told AP news agency that two of the attackers had opened the door and tried to pull Mr Bhatti out, while another man fired a Kalashnikov into the car.

He was taken to the nearby Shifa hospital, but was dead on arrival.

The gunmen, who were wearing shawls, escaped in a white Suzuki car, according to witnesses.

Police chief Wajid Durrani told reporters that the minister was not accompanied by his guards when the attack happened, although he said Mr Bhatti had been provided with a security detail.

Pamphlets by al-Qaeda and Tehrik-i-Taliban Punjab, a branch of the Taliban in Pakistan’s most populous province, were found at the ambush site.

Tehrik-i-Taliban told BBC Urdu they carried out the attack.

This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.
Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah! I hold out against anything that displeases them.
No compulsion is to be on them.
Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries.
No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims’ houses.

No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight.
The Muslims are to fight for them.

Blasphemy law victim: One more silenced

ISLAMABAD: The brazen assassination of Minister for Minority Affairs Shahbaz Bhatti on Wednesday might have shocked the nation, but in one of his last interactions with the media, he seemed ready, and reconciled with his fate.
“I know I am target number one for them (extremists) now after they succeeded in eliminating Salmaan Taseer (Punjab’s slain governor),” said Shahbaz Bhatti talking to The Express Tribune and a correspondent from a German newspaper on Monday, two days before his assassination in the capital.
“And frankly, let me tell you, I think they will get me one day.”
“But,” added the minister defiantly, “I won’t change my thinking towards a certain issue on the dictates of someone. I’ll continue to pursue my ideals for Pakistan; my dreams for the country.”
‘One day’ turned out to be two days later on an overcast Wednesday morning.
Bhatti was shot dead in broad daylight in the federal capital.
The only Christian minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, 42-year-old Bhatti had been receiving frequent death threats from religious fanatics.
This is the second high-profile killing inside two months, following the murder of Salmaan Taseer, the former governor Punjab, who was gunned down by one of his security guards.
Both leaders had been vocally opposing the blasphemy law, and had been actively supporting the release of Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman accused of blasphemy.
“Four men in a white Suzuki Mehran intercepted the minister’s car near his mother’s house. Two of them disembarked from their vehicle, spared the driver, while one of them sprayed bullets at the minister from the left side of the car,” Islamabad’s police chief Wajid Ali Durrani told reporters after the incident.
Gul Sher, the minister’s driver, told the police he had ducked when the assailant opened fire. According to him, the assailants fired three or four shots before firing a continuous burst.
Bhatti was taken to the nearby Shifa International hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Police said they had collected 25 empty shell casings from the crime scene.
The post-mortem report showed as many as 30 bullet wounds on the minister’s body, including some in his skull, which ruptured it, causing his immediate death.
The report said that his upper torso was “riddled with bullets. His skull, heart, lungs, and other vital organs were all ruptured. However, there were no wounds on his limbs,” said a source in the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) where the post-mortem examination was conducted.
Brazenly, the killers did not even bother to eliminate vital evidence, including the driver, who suffered minor bruises.
Police said they had found a pamphlet left behind by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Punjab, an al Qaeda affiliate, claiming the responsibility for the attack and attributing it to Bhatti’s calls for amending the blasphemy law.
Security escort
Police chief Durrani said that the minister had been provided a security escort. However, the escort was nowhere to be seen in the aftermath of the killing.
Initially, the police said that the minister had left the security escort at his home. “This was his routine,” said Durrani.
Later, the police issued a press statement, claiming that the minister had relieved the security personnel at 11 pm on Tuesday adding that he had asked them to come to his office on Wednesday. The statement also claimed that 15 security personnel, including police commandos and Frontier Constabulary personnel, had been deployed for providing security to Bhatti – but they had been confined to his office.
According to the statement, the minister had personally restricted the security contingent.
It said that the Islamabad IG “has requested all VIPs to keep their guards with them at all times to avoid any untoward incident”. The IG said that sketches of the culprits involved in the murder had been rendered with the help of Bhatti’s driver.
It was not immediately clear if the security officials were bound to follow the minister’s instructions even if he had ordered them not to follow him. “In the case of VVIPs, security escorts were bound to follow the standard operating procedures and not the VVIP’s instructions,” said a police official. However, he did not know if that held true for VIPs, including ministers.
After Taseer’s death, Bhatti had often expressed mistrust in personal security, instead reposing his trust in “heavenly security”.
The IG said an investigation team had been formed to probe into the incident under Senior Superintendent of Police (Operations) Tahir Alam Khan and Deputy Superintendent of Police (CIA).
Message from the dead
Bhatti, it seemed, already knew of his assassins. In a prerecorded message he had given to the BBC and Al Jazeera, which he had asked to be released in case of his death, Bhatti said that he was being threatened by the Taliban and al Qaeda.
The threats would not deter him from speaking out for persecuted Christians and other minorities, he said in the one-minute message released following his assasination. “I will die to defend their rights.”

We must not forget Salman Taseer and we must not forget Shaheed Shahbaz Bhatti- and the memory of what they stood for should galvanize those of us who walk the streets in silence out of fear of fatal reprisal, and think we are powerless- those that have high-jacked Islam are the true cowards that will stone women, slaughter innocents as they throw away their own useless lives, anoint themselves as judge and jury dispensing foul justice as gatekeepers of righteousness who in fact are Satan’s helpers.

Those of us who see unenlightened Mullahs preaching hate, living with modern advances, yet idealizing feudal ignorance; those of us who care for our families, that build instead of tear-down, that stand for plurality and liberties should show a stronger presence against such criminal brute force.

Mullahs of the Ummah that preach love and values must speak out- insist on decisive action against radicals and protection for our leaders. Where are the enlightened Ulema- the educated muftis, qadis, faqih, or muhaddith among us who could articulate truth against the radical interpretation of their own Quranic verses. Until these religious scholars step forward, the products of wayward Madrassas will belch out more converted assassins, and the Imam’s that could make a difference, will instead, through their silence be included in the evils of the deep state.

I dont think this man is an ISI stooge because looking at his arguments, he lacks the basic level of intellect. However, he seems to be a shoe-licker of stooges.

PPP Punjab presents tribute to late Bhatti

LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab chapter held a meeting to condole the assassination of Federal Minister for Minorities Affairs, Shahbaz Bhatti, at the party headquarters in Faisal Town on Thursday. Under the chairmanship of provincial secretary Samiullah Khan Durrani, the party paid rich tribute to the minister for his efforts to boost the living standard of the minorities in the country. PPP’s nominated opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly and former senior minister Raja Riaz Ahmad, party’s nominated parliamentary leader in the House Nazar Gondal and other office-bearers attended the meeting. The meeting began with a special prayer for the deceased soul, followed by a series of speeches on the late minister. On the occasion, the party leaders and office-bearers also offered fateha for the founder of the PPP, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, and its assassinated leaders Benazir Bhutto and Salmaan Taseer. The PPP office-bearers also shared some of their memories of Shahbaz Bhatti as a true jiyala and a wise political leader who was fighting for the rights of minorities. The party leaders said that Bhatti’s murder was a great loss for the party and the democracy. Addressing the meeting, Raja Riaz condemned the murder of the minister and said that the attack on Bhatti was not an act of killing, but a direct attack on the PPP. However, the party would continue its struggle for uplifting the living standard of the poor masses of the country, following the vision of Benazir Bhutto, he added. Riaz said that the PPP was committed to continue the politics of reconciliation in the near future in the larger interest of the nation. He said that the PPP-led government was not afraid of terrorists and would deal with such cowardly acts bravely. Riaz said that Bhatti’s murder was against the thinking of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah who had given equal rights to the minorities. Riaz warned that efforts were being made to disintegrate Pakistan, but his party would not give the anti-state elements any space to succeed in their aims at any cost. He urged the nation to follow the commitments of Quaid-e-Azam which he had made with the minorities, like giving protection of life and equal rights to them. Strongly condemning the murder of Bhatti, nominated PPP parliamentary leader in Punjab Assembly, Nazar Gondal, said that his party was proud of the assassinated minister’s services who, he added, had sacrificed his life for a patriotic reason. He also urged the media to discourage the extremists and terrorists and their activities, as they were more harmful for the country than anything else.
