Another December 16 is approaching – Shiraz Paracha

Few unwise minds controlling Pakistan’s state institutions had committed crimes against humanity in Bangladesh between the 1960s and 70s, particularly, in 1971. The same institutions and their proxies played blood games in Afghanistan in the 1980s and 90s. Consequences of those foolish adventures are now haunting Pakistan.
Recognizing and rectifying mistakes make individuals and nations stronger. Mature nations learn lessons from their mistakes. If Pakistan will offer proper, meaningful and sincere apologies to Afghanistan and Bangladesh for the blunders of few former Pakistani commanders and policymakers, it will be a step in the right direction. Such a sober act may lead to peace and reconciliation in the wider region winning new friends for Pakistan. Extending an olive branch will also place Pakistan on the high moral ground, which will be a defeat for those Pakistan bashers who portray the country as a rough state.
Another December 16 is approaching. It is an opportunity for critical self-assessment and soul searching. If we can start reflecting on our ideas, policies, strategies and actions with regard to our own people, neighbors and the larger world, we may find our way in the fog of lies, distortions and propaganda.
