Pashtun scholars’ mysterious silence on Pashtun massacre in Taftan, Balochistan – by Abdul Nishapuri
Pashtun scholars, including nationalists, progressive or right-wing scholars, remain consistently silent on Deobandi ASWJ (Sipah-e-Sahaba aka Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat)’s atrocities against Shias, Sunni Barelvis and other communities.
In most recent incident, on 8 June 2014, at least 30 Pashtuns many of them from Kohat and Orakzai Agency, including women, men and children of Shia and Sunni Barelvi/Sufi backgrounds, were massacred by Deobandi ASWJ terrorists. However, there was not a single statement or column by a Pashtun leader or scholar clearly condemning ASWJ or Deobandis on this incident. It may be noted that ASWJ is the single major terror outfit that represents and unifies all major Deobandi and Salafi terror outfits operating in Pakistan including Taliban (TTP), Al-Qaeda, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), JeM etc.
Shame on those secular, nationalist or Islamist Pashtuns who remain silent or vague on Deobandi ASWJ terrorism against Pashtun Shias and Pashtun Sunni Barelvis.
Nothing is more disgusting to see secular or nationalist Pashtuns who clearly speak against Pakistan army, Punjabis, Uzbeks, Chechens etc but remain completely silent or vague on the Sipah-e-Sahaba aka ASWJ, the one entity that represents and unifies TTP, LeJ, JeM, Jundullah, Al-Qaeda and other Deobandi and Salafi terror outfits.
They clearly condemn “Pakistan army’s brutality” against “innocent Pashtuns” in Waziristan but cat takes their tongue when it comes to clear condemnation of Deobandis or ASWJ-SSP on the massacres of Shias and Sunni Barelvis.
How many of the so called secualr Pashtuns/nationalists actually mourned and clearly condemened the massacre of at least 30 Shia and Sunni Barelvi pilgrims in Taftan, many of them Pashtuns from FATA, at the hands of Deobandi terrorists of ASWJ?
And these thugs want us to respect them and believe in their discourse. Losers!
Here are a few reports by BBC Urdu which confirm that at least 10 Pashtun women were also killed by Deobandi ASWJ terrorists in Taftan, Balochistan. Most of the massacred Pashtuns belonged to Kohat and Orakzai Agency.

Postscript:
We clearly condemn target killings of Baloch and Pashtun nationalists by Deobandi and Salafi/Wahabi proxies of rogue pro-Saudi elements in Pakistan’s security establishment. It is in the interest of all Sunnis, Shias, Balochs, Pashtuns, Sindhis, Punjabis, Gilgitis etc to politically and phsyically fight and eliminate Deobandi and Salafi terrorists, particularly those belonging to Sipah-e-Sahaba, ASWJ, the one terror outfit that unites and enshrines Al-Qaeda, Taliban, JeM, LeJ and other terrorist outfits in Pakistan.
On Liberals hypocrisy
by Ale Natiq
80s and 90s: SSP killed Shia en masse. Shias retaliated by target killing SSP leaders. Urban Liberals were not happy with Shias.
Late 90s to 2010: Shias stopped retaliating to prove they are genuinely ‘mazloom’. SSP changed name to ASWJ, continued killing Shias more ruthlessly. Liberals were still not impressed.
Last few years: Shias complained they are being oppressed, marginalized and demanded freedom to practice their religion and rituals with more assertiveness. Liberals sided with ASWJ and asked for ban on Ashura and all processions.
Basically, these educated urbanite elite just want Shias to keep dying like sitting ducks in a country where state is party to their genocide and blame the victim even if they try to defend their life. All this, just to satisfy some idealistic Gandhian dreams of these elitist burgers who have a secular progressive outlook but have a Yazid in their tummy?

Where is the mystery in this? The eyeless sockets that stare from Pashtun nationalists’ skulls cannot see the blood that spills from the veins of Toori and Bangash lads.
The massacre of Turi and other Shia Pashtuns in Kurram Agency has gone on since 1986 and in the recent years has spread to Orakzai Agency, the valleys of Tirah, Hangu, and Kohat. When have Pashtun nationalists really rallied against it? Which tribal affinity has impeded Bangash slaying Bangash? There is little difficulty understanding the ongoing massacre of Shia Pashtuns in these areas, perpetrated with diabolical success by other Pashtuns spurred by their doctrinal contempt for the individual in the name of religion. There is no mystery about the killing hills and valleys of Upper Kurram Agency where thousands have been murdered and several hundred thousand live under permanent siege, cut off from the world and without even the basic supplies and medicines. Their landscapes are blazing with conflagration. Even your own activists do not bemoan the atrocities in Kurram Agency because it does not make them popular. However, they do rave and rant about the Hazara-genocide in Quetta (another true calamity) because it sells and thus assists self-aggrandisement. The apathy of Pakistan’s black liberalism and sordid nationalism is indistinguishable from the horror.
To call it a mystery is to play into the hands of Shia-genocide-deniers and bigots, giving them an exculpatory dignity they do not deserve, as if the Shias in Pakistan are the victims of some implacable destiny about which they can do nothing. How can they logically condemn what they deny? To the citizens of Parachinar who have gone through a three-decade wringer of calamities, it is no mystery at all. There is no remotely comparable undertaking in persecution known to present day Pakistan, whether by intention, scale, methods, or outcome. Shia Pashtuns of Parachinar present a peculiar case. No nationality has been persecuted for so long, for so many decades as have they, often with State’s sanction backing the churchly zeal at work. In large part such persecution persists because of a politico-religious blend of Strategic Depth and Shia-hatred. Is it a mystery that the Takfiri thought demands, for clear doctrinal reasons, that Shias must be killed because of their religion? Indeed this doctrine has no territorial limits among the Muslims today; it is to be found from Indonesia to Senegal. That is no secret or mystery. Nor is there any impenetrable mystery about why the successive governments of Pakistan have done nothing to stop the slaughter of the innocents. Anti-Shiaism continues to lead to ghettos, bombed places of worship, and slain people – it is nasty, brutish, and clear.
While your heart’s desire may be to dig at some mystery, the mystery is that there is no mystery.
And remind me please, which Baluch nationalists have been killed by the Deobandi terrorists? Pashtun nationalists, yes aplenty.
Asif Zaidi,
I hope this serves as adequate reminder. I hope that unlike Pakistan’s Judiciary, which cannot bear to accept any evidence against their ASWJ darlings, you are somewhat more inclined towards facts. or Not
“Shafiq Mengal’s long-time tribal and political opponent, the former chief minister Akhtar Mengal, who heads the Balochistan National Party–Mengal (BNPM), also accuses him of killing several of BNPM workers in Wadh and Khuzdar. The Musallah Difaee Tanzeem, indeed, openly claimed responsibility for many of these murders. A BNPM official based in Khuzdar says that Shafiq Mengal and his men have adopted a two-pronged strategy in the area. “They are either killing people for their political or ideological affiliation or they are kidnapping people to demand a heavy ransom,” he says.”

Thank you, very much. May I offer some more comments, as below.
Zeba, Thanks for sharing your viewpoint. Much appreciated. Yes, some secular nationalist ideologues are still around, but the reality on the ground has changed a lot. Your or anyone’s denial will never make it go away. Acknowledging it and doing something about it might help though, to some effect. There never was a conflict in which enemy’s enemy is not a source for collaboration, if not an ally.
Unfortunately, the state’s strategy of countering Baloch nationalism with fostering Islamism has backfired, as it boomeranged in the case of Pashtuns. Give a dozen more years and, if nothing is done about it, vast swathes across Iran/Pakistan border will be infested with fundamentalists, just as they thrive on both sides of the Durrand line.
Your denial is mired in the past and not rooted in today’s dynamics. We all know that traditionally, Baloch nationalists have rejected the Islamisation project, for its ideological content and also because they rightly perceive it as part of a larger scheme to isolate individuals and make them more amenable to Islamabad’s policies. As a result, they have always opposed Islamist movements but the weakening of the nationalists through military repression is driving the activists on the ground into the arms of the jihadists, because of their capacity to provide depth, muscle, and protection.
The vast network of Deobandi madrassas in Baluchistan, ‘encouraged’ by the state to counter nationalists, today does not operate in vain. Initially, Baloch were rightly suspicious that the intelligence agencies may be using some segments of the sectarian militant groups as proxies against Baloch nationalists. However, these suspicions have of course lessened as the jihadists have truly and forcefully turned against their benefactors. A collapse of the legitimacy and authority of not only the federal government but also its provincial counterparts has further allayed the misgivings between the two groups. The teeming influence of radical Salafist ideology among Baloch militants also raises questions about its potential to gain adherents within the wider Baloch nationalist movement in Iran, as well as Pakistan and Afghanistan.
In the years to come another pure nationalist struggle (like that of Pashtuns earlier) will be devoured by religious extremism. Till such time the ground realities will be increasing driven by the unity of purpose and not ideology. An example can be seen in the recent attacks on private schools, in abhorrence of Western and girls’ education, in places like Turbat, Panjgur and Gwadar, deep in the South Baluchistan, which has been the stronghold of Baloch nationalists. The permeation of Islamist ideology into the South indicates a progressive radicalization that threatens a further spread into currently non-Taliban influenced Districts. Baluchistan had not recorded any terrorist or insurgent attacks on education facilities till now. This new threat further compounds the already poor educational access and high dropout rate in the Province and will drive more people to Madrassas and extremism.
As I said, once again Pakistan’s stupid ideology of propping Islamist extremism for short term gains is rebounding on it to full view in the concourse of time. The diminishing of Baluch nationalism is bound to be an ineluctable side-effect in the process. The visible connivance between Baluch nationalists and jihadists in killing Panjabi workers and Shias plays straight into hands of Jihadists. And the dim-witted state of Pakistan still sees Baloch nationalists as greater enemy and bigger evil than Islamist extremist forces.
Pakistan’s ‘March of Folly’ continues and if your denial could wish away this particular instance in it, I would be the happiest for it.
