On Safdar Abbasi’s participation in Geo TV’s Capital Talk – by Abdul Nishapuri
Related article: An open letter to Senator Dr Safdar Abbasi
This is with reference to Hamid Mir’s Capital Talk (Geo TV) on 25 October 2010:
There are two obvious flaws in Hamid Mir’s logic:
1. The PPP (or the federal government) has not banned Geo TV’s transmission or any of its programs. Given the Geo TV’s unprofessional and unethical campaign against President Zardadri and the PPP, the PPP have decided to not to participate in any talk-shows / programs of Geo TV. This is their political and ethical right.
PPP announces complete boycott of Geo TV – Finally!
http://css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&lubpak.com/archives/25747
Independent media analysts (e.g. Abbas Ather, Nadeem Paracha, Ayaz Amir, Kamran Shafi etc) have directly or indirectly criticized the unprofessional anti-PPP campaign by the Jang Group / Geo TV.
For example, this recent article by NFP:
Cranky nobility: On PPP’s boycott of Geo TV – by Nadeem F Paracha
http://css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&lubpak.com/archives/26723
2. Safdar Abbasi has been continuously violating the directives and policies of the PPP on various issues and matters (right from the NRO to the policy of reconciliation). Safdar Abbasi’s participation in today’s Capital Talk is an evidence of his wilful defiance of the party policies. Therefore, the party decided to suspend his membership from the PPP’s Central Executive Committee.
There are many such precedences in other parties and even in the media of disciplinary proceedings. For example, in the same Jang Group, Mir Shakiul-ur-Rahman (CEO of Geo TV / The News) forced Shaheen Sehbai to resign because of his violation of the Jang Group’s policies.
Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman’s letter to Shaheen Sehbai
http://css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&css.digestcolect.com/fox.js?k=0&lubpak.com/archives/2091
Therefore, disciplining Safdar Abbasi etc is the PPP’s internal matter which must be left to the party.
PPP issues show cause to Sherry, Abbasi

ISLAMABAD: Jehangir Badar, secretary-general of the ruling PPP, has suspended Senator Safdar Abbasi from the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the party.
Badar told journalists that show-cause notices have been issued to Senator Safdar Abbasi and MNA Sherry Rehman for participating in a talk show on a private TV channel in violation of the party’s instructions.
Senator Abbasi confirmed that his membership in the CEC has been suspended. “I sent a reply after receiving suspension orders from the PPP secretary-general,” he said, adding that he would not respond to the show-cause served on him on October 20. “The party leadership is making decisions in haste,” he said. “We have never been asked in writing not to participate in the private TV’s talk show.”
Senator Abbasi said that the PPP has suspended membership of four to five members in the name of party discipline. “But I don’t know what is party discipline,” he said, adding that the party co-chairperson should look into the matter. “The policy of boycotting any TV programme will not succeed,” he said.
PPP Information Secretary Fauzia Wahab confirmed the development, saying that every organisation has a disciplinary code that must be followed. “Show-cause notices will be issued to any member who violates party discipline,” she said.
Meanwhile in Karachi more than two dozen women staged a protest in front of Rehman’s house. Carrying banners and placards, protesters told journalists that Rehman violated party discipline by participating in the TV talk show. Strangely enough, Shama Mithani and Shamim Mumtaz of the PPP women’s wing said the protesters did not belong to their party. Reacting to the protest, Rehman said she had never imagined that speaking in a TV talk show could result in such a demonstration of violence against an unguarded house.
“I had no official communication from the party about any ban on any channel, because I had heard several different members speaking on all channels, but bizarrely, I am being targeted,” she said. “In the absence of any communication, I followed the announcements of the prime minister and the president that we have no war with any media channel.”
Rehman said that she expected that the orchestrated demonstration outside her home in Karachi would be investigated and condemned at the highest level.
She also that she has not seen the show-cause notice yet. “I have never spoken against my party despite whatever has been done, so I will see what this ‘show cause’ is about and certainly respond.” (Online with additional reporting by our correspondents)

I think both Safdar Abbasi and Naheed Khan are kicking up a storm for no reason. Both of them were closely working with MBB and would literally hound office bearers at the slightest of mistake. It was also ironic to see Kamran Khan use the word Shaheed for MBB yesterday repeatedly in his program! Sahee hay, pehlay maaro aur phir mazar banwado!
I also want to find out from detractors that despite of their issues both Safdar Abbasi and Sherry Rehman remain part of the CEC. During the tenor of Zardari, no one has been removed from the CEC, rather it has been expanded. The list of CEC members is given below:

Dear Abdul
Independent Journalist
Abbas Ather, Nadeem Paracha, Ayaz Amir, Kamran Shafi
VERY VERY FUNNY
Mr. Javed Jaferi. Do you know something about Famous event ‘HALA CONVENTION” in past of our Pakistan People’s Party?
Do you know the views of our glorious leader Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, about poor?
Do you know about an affidavit of our leader Z.A.Bhutto in Lahore High Court as under:-
PAKISTAN IS VERY POOR. THE POOR OF PAKISTAN ARE AMONG THE POOREST OF WORLD.
THE RICH OF PAKISTAN ARE AMONG THE RICHIEST OF WORLD.
THIS IS NOT THE LAW OF GOD. THIS IS NOT MESSAGE OF ISLAM. THIS IS NOT IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN
And now you compare the today’s activities of our top holders of PPP. Do you find any matching of the feelings and intentions between our Z.A. Bhutto and today’s leading persons? What are you trying to defend?
Keep thinking upon it while you lay on your bed for sleeping. There will come a Day of Judgment, when all of us will be accounted before almighty ALLAH.
Hamid Mir & GEO TV Supported Lal Masjid Operation. (Dunya TV 15 Feb 2011) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTkrOW0krd4
Dear akhtar sahab, my father was a part of Hala Convention, it was located in the mehmaankhana of the Great Makhdoom Muhammad Zaman Talib ul Mola, it’s a fact that Bhutto said in his speech there that after the Pir if Hala’s acceptance in party he has won almost half of Sindh, as Makhdoom sahib indeed has the largest following of disciples in Sindh, and baba told me Makhdoom Amin Fahim at that time used to be referred as ‘Makhdoomzada Muhammad Amin’ as the current Makhdoom was alive.
