In Pakistan, rogue elments makes list of Shia professionals, Deobandi militants shoot them
Surveillance, verification and investigation of the print and electronic media commenced two months ago in Lahore by the MI, confirm journalists while reacting to The News report, “MI goes from door-to-door to get information on journalists”, said one. A similar door-to-door exercise commenced in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.
“I live in the Shaheen Colony of Walton, Lahore Cantt, and I have noticed the movement of suspicious people around my house at different time during the last week. A few days ago, two men on a motorcycle came to my locality and sought information about me and my family. They contacted a local shopkeeper and asked questions about me and my family including whether I am Shia or not, etc.
“On Sunday, a motorcyclist chased my car in the Cavalry Ground area”, says Tanveer Shehzad who works in the Urdu section of Radio Deutsche Welle. He is also the elected President of the Electronic Media Reporters Association. He told The News that this happened about two months ago and the questions being asked were similar to the ones posed to The News. “My family is still shaken. By the grace of God, I, as a professional journalist, have a long neat and clean career and never involved in any kind of illegal activity“, he added.
The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) in Lahore was approached by several other journalists who were also being harassed with a similar questionnaire shown to The News. “We requested them to look into this matter as we are ready to face any kind of investigations if there is any thing objectionable on our part.
The News was also informed that some journalists have taken the questionnaire in stride and filled the two pages written in Urdu. Journalists of a Lahore based television channel were given this form and it was duly filled by them.
“We had no other option. We were told by the management that we had to fill the form and we obliged”, says one journalist from the channel.“But in a latest development, I came to know that same situation is also happened with some other Lahore based journalists including a Geo TV reporter. We are consulting with journalist friends and are also in contact with Punjab Union of Journalists and Lahore Press Club. We have increased our vigilance level and hope the situation will be better soon”, says another journalist from Lahore who did not want to be identified.
Senior journalist Ishrat Hyat, working in The News, and writing on non-political issues, says that a similar exercise took place at her residence in Rawalpindi, when she was out of town.

The Military Intelligence (MI) has initiated a country wide exercise, where they are knocking at the doors of journalists and columnists seeking help in providing them details about themselves in a two-page form in Urdu, for what they say is a verification process. The News saw the names of nearly a hundred well known media personalities, including women journalists who live on their own and even included one columnist who is a sitting member of Parliament.
Selected journalists and columnists stationed in Rawalpindi come under 10 Corps, say MI officials and a two-member team is assigned to gather personal details from these journalists, including four journalists presently working with The News.
This correspondent was approached by two polite officials on Tuesday, who identified themselves from the MI and said that they had visited several times before, but were told that the correspondent was away.
The MI, according to Wikipedia, is “tasked with operations, identifying and eliminating sleeper cells, foreign agents and other anti-Pakistani elements within Pakistan”, so it is mind-boggling which category the media comes under. The MI is currently headed by a two-star general, Major-General Naushad Ahmed Kayani, nominated by the COAS himself.
After reading dozens of questions which had to be answered, this correspondent wrote at the end of the questionnaire, in space provided for remarks, “ As a working journalist, the Constitution and the laws of the land do not oblige me to provide the Military Intelligence with such personal and intimate information”.
Though the questionnaire was presented under the garb of ensuring ‘security clearance’ for events hosted by the Pakistan military, it was clear that it was much, much more than that.
It is indeed shocking at the details that the MI is interested in. Apart from the journalist’s name, father’s name, CNIC number and other details easily available from Nadra, it was also obligatory to specify one’s religion and whether one was a Sunni or Shia. If you wished to put Islam in the desired column it was not enough. Details were needed whether one had any strong affiliation with any religious group and if one had been involved in any illegal activity.
According to Wikipedia, the MI directorate is composed of Air Intelligence (AI) of Air Force, Naval Intelligence (Navy), Army Intelligence (Pakistan Army), and the Directorate for Marine Intelligence of the Marines. However, the MI is part of the Army and reports directly to the chief of army staff. And, the Army has appointed its officers to lead the agency. Pakistan’s Military Intelligence (MI) is one of the three main intelligence services in Pakistan.

Context: Target killing of Shia professionals
As a part of the Shia genocide, at least 20,000 Shia Muslims have been killed in Pakistan by Pakistan army-sponsored Deobandi militant groups (Taliban, Sipah Sahaba). At least 200 medical doctors, hundreds of other professionals including teachers, journalists, lawyers, engineers, police officers, poets, businesspersons and others have been killed. Their only crime? They follow the Shia sect of Islam.

Only in one month (November 2012), more than 80 Shia Muslims were killed in Pakistan by Takfiri Deobandi terrorists.
The central media cell of Majlis-e-Wehdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) on Saturday said 80 Shiites had been killed in the month of November 2012 in numerous acts of terrorism and targeted attacks across Pakistan. In its monthly report issued, MWM said twenty-eight Shiites were martyred in Sindh province, of them 26 were murdered in targeted attacks in Karachi alone. Two Shiites were martyred in attack on Ashura procession in Khairpur district.Twenty-seven Shiites were martyred in the Punjab province. Twenty three Shiites were martyred due to suicidal attack on Moharram mourning procession in Rawalpindi. Grenades were also hurled and firing was also launched before suicide attacks. Four Shiites were martyred in Sargodha district. In Balochistan province, 14 Shia Muslims were martyred. Among them nine were attacked in Quetta. Four more were targeted in the Hub city.Eleven Shiites were martyred in Khyber-Pukhtoonkhwa pro-vince. Ten of them were martyred in two attacks on 9th of Moharram and Ashura processions in Dera Ismail Khan. The report further said that despite the tall claims made by the government, it had failed to arrest a network of terrorists involved in the genocide of Shiite in Pakistan. http://www.shafaqna.com/english/countries/pakistan/item/9737-80-shia-killed-in-pakistan-in-nov-mwm.html
The phenomenon has been described as Shia genocide by various media outlets including Al Jazeera, Dawn, Daily Times, Press TV and Express Tribune.

As an outcome of army-sponsored anti-Shia violence in Pakistan, now ordinary Shia Muslims have started receiving threatening messages via SMS.
Shias, targeted in numerous explosions and target killings, are now receiving death threat text messages on cellphones ahead of a key event in their religious calendar that has been tainted by violence in the past. “Kill, Kill, Shias,” say the text warnings to members of the minority sect. Hardline Sunni Deobandi groups (Sipah Sahaba and Taliban) linked to al Qaeda have in recent months stepped up attacks against Shias, whom they regard as non-Muslims.

On 04.12.2012 the European Parliament in Brussels organized a program to discuss atrocities committed on the name of relgion. For this program the key note speaker was Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the supreme head of Ahamdiyya Muslim Community. Now just see the news printed by “The News” of Pakistan in national news under the heading of, “European MPs want Pakistan to check sectarian killings”. All speakers have been mentioned except Ahmadiyya Community Leader, Mirza Masroor Ahmad. What is this? Can you comment on it?

KHALIFA OF ISLAM MAKES HISTORIC ADDRESS AT EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad calls for peace through unity
On 4 December 2012, the World Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat and Fifth Khalifa, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad delivered an historic keynote address at the European Parliament in Brussels to a packed audience of more than 350 guests representing 30 countries.
The event was hosted by the newly launched ‘European Parliament Friends of Ahmadiyya Muslims Group’, whose Chair and Vice-Chairs all took to the stage to welcome Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad. Martin Schulz MEP and President of the European Parliament also came to meet with His Holiness.
During his thirty-five minute address, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad called on the European Union to preserve its unity; addressed the issue of increased immigration to Western countries; advocated for equality in international relations and spoke at length about Islam’s key teachings in relation to developing world peace.
Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said that in the modern world many people viewed Islam as a religion that promoted violence and extremism and blamed it for many of the conflicts taking place in various parts of the world. He said that such allegations were particularly unjust given that “the very meanings of the world Islam are ‘peace’ and ‘security’.”
The Khalifa spoke about widespread concerns over increasing levels of immigration to Western countries. In a detailed analysis, His Holiness said the issue was leading to the spread of ‘restlessness and anxiety’. His Holiness blamed both the immigrants and the indigenous people for the state of conflict, whereby many immigrants provoked locals by refusing to integrate, whilst certain segments of the local society were intolerant to outsiders. He said the consequences of such division were far reaching and so he called on all parties to work together to resolve the issues.
Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:
“Governments need to make policies that establish and protect mutual respect, through which hurting the sentiments of others or causing them any type of harm should be outlawed. With regard the immigrants, they must enter with a willingness to integrate with the local people, whilst the locals should be ready to open their hearts and display tolerance.”
About the European Union, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:
“The formation of the European Union has been a great achievement on the part of the European countries, for it has been a means of uniting this Continent. And so you should make all possible efforts to preserve this unity… Remember that the strength of Europe lies in it remaining united and together as one. Such unity will not only benefit you here in Europe but at a global level will be the means for this Continent to maintain its strength and influence.”
The Khalifa spoke of the need not just for co-operation within Europe, but called for global unity. His Holiness said:
“Speaking from an Islamic perspective, we should strive for the entire world to unite together. In terms of currency the world should be united. In terms of business and trade the world should be united. And in terms of freedom of movement and immigration, cohesive and practical policies should be developed, so that the world can become united.”
The Khalifa said that in the modern world countries could no longer afford to remain isolated and even global powers like the United States were dependent on international trade and foreign relations. He said developed countries ought not to exploit weaker nations but should seek to help them develop and succeed.
Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad also spoke about conflicts in the Arab World and Middle East. He said that whilst the Western world had openly expressed ‘outrage and concern’ at the situations in Syria and Libya, they did not seem as concerned about the plight of the Palestinian people.
Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad said:
“This perceived double standard is causing grievances and malice to increase in the hearts of people from Muslim countries against the major powers of the world. This anger and animosity is extremely dangerous and could boil over and explode at any time… Let it be clear that I am not speaking in support or favour of any particular individual country. What I wish to say is that all forms of cruelty, wherever they exist, must be eradicated and stopped, regardless of whether they are perpetrated by the people of Palestine, the people of Israel or the people of any other country.”
The Khalifa also criticised the principle of veto power within international institutions. He said that the voting history of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council showed that on certain occasions veto powers had been misused to assist cruelty, rather than to prevent it.
Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad concluded by calling for justice and equality. He said:
“Always remember that peace can only be established by helping both the oppressed and the oppressor in a manner that is completely impartial, free from vested interests and devoid of all enmity. Peace is made by giving all parties an equal platform and playing field.”
Before the keynote address a number of MEPs took to the stage and spoke of their admiration of peaceful Islam as advocated by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat.
Dr Charles Tannock MEP, Chair of the European Parliament Friends of Ahmadiyya Muslims Group, said ‘Ahmadi Muslims are a welcome example of tolerance in the world.’ He condemned the persecution of Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan and said ‘the Ahmadi motto of Love for All, Hatred for None is a welcome antidote to the extremist Jihadists’.
Tunne Kelam MEP, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament Friends of Ahmadiyya Muslims Group, said he was attending the event because it was an opportunity to ‘join in an aspiration for peace’. He praised the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat for ‘rejecting all violence and terrorism’ and pledged to support the Jamaat globally.
Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament Friends of Ahmadiyya Muslims Group, spoke of her long term relationship with the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in the United Kingdom. She said that the Jamaat’s motto was ‘an inspiration which we desperately need in the modern world.’
Claude Moraes MEP, Vice-Chair of the European Parliament Friends of Ahmadiyya Muslims Group, said the event had ‘attracted a bigger turnout than we get to any meetings at the European Parliament’.
Jean Lambert MEP, Chair of European Parliament’s South Asia Delegation, said that she would pursue with the Pakistani Government the issue of Ahmadi Muslim voting rights. She said it was necessary that all parties had the right to vote freely and without discrimination.
The President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in the United Kingdom, Rafiq Hayat, also took to the stage to express his pleasure that the ‘European Parliament Friends of Ahmadiyya Muslims Group’ had been launched.
The historic event concluded at 4.35pm with a silent prayer led by Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad.
To me it looks more appropriate if LUBP can print the whole proceedings impartially. What ever has been said irrespective of ethnicity or religious belief should be honeslty reported.
