“French like Revolution” Are you sure, Sir? – by Suleman Akhtar

Revolution in thoughts or revelation from stars, I’m not sure what prompted QET Altaf Hussain to articulate a French like revolution idea, intertwining it with Military coup in the same breath. I switched television channel as  if his name was mistakenly blinking on news slide but I, myself was fallacious as it revealed later.

Political dictionary of Pakistan is already exhaustive with some heavy  revolutionary terms i.e “Sharia Revolution” of JI, “Justice Revolution” of PTI, “Bloody Revolution” of Mian Shahbaz Sharif and now we have been  introduced with this French “like” Revolution by QET Altaf Hussain which is strangely associated with “patriotic Generals” (As this term used by him) of our noble Army. Acknowledging my limited understanding and narrow conscious I’m incapable to comprehend this ideological mélange presented by QET Altaf Hussain.

Notwithstanding, let’s try to make it simple for us. According to Jeff Goodwin, a  Revolution is “any and all instances in which a state and political regime is overthrown and thereby  transformed by a popular movement in an irregular, extra constitutional and/or violent fashion” . There are many (debatable)  socio-economic factors attributed to this drastic change in society depending  upon its different modes i.e social, proletarian/communist, failed/abortive revolutions. While, taking into account French Revolution (1789-1799), that was the period during which whole social fabric of state metamorphosed from absolute monarchy to radical democratic republic separating Church from state affairs. Countless socioeconomic factors, particularly whole  Renaissance Movement played vital role in paving the way for revolution.

Ignore, what was uttered about endorsing Martial Law/ Military coup by QET, it is not even worth wasting time or words upon. Let’s stick to pros and cons of a revolution in Pakistan. First and foremost, Multi-ethnicity of our region which is chief impediment in the way of collective/massive revolt as till now we’re not a nation as per any definition and highly supercilious when it comes to racial prejudice. Even under normal circumstances, ethnic violence  deliberately deteriorating the social structure of Karachi. Secondly,  inadequacy of some collectively acknowledged doctrine, as different school of thoughts widely prevail in this pluralistic society rendering almost  impossible for all the inhabitants to gather beneath a single flag of  struggle. At third, an extremely violent society where all sort of weapons are  readily available and different religious and ethnic groups don’t hesitate to use them every now and then would highly be vulnerable to chaos/anarchy  and end up with nothing.

So, where’s the solution? In my humble opinion Democracy, let me repeat, Parliamentary Democracy. This is the only solution if we really want to get rid of our centuries’ old misery. The system, which is capable of embracing different  entities to let them work inside a common frame irrespective of their political, ethnic and/or religious affiliations. Undoubtedly, there are many flaws among persisting political administration but democracy itself is self reforming system always leaning towards betterment. Steady and gradual change towards prosperity is call of time. Listen to it !
