Shahbaz Sharif – a real darling of right-wing media, establishment and Taliban – by Junaid Qaiser

Mian Shahbaz Sharif proudly identifies a number of commonalities between Taliban and PML-N, i.e., opposition to foreign dictation, stance against General Musharraf, and strong position against Kerry-Lugar Bill and the USA. It’s quite true that Nawaz Sharif and his League are Zia’s remnants and have same background. What the nation is reaping now was sown by the dictator,  General Zia-ul-Haq (political father of Sharif brothers), an agenda which was further extended by General Pervaiz Musharaff with the help of conservative right wing Parties.

One of the nastiest tragedies that occurred during 20 years long dark night ruled by Gen Zia and Musharaf was arming of the Islamist right wing parties as well as granting the training facilities throughout the whole country. Its fact that all Right wing voters in Punjab voted PMLN due to its soft corner towards right wing politics. PMLN’s still major vote bank residing and studying in Maddaras, so nation won’t see ever that PMLN’s top brass would condemn Taliban, Talibanization or their inhuman atrocities.

Just imagine for a moment had president Asif Ali Zardari been requested to the Taliban to spare Sindh, we are quite sure that media and PMLN (True partners of establishment), had been launched a massive campaign against President of Pakistan, they surly had been filed a case of high treason and chief justice possibly initiated sue motto action and passed remarks on that statement. Now question arise why media, judiciary and pro establishment right wing parties i.e JI and PTI have let Shahbaz Sharif go for such a dangerous, gigantic and anti Pakistan statement?? Why all pro establishment sections are silent??

Pakistan is a true federation, consist of five provinces, including newly formed semi province Gilgit Baltistan, which is one of a biggest success of Pakistan Peoples Party, Azad Kashmir and other federal units. We as a nation need to pose a question to Chief Minister Punjab how could he says that spare Punjab and do whatever in other provinces and FATA??

Being Cheif Minister of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif enjoys special status in present political scenario, he can meet easily to Chief of Army staff and chief justice and discuss with them matters related to democracy, terrorism, judicial system and issues relating to internal and external security issues plus foreign policy etc. He is able to ‘violate’ openly, principles set in Charter of Democracy, singed by former Prime ministers Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif. Now it becomes open secret that he is very much on board and has good working relationship with powerful hidden hands. Remember he was too much rejuvenated, excited and encouraged his “Dates” and “Coffee” with Kayani.

Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer rightly stated that with the entire country facing the threat of terror, Punjab CM Shahbaz Sharif has indirectly pledged support for Taliban by saying they should not target Punjab, thereby creating a negative distinction with the rest of the country. He also said that Punjab has been embarrassed, and that such statements will only embolden Sipah-e-Sahaba and the Taliban. He said that he feared the Punjab Government wanted to Talibanise Punjab.Taseer alleged that the federal government is in the dark about safe houses and alleged that they were being run by Punjab Law Minister, Rana Sanaullah. He said deciding the foreign policy of the country is not responsibility of a chief minister. In essence,

Shahbaz’s pro Taliban comments were greeted with surprise and shock by the people, including foreign analysts and commentators. Whole nation slammed Shahbaz Sharif, for his anti federation and anti state statement, saying the Chief Minister’s comments amounted to bowing down before the militants. Shahbaz Sharif seems to plead that instead of targeting Punjab, where right wing PML-N rules, Taliban terrorist should better target other provinces (e.g. Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan etc) where ruling governments of PPP, ANP, and MQM are explicitly against the Taliban’s jihadi and sectarian agenda..Earlier Pakistanis have condemned and criticized PML-N leader and provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah for hob-nobbing with leaders of the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba group while campaigning for recent by-polls. Governor Punjab Salman Taseer alleged the PML-N-led government had a hand in the release of convicted members of militant groups.

Now its open secret that we are at war and terrorists, their bases and training centers do exist in Pakistan. They kill non-combatant civilians and attack and destroy military installations and other government installations, especially those in the northwestern region of the country. They come mainly from religious militant groups, notably the Taliban and their affiliates. These militants are at war with the state of Pakistan and the Pakistan Army is fighting them with all the means at its disposal. It is very sad fact that while Pakistani militants spilled the blood and slit the throats of their own countrymen, our right wing political parties living in the state of denial. we have yet to see a public statement denouncing and condemning these terrorist acts by our religious right wing parties, including PMLN.
