Deobandi radicalisation at Rizwan Farook’s mosque and the San Bernardino tragedy

The Dar al Uloom Islamiyah of San Bernardino is the mosque frequented by Rizwan Farooq who along with his wife perpetrated the San Bernardino massacre.  The Dar al Uloom Islamiyah hosted anti-Semitic Deobandi and Salafi hate clerics like Yasir Qadhi and others

Background: Dar al Uloom is a term usually used for Deobandi Madrassas in South Asia. Deobandi madrassas and mosques are the recruiting grounds for the Taliban and other radical Deobandi terrorist groups like ASWJ-LeJ, JeM, Jundullah, Jamaat ul Ahrar. Deobandism is the South Asian variant of Wahhabism (also referred to as Salafism)

The Deobandis in South Asia received a major boost of support when they along with Wahhabis exclusively comprised the Pakistan army and CIA backed “Mujahideen” during the so-called “Afghan Jihad” against the former Soviet Union in the 1980s.  The remnants of these mujahideen were  later they were re branded as Taliban and provided sanctuary to the same Al Qaeda terrorists who attacked the United States on 9/11.

Today, nearly all the major terrorist acts committed globally by religious extremists are perpetrated by radical Wahhabi and Deobandi groups like ISIS/Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, Taliban, Al Shabab and ASWJ-LeJ.

Present Day: Dar al Uloom Islamiyah of San Bernardino was a mosque frequented by Farooq and Tafsheen the mass murdering couple. While we are now being subjected to the same obfuscatory media reports there there is no explanation regarding the couple’s  radicalization, we should look at the speaker’s roster published by the mosque on their own facebook page. It is full of Deobandi hate clerics, most notably Yasir Qadhi of Deoband.

Yasir Qadhi

Here is Yasir Qadhi spewing hate against Christians, Jews and anyone that does not follow his radical literalist Deobandi Wahhabi ideology, this means most Sunnis and all Shias are targets as well:

There are some of the other Deobandi clerics to on the San Bernardino mosque roster  (details featured at end).  However, one cannot ignore the most damning report to emerge regarding this couple’s connections to the notorious Deobandi Lal Masjid of Pakistan.  As per media reports

ISLAMABAD: Investigations into California shooting have led to a shocking revelation that the female suspected shooter identified as Tashfeen Malik was in contact with Islamabad’s Laal Masjid, sources quoted a senior United States (US) official as saying.  ARY News senior correspondent Amir Ghouri on Friday quoted his sources as saying that a senior US official today called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in London and conveyed him a message from US President Barack Obama.

The Laal Masjid and its Deobandi leader, Maulana Abdul Aziz is the prominent ISIS recruiter in Pakistan and his female madrassa students have pledged allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi in a publically disseminated video.

Could Tashfeen Malik have been one of these female pledges amidst the group of Burqa clad women?

The United States can no longer ignore Deobandi radicalisation and its clear links with global based Wahhabi militancy.  US Deobandi evangelists like Nouman Ali Khan are prominent in converting moderate Sunni muslims to this literalist, anti-culture and stark sect of Islam.

Like its ideological variant Wahhabism, Deobandism shares common roots and an admiration for medieval polemicists and hate mongers like Ibne Taymiyyah. Deobandis eschew the peaceful and music traditions of commemorating the Holy Prophet’s birthday and the sacrifice of his grandson, Imam Hussain. The traditions of Eid un Milad Nabi and Ashura are meant to sensitise muslims to the human values of peace and justice –  and both traditions are commemorated jointly by the majority of Sunni and Shia muslims worldwide.

Deobandi and Wahhabi muslim sects stress on de-sensitising and literalist rituals which seek to apostatise differing viewpoints within Islam by misrepresenting them as “polytheism” and “innovation”.

Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik’s increasing connections to the hardline Deobandi and Wahhabi ideology should not be brushed away under the carpet. Doing so only risks more tragedies like San Bernardino.
