Yazid’s children: Islami Jamiat Talaba’s attack on Shia students at Punjab University
According to news reports, extremist Deobandi-Wahhabi affiliates of Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) on Thursday 22 December 2011 attacked Shia students of the Punjab University with bamboo sticks and stones and opened the indiscriminate firing to sabotage a program of Youm-e-Hussain (as) to mark the sacrifice of grandson of the Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) Hazarat Imam Hussain (as) and his companions in Karbala. The thirteen Shia students including former Central President of ISO Mr Arif Qanbari were critically injured in the firing and attack by extremist Deobandi-Wahhabi terrorists of IJT, an affiliate of Sipah-e-Sahaba and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. (Source)
A Punjab University spokesman told Press Trust of India that the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT, student wing of right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami) and Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) had requested the university administration some days ago to allow them to organise their activities on the campus. The Imamia Student Organisation (ISO), a group of Shia students, wanted to hold a function to mark the death anniversary of Hazrat Imam Husain while the Islami Jamiat Tulba (IJT), the student wing of the pro-Taliban Jamaat-e- Islami, announced it would organise ”Shan-e-Sahaba” at the same venue at the same time. Sipah-e-Sahaba (banned anti-Shia militant organization) students are a part of the IJT at the Punjab University. “The IJT was allowed to organise its activity with the condition that the ISO would also hold its function so that both organisations were dealt with on an equal basis,” the spokesman said. “The IJT organised its event but tried to stop the ISO”s gathering by force,” the spokesman said. He said varsity guards too were injured in the incident. (Source)
PU sources told the clash began when ISO students informed the PU administration they planned to celebrate ‘Youm-e-Hussain’ (Day of Hussain) at the Chemical departments ground. While the ISO began to display posters of the event, the IJT brewed trouble maintaining no one but they could organize religious events at the campus. At 1030am on Thursday, when both the IJT and ISO tried to hold events at the Chemical departments ground, a scuffle between 100 armed IJT members and around 60 ISO members broke out. Both chanted slogans against the other while gun fire was heard across the campus, which sent regular students packing their bags and rushing out of campus. PU sources said the administration and senior teachers realised the matter could not be handled by PU security staff and police was called to disperse the scuffle. However, despite the arrival of police, the stone-throwing continued for an hour which injured a number of students. An IJT member was also reported to have opened aerial fire. IJT members, however, squared the blame on the PU admin, and PU Vice Chancellor, for allowing the ISO to observe the ‘Youm-e-Hussain’ and purposefully inciting the clash to secure an extension. (Source)
The official version: Speaking on the violence, the PU spokesman said the four year policy of the current PU administration to disallow student organisations from organising any activities had been vindicated. He said the IJT and ISO had asked the administration to allow them to organise events a few days ago, after which the PU admin allowed IJT to organise its event upon the condition the ISO would also hold an event on equal basis. He said after the IJT organised its event, they confronted the ISO when it tried to organise its event. He said on Wedesday evening, a student organization pasted a poster to organise a “Shan-e-Sahaba” conference at the Chemical department ground at the time allotted to the ISO. Later than night, IJT members opened aerial fire in the hostel area. He said the PU admin informed police, who requested the admin to restrain the ISO from holding their event to avoid any clash. He said the PU admin subsequently told ISO members the permission for the event had been withdrawn and they must postpone the event, which they refused. He said senior members of the PU security force were injured in the stone-throwing and IJT members, including Atif Gujjar, kidnapped two PU security force members, Waqar Sarwar Butt and Abdul Aziz, on gunpoint and took them to an unknown destination. He said of the two Abdul Aziz was released but Waqar Butt was still in IJT custody. He promised action against students according to PU rules and regulations and held the IJT responsible for firing incidents and other crimes at the campus. He said the IJT had not kept its commitment and showed its prejudices. (Source)
Shia student leaders Syed Nasir Abbas Sherazi and Abid Hussain said the Shia organisation had taken permission from the varsity administration to hold Yaum-i-Imam Hussain on the Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology ground. They said that they had displayed posters about holding of the event. Shia leaders told Dawn that the organisation’s members, who were supposed to make arrangements for the event, found that water had been released in the ground where it was to be held. They said the roganisers then urged the varsity administration to allow them to hold the even at the Faisal Auditorium. They claimed that vice-chancellor was also scheduled to speak at the Yaum-i-Hussain event. While the ISO members were gathering in front of Faisal Auditorium, they said, the IJT activists armed with weapons and batons attacked and severely thrashed them. The ISO leaders also alleged that the IJT activists used derogatory language against those holding Yaum-i-Hussain event and said they would not allow it on varsity campus. They informed the media persons that six ISO members, Arif Qanbri, Nasir Hussain, Abid Hussain, Ali Waseem, Ali Murtaza and Akhtar Ali, were seriously injured while four others were missing. They alleged that the missing students had been kidnapped by the IJT activists. Later, at a news conference, the ISO leaders announced three-day mourning and vowed they won’t allow any student organisation or sect to establish its hegemony in the varsity. They also alleged that the IJT activists had been threatening ISO members since last night and had even resorted to aerial firing in hostels’ area at around 1am. They said the Jamiat activists had also thrashed some Shia students residing in varsity hostels. (Source)
IJT Punjab Nazim Rasool Khan Babar and PU acting Nazim Amir Yaqoob held PU vice-chancellor responsible for the sectarian clash as he had permitted the ISO to hold the Hussain Day event. They claimed that they had informed the varsity administration in writing to stop the event as it might lead to a sectarian clash. (Source)
Fake liberals: Punjab University is the stronghold of Islami Jamiat Tulaba and its status has been reinforced by prominent civil society activists and pseudo liberals who dishonestly present the ongoing violence against Pakistan’s minority Shia muslim community as “sectarian violence”. This obscures the issue and deflect attention away from groups like IJT who have always enjoyed the backing of Pakistan’s security establishment.
Samad Khurram, a prominent supporter of anti-democracy pro-army Chief Justice Chaudhary and contributor to Pk Politics and Café Pyala, was officially feted by the Islami Jamiat Tulaba at Punjab University. His achievement – opposing the drone attacks on violent militant groups and foreign Jihadi mercenaries that are affiliated with the Islami Jamiat Tulaba.
From frothing right wing ideologues to sauve Harvard educated opportunists, Islami Jamiat Tulaba has been bolstered by wide sections of Pakistan educated classes, its (fake) civil society. Yazeed is well and alive amongst Pakistan’s chattering classes.

ISO activists stage rally against Jamiat attack
LAHORE: Members of Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) and Majlis-e-Wahdat Muslemeen took out a protest rally on Friday against the recent sectarian clash at the Punjab University (PU) between Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) and ISO activists that left 16 ISO activists seriously injured. The protesters started their march from the Lahore Press Club (LPC) and ended it outside the Governor’s House. They were holding placards and were chanting slogans against the IJT and the Punjab government for not arresting the criminals. Addressing the rally, the speakers said it was extremely sad that the IJT attacked the ISO members in the presence of police. The demands put forward by the protesters included, permission from the Punjab government to hold Imam Hussain (AS) Day at PU, arrest of IJT activists involved in the attack, action against use of ammunition in the university’s premises, release of students kidnapped by the IJT, an apology from Liaqat Baloch and other Jamiat leaders over the incident, safeguard of Shia students living in PU hostels, and lastly, the protesters said that a grand operation should be launched at PU to wipe out the control of some influential groups functioning there. 300 Shia Students vacate Punjab University Hostels
“Over 300 shia students have vacated the hostels because they fear being attacked by the IJT activists,” a Shia student asking not be named said, adding “how will the administration provide security for us when their own security guards are being kidnapped.” “We will launch an anti-CM protest all over the country if a pro-IJT VC is appointed,” he said. Fiza, another PU shia student said, “Members of a banned organisation that is responsible for killing shias all over the country are present in the hostels and has weapons also. We are hearing rumours that the CM is going to make an alliance with the Jamat-i-Islami and will appoint a pro-IJT VC. We are not sure what the future of Shias would be,” adding “it is a shame that the CM did not even care to ask about those who were harmed in the sectarian violence”. (Source)

ISO officials said that they had arranged their programme with the permission of PU administration. They added that IJT activists tore posters of Yaum-e- Hussain (AS) on Wednesday, after which some members met with Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader Liaqat Baloch to inform him about the incident.
ISO activists criticised Baloch by saying that he backed IJT activists to attack the ISO event since they feared losing their influence at PU. They said that they had contacted the Muttahida Talba Mahaz and the political and religious leadership of the country and informed them about the “criminal and terrorist acts” of IJT. ISO office bearers urged the Punjab government to immediately arrest those involved in the attack.
A Punjab University spokesman responded by saying that during the past four years, the administration had not allowed any student organisation to hold events.
He alleged that the IJT was responsible for firing incidents and other crimes at the campus. He said that the incident showed the prejudices of the IJT. The spokesman added that the PU administration would take action against those students who took the law into their own hands.
Teachers and students of PU fear that if the Punjab government does not take notice of the incident it could lead to sectarianism on campus. They have also urged the authorities to take strict action against those responsible.

Addressing protesters, Majlis Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen provincial secretary-general Allama Abdul Khaliq Asadi said the IJT attacked the event that was being organised to remember Hazrat Imam Hussain.
He said the IJT not only desecrated the respect of Punjab University by attacking students with batons, bricks and firing but also violated the constitution and law.
Mr Asadi said the ISO had vice-chancellor`s written permission to hold the event, but IJT`s hooliganism had put a serious question before the government to explain if the Punjab University was a personal property of the IJT.
He also criticised Jamaat-i-Islami secretary-general Liaquat Baloch who had backed Jamaat`s student wing despite the fact that he was informed about the attitude of the IJT time and again.
Other speakers regretted that the police played the role of a silent spectator and had failed to arrest any culprit responsible for the clash between two organisations.
They said the ISO had announced three-day mourning and launched country-wide protest demonstrations across the country.
Speakers demanded that the government should ensure that the Yaum-i-Imam Hussain be organised on the Punjab University campus, those responsible for Thursday`s clash be arrested and brought to book.
The police should take action against those who brandished firearms and ensure the recovery of kidnapped students.
They also demanded that Liaquat Baloch and IJT`s central leadership should seek public apology.
The Shia students residing in PU hostels should be given protection while a grand operation be launched to drive out miscreants from PU hostels.
Meanwhile, the Islami Jamiat Tulaba, Punjab University, also staged a protest demonstration against the PU vice-chancellor for fanning sectarianism on the university campus that led to injuring of several innocent students.
The protesters led by IJT PU acting nazim Amir Yaqoob on university campus chanted slogans against the vice-chancellor and alleged that the VC was engaging students in a clash to get second tenure of the vice-chancellorship.

ccording to the ISO officials, The Jamiat terrorists on Wednesday night tore the posters of Youm-e- Hussain (as) at Punjab University. When, some seniors of ISO met Jama’at-e-Islami leadership including Liaquat Baloch to inform them about the attitude of Jamiat and request them to control them. But Jamaat-e-Islami activists replied; ‘we advise you to cancel this (Youm-e-Hussain) program’.
Today they (Jamiat) chanted slogans of “shia kafir”, brutally attacked the Shia students, and openly fired on them.
The most hypocrite role was played by the Director Students Affairs, Dr. Iftikhar belongs from Jamaat-e-Islami, who allowed the Islami Jamiat-e-Talba activists to enter in the University with heavy ammunition and attacked the organizers of Youm-e-Hussain (as).
It may be noted here that On 7th July 1994 also terrorists of Islami Jamiat-e-Talba had attacked Youm-e-Hussain (as) program held in Punjab University and insulted Imam Hussain (as) and chanted slogans in favor of yazeed with strong support from Sipah Sahaba. In the ensuing clash 4 jamatis were killed , some reports claim it was result of their own fire.

Sources in Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) said the sectarian clash had changed the scenario completely since the department wanted to appoint the senior-most professor after January 2, 2012. They said they were now reconsidering the appointment of a pro-JI acting VC till the appointment of a regular VC. On the other hand a sense of insecurity has erupted among the PU professors and students after the attack on Shia students by IJT and varsity’s faculty along with the Shia community is all set to launch a movement against Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif if a pro-Jamat-i-Islami faculty member is appointed the acting VC.
“Credentials of all 30 applicants are being considered thoroughly in the wake of the IJT attack,” sources said. Earlier this week, around 150 IJT activists carrying modern weapons including Kalashnikovs attacked around 30 shia students who had entered the varsity to celebrate Youm-e-Hussain. A number of shia students were injured and their parents were also tortured in the hospitals. According to a HED official, a detailed report of the incident was received by the HED in which varsity and agencies reviewed the matter. He said the names of Dr Saeed Akhtar, a professor in statistics and at the top on the seniority list and Professor Dr Khawaja Haris Rashid (Wahabi-Jamati) were being considered.
“According to our sources Dr Saeed Akhtar (Wahabi-Jamati) is a neutral man but he is not in a position to control the sectarian clashes and other issues while Dr Haris Rashid is himself a candidate for the seat so we are in search of a neutral man,” he said, adding that Dr Mujahid Kamran could also be asked to continue till the appointment of a regular VC and that the notification would be issued within this week after consultations with the CM. On the other hand the PU community is also expressing their concerns over the appointment of a pro-JI VC. “We are concerned about our security after the IJT attack. They were carrying weapons and our female staff members are especially concerned,” a professor said, asking not to be named, adding “most are considering leaving PU and joining a private university” and that the IJT activists had not even spared the professors and their families.

The real battle is for the PU VC seat

LAHORE – The sectarian clash between Imamia Students Organization (ISO) activists and Islami Jamiat Taliba (IJT) activists at the Punjab University (PU) campus on Thursday was a planed conspiracy of pro-Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) and pro-IJT teachers to grab the Punjab University Vice Chancellor (VC) slot to be vacant on January 2 2012, Pakistan Today learnt.
The clash has raised the alarm bells amongst quarters concerned, including the Punjab Chief Minister, on whether to appease the IJT and JI who hold the PU under their terror or opt for the benefit of PU’s 30,000 students when choosing the new vice chancellor.
Earlier on, in 2007, when the seat of VC was up for grabs, pro-JI faculty instigated sectarian clashes between ISO and IJT but failed to fulfill their aim. The same episode has been re-run 10-days before the tenure of the current PU VC is set to expire.
PU sources said pro-JI faculty wishes to put the cap on its hegemony at PU by securing the VC slot for National Textile University’s (NTU) VC Dr Niaz Ahmad. Sources said Dr Niaz was present at PU when the clash between ISO and IJT broke out.
While the clash at PU played out between Shia students and IJT activists on whether or not to hold a session in memory of Imam Hussain (ra), the true purpose of the clash was to hold the Punjab government and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif hostage over the appointment of the new PU VC.
The PU operates as the student headquarters of the JI, dominated by the IJT, despite the complete ban on student unions across the country. In addition to which, 70 percent of PU faculty and administrative officials are linked to the JI.
A repeat of 2007: Sources said the group that had instigated clashes in 2007 when former PU VC Lt Gen (r) Dr Arshad Mahmood completed his tenure, was behind today’s clash. Sources said the group had begun to raise the sectarian card, asking ‘how can Shia be allowed to pray at the PU mosques?’, in order to secure a VC’s slot for pro-JI Professor Dr Arif Butt but had failed when the VC’s search committee selected Professor Dr Mujahid Kamran as PU VC. Back in 2007, Shia students were forced to offer prayers on the roads and a cross-country protest campaign began which was settled by former Governor/Chancellor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool.
Fingers point to Liaqat Baloch: The sources said the pro-JI teachers were operating under the direction of JI Lahore Chief Liaquat Baloch, who had met the Punjab CM accompanied by favoured candidate Dr Niaz Ahmad. The ISO also accused Liaqat Baloch of being the ‘string-puller’ of the clash during a press conference at the Lahore Press Club on Thursday. However, when contacted by Pakistan Today, Liaqat Baloch’s personal assistant said Baloch was not involved and opposed sectarian clashes at PU.
A PU official said the ‘drama’ had been orchestrated by pro-JI faculty to secure the VC slot. He said it was unfortunate that the lives of students were being put at risk to maintain the rule of the JI through the IJT at PU. He said Dr Mujahid had controlled JI hooliganism but it had started again when his tenure was coming to a close.
IJT discrimination against Shias: A PU professor said JI professors had never allowed other religious groups to organise religious events, even though they celebrate celebrate Maulana Madudi days and organize political shows freely at the varsity. He said the tradition went back to 1994, when 4 PU students were killed Shia students opened fire when IJT activists tried to stop them from holding a majlis at PU. He said PU should allow full religious freedom to all. He said IJT activists had organised a talent show two days ago without the permission of the administration but were still not allowing Shia students to offer prayer at PU mosques.
Meanwhile, PU students, especially Shia students, condemned pro-JI faculty as responsible for the days’ violence. Shia student Fiza said over 30,000 students were being educated at PU’s 73 departments and the IJT wanted to impose their religious agenda on all of them. She said the freedom of religion was a right and had to be respected in varsities. She condemned the Punjab government and accused the Punjab CM of having a soft corner for the JI and the IJT to the detriment of PU’s 30,000 students.

SHIA STUDENTS VACATE HOSTELS: “Over 300 shia students have vacated the hostels because they fear being attacked by the IJT activists,” a shia student asking not be named said, adding “how will the administration provide security for us when their own security guards are being kidnapped.” “We will launch an anti-CM protest all over the country if a pro-IJT VC is appointed,” he said.

Do not appoint a pro-JI VC at PU, ISO students demand
Lahore – A large number of Punjab University Shia students under the banner of Imamia Students Organisation (ISO) protested against the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) on Friday. The protesters demanded Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif refrain from appointing a pro-Jamaat-e-Islami and pro-IJT vice chancellor in the PU, adding that it was a cause of security concern for hundreds of Shia students of the university.
The Shia students, condemning the IJT over the clash at PU that had left a number of Shia students injured, said that the attack on the Shia students over celebrating the ‘Youm-e-Hussain’ had proven that the university was in the hand of gangsters, while illegal IJT activists were present at the varsity.
The ISO students gathered in front of the Lahore Press Club and chanted slogans against the IJT activists who had attacked the Shia students a couple of days ago and stopped them from celebrating ‘Youm-e-Hussain’. The students held banners, demanding justice from the Punjab CM and security for the students. They also demanded legal action against the IJT activists who had attacked and used weapons against them.
The protesters said the torture of Shia students had opened the eyes of the Punjab CM and he should not appoint a pro-JI and pro-IJT VC as it would close the door of education for Shia students at the varsity. They alleged IJT activists had tortured parents of Shia students, who were hospitalised during the stone-throwing by IJT activists. The students said, on the one hand, the CM was distributing laptops amongst PU students to promote education, on the other hand, the JI was giving weapons to IJT activists to kill students. Meanwhile, the IJT activists also protested against the PU administration over the clash and alleged the administration had backed the incident and was promoting sectarianism.

This article clearly shows that criticalppp is more of sectarian shia propaganda website than secular non sectarian ppp website.i knw shai hv leaning towards ppp.Ever since this incident i havent seen any sectarian post from Islami jamiat Talaba on the internet or anywhere.where as ISO and its supporters like criticalppp has used hateful sectarian terms like yazidiat against IJt knowing the fact that Jamiat has all Sunnis barelvi, deobani, ahle hadees.i dont want to go into who is yazeeds childern and who is not.Overwelming majourity of Pakistan Muslim are Sunni and 90% around the world are in 53 out of 57 countries Sunnis are majourity.i consider shias to be my Muslim brothers. But this sectarian prejudice and jealousy towards IJT is not going to help anyone but certainly not ISO wch is sectarian organization of a shia sect.IJT is not any ordinary organization it is has given 1000s of Ghaizs and Shaheeds to Pakistan from east Pakistan to occupied Kashmir.IJT is the biggest and most Successful nationwide organization of Pakistan. It could not have been the biggest and most succeful if it was ethnic like APMSO PSF or Sectarian like ATI or ISO IJT is non sectarian it has alawys worked for unity Muslims.and this propaganda is only going harm IJT’s enemies.IJT is will get stronger than ever before it proved that with great convention in Punjab university in oct 2011.
Long live Islami Jamiat Talaba Pakistan. IJT is not a sectarian organization. LUBP has always criticised and cursed IJT whether it was responsible for any incident or not. LUBP should play its role as neutral rather than on partial basis.
